Newsletter May – June Issue No. 11 SoCal Eights Attended Bimmerfest May 2013 & The Dana Point Concours D’Elegance This June Event News Fern Mora In Marina Del Rey, CA Greetings from SoCal: We have had 4 amazing events these last 6 months. Starting with our Wrenchfest in February with 23 attendees, Nethercutt Museum in April with 25 attendees, Bimmerfest 2012 where 25 rolled in together, an impromptu Cars & Coffee meet in Irvine, and we just attended the Dana Point Concours D’ Elegance this June where we had a good showing of 9 Eights……and we’re not done yet! Coming in July, we’re going on a personal tour just for us of the 46,000 Sq Ft. Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills followed by a luncheon. Also planned is our 2nd & 3rd Wrenchfest this August and September just in time to prepare our cars for our 1,400 mile round trip to 8-Fest in October. There is no grass growing under our tires. Bimmefest: It was an outstanding success. We had a great up front first row reserved parking area which I was able to arrange so that we could get full exposure without being hidden by the masses. We received a very warm welcome form the organizers and attendees and we were bombarded by the usual questions and comments….. “No it’s not a new BMW model”. Those who know about the 8 and have seen one before were amazed to see (like most have said), that there were so many in one place at one time. I am sure we have all heard these words before, but it is always pleasant to hear it. We had five CSi’s with us and Tom Patton was in the Bimmer Coral competing with his ’94 CSi . Tom won first place for Best Stock BMW. The last two years, Gary Corcoran won with his ‘94 CSi as Best Stock BMW. Dana Point 31st Concours D’ Elegance: What a prestigious event this was. It was billed as the Pebble Beach Concours of Southern California. Some of the most amazing original and restored cars in the country were exhibited, and SoCal Eights were among them. We did not compete for awards, but were on display in the Super Cars Section. Ralph Rodheim who once worked as a volunteer at the Newport Concours D’ Elegance before the venue was moved to Dana Point, was instrumental in getting our group accepted as participants. It was the first time that any BMW group had been accepted to join this wonderful event. SoCal Eights had a meet and greet area in Pasadena near the Rose Bowl to set up before rolling into Bimmerfest. It was a great time to see some newbie 8s, talk to members, and have a cup of coffee before caravanning in to the big show. We had 25 cars in attendance and two more joined us inside the venue. Great participation by our members. Twenty Five Eights Rolling Out It’s always a beautiful sight seeing this many Eights rolling together at one time. We had reserved parking spaces set up for us in the front row. There were a lot of jaws dropping as we came into the field. Many gave us a thumbs up and were taking pictures as we lined up inside. Some just said WOW! We’re Rolling In Twenty 8s Rolling In On our way to the Rose Bowl and onto the field Front & Center We had a great spot at the show spanning the entire right side with no other BMW’s in front of us. We asked for a good spot and they delivered. There was a constant parade of attendees walking around our Eights taking pictures. We also had five CSi’s among us. There were two other Eights there that were not with our group. It’s a group of people from around the world who share the same passions – history, automobiles and racing. And they know there is only one place during the summer where they can find it all -- at the Dana Point Concours D’Elegance. For years, it has been the epicenter of the collector car celebration in Southern California. As part of the celebration, the Dana Point Concours D’Elegance honored the 100th anniversary of the Duesenberg as the featured automobile marquee during Sunday’s event, and Harley Davidson was honored for its 110th anniversary as the featured motorcycle marquee. Other special car classes included: 100th Anniversary of Aston Martin 50th Anniversary of Porsche 911 25th Anniversary of the BMW M3 in the U.S., and Factory Concept Show Cars 9 ATTENDED Tà à{x VÉÇvÉâÜá For years, the Concours D’ Elegance in Orange County has been hosting the collector car celebration in Southern California. Now for its 31st year, the team has expanded the Concours D’Elegance into a three-day event – The Orange County Collector Car & Motorcycle Weekend. On Sunday, June 23rd, the Concours returned to the luscious green golf links of the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort, where it hosts thousands of collector car owners, enthusiasts and families. SoCal Eights were among the participants to this prestigious event. In attendance, were nine great looking Eights. “Southern California is one of the most automotive-centric places in the world, which has propelled the Dana Point Concours evolution into a multiday celebration of the hobby,” Lined up in order by model and color were the magnificent nine Taylor Patterson ’95 850CSi Black Fern Mora '95 840Ci Blue Brian Retke ’94 850CSi Green Ronald Harris '95 840Ci Black Gary Corcoran ’94 850CSi Black John Burgan '94 840Ci Blue Jann Wimmer ’91 850i Calypso Tom Jacobsmeyer '97 840Ci Black Ralph Rodheim ’91 850Ci Black Meet & Greet Nine out of 10 who registered for this event met at the Dana Point High School parking lot at 7:00AM. It’s always good to spend some time together, and we took full advantage of it while we patiently waited for the last member to show up. After a half-hour wait, we decided to leave the parking lot and roll into the venue. We thought that our last member may have already entered the field. We found out later that he was not able to make the event. Weekend mornings are a great time to spend with good friends and yes, talk about 8s. They revel in the little things, like the adrenaline rush of taking a sharp turn, the wind sweeping through their hair, and the feel of wrapping their fingers around the handle bar grips. Those are the sensations that motorcycle enthusiasts live for when they get on a Ducati, Harley Davidson, Ariel, Honda or any twowheeler machine. It’s a freedom that no convertible or V8 muscle car can provide. It’s the pure enjoyment of letting the little rebellious voice inside lead you down the highway or the road less traveled. The Deathmobile from the cult classic movie National Lampoon’s Animal House featuring John Belushi was there. Animal House is one of the most famous movies ever made. The edited version is still played regularly on TV. The Deathmobile is by far one of the most recognizable movie cars. At the show people flocked to the car. Here is a picture of one of our members, Gary Corcoran (’94 CSi). Anyone who is over 30 remembers this car and still gets a kick out of seeing this wild creation. And special thanks to Ralph and especially Fern for organizing our inclusion in the Supercar category where we shared that spotlight with Ford GT 40s, Audi R8s, Ferraris, a super Vette, and other fast and bitchen Supercars. I didn't capture a lot of pictures, but I'm sure the others will want to post theirs soon. I loved that even though the stewards were unclear about telling us how they wanted us to line up, Fern came prepared with two options for them, color coded to our cars. Fantastic planning Fern! Taylor Patterson, Cardiff, CA I had a great time! These events are so much more enjoyable when they are organized, and you and Ralph do a great job organizing all of us. Tom, thanks for the pictures. I enjoy making the trip(s) to SoCal and I get to see my cousins. Much better weather, good group of guys, and I get to put over 500 miles on my 8 on the open road. It doesn't get much better than that. Brian Retke, Las Vegas, NV Fern you are the best. Thank you for the nice comments and yes, it was a “FUN” day which happens to be my new criteria for doing anything. See you soon, Ralph Rodheim, Balboa Island, CA Hey Fern, Thanks, I had a great time! Was good to see everybody. Jann Wimmer, Van Nuys, CA Fern: I had a great time!
