AMERICAN ADVERTISING AWARDS AAF DISTRICT 2
The American Advertising Awards is the advertising industry’s largest and most
representative competition, attracting over 50,000 entries every year in local
competitions. The mission of the competition is to recognize and reward creative
excellence in the art of advertising.
Conducted annually by the American Advertising Federation (AAF), the local
Awards is the first of a three-tier, national competition. Concurrently, all across
the country, local entrants vie for recognition as the very best in their markets.
At the second tier, local winners compete against other winners in one of
14 District competitions. District winners are then forwarded to the third
tier, the national Awards competition.
Entering the competition supports our entire industry, because the AAF and
its local and district affiliates use the proceeds to enhance advertising through
programs such as public service, internships, advocacy groups, advertising
education, and consumer awareness. Selection of the most creative entry in each
category is effected by a scoring process in which a panel of judges evaluate all
creative dimensions of every entry. In each category, a GOLD ADDY is recognition
of the highest level of creative excellence and is judged to be superior to all
other entries in the competition. Entries that are also considered outstanding
and worthy of recognition receive a SILVER ADDY. The number of awards given
in each category is determined by the judges, based on the relative quality
of work in that category.

Dear District Two American Advertising Work Participants,
Thank you and congratulations to all the clubs who participated in this year’s
American Advertising Awards competition! It was a great year with 12 of 13
clubs who participated and included 163 participating companies totaling over
480 entries competing at the District Two (regional) level. And please keep
in mind that these entries we’re all winners at their local level.
Winning at the District Two level is another testament to the prestige of the
competition. The District Two competition is one of the toughest regions to
compete in- if you survive, win and advance at this level to Nationals, you’ve
really done yourself, your agency, and your local club proud. The 12 clubs that
participated in this year’s American Advertising Awards represented New York,
Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia.
Thanks to the club presidents, American Advertising Awards chairs and
executive directors who made this three-tiered competition a smooth one.
Thanks also to District Two American Advertising Awards committee and
judges that labored long and hard to conduct our judging in just one day.
And finally, thanks to BBDO New York for hosting this year’s judging event.
Again, thank you for your hard work and participation, congratulations to all
those that won at the local level, and of course best of luck to those that went
on to compete at the national level.

Global instability spurred by
climate change and a clipping
dependence on oil.
America’s economic dependence on foreign oil isn’t exactly
news. Nor is the idea that such dependence undermines
our international security. President Dwight D. Eisenhower
worried in the 1950s that if the nation imported more than
20 percent of its oil, it would face an untenable risk. Five
decades and three oil price-induced shocking recessions
later, with oil imports now at more than 60 percent, the
risk is greater than ever. But it’s being viewed with a new
level of urgency at the Pentagon—not because military
planners are worried about the price of oil (in planning
and acquisition, the US Defense Department treats oil as
if it were a free commodity), nor because of any highminded concerns about the environmental consequences
of fossil-fuel consumption.
