Each class explores a different movement sequence. You are guided to discover your habits, good and bad. By learning what you do as you move, you can improve your ability and comfort. Students taking classes report better posture, balance and stability, fuller breathing, muscle relaxation and increased joint flexibility. The Feldenkrais method enables effortless, comfortable movement for all the functions of everyday life. It is a practical way to maintain or regain the pleasure of work out routines, office and household tasks or sports activities. It is a non-invasive, step-by-step class that can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities. Instructor Lisa Woolnough studied to become a Feldenkrais Practitioner in Montreal. She completed the four-year professional training progrm in 1996 and has been practicing full time since then. A practitioner must complete Advanced Training every two years to maintain certification as a member of the North American Feldenkrais Guild. Lisa discovered the Feldenkrais Method while searching for a way to ease the chronic pain suffered by her mother after a back injury. Subsequently, Lisa became vision impaired and the kinaesthetic awareness gained from her Feldenkrais work has enabled her to keep on skiing, kayaking and dog walking. We will build on strength and endurance. Tues., April 7 - June 2, 5:30-6:40 p.m. YIN YOGA Yin Yoga contains the ancient, and some say original, form of asana practice. It targets the connective tissues, such as the ligaments, bones, and even the joints of the body that normally are not exercised very much in a more active style of asana practice. Yin Yoga generally focuses on the connective tissues of the hips, pelvis, and lower spine. Postures are held for longer periods of time and are often supported with props to allow a deeper release. It is because of these long holds that the deeper structures of the body are opened, stretched and awakened. New depths in postures, deeper ranges of motion, or an increased flow of energy may only be achievable by focusing on the deeper tissues of the body. This is why so many students are finding Yin Yoga to be the perfect complement and balance to their more active, yang practices and to their busy lives. This class is suitable for all levels. Thurs., April 2 - May 28, 6:50-8 p.m. CHAIR YOGA Chair Yoga is gentle, slow-paced, and suitable for most adults with mobility or balance issues. Participants will learn simple, Hatha-based poses and breathing exercises that can be done seated in or assisted by a chair. Chair Yoga is designed to help improve circulation, increase flexibility, and promote relaxation. Instructor Amanda Anaka is a CanFit Pro Fitness Instructor Specialist, as well as a yoga instructor. Her classes consist of Hathabased sequences modified with the use of a chair with a focus on breathing with the movements. She loves to be able to bring the practise of yoga to students of all ages and experience levels. Bridgewater | www.bridgewater.ca | 543-2274 SPRAYING FRUIT TREES LEARN TO GRAFT YOUR OWN FRUIT TREES Most fruits do not “come true to seed.” That is a seed from a MacIntosh apple will not grow into a tree which produces MacIntosh apples; one must graft a shoot from a MacIntosh tree onto a suitable root to get such a tree. This hands-on workshop will cover two distinct situations: 1) how to graft a new tree, using a size-controlling rootstock. Participants will be able to take home their own apple trees, grafted to their choice of variety, for planting. 2) how to “topwork” an existing tree, such as an abandoned apple tree on their own property, that is grafting one - or many - new varieties onto a mature tree, making a tree which bears the new variety or varieties. Dr. David Maxwell is passionate about the importance of preserving the old varieties of apples, many of which are no longer available commercially, and the varieties he will supply for the workshop are drawn from his own collection of antique varieties. However, participants are also encouraged to bring their own scion wood from any apple trees which they may wish to preserve and reproduce. (In this instance, they should contact Dr. Maxwell, 902-766-0305, during the winter to obtain guidance on how and when to cut their grafting wood.) The workshop fee includes the cost of all necessary materials (rootstocks, scions, tools and grafting materials) which will be supplied. Participants should also take note of the workshops being offered by Elspeth MacLean-Wile, in which they will learn how to plant and care for their newly grafted baby. Please bring a sturdy utility knife (type used for cutting wallboard) and lunch. We encourage folks to support the care, maintenance and harvest of these edible fruit and nut trees in 4 of our town parks and in Brookside Cemetery. Look for more trees cropping up this spring. Our latest project is The Bee’s Needs Pollinator Garden located at the bottom of the hill in Aberdeen Green Park. Food production is being threatened by the destruction of bees and other creatures that pollinate plants. This garden is our effort to educate the public on the need to reverse the effects of pesticides, invasive species and habitat destruction. All of these initiatives are supported by the Town of Bridgewater and are the result of benefactors (Tree Canada, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, Helping Nature Heal and other local businesses as well as The United Way) partnering with volunteers to make our community more vibrant, inclusive and edible. BECOME A MEMBER We are seeking new members for various committees and core team activities.
