Optional Piping 10) Wrong sides toge t h e r, fold the 114⁄ " Gold strip in half lengthC C wise with the cording inside. Using the zipper foot of your Fig. 7 machine, keep pushing the cording into the fold of the fabric and stitch through both fabric layers along the edge of the cording. 11) Starting in the middle of one side of the quilt, pin the piping to the edge of the quilt. The raw-edged lip of the piping should line up with the outer edges of the quilt and the seamline of the piping should be 1/4" inside the outer edge of the quilt. When you get to a corner, clip the seam allowance just up to the piping seam and turn the corner. Continue pinning the piping completely around the quilt. Overlap the piping ends and mark where the ends meet.Trim off the excess piping, leaving about 1/2" extra on each end. Pull back the fabric to expose the inner cording and trim the cording so that the ends meet. Pull the fabric back to cover the cording and fold it under the piping. Baste the piping in place. Borders 12) Center one 63⁄8" x 72" Outer Border on one side of the quilt top. (Refer to detail of stripe at right for centering instructions.) Stitch the border to the quilt top s t a rting and stopping the stitching 1/4" from both ends. Press this seam toward the center of the quilt. Do not trim the extra fabric from the ends of the border strip. (Note: If you are using the optional piping, use your zipper foot to attach the border strips. This will allow you to sew directly over the piping seamline, 1/4" from the edge of the quilt.) 13) Repeat Step 12 with the remaining three Outer Borders,m a king sure to stop and start 1/4" away from each end of the quilt top. 14) To miter the borders, fold one corner of the quilt right sides together on a 45º angle so that the border strips are directly on top of one another and the seams nest together. Place your rotary ruler on the fold of the quilt so that the long edge is against the fold and the 45º line is on the side seam. Draw a line from the corner of the quilt top to the outside edge of the border. (fig. 9, on back page) Pin the borders together. 15) Position your needle on the inside corner where the border meets the quilt. Stitch directly on the line you have drawn to the outside edge of the border. Aligning the Borders Find the center of one side of the quilt. Lay a border strip on the side of the quilt and slide the strip up or down as needed to align the center motif marked with a dotted line, above, with the center of the quilt. 16) Trim the excess fabric leaving a 1/4" seam allowance. Press. Repeat the process for the remaining three corners of the quilt. 17) Layer, quilt and bind as desired. ©2005 Timeless Treasures Fig. 8 a) Place the 45° line of your ruler on the side seam. b) Draw a line from here to here. c) Pin the borders together and stitch on the drawn line indicated by the red dotted line.
