Producers of Tecumseh! 2015 Annual Report PRODUCED BY THE SCIOTO SOCIETY, INC MISSION: The Scioto Society, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation formed to advance, encourage and promote the recreational, industrial, economic, commercial and civic development of Ross County and the territory surrounding Chillicothe in whatever way and by such means as will improve the normal growth, employment opportunities, stability of employment in existing industry, advance of the industrial economy of the area primarily through the presentation of the outdoor historical drama TECUMSEH!. While the previous season marked a crucial turning point in the history of the organization, this season saw the beginning of implementation of a major IT upgrade, diversifying offerings on the stage and many partnerships with other local organizations. Months of work and preparation go into making each and every season a reality. This year’s performance would not have happened if not for the generous contributions of our sponsors, the enthusiasm and support of the Chillicothe community and many other communities from across the region, and the tireless efforts of our office staff and Board of Trustees. Our cast and crew were unparalleled in both talent and professionalism, and, as always, our patrons gave us tremendous support in coming out to enjoy our show. With such passion and determination supporting us, the outdoor drama Tecumseh! will remain an integral part of the Ohio historical experience and will continue set the highest standards in outdoor entertainment. We at the Scioto Society, Inc. want to extend a heartfelt Thank You to everyone for giving us the opportunity and privilege to perform for a 43rd season, and we look forward to everything that 2016 has to offer! November, 2014 • • • • New CEO, Brandon Smith, presents plans for new concert series & Shakespeare on Sugarloaf Dr. Randall VanVoorhis is voted in as new President of The Scioto Society, Inc. The Board of Trustees welcomes both new and returning members The Sponsorship Program for 2015 kicks off December, 2014 • • A new tradition begins as the office staff makes and delivers cookies to sponsors & supporters Gift Certificate promotion sells thousands of dollars, giving ticket sales a good bump in a normally quiet month. January, 2015 • • • • • • Ceade Mile Failte, a new fundraising event, is announced to take place in March Contracts for the 2015 Live On The Mountain Concert Series are signed CEO Brandon Smith attends Institute of Outdoor Theatre conference & auditions, presents workshop on group sales & marketing strategies. Radio trades begin with networks from across the state of Ohio through a new partnership with the Ohio News Network. A new partnership with Ohio University-Chillicothe and the Ross-Chillicothe Public Library is established for the purposes of promoting Shakespeare On Sugarloaf. OFCC grant is finalized for new rainshelter roof. February, 2015 • • • • • • Director Jenny Male attends UPTA auditions. Huntington Bank sign on as a new presenting sponsor Mailing campaign begins with AAA Travel Centers and Convention & Visitors Bureaus around the region. Local brochure distribution begins. School Night invitations for the 2015 season go out to 542 schools around the region. Contract is signed with ETIX ticketing systems to go to a fully computerized system for the box office. Training begins for administrative staff. March, 2015 • • • • • • Ceade Mile Failte is a sell out in its first year, raising nearly $20,000 for the organization. Director Jenny Male attends the SETC auditions. Director Jenny Male and PSM Alex Freeman hold auditions in Chicago to find a Tecumseh. They succeed, and Cliff Nunley becomes the latest actor to tackle the role. Job postings for the 2015 House Staff go online, and interviews begin. Cast and company information are compiled for the new souvenir program, developed in partnership with Graphix Design. The Scioto Society board names Marion N. Waggoner as the recipient of the prestigious Silver Arrow Award. April 2015 • • • • • After a very long and cold off-season, the Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheatre is de-winterized. Preseason maintenance staff begins work on cabins, grounds and barn areas. Remodel of the box office area begins. Work begins on new sidewalks Tecumseh takes part in annual home and garden show at Ross County Fairgrounds. May 2015 • • • • • • Production crew arrives and begins work during the first week of May. Horizon installs new phone system for box office and theatre office. The annual Company Meeting is held at the Christopher Conference Center. Rehearsals begin on the Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheatre. 10 trees are removed around the water tower area, removing threat of a downed tree falling into the tower. Work begins and is completed on new rainshelter roof by AKM Construction. June 2015 • • • • • The 2015 season of Tecumseh! opens on Friday, June 5, with preshow reception for sponsors & supporters. Opening weekend party on Saturday generously catered by Paul and Bev Adkins. Volunteer ushers and hospitality staff begin working on the mountain. American music legend, Ralph Stanley, appears in the inaugural Live On The Mountain concert with over 1500 in attendance. Sack It With Shakespeare, a free public discussion on As You Like It is held at the Ross County Public Library North Branch with OU-C. July 2015 • Shakespeare on Sugarloaf production of As You Like It, directed by AS Freeman, reserves out. The production is seen by 1000 people and lays the groundwork for the program moving forward. August 2015 • • • • • End of season auditions are held at the Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheatre. The second concert, Dailey & Vincent, closes the summer concert series. A special performance of Shadows of Destiny, by Marion N. Waggoner, is performed. The annual company picnic is held at the CEO house. The 2014 season of Tecumseh! ends on Saturday, August 29, with a small uptick in attendance. September 2015 • • • • • • Construction on Haunted Mountain begins. Gift Shop ends up for a second year in a row. Program sales hit a high water mark for the 2000’s. The office staff compiles and inventories information from the 2015 season and begins planning for next year. Marketing for WOODY, a production in partnership with the Majestic Theatre, begins CEO Brandon Smith is invited to the Ohio Statehouse to accept an honor from Heritage Ohio, on behalf of the organization as an Appalachian Success Story. October 2015 • • • • Haunted Mountain opens and runs each weekend throughout the month. Thousands attend. New roofs are constructed on both the main office and CEO house buildings. Chimney at CEO house building is re-constructed with volunteer labor. 2016 season brochures arrive in the office in time for the AAA travel show.
