We asked alumni to share with us some interesting points of their life for the newsletter, through the GSAB Alumni pages on Facebook. There was a great response! Here are some of the responses. Jessy Klimpel (‘09 Saxophone) is currently teaching and living in Garrison, ND, starting his 3rd year of teaching. He is active in the Minot area playing with the Gentile Winds Orchestra and the Swing Band of Minot Timothy L. Dura (‘74 Trombone) lives in Redondo Beach, California and VSHQW\HDUVDVDÀJKWHUSLORWZLWKWKH U.S. Air Force. He is currently teaching Math, Driver’s Education, and Economics at Hawthorne Math and Science Academy, Hawthorne CA. Steve Anderson (‘70 Tuba) lives in Brainerd, MN, and teaches at Central Lakes College. This year he is taking 55 members of his community band on a 11 day European tour Prague, Vienna, and Budapest. Matt Larson (‘05 Tuba) and Joan Backman (‘04 Clarinet and String Bass) live in Minneapolis, MN. Joan currently has completed a PhD in Cancer Biology from the University of Minnesota. She will complete her medical school education in May 2012. She currently plays String Bass in the community orchestra at the university. Matt currently teaches Spanish, American History and AP European History at DeLaSalle High School in Minneapolis. He plays in the the orchestra along with Joan at the university and also occasionally plays with and/or directs the pep band at DeLaSalle High School. Jennifer Andreachi (‘96 Percussion and Piano) is married to GSAB Past President Chris Andreachi (‘95 Bassoon and Tuba) for 14 years. They have four children, Meghan, 12 (plays the 2ERHDQGMXVWDWWHQGHGKHUÀUVW\HDUDW the International Music Camp), Katie, 11 (plays Cello), Ryan, 6, and Aaron, 4. Jennifer currently is a stay at home mom and works part time at the Fargo Country Club. She is currently the VicePresident for CreateND which sponsors continued on page 3... 2 From GSMB director Dr. Sigurd Johnson... The Gold Star Marching Band is gearing up for another exciting season. We hope to KDYHDJRRGORRNLQJDQGJRRGVRXQGLQJEDQGRXUWKHUHRQWKHIRRWEDOOÀHOGDJDLQWKLV year. Now that the team is doing their part again - we not only look forward to playing for the games - but actually enjoying them!! We plan to head down to Minneapolis for the game between the Bison and Gophers, and hopefully play for a local high school the evening before the game as well. We have some great show ideas in the works - a Lady Gaga show, a patriotic show (in honor of the 10th anniversary of 9/11), a classic rock show (for homecoming) and a cartoon theme show (for the student written show). We hope to see as many alumni as possible back for the homecoming show and GD\LWZRXOGEHJUHDWWRKDYHDODUJHJURXSRXWWKHUHRQWKHÀHOGZLWKXVDWKDOIWLPH and during pregame!! Please continue to support the band in any way you can. She is the also the local coordinator these progrrams. This year, four of the local teams that Jennifer and Chris managed attended Global Finals in Knoxville, TN. Stacy Juntunen (’92), is currently the band director and lives in East Grand Forks, MN. She was married on August 12, and will be the step mom of three young girls. Jenny (Thompson) Poehls (‘06 Flute) attended Northern Iowa and received a Masters of Music degree in 2008. She was recently appointed Lecturer of Flute at both North Dakota and South Dakota State Universities. She also teaches private Piano in the Fargo area as well as teaching with the Childrens Music Academy, Fargo. She currently resides in Fargo with her husband Derek, who is currently a Network Engineer with 702 communications, Moorhead (Derek is a 2008 NDSU music alum). Sara (Runia) Larson (‘08 Saxophone) was married in 2010, and currently lives in Yuma, AZ working at Sternco Engineers along with her husband, Matt. She plays in the Arizona Western College Community Band and occasionally teaches lessons to saxophone players at the local high school. They enjoy the sunny weather in Arizona and spent a lot of time outdoors. GSAB President Theresa (Smith) Ulrich (‘84 Flute) and her husband Tim (82’, 84) live in Horace, ND, with their son Daniel (3), and their new daughter Sarah, Anna, born November 23, 2010. She works as Minister of Music at Lutheran Church of the Cross in West Fargo, ND. This year’‛s GSAB Homecoming Director is Brian Selander *6%·)! He will lead our rehearsal and coordinate with the GSMB directors to practice our pregame and halftime numbers together. Come on over, socialize and enjoy the rehearsals! 10:00 a.m. Homecoming Parade GSAB trailer band and our 2011 Honored Alum 'RXJ%DNNXP*6%· will be part of the parade. We will have a truck and (hopefully larger) trailer on which GSAB members will ride and play. Parade begins on North University Drive and ends on 12th Avenue North. 11:00 a.m. Bison Pep Rally and Lunch: Bison Sports Arena GSAB & GSMB play at Pep Rally, lunch is available. GSAB and the Gold Star Marching Band will both be playing and we’‛ll also do some playing together. GSAB will play at about 11:20 a.m. If you wish, you can have lunch there;; tickets are available at the door. After the pep rally, those who are playing in the pregame will march/walk over to the FargoDome with the GSMB. Alumni who are not playing can head over to the FargoDome to our seating block. 1:00 p.m. Homecoming Game: NDSU vs. Illinois State Play “Yellow & Green” with GSMB in pregame;; play “Mr. Roboto” with GSMB at halftime. We will be joining the GSMB for these two numbers before and during the game. Otherwise, we will be not be playing during the game;; we can store instruments in the GSMB instrument storage area at the Dome when we’‛re not playing. Our GSAB seating block is in Section 6 (east side), Rows N-T this year.
