AutoIntelligence | Issue 19 | Winter 2014 5 New Bosch Aerotwin Plus – the most advanced wiper blade from Bosch Introducing the smart new range of Bosch wiper blades to build on the award-winning Aerotwin flat blade design, but now with a sophisticated new formulation of rubber. Featuring Bosch’s Power Protection Plus (P.P.P), a unique wiper rubber with a patented coating, the blades have been optimised to provide high performance and a long service life allowing them to be both reliable and economical in the long run. Motorists will notice the superior performance, no matter how extreme the driving conditions. The new adapter system of Aerotwin Plus ensures the highest numbers of vehicles are supported by each wiper blade. Just 15 part numbers cover 93% of all cars fitted with OE flat wiper blades, with each wiper blade compatible to 10 different types of wiper arms. The simplicity of the adapter mechanism means they can be installed by both motorists and technicians. The flat-blade technology in Aerotwin Plus wipers provides more down force than a conventional design, eliminating gaps in which water or snow can collect. Designed without the traditional metal frame, flat-blade wiper technology ensures that the pressure of the blade is evenly distributed over any shape of windscreen. The aerodynamic design reduces the chance of air passing under the blade at motorway speeds – when it is most crucial that wipers perform – making them more efficient and less noisy than conventional blades, while providing a longer service life than conventional wiper blades. New Bosch bulb range The new Bosch bulb range satisfies the highest standards and offers the right product for every application. With outstanding light output and whiteness, the automotive bulbs range ensures superior illumination of the road. In line with increased quality, the range now demonstrates better branding with each bulb stamped with the Bosch logo. Bosch realise this and have enhanced the tyre service equipment range accordingly to now provide workshops with the latest generation of fast, effective and profitable tyre changers. Both machines come with a 4 year standard warranty*. The new TCE 4430 and TCE 4435 cover 95 per cent of all passenger cars, light commercial vehicles and motorcycles, allowing workshops to become a one-stop-shop for their customers, potentially increasing revenue and profitability. which is equipped with a quick exhaust valve for faster bead breaking times. This increases the cylinder speed by up to 40 per cent, as well minimising the risk of placing excessive pressure on the tyre. Bosch’s G-Frame concept technology is at the heart of its new pneumatic tilting-back tyre changers. This unique and advanced feature increases the rigidity of the machine, reducing the flow of internal forces, avoiding tyre and rim damage, while also improving the time it takes to change the tyre. This makes the new machines ideal for high-volume, specialist or dedicated tyre workshops. The new range of tyre changers has been specifically designed with efficiency in-mind. The shorter stroke of the cylinder reduces the need for air, lowering the compressor’s energy consumption, providing a long-term saving for the workshop. The most stressed part in a tyre changer is the back pole, so Bosch has specifically developed a rugged tilting-back pole and a cushioned cylinder, increasing the ease of use to the operator during mounting and demounting. The new machines also feature a 4-point adjustable bead breaker. This is designed to protect the rim from scratching by avoiding any risk of contact with the metal housing, *A 4 year warranty is available for TCE 4430 & TCE 4435 via participating distributors. AutoIntelligence | Issue 19 | Winter 2014 7 25 years of Innovation The launch of the KTS 300, in the 1980s, marked the start of a new era in the servicing and repair of vehicles. This was the first tool that could be used to diagnose more than one make of car, instantly establishing Bosch as a leader in diagnostic equipment for the Automotive Aftermarket and it has been at the forefront of development within the industry ever since. Since its launch, 25 years ago, more than 175,000 KTS-series diagnostic testers worldwide have been manufactured with around 60,000 workshops throughout Europe using ESI[tronic]. The original KTS unit, known as the ‘Bosch hammer’ (thanks to its distinctive shape), was the first unit to communicate with multiple makes of vehicle. Today, Bosch embraces the All Make concept, as ESI[tronic] 2.0 software can be used in conjunction with more than 180 vehicle brands and over 90,000 models from around the world. Bosch’s advances have led the industry as mechanics have become technicians and have embraced electronic diagnostic tools. Designed as a comprehensive knowledge platform for technicians, ESI[tronic] provides detailed information and support that reflects the evolution, as electronics have played an increasing role in the development of vehicles. Bill Johnson, Ian Crowley, Replacing Dominic Moran, Bill Johnson has been appointed as Sales Director for automotive parts in the UK and Ireland. All product lines will now be blue however; there will be additional colours alongside for special requirements where applicable. This could include, grey for older Bosch celebrates centenary of starter motors vehicle technologies or black for performance/ upgrade models. New Start & Stop starter motor packaging There is also a different style between retail and workshop packaging. This new packaging creates consistency so that retail outlets and workshops can easily identify the innovative and reliable Bosch brand. New workshop packaging Starting a car using a crank-handle was a dangerous and strenuous task. It wasn’t uncommon for motorists to come to serious harm when, instead of turning over, the engine would kick back potentially breaking the driver’s wrist. AutoIntelligence | Issue 19 | Winter 2014 9 Streamlined battery range To make it easier to select the right battery every time, Bosch has streamlined its award-winning battery range including a new label design, to make battery identification straightforward and efficient. In addition, the introduction of pictograms will enable a workshop or end user to easily identify what type of Bosch automotive battery they require. The comprehensive range of batteries covers a wide variety of car, truck, motorcycle and leisure applications, and is constantly evolving to accommodate developing vehicle technologies, such as Start/Stop systems. S3: Grey labels S4: Blue labels S5: Black labels These are suitable for older vehicles with smaller engines. The S3 range has standard Flooded Lead Acid technology and is not suitable for vehicles with Start/Stop systems. This makes them cost effective for older vehicles (pre-2000). Any vehicle manufactured from 2000 onwards with a standard amount of electrical consumers (air conditioning, immobilisers, cruise control) requires at least an S4 battery. Some S4 part numbers have an Enhance Flooded Battery (EFB) design and are capable of dealing with some Start/ Stop systems. EFB technology is becoming increasingly utilised by OEM’s, thanks in part to the rise in popularity of Superminis. For premium vehicles and those with a large diesel engine, Bosch recommends an S5 battery as it is capable of dealing with lots of electrical consumers e.g. parking sensors, satellite navigation and infotainment systems. In addition some S5 part numbers have an Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) design, the latest cutting edge technology, capable of dealing with advanced Start/ Stop systems. The important thing to remember when fitting a new battery is to ensure the same type of battery technology is being replaced. You can always upgrade, but never downgrade. The introduction of the starter motor, therefore, came as a relief for motorists of the day marking a giant leap forward in automotive electrification, making driving safer and more comfortable. A century ago, in 1914, Bosch presented its first electric starter motor for cars that used electrical power from the vehicle’s battery supply. This was part of Bosch’s automotive lighting system it launched a year earlier, and was initially operated by a foot pedal before swiftly moving to a button. While the earliest starter motors weighed almost 10 kilograms and delivered just 0.6 kilowatts of power, the average starter motor in today’s vehicle weighs as little as 2 kilograms while delivering substantially more power, demonstrating just how far starter motor technology has advanced over the last 100 years. Today, Bosch offers a broad spectrum of robust, reliable starter motors for gasoline and diesel engines for passenger cars and commercial vehicles, supporting both 12 and 24 volt vehicle electrical systems. To keep up with constantly developing vehicle design and technology Bosch starter motors are now lightweight, compact and powerful, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Manufacturing over twelve million starter motors every year at least one in every five newlymanufactured vehicle worldwide uses a Bosch starter motor. 01895 838193 | [email protected] | www.boschautoparts.co.uk AutoIntelligence | Issue 19 | Winter 2014 10 The Bosch KTS family is celebrating 25 years of helping technicians quickly diagnose and fix vehicle faults. It’s vital that you get the best from your diagnostic equipment, and these tricks and tips will help you improve efficiency and help customers. Automatic VIN Look up A lot of people don’t know it’s there, or how it works, but this little feature saves time and eliminates human error when you need to find the unique 17 digit number. With the car connected to the KTS unit, select the VIN identification tab and you will be presented with boxes to enter the digits. Instead of entering the number, click the “VIN Readout” button and the full vehicle details will appear. This feature isn’t available on some older vehicles as they don’t have the ability to electronically store the VIN. In these situations all vehicle details will have to be entered manually. Reference info button leading directly to further information for trouble shooting If ESI[tronic] returns a fault code on a vehicle, and has brought up the fault code description screen, there can be several options to try in order to solve the issue. Instead of leaving that chapter to go back to the main menu, for example to find a wiring diagram, you can jump straight to relevant information by clicking on the “Reference info” button. This is located at the bottom left hand side of the screen. b.The DDC programme is found inside the main menu of ESI 2.0, under “Hardware Settings”. Click on the button and you’ll find a drop-down list, which includes an electrical terminal diagram (wiring diagram) option. Other useful options on this drop down are: installation position table; air/fuel pipe diagram; connection to vehicle location. KTS Pass-Thru ability Pass-Thru enables a KTS unit to install and update a car’s internal software – typically the preserve of franchised dealers. This covers ECU updates, some coding and other important technical info. a.You’ll need to ensure you KTS system is up to date. Visit the Bosch Euro 5 website: http:// rb-aa.bosch.com/aa/en/euro5/ index.htm and download the free software patch. This allows you to make changes to the KTS via the DDC programme. c.Open Hardware Settings and press “Start DDC” This will open another dialogue box allowing you to tick and activate the Pass-Thru option. d.Once ticked, accept and press OK. AutoIntelligence | Issue 19 | Winter 2014 e.The KTS unit is now capable of Pass-Thru. However, you will need to set up an account with the vehicle manufacturer. All details are available on the Bosch Euro 5 website and we are currently running Pass-Thru courses. Full details are available from the Bosch Training Team. The RB Key for easy vehicle identification The RB Key, or Robert Bosch key, is a specific reference unique to each and every vehicle on ESI, and is extremely useful in easily identifying a vehicle when calling the technical hotline. It can also save time when included on your customer database, as you don’t have to search for the vehicle details on the KTS the next time the vehicle visits the workshop. Steps to find the RB key: a.With the car connected to the KTS, find out the car’s VIN (see Tip 1). b.This will produce an RB key automatically, which is displayed at the top left of the screen, with the vehicle details. 11 It’s important to remember that these online updates do not replace the need to install the update discs that KTS users receive through post three times a year. The online updates provide supplementary information which complement the essential updates supplied on the discs. Steps: c.The RB key option can be switched on in the main menu under User settings, Vehicle identification. Simply tick the ‘Display RB key in results list’ box From the main menu, choose “Online Update” and enter your customer number and password when prompted. The download options will appear and the software updates will start to download. Online updates The introduction of ESI 2.0 allows online software updates, keeping your diagnostic equipment right up to date. Available free of charge via the internet, they ensure that you’re always in possession of the latest vehicle information provided by Bosch. 01895 838193 | [email protected] | www.boschautoparts.co.uk AutoIntelligence | Issue 19 | Winter 2014 12 How to fit modern car batteries The days of connecting and forgetting a car battery are coming to an end. Today’s batteries need to be installed correctly or the customer may soon need to return to the garage. This step-bystep guide will help you to correctly fit the right battery in the right way. 1 Select the correct battery for the vehicle. 6 Plug in the Bosch KTS unit to the car’s 16 pin DLC (Data Link Connector). Without battery coding, the car’s battery management system won’t work correctly and some vehicle functions will cease. The worst case scenario is that the vehicle may not even start. In this guide, we’ll use Bosch’s ESI 2.0 software to demonstrate the fitting of the battery. ESI 2.0 is capable of installing several brands of batteries, but the list of battery brands changes by application. You should fit a battery support unit before starting any work. This retains the car’s electronic memory eg. radio stations, ECU codes, sat nav settings, etc. Without a support unit, the car’s system may reset to the factory default. It’s important to follow the entire installation process from start to finish, as the coding section of this process cannot be omitted. 11 From the list, select “Service adaption”. 16 Select the new battery ampere hours. 2 Connect a battery support unit, such as the BAT490, to retain codes and instrument display information. This should remain connected throughout the battery fitting process. 7 Turn on KTS unit and select vehicle details either manually or via VIN look up. 12 Then select “Battery replacement”. 17 When prompted enter the battery serial number. On a Bosch battery, the serial number can be found on the barcode. This is a 13 digit number, but you will only need to enter the first 10 digits. AutoIntelligence | Issue 19 | Winter 2014 3 13 4 Remove the old battery, ensuring you take off the negative terminal first followed by the positive one. 8 5 Install the correct new battery, ensuring the positive terminal is connected first and the negative second. If there is a vent tube ensure it is fitted to the new battery. 9 Click on the Diagnosis tab and select Energy Management from the drop down list. 13 10 Select “Electric Energy Management System” in the drop down list and press enter. 14 You will then see this note on the screen. Please read carefully. Ensure the battery is correctly located in the tray and clamped into position. Check the error memory for fault codes present. If no codes present, continue to the next stage, but make a note of any fault codes before clearing them and starting the battery coding process. 15 Select correct vehicle details. Enter brand of new battery. 18 The next screen will display a confirmation of selection criteria. Press continue, then close programme and remove battery support unit. Bosch in the new BMW 4 Series Coupé ▶Airbag control ▶Brake booster ▶ Common rail diesel injection system ▶Engine control unit ▶Gasoline direct injection ▶Hot-film air-mass meter ▶In-tank unit ▶Lambda sensor ▶Parking Assistant ▶Spark plug or glow plug ▶Start/stop starter Parking made easy The Parking Assistant, part of Bosch’s Park Distance Control system, recognizes suitable parallel parking spaces along a road as the car drives past, and informs the driver. Once activated the Parking Assistant takes over and automatically guides the vehicle into the space, but the driver can cancel the manoeuvre at any time by taking hold of the steering wheel. The Park Distance Control system can also assist the driver with general parking; with ultrasonic sensors at the front and rear of the vehicle measuring the position of possible obstacles. An intermittent tone tells the driver how much space remains, while a diagram of the vehicle and obstacles are shown on the control display. This makes it much easier to manoeuvre in and out of parking spaces, especially when reversing. Lower consumption and emissions Low fuel consumption and low vehicle emissions are a priority for car manufacturers – and the premium segment is no exception. The Bosch hot-film air-mass meter fitted in the BMW 4 Series Coupé is a vital component, and key in optimising fuel economy. Bosch Double-Platinum spark plugs The BMW’s inline 6-cylinder engine is equipped with Double-Platinum spark plugs from Bosch. The high-quality platinum alloy used in these spark plugs means they’re extremely durable - an important property in today’s engines. The high temperatures in an engine’s combustion chamber mean the spark plugs have to function under particularly tough operating conditions. Bosch hot-film air-mass meter HFM7 Featuring innovative technology and state-of-the-art microelectronics, the Bosch hot-film air-mass meter HFM7 includes integrated temperature, humidity and pressure sensors. It continues to function precisely and reliably, even under the harshest conditions, and is highly resistant to contamination. Measuring the temperature of the aspirated air, it sends data to the engine control unit, which then precisely calculates the correct quantity of fuel required – ensuring maximum efficiency. AutoIntelligence | Issue 19 | Winter 2014 15 Safety takes priority: Seat Leon with assistance systems developed by Bosch The Seat Leon is setting the benchmark in its class, thanks to its innovative technical equipment – and a large number of these highlights come from Bosch. Bosch in the Seat Leon ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶ Alternator Common rail diesel injection system Engine control unit Fatigue detection system Gasoline direct injection Glow plug or spark plug Lambda sensor Mid-range radar Multi-purpose camera Starter Start/stop system Wiper system The third generation of the Seat Leon now comes with a range of innovative assistance systems from Bosch. Maximising safety and comfort, they help it stand out from rivals by offering the kind of features previously reserved for premium vehicles. Multi-purpose camera The multi-purpose camera from Bosch is a key component in the new Seat Leon, filming an area of road up to 120 metres in front of the vehicle. High-performance software then analyses the images, recognising road markings for the lane departure warning system. If the vehicle inadvertently approaches a lane marking, the system automatically steers it back toward the middle of the lane. The multi-purpose camera provides data for other safety systems, including the dynamic light control function, which provides the best possible visibility at night without blinding oncoming traffic. Data from the multi-purpose camera allows the emergency brake assistant to intervene if the driver takes their eyes off the road for a split second and the vehicle in front suddenly brakes. Initially the system emits an audible signal to warn the driver but, if the driver fails to respond, the system then briefly applies the brakes and then immediately starts partial braking. As soon as the driver presses the brake pedal, the system provides extra braking power if required. This ensures that, wherever possible, the vehicle comes to a standstill before it hits the vehicle in front and prevents an accident. Adaptive Cruise Control Another innovative highlight fitted in the new Seat Leon is the Adaptive Cruise Control system from Bosch. The driver sets the speed in exactly the same way as on a conventional cruise control system, but the car doesn’t merely maintain the selected speed - it also brakes and accelerates automatically. The key component in this system is the midrange radar sensor, which precisely measures the distance and speed of the vehicles in front. Successful in use: Bosch DoublePlatinum spark plugs and Duraterm High Speed glow plugs. The Seat’s fuel-efficient 1.2-litre and 1.4 litre TSI engines are equipped with Bosch’s Double-Platinum spark plugs, which offer a long service life. With an insulator extended by 8 mm and improved spark over insulation, thanks to a shortened high-voltage contact, the spark plug works flawlessly with the engines’ high compression cylinders. The plug’s ground electrode is precisely aligned with the thread which, after installation, is also aligned with the fuel injection valve to provide the optimum ignition point for the air/ fuel mixture. Bosch’s low-voltage glow plug Duraterm High Speed is fitted to the Leon’s diesel engines and reaches its operating temperature of 1000°C in less than three seconds. This improves cold-running characteristics and ensures the TDI diesel engines start reliably. Thanks to its long post-glow time of 360 seconds and the intermediate glow, it provides smooth running no matter the engine load. 01895 838193 | [email protected] | www.boschautoparts.co.uk AutoIntelligence | Issue 19 | Winter 2014 16 Bosch goes the distance at Le Mans with Audi win Once again Bosch proved a driving force behind the world’s longest running endurance race, providing technology to 50 per cent of the cars in this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans including the revolutionary Audi R18 e-tron Quattro. With 2014 being the breakout year for hybrid technology at Le Mans, Audi, Porsche and Toyota all embraced the LMP1 2014 regulations, designed to allow a greater variety of energy recovery systems. Using different combinations of petrol or diesel engines, two or four-wheel drive, as well as kinetic or thermal energy recovery and storage, all took very different approaches when producing their race cars. The winning R18 e-tron Quattro combines a 3.7-litre V6 diesel engine with a flywheel accumulator system, which stores energy harvested under braking, which in-turn powers the car’s front wheels. In addition to providing the complete common-rail diesel injection system, Bosch also provided the starter, generator and wiring harness and Motor-Generator unit which powers the front wheels. Bosch Motorsport produced the car’s engine control unit which integrated the diesel and electric power systems to deliver the race winning performance. A range of different technologies were also used by other manufacturers during the event, including Bosch gasoline direct injection technology with Ferrari, Bosch Motorsport collision avoidance system with Chevrolet and engine control units and data loggers with Porsche. A night to remember As the sun set, it was time for attendees of the first Bosch Car Service national conference to enjoy some down time before getting dressed up for a gala-dinner and an evening of entertainment, with comedian Ed Byrne and a seven-piece swing band. Special guests on the night included the four Bosch Car Service Bangers4BEN teams, who had flown in to Birmingham from Germany. Halfway through their sponsored drive across Europe, they updated the audience on their progress and regaled with stories of their adventure. Demonstrating the generosity of the Bosch Car Service network, donations on the night swelled the total amount raised for the automotive industry’s benevolent fund BEN by £5,000. It was also a special night for Ryan Davies, of Eltham Test Centre, who was awarded Bosch Car Service top apprentice of the year. The morning after The fund-raising continued the next day, as 11 bleary eyed Bosch staff set off on a 111 mile cycle challenge to ride, as a team, from the Hilton Metropole Birmingham to BEN’s new Lynwood care home in Ascot. In all, the Bosch Car Service network conference and the Bangers4BEN and Bikers4BEN helped raise over £8,000 for BEN.
