people put down roots. Even if they just
arrived last year! This is the chosen home
of many newcomers from areas around
Houston, D/FW and other states. You will

true: that being nestled in the middle of the
“core of Texas” is the perfect place to be.

Chairman’s
President’s
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the
Washington County Chamber of Commerce,
Whether you have chosen to visit our
community, make this your next home, or
build your business here, you will find that
Washington County has so much to offer
you on every level.
Message
Message
Welcome to Washington County!
Whether you’re here for a day or for a
lifetime, we hope this 2014 edition of the
Chamber magazine will give you a small
glimpse of all that Washington County has
to offer.
What kind of Community is Washington
County? If you ask the 750+ Chamber
Member businesses, you’d probably get
different answers like, “a great place to
raise a family,” or “a prosperous place to
own a business.” But one answer all of
them will agree on is that Washington
County is “home.”
Home is where your roots are and ours
are just about the deepest you can find in
Texas. Proudly known as the “Birthplace of
Texas”, Washington County is not only
home for our State, but also home for
many thriving businesses, the 33,000+
people who live and work here, and the
hundreds of thousands of tourists who
visit every year for bluebonnets, beautiful
scenery, festivals, and more.
Why have so many chosen to make this
community home? Washington County is
blessed with top-notch schools, wonderful
medical facilities, great options for dining
and entertainment, antiques, art, Blue Bell,
Blinn College, and many, many more fine
businesses. Take all these elements and
put them in the most beautiful land in the
Great State of Texas and what have you
got? Home.
From our rich cultural past, our vibrant
present, and our promising future,
welcome to Washington County. Welcome
home.

Promoting Tourism in
Brenham is not only a
wonderful place to reside it’s a great place to visit.
That’s where the Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) steps in.
Operated by the Washington County Chamber of Commerce
under a contract with the City of Brenham, the CVB serves numerous functions.
Besides assembling the annual Visitor Guide filled with the unique
and interesting attractions and tourism-related businesses that
Washington County has to offer, the CVB staff also places advertising to attract visitors, convention delegates and conference attendees to the area. Along with both print and online advertising
Be sure to stop by the new Washington County Visitor Center inside the
programs, the CVB creates publicity and promotions to generate
restored Simon Theatre in historic Downtown Brenham (115 W. Main St). public awareness of events, activities and all that the city
and county have
to offer. In addition, CVB staff maintains and continuously updates the visitor
website,www.visitBrenhamTexas.com.
The staff works closely with group tours and convention groups and attends trade shows to
promote Brenham and Washington County. They provide “welcome gift bags” to motor coach
tours, conference attendees and VIP delegations visiting the county. Promoting destination
weddings in Washington County is also a focus for marketing efforts. The CVB partners with
other agencies, associations and businesses, as needed, to promote this very special destination. The work of the CVB benefits every resident and every business, whether or not
tourism-related.
All these efforts combine to bring visitors who spend dollars in our communities, shop in
beautiful downtown stores, sample many area restaurants and overnight in area hotels and
bed & breakfast lodging properties.
CVB staff members also annually prepare a marketing plan and budget separate from the
Chamber’s budget that the city’s Hotel Occupancy Tax board must approve and recommend
to the City for adoption before any hotel occupancy tax dollars are expended. The use of
these tax dollars is strictly governed by State Tax Code and, in general, must be devoted to
advertising and public relations efforts that promote visitors, tourists and conventions to
come to Brenham and Washington County.
The Visitor Center and CVB staff are located in the 1925 Simon Theatre building at 115 West
Main in downtown Brenham. The theatre lobby, visitor center and retail space are the first
beneficiaries of the planned Simon restoration. The old theatre and upstairs ballroom will
also be restored to provide space for meetings, parties, conferences and other activities.
The efforts of the Chamber’s CVB are focused
and directed to promoting Washington County...
as a great destination for fun, adventure, and relaxation.

Leadership Washington County
Leadership Washington County (LWC) is a prestigious ten-month
program committed to educating, training and motivating existing and
emerging leaders to build more effective skills for the future benefit
of Washington County. Over 400 men and women have graduated
from LWC, and the nineteenth session is now in progress. Applications
are accepted each year from June 1 through July 20.
Program Goals
•
To educate, train and provide experiences that enhance
leadership skills.
•
To provide opportunities for participants to develop
lasting relationships among community leaders.
•
To provide greater awareness of community issues and
opportunities to serve locally.
•
To provide greater access to community resources and
networking.
•
To motivate participants to help make a difference in our
community by becoming actively involved.
Each year, the program begins in August with an orientation
followed by a team-building retreat. Day-long sessions are held once
a month from August through May.
LWC participants attend educational sessions covering many
aspects of this community and region. The sessions create an awareness of the resources of Washington County and put the class in
contact with local experts in various fields. Participants gain valuable
experience from interacting with each other and forming lasting
relationships with other professionals.
Employers are encouraged to send key personnel through the class,
and then benefit by having an employee who has sharper skills, knowledge of resources in the county, and connections with other local
leaders.
The LWC program involves a time commitment of one day a month
for ten months and a tuition fee that covers all tours, meals, group
travel and supplies. The program culminates with a graduation banquet in May.
For more information, contact the Chamber at (979) 836-3695.
You may also view more details and the annual application on the

Stephen F. Austin chose the area between
the Brazos and Colorado Rivers for his
original settlers because it was fertile land
and it was a beautiful land. Washington
County is truly the “birth place of Texas” and
has played an important pivotal part in the
history of Texas. Many historic sites and
museums in Washington County offer a
glimpse of that history and help to tell the
story of early Texas.
It is not just the beauty and the history that
make Washington County special. The
people make it special. Yes, there are direct
descendants of the original settlers but most
of us are those who have chosen Washington
County for their home and are a down to
earth, friendly, charitable people who will
make your visit special and you will be glad
you had a chance to meet.
We are proud of our community and on
behalf of the Commissioners Court we are
glad you came to visit and hope you come
back often. If you are thinking of moving to
Washington County you’ll find we welcome
with open arms down to earth, friendly,
charitable folks. They are a good fit for us and
we will be a good fit for you.

Burton Mayor
In the rolling hills of western Washington
County you will find this charming little town
of 359 friendly, hospitable citizens. This
wonderful city called Burton was established
in the mid 1870’s. It has many historical
treasures. Among them are a restaurant with
French cuisine, several antique shops, a bed
and breakfast, and a down home country café.
Tourist and sightseers are also attracted to
the old railroad depot and former lumber yard.
Burton is home of “The Official Cotton Gin
Mueseum oof Texas” with the historic 1914 gin
as the key exhibit.
The friendly residents will always welcome
strangers, new businesses, and residents. It
would be a pleasure to see you in Burton soon.

As the Texas State Senator who represents Washington County in the Texas
Legislature, I would like to say welcome. As the "Birthplace of Texas" and the
county named after the first President, George Washington, Washington
County is an area rich in history. It was right here in Washington County, along
the banks of the Brazos River, that in 1836 Sam Houston and others signed
the Texas Declaration of Independence, severing ties to Mexico and declaring
Texas a free and independent state.
Washington County's scenic rolling hills and seasonal wildflowers are a
beautiful backdrop for the area's generations-old farmlands, two wineries,
the world famous Blue Bell Creamery, and numerous historic museums.
Whether you are just passing through or have decided to make Washington
County your home, please let us know if there is anything we can do for you.

tests and diagnostic imaging completed, as well as see a doctor on a
walk-in basis in one location, all at the new St. Joseph “Superclinic” in
Brenham.
Brenham Clinic has been faithfully and compassionately serving
Washington and surrounding counties for the past 57 years. The
founders of Brenham Clinic, Dr.W.F. Hasskarl, Sr., Dr.W.F. Hasskarl, Jr., and
Dr. Thomas Giddings, began with a shared passion for providing highquality healthcare to the Washington County area. For over half a
century, their vision has served as the guiding force for the Brenham
Clinic. The clinic has grown into a multi-specialty facility that is home
to 15 dedicated physicians and a team of healthcare experts who
utilize advanced medical technology and techniques to care for the
members of our community.
The new clinic incorporates three medical services in one building:
a family medicine practice, a St. Joseph Express walk-in clinic, and a
diagnostic center. The 9,400 square-foot medical building is located at
110 Highway 290, on the westbound feeder Road in Brenham near
Progress Drive.
Today, the Brenham Clinic touches more lives than ever before. It
has expanded its facilities, service lines, and programs to provide the
advanced level of care you expect, close to home. These amenities
include a full laboratory, digital radiology, personalized women’s health
services, and advanced diagnostic imaging and MRI services through
the Hasskarl-Giddings Imaging Center.
The Clinic’s physicians work with a talented staff of healthcare
professionals to provide experienced diagnosis and treatment in the
fields of Family Practice, General Surgery, Internal Medicine,
Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics and Radiology. Through its affiliation
with College Station Medical Center, additional medical specialties
are also available in the fields of Cardiology, Orthopedic Surgery,
ENT/Otolaryngology, Audiology, Allergy, Nephrology, Neurology,
Neurosurgery, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Physical Medicine, Pain
Management, Oncology, Rheumatology and Urology.
The Family Medicine Office features Jacques Mamigonian, M.D.
Known by his patients as “Dr. Jack,” he is a board-certified Family
Medicine physician who has been with St. Joseph for more than three
years. In addition, the clinic features visiting specialists each week
including Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Cardiology, ENT, and
Obstetrics/GYN.
The “Superclinic” is home to St. Joseph Express-Brenham, designed
for people who have an immediate need to see a physician, but can’t
get in to see their regular doctor. The Express office is open every day,
including holidays. Express hours are typically 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. MondayFriday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays and
holidays.
The medical complex also houses a diagnostic center offering
laboratory services and imaging center with X-ray and CT imaging
services available. On-site lab and imaging provides quicker test
results for physicians and prompt care for patients.
St. Joseph has a long history with Brenham and Washington County.
Their goal is to provide convenient access to health care with the kind
of service Brenham residents have come to expect from St. Joseph.”
St. Joseph was established in 1936 and has clinical locations across
the Brazos Valley, including four hospitals, two nursing homes, two
walk-in clinics, and more than a dozen family medicine clinics.
Among the Brenham Clinic’s proudest accomplishments is one
designed especially for the care and comfort of women. The Clinic
was the first in the community to introduce advanced digital
mammography technology and “same-day reads” at the HasskarlGiddings Imaging Center. This comprehensive breast diagnostic
program allows women to receive their digital mammogram and their
preliminary results on the same day, relieving the anxiety and worry
that are common while waiting on mammography results.
EMS
The facility provides a warm, serene and comfortable environment
for women during their mammogram appointments. Each
mammogram is immediately reviewed by Dr. John McIntire, a boardcertified radiologist with over 30 years of experience in diagnostic
radiology. Dr. McIntire meets with each patient to explain their results
and what steps, if any need to be taken.
The Washington County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has
become state-recognized as a leader in Texas. The department’s
innovative and progressive management allows for unparalleled
emergency medicine for its community and visitors. The department
operates as a Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) Department, the
highest license available by the Texas Dept. of State Health Services.
The work of the Brenham Clinic doesn’t end at its front doors. It
continues in the community through the support and sponsorship of
numerous organizations, groups, businesses, and events benefiting
Washington County. One of the Brenham Clinic’s signature events is
the annual “Paint the Town Pink” celebration in October, which
supports breast cancer awareness and the importance of early
detection.
The EMS handles over 650 square miles of rural Texas and responds
to over 5,100 emergency calls. It is the only all MICU Level EMS
Provider in the Brazos Valley. In 2011, the department became one of
the 2% of EMS providers in the country that carry a life-saving
medication known as TNkase (clot buster). In 2013, it became a part
of even a narrower group when it initiated its new field blood
administration program. Less than 1% of EMS departments in the U.S.
have the ability to administer blood products to dying trauma patients
in the field.
Over the past 57 years, the Brenham Clinic has made a difference
in countless lives. The Clinic is especially proud of its heritage and
the role they play in shaping the health and well-being of the
community every day.The Clinic’s pledge to you is that it will continue
to honor the vision of its founding physicians in striving for excellence
in healthcare for anyone and everyone in need.
St. Joseph “SuperClinic” opened its doors in Brenham in 2012.

appointments with a family medicine doctor, see specialists, have lab

All of these great medical care providers located in Brenham
combine to offer a full-range of health care services, as needed by any
resident of any age.
The department operates one of the only advanced life-support
special operations teams in the state. The focus of this division is to
provide advanced emergency medicine to unfortunate and unusual
circumstances. Providing water rescue boat-based and land rescue
(high angle) paramedics to Washington County and surrounding
areas.

Operations. The division has 15 highly-trained water rescue
technicians that in 2008 became part of the world-renowned Texas
Task Force 1 US&R Team.
Recently the department has expanded its role into the Community
Paramedicine field. This program focuses on improving overall health
of a community and saving precious healthcare dollars within a
community. The program specifically targets high risk areas of the
healthcare populations and improves efficiencies within the system.
The EMS has received numerous state and national awards for its
accomplishments including being named 2007 "State EMS Provider
of the Year, 2007 State EMS Administrator of the Year Award, 2010 State
Injury Prevention Award, and the 2011 Brazos Valley Regional
Advisory Council Member of the Year.
FIRE
The Brenham Fire Department was created by City ordinance on
June 10, 1867. The company was founded, on the surface, to protect
against fire, but in actuality, it was created as a military organization to
protect the lives and property of citizens from Union soldiers stationed
here during the Reconstruction era.
In May, 1879, the BFD became the proud owner of a new Silsby
Steam Engine, which could pump 600 gallons per minute. It was
designed to be drawn by hand or by horses. The historically preserved
engine now sits in a special exhibit next door to the Brenham Heritage
Museum.
The current BFD has 15 paid Fireman including a Fire Chief, Deputy
Chief/Fire Marshal, Deputy Fire Marshal, 3 Captains and 9 Apparatus
Operators, plus an administrative assistant and over 50 volunteers. The
BFD responds to over 500 emergency calls a year. They provide rescue
services, first-responder fire suppression, technical rescue and
hazardous materials mitigation within Washington County. The BFD
performs smoke detector service checks, home fire safety assessments,
pre-incident planning surveys, and flood water removal services within
the City.
The Fire Marshal’s Office works with contractors to assist in code
compliance for fire alarms and suppression systems being installed
in new and remodeled commercial and industrial buildings.
During Fire Prevention Month in October, the BFD educates
children from Pre-K through 4th grade about fire safety presented by
the Fire Marshal, BFD staff members and Mascot, Sparky.
Also offered are Department and Museum tours, County Fair
Presentations, National Night Out visits, employee training for
businesses & industries with hands-on operating of a Fire Extinguisher.
The members of the BFD own and operate the Fireman’s Training
Center. This popular facility provides an important service to the
community and is utilized year-round for social and business events.
Dept. members host two annual fundraisers: Spring Fish Fry and
Fireman’s Fiesta held in August. The BFD Ladies Auxiliary is a huge
support to the Department with generous donations from profits of
their own fundraisers.
With a rich heritage and many accomplishments to their credit, the
members of the Brenham Fire Department look forward to an even
greater future with the same objectives as in 1867, “To Serve the
Community.”

Local Economy
AN
EX PAN D I N G
A total of 2,033 new jobs have been
added to the payroll during the period
2000 to 2012, with most of those occurring
in the areas of manufacturing, professional services, retail, wholesale and
governmental.
Growing Businesses
and the Community
According to studies done by the
Houston Branch of the Federal Reserve
Bank of Dallas, Washington County has
one of "the most solid" economies for a
rural community in Texas. Washington
County's healthy economy is bolstered by
a number of factors: population growth,
job creation, diversity of employment,
location, retail sector, tourism, comparatively low taxes, and a superb quality
of life.
Due to the upsurge of nearby major
metropolitan areas and a shift in the job
market, the population in Washington
County saw a resurgence in the last two
decades. From 2000 to 2012, the
population in the county increased by
12% from 30,373 to 33,938. During the
same time period Texas had an increase of
23%. This population growth is not only a
result of a healthy economy, but also a
quality of life that attracts both businesses
and families.
Some regard private enterprise as
if it were a predatory tiger to be
shot. Others look upon it as a cow
that they can milk. Only a handful
see it for what it really is...a strong
horse that pulls the whole cart.
As an example of business growth, 36
major expansions have occurred since
2000 by local manufacturers and a
substantially increased number of retail
establishments have called Washington
County home.
Coupled with an influx of outside
dollars (primarily from tourism) and its
increase in population, Washington
County has witnessed a 68.1% increase in
gross sales during the period 2002 to 2012
(from $1,087,888,518 total annual sales to
$1,829,677,768). Tied with increases in
local sales, the county possesses strong
export sales, including oil & gas,
manufacturing, wholesale, and retail to
outside residents.
30 Washington County Magazine
2014 Edition
- Winston Churchill
A remarkable diversity allows our local
economy to be independent of single
industry fluctuations, thus avoiding the
severe economic downturns that some
rural communities experience. Currently,
Washington County supports a labor
force of just over 17,400 employees
and has experienced an average unemployment rate of 5.5% over the past
five years.
Brenham State Supported Living Center
and Blue Bell Creameries rank as the
county's largest employers. Major manufacturers and wholesalers include
Tempur-Sealy, Valmont
Industries,
Emerson, RR Donnelly, Brenham
Wholesale Grocery, and MIC Group. Other
major employers include the educational
systems, prim-arily Blinn College and
Brenham ISD;
and professional
businesses,
including
Germania
Insurance’s state headquarters and Scott
& White Hospital-Brenham.
The average household income in the
county was $58,392, according to the U.S.
Census. As an example of economic
growth, the Bureau of Economic Analysis
recently released numbers that showed
Total Personal Income in Washington
County had risen by 86% from 2000 to
2012. This figure ranks above other
communities in the region. The TPI
combined with a comparatively low tax
rate equates to a standard of living
attractive both to employers and
employees.
