“Epidermolysis Bullosa… the worst disease you’ve never heard of.”
-Brett Kopelan, Executive Director debra of America
A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
On behalf of the debra of America Board of Trustees
and my fellow committee members, please accept our sincere
gratitude for your support of the 14th Annual Mats Wilander
Tennis & Golf Benefit. As a direct result of your generosity,
we are able to accomplish two very important objectives.
First, we are able to support the innovative research that will
lead to treatments and a cure for Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB).
Second, it enables us to provide the supportive services and
the programs intended to ease the inherent burden of living
with “the worst disease you’ve never heard of.” We at debra
appreciate your support in achieving our goal of a world
without this horrible disorder.
It truly is my privilege to honor two incredible people this year,
Philip Reilly, MD, JD and Courtney Roth. Each has had, and
will continue to have, a profound effect on the EB community.
Philip is an accomplished entrepreneur, writer and investor
who championed the single largest investment, into a
treatment for EB. Courtney became the voice of those
suffering with EB when she garnered national attention writing
about her daily struggles caring for her child, Tripp.
Unfortunately, Tripp lost his battle with EB in January of this year.
As you enjoy your evening, we ask that you take a moment to remember those that have lost their battle with
EB and to reflect on those that are suffering now. Your generosity will help us eradicate this disease and ease
the burden of living with it. The cost of doing nothing is too great. Be a part of the cure.
Thank you for your generosity this evening.
Sincerely,
Brett Kopelan
Executive Director

ABOUT debra OF AMERICA AND EPIDERMOLYSIS BULLOSA (EB)
The Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association of America (debra) was founded in 1980 and is the
only national not-for-profit organization dedicated to funding research and providing services and programs for
those with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) - “the worst disease you’ve never heard of.” To learn more, visit debra.org.
debra is dedicated to finding a cure for EB, which affects one out of every 50,000 live births in the United
States. EB is a genetic disorder characterized by chronic painful blistering and tearing of the skin from the
slightest friction or trauma. The skin and mucous membranes are so fragile that there is severe blistering – both
inside and outside the body. There is no cure or treatment. The only options are pain management, daily wound
care and bandaging.
Imagine your child living with, "the worst disease you've never heard of"




75% of their body covered in blisters or open wounds
Needing up to 6 surgical procedures a year so they can swallow liquids
Bandages costing more than $10,000 per month
Of those born with EB in 2010, 21% are no longer with us
Severe forms of EB cause patients to live with constant pain and suffering. The worst forms lead to eventual
disfigurement, disability and often early death. There are many patients who are diagnosed with milder forms
which, while they can be extremely difficult to live with, are non-disfiguring and non-lethal. EB affects both men
and women of all races and ethnic groups. Sometimes, it occurs as the result of a spontaneous genetic mutation
when there is no family history.
Research is making progress towards treatments, and hopefully an eventual cure for Epidermolysis Bullosa.

HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR PROGRAMS AND SERVICES
New Family Advocate
Wound care products and informational packets about medical supplies and issues related to EB are sent to all
new families. An experienced caregiver visits the home of new parents to train them in the care of an EB child.
EB Nurse Educator
Our nurse is available by email at [email protected] or by phone at (866)-DEBRA-RN for EB families, the
general public and the professional community to answer questions and provide guidance. As EB patients
experience secondary complications, the nurse will discuss treatment options, palliative care, wound care and
clinical trials in progress, as well as give physician referrals.
Wound Care Clearing House
Wound care supplies are sent to those who cannot afford them. These specialized, non-adherent bandages and
other necessary supplies can have a retail cost in excess of $10,000 per month. In many cases, private insurance,
Medicaid or Medicare do not cover the entire cost. We distribute more than $350,000 worth of supplies a year.
Family Crisis Fund
debra provides financial assistance to families for expenses related to the care or treatment of someone with EB,
their insurance deductibles, co-insurance or co-pays.
Smile Fund
We try to bring a little joy into EB patients’ lives, one smile at a time. Similar to wish granting, debra awards an
EB applicant a mini wish every month. Applicants ask for a plethora of things, like a webcam or an iPad.
Patient Care Conference (PCC)
debra hosts a biennial conference where EB families can come, free of charge, to meet with clinicians who are
specialists in EB and researchers who are looking for treatments and a cure. The primary investigators discuss
ongoing or planned clinical trials, while clinicians inform about trends in EB care.

2012 HONOREE
COURTNEY ROTH
Mother of Tripp Roth
website: “EB”ing a Mommy
May 14, 2009 was the happiest day of Courtney Roth's life. Tripp, her
first child, was born. Unfortunately, that day was also when her life
changed forever. Tripp was diagnosed with Junctional-Herlitz EB and
Courtney was told by physicians that he wouldn’t live a year. Tripp was
strong, meticulously cared for by Courtney (a trained LPN), and had an
incredible support system. However, two years and eight months later
on January 14, 2012, Tripp lost his battle with EB.
In Tripp’s short life, Courtney became a single stay-at-home mom, author
of a very popular blog, winner of awards and an inspiration to thousands including Kevin Clash, the creator of Elmo. Her poignant and emotionally
gripping writings of life with Tripp and the struggle of EB garnered
national attention with over eight million page views on her blog "EB"ing a
Mommy, over 16,000 Facebook followers, her story on ABC television
and a profile in Reader’s Digest.

LIVE AUCTION
001. PINE VALLEY GOLF CLUB FOURSOME | Pine Valley, NJ
Winner receives:
★ You + 3 guests will play 18-holes of golf at Pine Valley Golf Club
★ Includes lunch in the Club House
Pine Valley Golf Club is a members-only, private golf course located in Southern New Jersey’s Pine Valley. It
has been ranked as the #1 course in the world repeatedly by Golf Magazine and Golf.com. The course is praised
for the consistent level of challenge and conditioning on each hole, requiring thoughtful placement of the ball from
tee to green, and more specifically correct placement on approach shots to the green due to significant swales
and undulations. Among its many accolades, Pine Valley has arguably the best collection of par fives and par
threes in the world. The course prides itself in being one of the toughest challenges in all of golf, with a slope of
155 from the championship tees.
Pine Valley's trademarks are the par three 5th hole, which requires a well-placed 220 yard slightly uphill drive over
a lake into a small and sloped green, "Hell's Half Acre" (a barren wasteland on the par five 7th hole which is
probably the largest non-sea-side bunker in the world), "The Devil's Asshole" (an extremely deep bunker on the
par three 10th hole), and the famous par four 18th, which incorporates many different elements of the golf course
into a spectacular finishing hole. Guests will play with member Don Scanlon, and the day will include lunch in the
Club House. Date to be determined.
MINIMUM BID: $3,000
Value: Priceless

way to raise money for
debra in your town. Visit
debra.org/events to learn
more.
DONATE OR MAKE A
TRIBUTE
A donation to debra of America
contributes to our programs and
services as well as helping fund
research toward a cure. You can give
 online at debra.org/donate
 by mail to debra of America’s New

An honorary or memorial donation is
a meaningful way to remember a
loved one or celebrate an occasion.
The designated person/s will receive a
letter from debra indicating you made
a gift.

GIVE A GIFT OF STOCK
Gifts of securities are another way to
make a contribution to debra. A gift of
stock held more than a year entitles the
donor to a charitable deduction and is
exempt from capital gains tax. Contact
debra to get specifics of how to direct
your gift.
MAKE A PURCHASE AT
THE debra SHOP
Show everyone you support debra and
raise awareness for EB when you
purchase debra-branded merchandise
at debra.org/shop. Items change, so
please visit often.
SUPPORT debra
IN ESTATE PLANNING
Making a gift by will or trust is a way of
maintaining your legacy and ensuring
debra has the resources to continue its
important work. A simple sentence
added to your will could direct a
specific amount or a percentage of your
estate to debra.
