I
am excited to serve another year as President of the Bridgeport
Area Chamber of Commerce!
Over the past 49 years your Chamber has demonstrated its
commitment as a leader in the promotion and support of the
business community in the area. Membership is where our
organization starts — without our members we have no reason to
exist. It is the support of our member companies and individuals
that have made the Chamber a strong network for over 49 years.
The Bridgeport Area Chamber offers monthly luncheons every
third Thursday of the month and participates in Quarterly Mixers
with other Wise County Chambers. The Chamber also hosts three
major events a year with the Barnett Shale Sporting Clay Shoot,
Butterfield Stage Days and Coal Miners’ Heritage Days. These
events, along with new business ribbon cuttings, are the perfect
opportunity to promote your business with your peers. We have
a dedicated staff of two and a team of twelve board members
that come from a cross-section of the community. It’s the board

T
he Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce was first organized
sometime in the mid to late fifties with local pharmacist John
Burt as the first President. However, it has only been since 1964
that the Chamber’s records

Welcome to Bridgeport,
The City of Bridgeport is rich in history, strong community, and hometown
values. Located approximately 45 miles northwest of Fort Worth, Bridgeport
is one of the largest cities in Wise County. The City
proudly boasts its designation as the Stagecoach
Capital of Texas. We have a wide variety of yearround activities for residents and visitors alike,
including Butterfield Stage Days, the Coal Miners
Heritage Festival, and many more family friendly
activities. Bridgeport is proud of its unique historic
downtown shopping district, Community Center,
Bridgeport Stage, Visitor Center and Heritage
Museum, the 300-acre Northwest Off-Highway
Vehicle (OHV) Park, a summer swimming pool, and
much more. Bridgeport has seen many changes over
the last 140 years and the future looks better than ever. I welcome you to the

land has affected generations of Americans.
Bridgeport Heritage Museum
The Bridgeport Heritage Museum proudly occupies the lower level of
the Visitor Center. Since moving to the new location in September 2009,
new exhibits have been developed to interpret the history of Bridgeport
and take visitors on a visual tour of the first 100 years of the town’s past.
Colorful exhibits highlight the Butterfield Overland Mail Company
and Old Town Bridgeport era as well as the impact the railroad had
on Bridgeport. The valuable resources beneath the earth (such as coal,
natural gas, limestone and brick products) that have contributed to
the livelihood of Bridgeport are also captured in vivid 3-dimensional
exhibits. Interpretive exhibits also depict the importance of Lake
Bridgeport and agribusiness in the area.
The museum also offers a gift shop and rotating gallery for the
visitor’s benefit.

west. It is believed that
the building of the
toll bridge led to the
naming of Bridgeport.
he City of Bridgeport is approximately 6,045 in population and located some
45 miles northwest of Fort Worth. Bridgeport had its beginnings in the mid
1800’s when a toll bridge was built over the West Fork of the Trinity River to
allow the Butterfield Overland Mail Company’s stagecoach to cross on its way
west. Soon after the bridge was constructed, a community began to spring up
along the banks of the Trinity River. It is believed that the building of the toll
bridge led to the naming of Bridgeport.
With the coming of the railroad, the community gradually moved eastward
until the present location of Bridgeport was established. Much of the early
history of Bridgeport is closely tied to the discovery of coal in the late 1800’s,
and mining continued well into the late 1920’s.
The construction of a dam across the Trinity River west of Bridgeport in 1929
resulted in the creation of beautiful Lake Bridgeport. Today the lake is a source
of much enjoyment for residents of the area and visitors as well.
With the discovery of oil and gas in the 1950’s, Bridgeport experienced an
escalation in the economy and the population. Along with the rock industry,
oil and gas production remains an important factor in Bridgeport’s economy
today.
In recent years, the city of Bridgeport has worked hard to preserve the rich
heritage of its past. In 2009, the city of Bridgeport undertook renovations on
a building on Halsell Street, which at various times over the past 70 years
had housed the fire department, city hall, police station, and jail. Since the
building is located in the historic downtown district, every effort was made to
preserve the historical aspects of the building including the original tin ceiling
tiles.
In September 2009 the Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center
moved into the remodeled building at 812 A Halsell Street. A glass enclosure
was added to the front of the building to house a life-size replica of a Concord
stagecoach which was acquired by the community in 2007. After petitioning
the Texas State Legislature in 2009, Bridgeport officially became the
“Stagecoach Capital of Texas.” The Visitor Center continually welcomes guests
from across Texas as well as many other states and even foreign countries.

or two weekends of the year Bridgeport is home to colorful festivals
designed to remember the past and celebrate the present.
The Butterfield Stage Days Festival, held each year the second
weekend in May in Bridgeport’s Harwood Park, honors the proud
history of Bridgeport and its place on the Butterfield Overland Mail
Route.
The Butterfield Stage Days Festival is an all-day event with
entertainment for the whole family. Activities include craft and food
vendors, the Bridgeport Idol Contest, a pancake eating contest, a
carnival, stagecoach rides, rib cook-off, horseshoe tournament, petting
zoo, professional gunfighters, bounce houses, and much more!
Bridgeport celebrates another important part of its colorful history
at the annual Coal Miners’ Heritage Festival held in October
on Halsell Street in downtown Bridgeport. The day’s events
commemorate the regions’ coal mining industry which began when
coal was discovered in Bridgeport in 1860.
Activities for the day include living history demonstrations, chili
cook-off, food and craft vendors, live entertainment, pumpkin patch
pageant contest, baking contest, petting zoo, and pumpkin painting
and many more fall festival activities!

W
hat can compare with the pageantry and color of a
professional rodeo? The grand entry, the clowns, the
horses, and the cowboys themselves all contribute to the
excitement. Professional rodeo evolved from a working
lifestyle, and today’s cowboys carry on the rugged
tradition of their early predecessors. Today, rodeo offers
us a window into the past.
The first formal rodeo dates back to Cheyenne,
Wyoming in the late 1800’s, but rodeo did not become
recognized as a competitive sport until the early
twentieth century. Rodeo contestants first became
organized in 1936, and in 1975 they became known as
the “Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association” (PRCA).
Today the PRCA numbers over 9,000 cowboys and
sanctions more than 650 rodeos each year.
In 2007, The Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce and the
Bridgeport Riding Club joined forces to sponsor the first
annual Butterfield Stage Days PRCA Rodeo. This new
tradition has grown each year and has become an annual
event held the second weekend each May. The Butterfield
Stage Days PRCA Rodeo is proud to feature cowboys
from all across the nation as well as several foreign
countries. The rodeo is held at the Bridgeport Riding Club
Arena, located 1 ½ miles west of Bridgeport on FM 920.

Area Attractions
The museum is presently located in the lower level of the Bridgeport Visitor Center on Halsell Street
in downtown Bridgeport. Formerly the police station and jail, the building has undergone extensive
renovations and now provides a permanent place to preserve the history of the town and surrounding
area. Colorful exhibits depict the early coal mining in Bridgeport, construction of Lake Bridgeport,
and the development of the oil and gas industry in the area. For information call, 940-683-4341.
Bridgeport Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center
The Bridgeport Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center is located on Halsell Street
in downtown Bridgeport. The building has been extensively remodeled and also houses the
community’s authentic replica of a Concord stagecoach. A video depicting the history of the
Butterfield Overland Mail route is also a highlight of the Visitor Center. For information,

Northwest OHV (Off-Highway Vehicle) Park
Located just off Highway 101 on the north edge of Bridgeport, Northwest Park offers 25 miles of
exciting trails for the off-road enthusiast. The OHV Park is open to Jeeps, 4-wheelers, motorcycles
and any other vehicle that can be taken off-road. Restrooms and a covered pavilion are available for
park users. The park is open on Saturday and Sunday, and overnight camping is available the second

Bridgeport City Parks
Bridgeport is fortunate to have two family friendly city parks. Harwood Park features a swimming
pool, covered pavilion, restroom facilities, lighted walking trails, and a state-of-the-art playground.
Payne Park offers volleyball, skate-boarding, and picnic facilities. For information call, 940-683-3400
Lake Bridgeport and Wise County Park
The beautiful Lake Bridgeport area offers something for everyone - camping, fishing, boating,
swimming, or just relaxing. Wise County Park on the north end of the lake provides a number of
beautiful camp sites. For information, call 940-644-1910.
Bridgeport Falls Paddling Trail
The Bridgeport Falls low water weir dam creates a pleasant 5.8 mile looped paddling trail under a
lush canopy of native trees and other vegetation, located on the West Fork of the Trinity River. You
will paddle along the river’s sandy banks with occasional sandstone outcroppings for a float time 2.5-5
hours. This section of the West Fork Trinity River also offers fishing. For the nature enthusiast, you
will also find a diverse array plant and wildlife. For directions and information, call 940-683-3490.
Center for Animal Research and Education
CARE is a non-profit organization established to provide a safe haven for abused and abandoned
big cats. It is currently home to 53 big cats, including lions, white and orange tigers, leopards,
cougars and lemurs. Tours are conducted hourly on Saturday and Sunday from 11a.m. until 5p.m. For

Runaway Bay
Located just ten miles west of Bridgeport, Runaway Bay is a beautiful community along the
shoreline of Lake Bridgeport. Runaway Bay boasts a challenging 18-hole golf course, a modern
marina, and lodging at Westwind Manor. For information, call 940-575-4745.
Bridgeport Community Center
The Bridgeport Community Center is a premiere rental facility that provides a banquet hall, large
conference room meeting and full kitchen available for renting. The Fred Meyers Banquet Hall holds
up to 220 people and is perfect for meetings, events, and weddings. For information, call 940-683-3400.
The Bridgeport Country Club features a 9-hole golf course, a pro shop, restaurant, and club house
with meeting and banquet facilities. For information, call 940-683-9438.
Bridgeport Municipal Airport
Located just 8 miles west of Bridgeport on Highway 380, the airport offers 24-hour facilities.
The airport includes 33 privately owned hangars, 30 city owned hangars, and a 4,004 foot runway.
The terminal building provides internet service, weather information, and a pilot’s lounge. For

Bridgeport is fortunate to have an attractive, well-stocked library. The building itself is due in part
to a generous matching grant from John and Katherine Jackson. In addition to an extensive collection
of books, videos, and DVDs, the library also offers internet service. For information, call 940-683-3450.
Bridgeport Stage
The newly renovated theater known as the Bridgeport Stage provides an excellent facility for
meetings, concerts, and stage productions. For information, call 940-683-3400.
Bridgeport Camp and Conference Center
Since 1949 Bridgeport Camp and Conference Center, operated by the North Texas Conference
of the United Methodist Church, has offered Christian summer camps and retreat facilities to
thousands each year. Located on 200 acres above Lake Bridgeport, the camp includes a challenge
course, swimming pool, sand volleyball courts, and lakeside

Sid Richardson Scout Ranch
The 3,000 acre scout ranch, operated by the Longhorn
Council of Boy Scouts of America, is located on the shores
of beautiful Lake Bridgeport. Activities include an extensive
summer program as well as year-round camping. Lakeview
Lodge, located within the camp, is a full service conference

EADERSHIP: WEST WISE is a locally developed program based
on the belief that many ordinary citizens have extraordinary potential to
provide leadership in a variety of situations. It is an educational program
which provides an overview of the area,
including its resources and strengths, and a
look at its past and future. Topics addressed
throughout the year include history, economy,
education, quality of life, etc. The group also
tours several businesses in the area as well as
places of interest.
The classes are open to adults of all ages
who are interested in expanding their
knowledge of the West Wise area and
exploring opportunities of leadership in the
county.
The program has also expanded to
include a class of high school juniors and seniors
who are exploring topics of interest about West Wise. They are made aware
of the potential opportunities in the area to live and work here after they
complete their educational pursuits.
