It was created by the state legislature in 1991 to provide high-quality professional development to West Virginia educators through five distinct programs: • The Governor’s Academy for Teaching Excellence (GATE) • The Advanced Placement Program (AP) • The Principals’ Leadership Academy for New and Experienced Principals (PLA) • The Evaluation Leadership Institute (ELI) • The Mentoring and New Teacher Induction Program Each year, WVCPD works in collaboration with a host of partners across the state and throughout the country to provide state educators with high-level professional development . PLA for New Principals PLA for Experienced Principals About WVCPD WVCPD provides the following services for experienced principals: • Roundtable Discussions facilitated and hosted by K-12 administrators, university faculty and other outstanding educators. • Web site database that records professional development for all experienced principals. • Online approval of professional development credit hours. • Online professional development courses. Goals and Objectives • To provide professional growth opportunities that enhance instructional capabilities • To provide opportunities for experienced principals to network and learn from one another As part of PLA for New Principals, participants develop an action research plan that addresses a specific issue or need in their school. This is done with the support of their team leaders and other experienced principals. Goals and Objectives • To help successfully transition participants into their administrative and managerial roles • To help participants become effective instructional leaders in 21st Century schools Save the Dates PLA for New Principals September 19 - 20, 2007 Charleston Civic Center, Charleston, WV December 5 - 6, 2007 Stonewall Jackson Conference Center, Roanoke, WV April 22- 23, 2008 Waterfront Hotel, Morgantown, WV Technology in Focus WVCPD integrates and models technology into its professional development activities to give instructional leaders a better understanding of the tools available to enhance instruction, school and classroom management and student achievement. Our focus is essential in promoting educators as information producers who can tap into the positive impact technology can have on school performance. About PLA WVCPD’s Principals’ Leadership Academy (PLA) for New Principals and Experienced Principals addresses specific professional development needs in order to strengthen the skills and abilities of these two groups. PLA activities are fully supported by committed principals and others who serve on the Principals’ Advisory Council. (See back panel) As with all of its programming, the Center works hard to provide high-caliber learning opportunities as effectively and costefficiently as possible. This research-driven approach ensures West Virginia principals benefit from the kind of professional development offerings that will develop and sharpen their skills, and allow them to improve student achievement.
