information on health and human service resources in our community.
Take David, for example. He recently called United Way’s 2-1-1 looking
for help with an application for food
assistance. He also shared that he was
recovering from a heart attack and had
medical bills piling up, because he was
uninsured. He was applying for assistance through the hospital, but he was
told that he also needed to apply for
coverage through the Health Insurance
Marketplace. The process was confusing, and he was having difficulty getting through the application process.

his application for Social Security benefits and finding it challenging.

who have obtained temporary restraining orders
(TRO) the opportunity
to receive phone and/or
email notifications when
their TRO has been
served by law enforcement on the respondent.
By taking advantage of
the recent completion
and statewide activation
of the WI-VINE automated victim notification service throughout
Wisconsin’s 72 county
jails, the addition of the
protective order notification service is another
valuable
investment
in personal and public
safety.

access to timely and accurate notification when
their temporary restraining order has been served
on the respondent.”
According to the U.S.
Department of Justice,
approximately 1.3 million individuals are
victimized by domestic
violence annually and
an estimated 900,000
protective orders are
issued each year. Of
the countless petitioners who have been revictimized or killed by
their abusers, many did
not know whether their
orders had been served.
The time immediately
after a protective order
(temporary restraining
order or injunction) is
served can be particularly dangerous for the petitioner. The respondent
may react violently after
being served, putting
the petitioner at serious
risk. Giving the petitioner early notification
that their order has been
served will encourage
them to inform law enforcement and seek assistance immediately if
the respondent violates
the restraining order.
Sheriff Parks believes
that knowing that the order has been served on a
timely basis will also allow the petitioner to better protect themselves
and implement their
safety plan.
Petitioners throughout Marathon County
who are interested in
receiving an automated
phone and/or email notification regarding the
service of their protective order are encouraged to call 1-855-WI
VPO 4U (1-855-9487648) or log on to www.
vinelink.com, click on
the Wisconsin map, then
click “WI-VINE County
Jails/VPO VINE Protective Order” and then
on the “Protective Order” tab on the upper
left side of the screen.
To complete the voluntary registration process
the petitioner will need
the 12 digit CCAP case
number, county that issued their TRO and the
respondents first and last
name.
In addition, live operator assistance is
available 24 hours a day,
seven days a week for
callers who have questions or require additional help.
As of May 20, Marathon County is one of 60
counties providing the
VPO service. During
the course of the next
two months the county
will be joined by Sheriffs from across Wisconsin in the completion of
the statewide activation
of the VINE Protective Order service. The
VPO service was originally funded through a
$500,000 enhancement
grant provided by the
U.S. Department of Justice. Wisconsin is proud
to join eight other states
across the country that
are offering domestic violence victims an additional safety net against
potentially dangerous
individuals in their communities through the
VINE Protective Order
service.

(Wausau, WI) The Never Forgotten Honor Flight organization based in Wausau and the many organizations,
businesses and individuals who fund it flew eight World
War II veterans, 79 Korean War Veterans and one Vietnam War veteran to Washington, D.C. to see the memorials that honor their service on Monday, May 19, 2014.
Sixty-four guardians accompanied the vets on the trip to
assist them on their whirlwind one-day round trip that
departed Central Wisconsin Airport at 7:00 a.m. and returned approximately 10 p.m.
After Monday’s trip, the Never Forgotten Honor
Flight has taken nearly 1,500 veterans to Washington,
D.C. since the first flight in 2010. Two more trips are
planned this fall on September 8 and October 6. Any
veterans from World War II, the Korean War and the
Vietnam War are encouraged to submit an application as
soon as possible.
Veterans receive a free round-trip flight, and guardians pay $500 for the opportunity to accompany one or
two veterans on the trip. Veterans and guardians interested in taking a future Honor Flight must complete an
application at: www.neverforgottenhonorflight.org or
contact the organization at 715.573.8519. The veterans
are selected based upon the order in which their applications are received and the conflict they served in. Preference is given to World War II veterans, then Korean

Polka Club hosts
41st annual music
festival
The Central Wisconsin Music Festival will be
held June 14-15 at the Rothschild Pavilion, 1104
Park St., Rothschild.
There will be 10 hours of music on Saturday,
June 14, from noon to 10 p.m. with The Hauser Hot
Shots, Musical Brass and The Golden Aces. Sunday will start with a polka service at 10:30 a.m., followed by music from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. with
Chuck Thiel & The Jolly Ramblers, and They Hayes
Boys.
Food and beverages will be available. Lisa’s
Catering Service will provide food throughout the
weekend. Bakery and free coffee will be available
before the polka service, with Sunday lunch starting
at 11:30 a.m.
The Rothschild Pavilion features the largest and
best hard maple dance floor mounted on rail car
springs in North Central Wisconsin.

Gardening questions finally answered
Do you have a question on gardening, flowers, lawn,
trees or insects? Call the GARDENLINE at 715-2611237 or 1-800-234-1471. A trained Master Gardener
Volunteer will return your call. This service is available May-September each year.
2014 WAUSAU GARDEN CLINIC:
In addition to this phone service, insect and disease samples can be brought into the UW Extension
office. During the summer months Master gardener
Volunteers will help to identify bug and disease issues.
Volunteers will be available to answer general gardening questions WEDNESDAYS ONLY from 10 am—2
pm starting May 14th continuing through September
24th. No appointment is necessary to speak with a
Volunteer.
The UW Extension office is located at 212 River

Aquarium expert Darren Lettner will discuss the
importance of oceans, conservation, and the relationship between the oceans and the creatures in the
library’s aquarium. This event is held in conjunction
with other World Oceans Day events as an effort to
honor and protect our oceans.
Audience members will have an opportunity to ask
Darren questions, and children can work on art projects and activities. Children of all ages, their families, and anyone else interested in our aquarium or
ocean conservation are welcome to attend. Together,
