An 18-year-old woman was shot in the leg outside of Gage Park High School this afternoon, officials
said.
Paramedics on the scene reported that the woman suffered a graze wound to one leg, said
Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford. She was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak
Lawn, he said.

The school is at 5630 S. Rockwell St. Langford said the paramedics responded to 5650 S. Rockwell.

Chicago police officials said the shooting was reported at 3:55 p.m. near the school. No one was in
custody, police said.
A detective at the scene said he was told a group of males may have been fighting on the corner of
57th Street and Rockwell, just outside the school. He said this was preliminary information in an
ongoing investigation.
The detective said police were talking with one witness and that others had not come forward with
information.
The shooting victim, who was not a student, was not in critical condition, the detective said, and was
able to walk to the ambulance.

Two Gage Park sophomore girls, both 16, were at the scene after the shooting, waiting to be picked up
by a parent around 5 p.m.
They said violence is commonplace at the campus.
"I need to get out of this place," one girl said.
Detectives were on the scene Friday evening trying to piece together what happened, a Police News
Affairs spokesman said.
A Chicago public schools spokeswoman also said the woman was not a student.

When I was a kid we played baseball at Gage. Once a great place to play is not a neighborhood full of
thugs, villians and gang bangers. It's a shame that those who moved in didn't see fit to keep up the
neighborhood tradition of policing their own neighborhood.

Gage Park is my home high school, but I decided not to go to that school cause it's really not a safe
school, so I had to lie about my address in order to get accept to CURIE High School which is a safer
and better school then Gage!
