The 1962 live engagement at the Village Gate marked
Sonny Rollins’ first recording ever with Don Cherry,
as well as one of th earliest made by the saxophonist
following his three-year long selfimposed musical
exile. It was all recorded in a piano-less quartet format with Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Billy Higgins on
drums. While only three tunes from the gig (“Dearly
Beloved” in a highly edited form) were included on the
famous LP Our Man in Paris (RCA Victor LPM 2612), this 6-CD
collection adds all existing music taped during those
live sessions, totaling more than five hours of previously unreleased material in brilliant stereo sound.
Among the many highlights here are the unedited
Dearly Beloved (which is 10 minutes longer than the LP
version), the issued Oleo with an extra minute at the
beginning, Rollins’ only known reading of Alexander’s
Ragtime Band, and Home Sweet Home, plus extended
renditions of songs he only rarely recorded, such as
Solitude and Love Walked In.

Synovial Joints represents the most ambitious
project of Coleman’s 30-year career as a bandleader. The work was composed for a group
he calls the Council of Balance, a name he has
used in the past for his large-scale projects,
most significantly on his 1998 release Genesis
& the Opening of the Way. The new recording
features 21 musicians, including many who
play in his working band Five Elements:
Jonathan Finlayson (tp),
Anthony Tidd (e-b),
Marcus Gilmore (d), and
Miles Okazaki (g).

This release contains all existing recordings by the great Dinah Washington backed by orchestras
conducted and arranged by Don Costa. The discoverer of singer Paul Anka, Costa is best known for
conducting and arranging several hit albums by Frank Sinatra, including Sinatra and Strings and My
Way. These sessions with Dinah clearly show his mastery and are among the best made by the singer.
Among them are the songs originally comprised on the celebrated albums In Love (Roulette SR-25180)
and Drinking Again (Roulette SR-25183). Two complete sessions from the same period conducted by Fred
Norman, as well as an amazing ballad medley presenting Dinah backed only by flute and piano, have
been added here as a bonus.

Billie Holiday was probably the most lyrical and expressive female
tracks
vocalist in jazz history. This set compiles her complete sessions for
the legendary Commodore label. Made between Billie’s contracts for Columbia /
Okeh and Decca, these recordings present her in top form, backed by excellent
small groups featuring such names as Frankie Newton, Freddie Webster, Tab
Smith, Vic Dickenson, Eddie Heywood, and Sidney Catlett. Among the highlights
of the set are Billie’s first version of the
shocking “Strange Fruit”, which she used to
conclude her stage performances, as well as
readings of famous standards she would never
record again, such as “As Time Goes By” and “I’ll
Be Seeing You”. Two rare tracks which constitute
Billie’s only recordings with the Artie Shaw and
with the Paul Whiteman orchestras, have been
added here as a bonus.

American film composer George Duning (1908-2000) was the author
of many highly celebrated scores. This release compiles three of
his most famous soundtracks in their entireties: those of the films
The World of Suzie Wong (1960), directed by Richard Quine and
featuring William Holden; The Eddy Duchin Story (1956), directed by
George Sidney and starring Tyrone Power and Kim Novak; and Picnic (1955), directed by Joshua Logan and featuring William Holden
and Kim Novak again.
While Suzie Wong and Picnic present brilliant scores with most of
the music composed by Duning, The Eddy Duchin Story, a bioepic
film about the pianist who died before his time, showcases Carmen
Cavallaro at piano playing gorgeous arrangements by Duning of
typical pieces from Duchin’s repertoire.

This release contains all existing sessions recorded by alto saxophone legend Sonny Criss for the Imperial label. All of the dates
were made within a short period in 1956 and were issued on three

Sonny Criss Plays Cole Porter (Imperial LP 9024). The three albums
appear here in their entireties. Criss, who died prematurely in
1977 at the age of 50, is backed on these amazing sessions by

With the Jazz World celebrating 100 years of Lady Day’s birth, and when no new
musical material seemed to be possibly added to the singer’s large and wonderful
output, Uptown Records presents this collection of 2-CDs devoted to Billie, on which
various previously unknown broadcast recordings come to light. The subtitle speaks
about Holiday’s impossibility to work in New York clubs during most of those years,
due to losing her cabaret card (a document issued by the New York police) because
of her problems with drugs and alcohol.

The broadcasts present her in various different venues, in America and abroad, and
with a diversity of accompanying musicians. But what’s most remarkable here, as it
couldn’t be otherwise, is Billie’s voice. The program presents new versions of songs
from her usual repertoire, but also a few rarities, such a 1948 Los Angeles reading of
her classic but not so often recorded “Strange Fruit” (that program also includes the
rarely heard “Maybe You’ll Be There”), and a 1949 version throughout and sound quality is quite good considering the rarity of these documents. An amazing discovery.

Recorded live at the Lark Tavern, in Albany, on May 8, 1979,
four tracks from this exceptional concert had been previously
issued by Uptown on LP format in 1980 under the same title.
The recent CD release presented by Robert E, Sunenblick’s
label gives us the whole performance, adding three previously
unissued performances and extending the total time up to 75
minutes. Monterose is featured here as the only horn in a
quartet format playing a combination of original (“Lu-An” and
“Green Street Scene”) with well known Standards, among
them delicate version of Thelonious Monk’s “Ruby, My Dear”
and John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” (the latter, lasting nearly
12 minutes, if one of the never before released tracks and
deserved repeated listening). A very much welcomed release.

RESERVOIR MUSIC is a truly jazz connoisseur label holding a large and catalogue. Longtime producer Mark Feldman, who
founded the label when he parted company with Uptown Records where he had been a producing partner since 1981, states
that his criterion for signing an artist is first based about being a fan. He signs artists he personally enjoys hearing. That counts
for the several names repeated once and again in the Reservoir catalogue. Among them are such figures as Pepper Adams,
Kenny Barron, Nick Brignola, Claudio Roditi, J.R. Monterose, Tommy Flanagan, Joe Puma, Barry Harris, Peter Leitch, or
John Fedchock.
The sessions always present a brilliant sound quality, as for many years Feldman employed the legendary Rudy Van Gelder
Studios, and later on the Avatar Studios in Manhattan.

This release presents the complete recorded collaborations of
Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan between 1952 and 1957. All of
their piano-less quartets are here, including both their classic
1952-53 sessions and their 1957 Reunion LP, plus their recordings
from the same 1957 sessions with the addition of singer Annie
Ross. Also included are their quintets with Lee Konitz, and the two
Mulligan-Baker tentet sessions. These recordings were originally
issued by the Pacific Jazz, Capitol, Fantasy and GNP labels. An

the most interesting jazz groups from the late ‘50s, the Jazz Lab,

This set contains the complete Charlie Parker broadcasts at the
Royal Roost in New York. Recorded during a short period from
late 1948 to early 1949, these amazing programs showcase Bird
with his working quintet and contain some of the best improvisations by the great jazz master. While these broadcast have
been issued in edited form on various different sets, this edition
presents them in chronological order and in their complete form,
including all existing mannouncements and every single note
played by Bird. As a bonus, three rare broadcasts presenting
Bird during the exact same period on which the Royal Roost
programs took place, as well as a1950 show mwhich features
Parker backed by an accordionist.

This release presents all existing recordings by the quintet of tenor men Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis and Johnny Griffin with Junior
Mance at the piano. Bassist Larry Gales and drummer Ben Riley completed the rhythm section of all of these sessions (both of
whom would join the Thelonious Monk Quartet a few years later
for an extended period). The music contained here was originally
included on eight different LP’s, and two tunes from the Minton’s
sessions appear here on CD for the first time ever.
All of pianist Teddy Wilson and drummer Jo Jones studio trio
works are contained here. Included on this set are the following
original albums: For Quiet Lovers, I Got Rhythm, The Impeccable
Mr. Wilson & These Tunes Remind Me of You! . Added here as a
bonus at the end of CD3 is a strange experiment. Instead of the
usual piano/bass/drums format, it includes Benny Carter’s alto
sax in place of the bass, creating an authentic three-star line-up
with each musician enjoying an equal share of solo space.

This release compiles all of the originally issued recordings made by the classic Ahmad Jamal Trio with Israel Crosby and
Vernel Fournier between 1958 and 1962 (Crosby died on August 11, 1962 at the age of 43). Included here are the legendary club performances taped in 1958 at the Pershing Lounge, in Chicago, as well as the subsequent sets recorded at the
Spotlight, the Alhambra and the Blackhawk, plus various other sessions. This was the music that made Jamal famous. As
a bonus, nine earlier versions of tunes from our set recorded by different formations of the Jamal trio.

THE COMPLETE SESSIONS Master Takes
The splendid tenor saxophonist Tina Brooks was one of many ill-fated jazzmen. He made his
first recordings with rhythm & blues bands in 1951-52, but his recording career didn’t really
start until 1958, when he participated on Jimmy Smith’s album The Sermon. Between that year
and 1961 he would record a number of superb LPs, either as a leader or participating on other
musicians’ dates. This release presents all of the quintet studio albums he made under his own
name, in chronological order. Due to personal problems, Brooks would stop recording in early
1961 and wouldn’t be heard from again prior to his death in 1974, at the age of 42.
Included on this set are the complete classic original albums: Minor Move, True Blue, Back to
the Tracks, and The Waiting Game. Featured with Tina Brooks are such stars as Lee Morgan,
Freddie Hubbard, Johnny Coles, Jackie McLean, Kenny Drew, Duke Jordan, Paul Chambers,
Art Blakey, and Philly Joe Jones, among others.
