Teacher Spotlight

For this part of the memo I chose to cover Mr.
Ryan Kish as my teacher spotlight. Mr.Kish was
born in Maple Heights, Ohio but was raised in
Garfield Heights, Ohio. He graduated from
Garfield Heights High School. After high school
he attended Baldwin Wallace University to
pursue his dream of becoming a teacher. Mr.
Kish always knew he wanted to be a teacher
from a really young age. He also had the teacher
genes in his blood since he has 4 teachers in his
family. Mr. Kish credits becoming a teacher to
one of his own teachers that he had in high
school. Mr. Kish described him as a very cool
teacher, and in general, taught him very well.
Some things Mr. Kish enjoys doing besides
teaching is watching TV and movies. He’s big
fan of Netflix and he also enjoys reading books
(obviously). His favorite type of genre would be
fantasy because he was really into Harry Potter
from a young age. He also enjoys running on a
daily basis. Before Mr. Kish started to work as
teacher he used to work at a restaurant from the
ages of 16-22. When I asked Mr.Kish what his
favorite part about teaching was he answered “ I
think that everyday I come in I learn something
new from each class, the different types of
reactions, and each interaction from the students.
I wake up every morning and I’m excited to
come to work.”
For this edition of Teacher Spotlight, I chose to
interview Mr. Childers. He was born in
Youngstown but was raised in Poland. After
graduating from Poland Seminary High School,
he attended Youngstown State University where
he received degrees in Criminal Justice, Math
Education, and Social Studies. When asked how
has he enjoyed his time here at Campbell so far,
he said “I loves teaching and working here at
Campbell Memorial”. Outside of teaching he
plays golf, travels, and enjoys attending
concerts.

CMHS Football
What was the best moment of the season?
By: Adam Rusnak and Ariana Runyon
“Stopping Girard on the two point conversion”Jacob Mistovich
For this edition of the memo we met with
coaches and players to discuss the overall
season of the football team. Despite posting
a record of 3-7 for the 2015 season, the Red
Devil football team showed great moments
of success and have acquired some great
experience to build upon for next season.
“Kick return against LaBrae”- Yianni Koulias
“The entire season itself”- R’trell Miller
“Playing and having fun”-Darion Jones
According to the coaches, the focal point
for next season has three parts: To get
stronger and faster, develop a much better
football IQ, and do more football related
activities. The leaders this season were the
senior class, and this same formula will be
expected of next year’s seniors.
We asked several players a few questions in
regards to the season and the up and coming
2016. These were their responses.
What position did you play?

What do you need to work on for the off
season?

Majorettes

Brittani Yasechko
Trinity Thomas
By: Alona Wilkins and Trinity Thomas
One of the most unrecognizable yet key
pieces of the half time shows of our football
games are the majorettes. For this edition
of the memo we decided to take a deeper
look into these young ladies. All of the
young girls who participated this year love
music and enjoy performing in front of an
audience. This year’s majorette squad was
composed of five girls: Tia Yasechko, Jalaya
Weaver, Brittany Yasechko, Trinity Thomas,
and Jordan Schultz.
What does it take to be a majorette?
Tia: Willingness to listen and follow
directions.
Trinity: To be a majorette you have to have
determination and a good attitude.
What would you like to see happen next
year done with the majorette squad?
Jalaya: Practice, Practice, Practice.
Tia: I would like to see more people involved
in the band as a whole.
Brittani: Hard work and good listening skills
How does it feel to be a majorette?
When asked this question, the girls as a
team said that it takes a lot of time and
practice to only get 10 minutes to perform
during the half time of a football game. This
puts a lot of pressure on us and tends to be
overwhelming, but we love to perform.
Trinity: I want to see more girls trying out!
Jalaya: I want to see new uniforms
Brittani: I would like to see us compose
dances and more complicated twirls.
Off the course, the team had a lot of fun and

Soccer is a sport that is making its ways
back at Campbell Memorial High School.
We interviewed Coach John Gulu and a few
players asking some general questions
regarding the season.
S tevie Lipinski and Marc Elash
According to Coach Gulu, “this year’s team
was really good, but we do need work on
our fundamentals”. Despite a record of
2-
12, coach Gulu believes the Devils will be
more competitive next season. The key
players returning for next season are: Ian
Sewell and Jose Troncoso. According to
Coach Gulu, “they are our best players and
they both know how to lead, which will be a
key to our success next season”.
We asked a few members of the team what
they believed was the highlight of the season
in their opinion, and this was what they had
to say:
Ian Sewell- “Just practicing with the team
and traveling to different places to play the
game I love.”
Jose Troncoso- “Playing on the field with
my friends and being a leader.”
Tristan Kendall- “I liked how we all were
like a family and even though we didn’t
have the best team we always kept our heads
up.”

HPAC Field Trip
By: DaJuan Will
HPAC stands for Health Profession
Affinity Community. Our students
participate in this field trip twice per month.
They visit Youngstown State University and
Northeast Ohio Medical University (they
will attend NEOMED twice this year). The
purpose of the field trip to Youngstown
State University is to expose students to
different professions in the health field. The
trips to NEOMED are to present our
findings to other schools. Students in grades
9-12 make up the HPAC group along with
Mrs. Joss and Ms. Latell.

Art Field Trip
By: Iyana Parker
On September 25th four students
from Campbell Memorial High
school participated in the YSU
non- violence poster competition.
The participants were to express
their best vision of non-violence.
Haley Figueroa, Lela Kamal, Zack Jarrell, and Celina Cruz
posed with their works of art.
When asked what they thought about
doing so well in the competition, all
of the participants were simply proud
of themselves.
Our Campbell students took the top
3 places. (Zach Jarrell 1st , Haley
Figueroa 2nd , Celina Cruz 3rd, and
Leila Kamal who’s in the 8th grade
took 2nd ) .

It is truly amazing how art work is so
expressive. Our students took simple
forms of art, but they have such
symbolic meanings and can be
interpreted in so many ways. Violence
takes on so many forms in today’s
society and I believe that our students
did a wonderful job representing their
families and the Campbell community
in expressing the importance of nonviolence.

Choir Field Trip to YSU
By: Vivian Kelly
This year’s choir group is directed by Mr.
Timothy Borham. He is a new teacher here at
Campbell Memorial but has received a lot
interest from his students. On October 14th of
this year the Memorial High School choir visited
the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State
University.
Choir members posing outside the Dona School of Music.
This was a great experience for our students to
get out of their normal surroundings and be a
part of something that they are truly interested
in. “Meeting students who share in the same
interests as you was a very positive factor of
this experience”, says senior Taylor Valerio. As a
class the students learned that it really is
possible to do what you love make a decent
living at it. Taylor’s favorite part of this field trip
was getting to the see the many different artists
perform. From this experience, Milasia Lewis
learned that we all have the power to use our
gifts to express oneself and influence others.

choir.
During their time at Youngstown State
University the students participated in a couple

CHMS Bonfire
By: Tyriece Thomas & Ja’Laya Weaver
On October 22nd the Memorial High School
students, staff, and community members
joined for the annual bonfire before the
CMHS vs Struthers football game.
The senior class officers were able to get
excused from class during the day to begin
making the fire pit for the festivities that
took place later that evening. The students
drove around the community picking up
pallets, old furniture, and anything else that
could be burned.

The bonfire took place at 7pm in the back
parking lot on Sanderson Ave. The Campbell
community once again showed up for a
great night of fun in a family atmosphere.

this year’s homecoming dance?
By: Darius Gandy, Briana Robinson, and
Jenae Johnson
Laz Lebron – Fun
This year’s homecoming weekend was
kicked off to a great start with a community
parade, football, and the announcing of
another homecoming queen at Campbell
Memorial High School.
Kayla Gulu – Hype!!
Paul Tropea - Amazing
What in your opinion was the best
part/moment of Homecoming?
Zion Williams – Taking pictures in the photo

Aaniyah Hakeem – Being with my friends!
Kalliope Zembillas, Nomiki Tsagaris, Catherine Donald,
Courtney M ichaels, and Devina Cruz.
On Saturday October 24th the students all
gathered at the E&M Building for the annual
Homecoming dance. This year’s theme was
“A Night Under the Sea”. This dance was
sponsored by the Class of 2018; class
advisors Mrs. Rauber and Ms. Schmid. The
dance promptly began at 7pm and lasted
until 10pm. The students were given a live

Bomb Threat
By: Ana Denas
On October 23rd shock waves were sent
through the Campbell community when a
bomb threat was called into high school at
11:41 am. Mr. Yeager came over the P.A.
system and asked everyone to evacuate the
building. All students and staff quickly left
the building and gathered at the visitors
section of the football stadium. All students
assumed that this was a regular drill that we
partake in just in case the threat was ever
real. The student body wasn’t made aware
that this was a real threat until Ms. Hampton
came to address us after about an hour into
the drill. When asked about how they felt
when they were told that this was a real
threat, most of the student body felt scared,
frightened, and took these drills a lot more
seriously.
When asked how they thought the
administration handled the bomb threat, they
unanimously said they felt that our
principlas handled the situation to the best of
their ability to make sure we all were safe.
Ms. Hampton and Mr. Yeager rewarded the
student body with a free dress down later
that week because of how well we
cooperated with their directions that day.
Homecoming activities that evening went on
as scheduled, but parents and students were
advised to arrive early for the football game.
Campbell Police and concerned citizens .
Students sitting in the visitors’ bleachers during bomb threat.
The Youngstown Bomb Squad was called
out and three canines were brought in to
search the building. Nothing was found.
After an “all call” was made to parents, the
students were released from the school in an
orderly fashion.
It is unfortunate that these threats take place
because they take away from students
learning and cause a lot of disruption for a
lot of people. To prevent these threats from
happening, a severe punishment should be
placed upon these individuals.
Senior Words of Advice
By: Ariana Runyon
I interviewed ten seniors who were willing to
provide advice that could possibly help the
under classmen students in preparation for
their remaining high school years.
