girls denim
You can’t be cool going Back-to-School without the perfect pair of jeans. Denim is the quintessential fabric for kids from age 0 into adult hood. Denim provides a great way to express oneself
through color, leg opening, pocket design and fun n’funk.
Following in their big sisters footsteps, two must-have fall trends that fit with any style of jean is
a Dark Rinse and Pocket Treatments. An intense dark rinse gives a dressier, polished look to any
denim while the unique pocket treatments add detailed style through bold stitching, embellishments and altered pocket shapes. Embellishments should be kept to a minimum. Think light
colored stitching, minimal flowers or young designs.
Skinny Jeans have gone from fad to fashion mainstay with fits that flatter a variety of body
shapes. What makes skinnies skinny? Most skinny jeans have a 12 inch (round) opening at the
feet, but super skinnies can have an opening as small as 8 inches (will vary in children’s sizes).
To add a little skinny variety, try skinny jeans with zipped cuffs. Zippers are a hot addition to
skinny jeans this season, giving them a tougher edge.
Flare Jeans are a staple to the wardrobe, but shouldn’t be confused with Wide Legged jeans.
The typical leg opening is 16 inches round. Fitting closely through the hip and thigh, they flare
out from the knee down. For a bohemian or hippie chic look, match these jeans with a fringed
bag and moccasins.
Also known as relaxed fit jeans, Boyfriend Jeans, are perfect for a casual day around town or
hanging in the house. To keep this slouchy style from looking too sloppy, accessorize with a belt
and a girly top. Boyfriend jeans should be rolled at the cuff, ultimately giving them a comfortable cute look, in that I’m-not-really-trying way!
For the freshest look for fall, try a pair of Cropped or Cuffed jeans. To find the right fit,
Cropped or Cuffed Jeans should hit about 3 inches above the ankles. Wear with ballet flats or to
winterize, wear with tall, slouchy boots.
Bleached and Colored Jeans are 80’s inspired jeans that can be integrated into your eclectic mix
of rock tees, hoodies and cardigans. Go for a bright jewel toned pair or standout in animal prints.
This style tends to stick towards the skinny leg, being that it is more fitted and fashion forward.
For a more muted color, but just as bold of a fashion statement, choose a bleached (reminiscent of
tie dye) out grey or khaki denim, considered this fall’s favorite fashion trend.
Denim or Colored Leggings feel like sweat pants, but fit like second skin. They are a great look
when paired with a bohemian print tunic or a tie-dyed baby doll sweater. Leggings come in a
variety of bold colors and prints.
Considered a popular fixture in the grunge look of the 1990s, Destructed Denim, has resurfaced
with a lot less grunge. Look for distressed and destructed jeans: ripped but not showing too much
skin. For a more moderate version of this trend, look for gently worn jeans with frayed edges.
Just make sure that the fraying does not go far above the bottom hemline.

boys pants
For boys, styles do not change all too often. To be on the safe side, sway towards selecting the
basics.
The most common cut for boys is still the Boot Cut. This style is slightly fitted through the
thigh, with a slight flare from the knee down. In terms of the word flare, use that loosely. A boys
flare just means that they fit over the top of the shoe.
Similar cut to the Boot, the Loose Fit uses more material in their cut. These jeans are full
through the thigh and continue straight down to the leg opening. Similar to the Cargo Fit of the
past, these jeans do not have all the extra ties and pockets.
The Cargo Pant fits low on the waist and are a loose fit overall. They are longer so they bunch at
the ankle and have multiple flap pockets on them. A hot new trend is to add embellishments such
as patches to your cargo pants!
For the edgier dude, stores are also starting to carry the Slim Fit or Skinny Jean. Be careful
with this style as it is not a mainstream trend for boys yet.
Denim Dictionary:
Dark Rinse: Dark shade of indigo blue
Destructed: New denim, made to look old and worn in
Contrast Stitch: A light colored thread made to stand out on dark denim
Whiskers: Light colored streaking found on the front of denim surrounding pocket areas and on
the backside of the knee- they are processed into the denim with bleach creating a wrinkle effect.
Created to make the denim look “worn in.”
Do Not Buy:

dresses and skirts
Dresses continue to be an “it” piece in every young gal’s closet. Dresses can be difficult to buy though, as you do not want them to appear too “young” for the wearer. To
ensure that you are buying the correct styles, make sure that you are regularly visiting
the mall.
Drop Waist dresses are similar to a tunic (long length shirt). The difference lies at the
bottom hem where there is ruffled embellishment. The ruffle will generally begin below
the buttocks to hit mid thigh to the knee. The drop waists that are gracing the racks are
either straight styles or embellished with a skinny fabric belt. This style is seen in all
stores featuring various colors and patterns. The drop waist dress looks great with a
perfect pair of leggings and Mary Jane shoes.
Babydoll dresses continue to rock the runway in back to school fashion shows everywhere. The dress is fitted through the sleeve and chest directly below it flares to create
a loose, flowy fit.
The Sweater Dress continues to be popular again this season. The sweater dress is a
lengthier version (above the knee) of a regular sweater in knit or crocheted patterns. To
create the perfect look, match the sweater dress with a pair of patterned leggings and
boots.
Tiered dresses are a fabulous dressy way to make a fashion statement. Fitted through
the chest, the tiered dress is slim fit, with layer upon layer of fabric overlay. This
creates more of a full look to the skirt of the dress. Perfect for fall/winter is to add a
fashion forward vest, cardigan or sweater.
Jewel-Toned Shades are the color scheme for fall dresses. Jewel tones consist of
sapphire blue, mustard yellows and deeper cranberry reds. Solid or used in a varied
color configuration, jewel tones make a dramatic statement. To accessorize, add a
skinny belt for an added pop of color.
When it comes to skirts, think “school girl.” The must have skirts are almost reminiscent of a uniform, but punched up with bold shades of color and pops of lurex
(metallic) threading. Denim or Plaid, Pleated or Straight – any mix or match of these
hot trends will create great fall fashion. Look for hemlines primarily at mid-thigh,
perfectly complimenting a pair of knee high socks.

tops
This season’s sweater trends include the argyle sweater and cardigan. Argyle is a diamond
shaped pattern, that consists of at least two colors. The geek chic argyle sweater is hip for both
boys and girls featuring this season’s popular color combinations of olive and gray, and fuschia
and navy. For a different argyle flare, go with a vest- perfect for dress up or down.
The grandfather cardigan continues to be a staple to any Tween girl’s wardrobe. This cardigan
holds a longer length (from shoulder to mid-hip or below) and has at least 5 buttons starting
under the classic v-neck. The cardigan is a perfect piece for layering with school uniforms during
the week or trendy graphic tees for a night at the movies.
Printed Hoodies and Zippies are oh-so-cool for boys and girls alike. Vintage (worn in effect)
inspired track jackets, hoodies and zippies (hoodies with full front zippers) are popping up just in
time for Back to School. The most popular styles have brand logos, sports emblems, or
scenery/art.
Funnel Neck Henleys are a style that is popping onto the fashion radar everywhere. The Henley
from last year (crewneck, with buttons) is updated with a higher neck- almost mock or turtle
style, but zipped or buttoned to really get the cool factor in effect.
Horizontal Stripes look great on everything casual or dressy this fall – thin, thick or varied.
Look for stripes on sweaters, knee high socks, hoodies, polos and vests.
Babydoll Tops (flowy from under the bustline) create a sweet look for any Tween girl. This
season’s babydoll comes in a wide variety: long sleeve, short sleeve or sleeveless layered, all
with a longer length that is definitely kid-friendly and mom-approved.
Tunics are a hot trend for both cute shirts and dresses. They come in various lengths reaching
from the shoulders to somewhere between the hips and the ankles. A great comfy fit for any
season.
Under your favorite top, add a perfect Tank. Too cool for wearing alone in the fall, a sweet floral
print or super solid will satisfy any warmth need. For a delicate touch, a bit of lace around the
top and bottom add a pop of perfection.
Wrangle in wild, western style with a plaid button down shirt. The western plaid shirts come in
a variety of colors and feature mother of pearl snap buttons. Updated from styles of the past,
manufacturers are adding in tattoo style printing on the chest or upper back for a punk effect.
Bring out your inner cowboy or girl by saddling up the western plaid with your favorite denim
and boots.
One of the hottest looks for boys this year is the “casual cool look.” The key to achieving this
easy-going appearance is to choose items that have a vintage feel and layering them. When
creating his layers, it's okay to pair patterns like plaids and stripes with graphic images - just pick
up a dominating color in the graphic print and echo it in the pattern. Wear it with confidence and
it will look hip and casual.

tees
Girls tees come in a variety of prints to personalize any Tween's style. Prints illustrating delicate flowers, animals, peace signs, tattoo prints, and messages such as “I
Still Dream” make the perfect statement tee. Tees using plastic diamonds (glued on –
no grommets), tie-dye or batik (vintage appearance) treatments are all the rage. The
bolder, the better.
Vintage inspired graphic tees are everywhere right now so you should have no
trouble finding one your boy digs. Tees featuring tattoo inspired graphics or vintage
rock concert reproductions are the most in-demand boy’s tees this year. Other popular
inspired tees include sports graphic images, cartoon figures such as the Transformers,
brand logos. Some tees have a pre-worn look to them while others employ 70’s and
80’s retro colors and designs.
2-in-1 Tees are favorites for both girls and boys. Boys love to layer their tattoo
inspired graphic tees over a Henley. Girls tees layered under spaghetti strap tanks
give a versatile layered look to any outfit. Most of the two in one tees give the
appearance that they are layered looks, however, the long sleeve is sewn directly onto
the short sleeve itself. What a bargain looks like 2 for the low price of 1!

outerwear
Fall into the layering trend with a Puffy Vest or Jacket. Vests layered with a graphic tee and
hoodie are a trend warm enough for both girls and boys. The puffy jacket consists of either
cotton batting for the lining or can go as far as using feathers for the utmost is hot, hot, hot!
The style is voluminous through the bodice and fitted at the waist and sleeves so that no cold
weather can sneak through. To make them girly, faux fur around the sleeves, collar, or hood
add a delicately sweet touch. To make them growl, leopard or zebra prints are perfect animal
prints for any tween.
Jean Jackets continue to be a staple in closets across North America. Jazz up your jean jacket
with small embellishments and patches!
Peacoats continue to be a popular style in the closets of the Tweeners, as they play the perfect
role of the dressier winter jacket. The traditional peacoats are double breasted and oh so
stylish. For girls, they are usually cut so that they are more fitted to the bodice, many times
having detailing just below the natural bustline.
Bombers are all the rage this season- Whether it is leather or pleather - this is a must own.
The basic shell of the bomber is very similar to that of the puffy jacket, it just does not have
the “puff” per se. Fall bomber styles are typically light weight materials with zippers, in
winter, the addition of warmer materials and toggle closures.
For Boys, you will continue to see Snowboarder Jackets in lightweight warmth materials
that hit the mid hip, down to the mid thigh in length. Plaid in warm fall colors is the rage!
The layered Military Coat is a salute to winter fashion. Layered with terry (sweatshirt)
material underneath and canvas on top, this coat is made unique with extra pockets for
storage.

shoes
Sneakers aka Sneaks are the rage for Boys and Girls alike. One of the top three most
wanted items amongst Tweens to Teens, sneakers are one of the best ways to show your
individualism. Think big emblems, bold colors and patterns.
Boots for the girls are still a big look for fall. Flat, slouchy boots in leather or suedes are
perfect with a pair of casual jeans or “dressed” up with leggings.
Ballet Flats continue to dance onto the scene. Shown in leather or canvas, this is the perfect
edition to any casual or dressy outfit.
