INTRODUCTION
British music firmly punches above its weight
on the global stage. British artists accounted
for one in seven (13.7%) artist albums sold in
the US recorded music market in 2012, the
highest share on record, and four out of the top
five selling albums stateside were from British
artists. The continued success of British music
internationally highlights not only the strength
and depth of British talent, but also the skill
and investment by British record and publishing
companies in developing, marketing and
promoting British music overseas.
Nine years ago, BPI & UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) started putting together
a trade mission for independent UK music companies to come to Los Angeles,
to develop what was then a relatively new area for small and medium sized
independents; namely sync licensing. This partnership was further strengthened
by the addition of the Music Publishers Association (MPA), thereby recognising
the vitally important role of the music publisher in the syncing process. Today, our
delegate companies come from all parts of the music business and regularly return
to the UK with not only a significantly enhanced knowledge of the whole market,
but also a whole new address book of contacts and, not infrequently, even a deal
or two.
Once again, we thank all our delegates, presenters and organisers, in both the UK
and the USA. The mission runs on the good will and generous participation of all
these individuals. For the delegates themselves, I hope that this mission generates
as much success as its predecessors have and that we continue to deliver great UK
music into the world’s largest and most exciting music and entertainment market.
