Saving
Everest:
Beyond the Death Zone

The garbage collection process
at the altitude is as arduous as one
expects. Due to thin air and harsh
conditions, the climbers carried
30-40 kg each at one go, and had
to make several trips back and
forth. During the clean up task,
which commenced back in 2010,
the team brought down 1.8 tons
of garbage – oxygen tanks, tent
equipment, sneakers, plastics, bottles, gas canisters, ropes, etc along
with two dead bodies.
Sophia Pande, a filmmaker
(with an MFA from NYU), saw
the project as a genuinely significant subject, hence a documentary was born. She teamed up with
Marina Martins, a Portuguese director from LA. Marina took the
opportunity and came to Nepal
with the equipment: harnesses, a
high definition camera and GoPro cameras (HD extreme sport
cameras). These small, light
weight gadgets were attached to
the climbers themselves and after
30 days of bone shattering work,
the team generated 33 hours
of footage. This footage in turn
brings us the feature length documentary under the production
and team work of the duo. ‘The
Death Zone’ premieres May 4 at
QFX Central, Civil Mall. !

ing Site’. The task: an
extraordinarily dangerous feat.
Namgyal Sherpa, an avid climber, along with a team of 21 very
skilled and driven Nepali climbers and 10 support crew members, coordinated by Chakra
Karki, were to carry out the
first cleaning effort on the Everest summit - ‘The Death Zone,’
above 26,000 feet (8,000m). The
project was called - Extreme
Everest Expedition (EEE 2010).
The project came about when
Namgyal Sherpa, during his
many expeditions encountered
the horrific scene of mounting
abandoned garbage. The cause
was noble and well over due, but
the initial hurdle to overcome was
generating the funds required
(USD 100,000). The process began with the project being presented to the right people – the
donors. Corporate sponsors like
Nepal Investment Bank, Hulas
Steel, North Face and Surya Nepal came together and the project
was launched. The donors enthusiastically supported the venture,
which led to the collection of
seven million rupees.

whites. So I would keep my
summer wardrobe fresh with
crisp cottons and linens since
they are the perfect fabric for
the season. I would choose
clean lines and soft, flowing
silhouettes.
My summer wardrobe is
going to be simple with
a lot of denims, tees and
shorts.

I’m actually confused what to get for
this season due to the unpredictable
weather but I guess mostly white

I will have a lot of cotton fabrics, one
piece dresses, maxi dresses, flip flops,
and huge and elaborate hang bags.
Also I will have clothes made out
of Nepali materials like Dhaka and
Khadi.
Let’s see, I shall be updating
my wardrobe this summer
with skirts that have funky
floral prints, chiffon and cotton
dresses. I guess white trousers
and simple tank tops can’t be
ignored. Hmm… also let’s not
forget good old pair of jeans,
wedge heels and flats.

Ke Chha Kailash? Kailash Quotes
F
inally it was dusk and the year was coming to an end. Everything seemed regular on the streets. Vehicles plied on the
road and people rushed around with errands while there was
a great deal of hustle at the Soaltee Crowne Plaza. Capping
off a beautiful chilly evening, the packed China Garden swooned to
the Sufi-inspired music of the Indian phenomenon known as Kailash
Kher – and his band Kailasha. The after-rain weather – not too cold
yet breezy – complemented the soothing melody perfectly.
It took an hour of the audience’s patience but after the grand success
of Bryan Adams, everyone anticipated Kher’s concert to also be worth
the wait. And Kher did not fail to live up to his fans’ expectations.
The show opened with the bass-driven seductive song ‘Jaana Jogi
De Naal’ followed by hits from his discography including ‘Tauba
Tauba,’ ‘ Rang Deeni,’ ‘Teri Deewani,’ ‘Allah Ke Bande,’ and ‘Saiyyan.’
The highlight of the evening was when Kher performed the hit Nepali number ‘Kanchi he Kanchi’ to a surprised Nepali audience. “I
would like to call Kathmandu Rockmandu,” he commented. Yet that
was not it. As the Indian performer asked the audience, “Tapai lai
kasto chei?” he transcended the language barrier.
“When I sing live, I want to connect directly to the audience. I
want them to feel my presence in their flesh and bones,” shared the
Sufi king. With his blend of soft Sufi numbers and fast beat tracks,
Kher assorted a sense of ecstasy and carefree mystic in the nerves
of the audience.
The best part was, with every new song, the singer shared his
experience of his Nepal visit, “This is the place of the Himalayas,
the abode of Lord Shiva. Nepal is blessed by the Gods.”
As they say all good things must come to an end, Kher concluded
the evening with ‘Chak de Phatte.’ The energy was amazing and the
night memorable. Abhaya and the Steam Injuns took over the show
after Kher said his goodbyes.
Had the space been larger, a greater audience could have been accommodated. But too bad, the seating was limited. Then again, JPR
is promising more this New Year, so let’s wait and watch what more

I met Kailash Kher under circumstances. As
soon as I got a call from JPR, I rushed my
way to Soaltee. After waiting for quite some
time, the soulful melody King came dressed
in casuals, washed jeans and a green
jumper. With a bright smile and down to
earth attitude, he welcomed the reporters.
Excerpts of the conversation follow:
What is music to you (most obvious question)?
Music to me is a way of living and if you live in a way
your conscious self tells you, ‘Yes I have done something,’ when the entire world looks at you and gives
you a respectful smile, when you command respect,
it means you are living a life somewhat meaningful
to society and humanity. I think through music you
realize that because it is an expression of your inner
emotions – your feelings – these are all beyond
barriers of religion and gender. So music is definitely
another form of God to me.
How have you matured as a person?
I don’t know if I have matured yet, but each concert
and each song is an experience for me. As a person,
everything educates me more about life. More than
a good singer I want to be a good person. I think
singing is an art which reflects your personality; if
you are not a good soul, you can’t portray wellness
in your songs. So for me, every journey is an experience to be a good human being.
You have usually mentioned you father (Pt.
Mehar Singh Kher) as your inspiration. Can
you tell us a little more about your musical
background?
My father actually was the inspiration; I admired him
first as an individual then as my father. Although he
was not much of an educated person, he could still
win the hearts of millions and grab the attention of
many with sensible, great talks and deeds. Another
thing that made me admire him was that he was not
a trained singer. Whenever I heard him sing, I learnt
what he recited.
You have always been considered as a Pop Sufi
singer. What other genres would you want to
sing?
I don’t even know what I sing; it’s all up to people
what they feel like calling it. More than the term, I believe in soul, anything you do with genuine expression
is divine to me – whether you call it pop or rock.
What would you have been if you were not a
singer?
If I were not a singer, I would not be here because that
is what my motive is.When I left Delhi for Mumbai, I
told myself that if I could not be a singer, I would not
do anything and just dive into the ocean (laughs). I’m
sure God heard my inner feelings and granted my wish
as He did not want me to go to heaven and nag him.
Do you think luck plays factor? Have you
been lucky?
Yes luck plays a big part. I think I have been
very lucky. I believe destiny plays a big role and
destiny is formed through your deeds. It’s like
instant karma. When you do good to others, you
will have good luck.
How do you define yourself?
I don’t define myself yet. I’m still searching.
Is it the same feeling when you sing for movies and when you are doing a single?
When I’m recording for other music directors, I’m
singing their expressions. When I compose my music
with my band Kailasha, it’s my free expression; I’m
not bound by situations. There are situations though.
You have judged so many reality shows. Do
you think reality shows provide a good platform for upcoming singers?
It helps also but at times, it’s not beneficial. Sometimes even the law allows certain amount of drugs
to be prescribed but I guess it’s the limit that is
important.
For the audience:
I want to tell the audience that social problems are
everywhere but harmony and peace is what binds
the entire humanity. We should live in love because
we humans are the only species that have intelligence and a sensible mind. We need to use that for
betterment of the world. (Mannat Shrestha)

The drama is about Amelia, the proprietor of the Sad Café, who
throws her new husband out of her bedroom on their wedding night. Torn
between anger and desire, the husband finally leaves town only to return
some years later to find Amelia showering all her affection on a dwarf
cousin who has come to live with her. At their first meeting, the dwarf is
hopelessly attracted to the husband. In turn, the husband moves back into
the Sad Café, threatening to run away with the dwarf if Amelia objects. The
day of reckoning soon arrives and the husband and wife meet to settle
their differences with their bare hands.
Besides the director and co-director themselves, the cast includes Kriti
Pokhrel as Amelia Evans, Arpan Khanal as Marvin Macy and Shirish Pokharel
as Cousin Lymon.

Yes! More Drama!
Sentiments and romance are part of life – they touch your soul,
inspire you, bring out expressions, and relate with every human
emotion dramatic.That is why dramas are interesting. Life’s a ballad,
sometimes the tune is melodious and at others it is melancholic, but
that’s the beauty of life – it is not perfect, therefore it is beautiful.
Bishal Karki, co-director of ‘The Ballad Of the Sad Café’ shares his say
on what his piece of art has in store for all those viewers who intend
to attend the screening on 22 April.
What does the drama try to tell? Can we expect more than just
an entertainment?
‘The Ballad of the Sad Café’ is a haunting tale of a human triangle that
culminates into an astonishing brawl; the drama introduces the audience to
Miss Amelia, a formidable southern woman whose café serves as the town’s
gathering place. It is a story about how Amelia falls in love, about how her
café came into being and about vengeance due to which the café died.
The audience will be in for an emotional roller coaster. There’s not much I
want to give away, you’d rather want to be at the screening of ‘The Ballad’
on 22 April at Donnelly Hall, St. Xavier’s School.
What kind of an audience do you expect to pull?
This drama presents a plot to excite a mature audience. Anyone who is
willing to reflect on what they will be watching will have a plenty of food for
thought and will definitely be enthralled by it.
Kathmandu College of Management (KCM) and the KCM Student Council
screen the KCM Annual Drama to provide students with an opportunity to
showcase their talents and also to get away from the hectic schedule that
the curriculum entails.
What unexpected can we expect?
Like I already mentioned, this is a drama where you can expect a lot of
sudden highs and lows. It has the element of love to make the heart melt,
hatred to make the blood boil and sorrow to make the soul weep.

Nepal is organizing a fund raiser
‘Kathmandu Nagarik Challenge’
(KNC) with the mission to
build a school in a remote part
of Dolakha. The 32 km rally
starts from Jawalakhel football
ground and leads through
Chapagaun, Tika Bhairab, Champi,
Bhainsepati, Nakkhu and finishes
at the Jawalakhel football ground.
Proceeds will go for the education
of disadvantaged Nepali children,

Project Sarangi
Directed by renowned theatre director
M. K. Raina and presented by Nepal
Shakes and India’s National School
of Drama (NSD), this play is the
culmination of a month-long intensive
theatre-training workshop which
brought together 30 Nepali students
and teaching faculty from NSD. The
play written by Dharamvir Bharati,
and performed in Nepali, is set in the
last day of the Great Mahabharata war
when the rules of war broke down and
the Brahmastra, the ultimate weapon of
destruction, akin to today’s weapons of
mass destruction, was unleashed. The
play explores fundamental precepts of
ethics and morality in times of conflict,
but reveals that there is a capacity for
reconciliation and forgiveness in all
human interactions.
With the objective of promoting
young and talented urban Sarangi
musicians, Project Sarangi attempts
to share the responsibility of all
Nepalis to save the art form and
keep it for future generations.
Having witnessed the decline in
the number of musicians taking up
Sarangi – our supposedly national
instrument, and fearing the threat
of extinction of the Nepali form of
Sarangi, Kaal Bhairav Initiatives has
decided to promote the instrument
in a way that it is fashionable,
whereby it would create a market
of its own. French director Tony
Gatlif will be screening a musical
documentary ‘Lotcha Drom’ at
the event. Besides, there will be
the launch of project Sarangi and
fund raising for ten sarangis for the
students.

Who are the intended people for the event?
We are expecting approximately more than one hundred thousand
people for the Maha Satsang event at Tundikhel as it is open for all. We are
expecting people from all spheres, age groups, cultures and professions.
Anyone with the desire to maintain harmony with oneself and hence also in
the society can take part in the Maha Satsang. This is a one day preliminary
event. Those who find our techniques beneficial can opt for other elaborate
Art of Living courses.
What are the highlights of the event?
H.H. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar ji will be in the Satsang, so there will be some
question and answer sessions, bhajans, meditation, Nepali folk and cultural
dances to uplift the cultural values of Nepal. The motive of his visit is to
establish peace and harmonious environment in the country.
Is the Maha Satsang a spiritual event or a religious one?
There’s a difference between religion and spirituality. Religion is about
customs and rituals which people follow without knowledge and value. On
the other hand spirituality means connection with the spirit or self. Only
spirituality can nourish human values, bring in social change and a sense of
responsibility. So Maha Satsang – meaning a great gathering of like-minded

Welcoming the New Year
GO RED FOR WOMEN
ASMAN (Association of St. Mary’s
Alumnae Nepal), in collaboration with
Jayanti Memorial Trust, organized “Go Red
for Women” to raise fund and awareness
about the risks of heart diseases in women
on 13 April 2011, at Hotel De l’Annapurna.
Renowned cardiologists, Dr. Bhagwan
Koirala and Dr. Bharat Rawat, along with
Miss Nepal 2010 Sadichha Shrestha were
the Goodwill Ambassadors who shared
the support for the cause by launching the
“Healthy Heart Awareness Wrist Band.”
The awareness program was inaugurated by
Neelima Shrestha followed by a welcome
note from Ava Shah, the President of ASMAN and Shreejana Rana, the Vice President of ASMAN and
Secretary of Jayanti Memorial Trust, both conveying solidarity for this international movement.
The program had Dr. Bharat Rawat making a presentation on “Healthy Heart”.The program also saw the St.
Mary’s School (SMS) Achievers being awarded and a musical performance by Hari Mohan, an Indian singer.
The fund raised by the guest tickets, priced at Rs. 2500, and the wrist bands which sold for Rs. 200 each,
was an attempt to raise awareness on heart diseases and to support people in need. The 1985 batch of
SMS handed over an amount of Rs. 50000 to sponsor the education of 12 girls at Mary Ward School.

Talking Paubha
The Indian Cultural Center organized a talk on ‘Manifestations of Devi: A Program on Newar Paubha
Painting’ by Deepak Joshi on 15 April. Joshi, who started painting at an early age of 10 said that unlike
Thanka paintings, Paubha still lacked behind. He said that the paintings are concentrated within a few
Newar communities, “but new generations too have reckoned its importance and thus have started
painting those.”
Paubha, comprising of two words ‘Pau’ and ‘Bha,’ means depiction of god in flat form. “However,
Paubha and Pauva are different in the the message they convey,” Joshi shared. “Paubha implies
message from Buddha, while Pauva means message from monastery.”
Although Joshi dwelt much into history, legends, myths and folklores, he conveyed little about the
talk’s topic, manifestations of Devi. The earliest of Paubha paintings date back to 13th century, the
Araniko era, Joshi said. “Unlike present day paubhas that use chemical colors, those paintings survived
because those used stone colors,” Joshi informed. Joshi, who trained under Paubha master Prem
Man Chitrakar said, “There are no schools or curricula that teach these paintings, and it’s high time
someone did that.”
He also stated that, “concerned authorities should pay attention to promote it.” (Pratik Rimal)
Moksh Music Festival ‘11
It was pouring at the Moksh restaurant on
12 April. But that couldn’t dampen the BMX
bikers’ spirit. The bicycle stunt show was
in full swing with cheers from an audience
taking shelter in the beautiful verandas of the
restaurant. The aromatic BBQ and soothing
greenery at Moksh proved to be the right
ambience for the classical dance performance

at the Moksh auditorium. This was followed
by a thumping DJ session, and the Moksh
Music Festival ’11 was wrapped up with

‘Too Much Profit’

n 5 April a major daily
had a headline stood
out. It said ‘Niji chetra
badhi nafamukhi’ or ‘Private sector too profit oriented’.
These words of wisdom belonged to the Right Honourable
Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal. He was speaking at a function where he invited private
sector involvement in bikas nirman (development) but was also
suggesting that their profit motive was preventing them from
lending a hand.
Khanal’s remark was flummoxing, to say the least. In
particular, what message was
he giving to trade unions – including the one that he leads
as president of the Unified
Marxists-Leninists? The message could not have also come at
a worse time, or just after three
large unions had finished negotiating for higher wages, while
there were still some – aligned
to minor political parties – that
were still demanding for more,
and had stopped production to
press their demands.
If industry is to contribute to
bikas nirman (and also to political
slush funds), it needs to be able
to run in the first place. And,
whatever industry may contrib-
ute comes not from losses – or
the pockets of the investors –
but from the profits it can make.
Therefore even ‘too much profit’
is not the problem. The issue is
the capability of government
to tap into the profits in a manner that is judicious, transparent
and predictable.
What one cannot be sure
about, however, is how well this
money is actually being spent
given all the media reports
about former prime ministers
and home ministers getting

The second half unraveled it all, Utd
went a goal behind, then Scholes
got red carded, Carrick who was
so good during the QF of the CL
was not able to do much. All in all,
City midfield were the stronger,
and being a goal up, they went into
an all out attacking play preventing
Utd from staging any chances of a
comeback.
There were 5 PL games played on
Saturday; Chelsea overcame their
initial shock of being 1 goal down
to winning 3-1. Torres is still searching for that elusive first goal; he
DID score but was deemed offside.

They have six more games. The
jokes being cracked at his expense
on the web and papers are not
helping his confidence much. My
favorite one is: Torres walked into a

you.” Saturday was very much the

came Wigan and in went Blackpool for the very first time this

and they should be safe. Sunderland
too is going down. Bruce’s boys

February! Not something to be

just 5 points off safety. Everton are
finally getting on in their season,
they now are seventh after their
2-0 win over Blackburn. Everton
boasts of a modest squad, and in
spite of that Moyes seems to work
wonders with them every season.
No wonder he is touted to succeed SAF when he retires. Aston
Villa came well against West Ham;
last minute winner by Abgonlahor
gave them the vital 3 points and
guaranteed safety unless they suffer
a meltdown in the next five games.
West Ham unfortunately are still
struggling; they need a small miracle
to stay up. At the look of things,
the relegation battle is poised at a
knife edge, just 5 points separate
the five clubs at the bottom. With
five more games, six for bottom
placed Wolves, expect a roller
coaster ride the coming weeks.
Super Sunday showdown at the
Emirates, Arsenal hosted Liverpool.

Arsenal bossed the game throughout, but could not find the back of

last minute of injury time, Liverpool

whose two match ban proved
expensive for SAF, who himself is
still on his five match ban. He will
be back in the dugout when United
meet Arsenal for the probable
title showdown at the Emirates on
1 May. This week’s result for the
Spurs will go a long way in proving
if they will be still up for the chance
to play CL football next season.
They have a tougher draw than
City, the decider is at away to City,
and they need to play Chelsea,
Liverpool and Arsenal. Wednesday
night will be their first trial by fire;
they welcome Arsenal to a late kick
off on Wednesday night and meet
Chelsea 10 days hence. City on
the other hand have comparatively
easier away games, toughest being
away to Everton, they have Blackburn on Monday night kick off, then
welcome West Ham Sunday, 1 May.
A short recap of El Classico which
returned last Saturday night: it was
a first for both the top scorers of
La Liga; the game ended in a 1-1 PG
for Messi and Ronaldo. It was the
first time Leo scored against a team
managed by Mourinho and the first
goal for Ronaldo against Barca ever.
They have yet to meet another
three times in the course of the
next two and a half weeks. The
last time they met four times was
over a period of 21 days in the year
1916. It will be a battle between
the master tactician Mourinho over
his counterpart Guardiola’s passing
game. The winner will take the
King’s cup and be a step closer to
the Holy Grail of European football
– the Champions League trophy.
The La Liga is Barca’s, who are 8
points ahead with six more games
to go. So many matches to watch,
so little time. The last month of the
season is always the most exciting.

or will Utd be crowned champions

Fromance- The Facebook Romance

We all do it, don’t we? Romance
with our Facebook accounts? But
today, my hint was rather towards
the ‘Romance’ that is prevalent
among FB users – an inter FB accounts romance if you will.
So the last time I posted a profile
picture with a guy friend of mine,
more than a hundred likes and a
dozen comments jammed my notifications. For almost a week after
that, everywhere I walked in – into
my office, to parties, I was swamped
with comments such as “Congratulations” and “Who is that guy?”
Wow! I had no idea bringing a guy
into the picture, really my Facebook picture but evidently into
my life, was making such a grand
statement.
And so, just like that, I believe I
accidently had me starring in one
of the many “Facebook Romances”
that exists out there. So what are
the features of this Fromance?
Read on to find out.
You know you’re caught up in a
Fromance when...
lThe obvious one – If your profile
info reads “in a relationship with so
and so.”
lIf you’ve uploaded photos featuring your “couple-dom;” a more
powerful statement made if it’s put
up as the display picture, apparently.

sure give people a reason to envy
(in a good way) when they seem to
be happy and gossip about when
they’re not.
And because Fromance can be a
little more superficial than real
romance of real world with the
couple being aware of constant
public scrutiny, I assume they could
cast as new age soap operas any

Well, categorically, a Facebook
Romance could widely be divided
into two chunks. One that started
before the two people started using Facebook and the other that is
Facebook-borne. And today, since
it’s almost next to being a retard if
one does not hold a Facebook account and the first sentence people
utter to someone they like is “Can
I add you on Facebook?,” this world
had better be prepared for some
serious Fromance and more Fromancers in the days to come.
Yes, the Facebook-borne romance
progresses very rapidly because
what would ordinarily have taken
several dates can be obtained at
a glance of the potential partner’s
FB page. This, people from the old
school dating era may claim as
having no charm, to which I say it’s
a fast world. Hell the world could
see an end next year, why waste our
valuable time on wrong people? Fromance is definitely the way to go. !
In the movie, Matthias Schweighöfer portrays a young Red Baron
(Manfred Von Richthofen) who is somewhat arrogant and headstrong
yet gentlemanly when it comes to the usually messy business of warfare.
During one of the dogfights, he instructs his squadron to stop firing on
British planes once the battle over the skies has been clearly won. “We
are sportsmen, not butchers,” he says.
The Red Baron is a true story of one of World War One’s deadliest air
aces who became fascinated with flying when he was just a boy, and as a
young man joined the German army and became part of their formidable
air force wing. Along with his best friend Werner Voss (Til Schweiger), the
two fly in a squadron and during the course of the war, live through many
air battles together. Both the aces have a great talent for aerial battle and
also a sense of honor and fair play, and these cohorts often pay tribute to
fallen opponents by dropping wreaths over the wreckage of their planes.
During the opening scene of the movie, the two friends fly past a burial
ceremony in honor of a British ace whose plane they had downed while
the shocked family and well wishers look towards the sky in utter disbelief.
During the course of the battle, the men discover a Canadian pilot,
Capt. Roy Brown (Joseph Fiennes), who has been stranded in German
territory. The two then rescue the fallen enemy pilot by flying him out
in their own plane rather than leave an enemy soldier to die, and while
bringing him to safety Manfred meet Käte Otersdorf (Lena Headey), a
military nurse who has devoted her life to helping those wounded by
war. Manfred becomes deeply infatuated with Käte, but while she is also
taken with him, she cannot abide his open embrace of the blood sport
of war, and even as he becomes one of Germany’s most decorated
pilots, downing countless enemy planes, he comes to understand the
true horror of war and the consequences of his actions.
The last scene of the movie has The Red Baron meeting Capt. Brown
one last time.
If you thought only the Americans and the British could make good
fighter pilots, this movie should make you want to change your mind.

My cousins and I would fish for crabs and after a day’s work we would pop
them into the open fire and sit around waiting for the crabs to cook. Once
ready, we would dip the crabs into salt and chilli and enjoy barbecued crabs.
Thanks to seafood suppliers today, one can get frozen crabmeat which is
already cut and packed well. The only thing you have to do is defrost. Although crabs are not new to our culture and look scary with their pincers
and eyes, they have the softest of meats. My favorite is the crab salad with
vinaigrette dressing.
Tips
While deshelling the crabmeat, always use the back of a knife or any heavy
object to crush the shell. Once you blanch it, take it out and leave it in ice
water so it retains color and texture for long.

indoors surrounded by handcrafted Nepali goodies and a
luscious garden brimming with
smoking chicken is losing the
juicy nature of the meat thanks
to the minimal amount of inherent fat but the succulent bites
are a testimony to a good taste
in selection. I’d prefer the lettuce with a lower dose of vinegar, thank you very much, and
a more colorful presentation, if
not aromatically diverse, would
be welcome too. Undoubtedly
however, the salad has the potency to induce an appetite.

The menu is dotted with
something of everything most
of which is meat and largely
dominated by Continental. I
usually start with the Masala
tea. The tea comes in one of
the arguably biggest servings
around – a single mug lasts me
quarter of an hour. A sprinkle
of cinnamon powder augments
the subtle aroma of the balanced drink traced with bay leaf
and a hint of cardamom.
The Smoked Chicken Salad
is notable for the texture of the
chicken. The greatest risk in

fish in Arrabbiata sauce is a gourmet’s devour. The sauce though
remotely hot comes with all the
basic ingredients – a copious
amount of green and black olives with chili peppers in tomato
sauce – brilliant indeed in enticing the taste buds. The pasta is
thicker than the on es you get in
the market; the twist however
comes with the method of preparation. Rather than the regular
boiled stuff stacked on the plate,
the pasta here is gently done in
a skillet with a dash of olive oil
and herbs. The serving is heavi-
ly dominated by fish fillets – two
of those in fact – done perfect
with the fat preserved inside.
My suggestion for a drink – a
glass of sparkling water.
The ubiquitously Nepali dessert Sikarni comes topped with
homemade strawberry preserve
and garnished with a twig of
mint. The sourness of the cream
and the sweetness of the yogurt
blend well with the powerful
spices black pepper and nutmeg
hence striking a balance with
the flavor and creating a perfect
savory digestive – not too sweet
or too overpowering.
My Verdict
I like to think of Café Cheeno
as a place where you come for
more than just one thing –both
handicraft and food – just that I
can’t tell more of which. For the
craft, you can still stroll in the
alleys of Patan; for the food, you
must pay a visit. Either way, you
always have something to take
back home – goodies or nice
memories of food cooked with
love. God bless them, they give
you mineral water for free. !

ooja International, the sole authorized distributor of Volkswagen four-wheelers in Nepal, has introduced the Golf premium hatchback, in Nepal. The Golf is a small family car
that the company has been manufacturing since 1974. This
is the sixth model of Volkswagen cars being marketed in Nepal. The
Golf is a hatchback, but its size is closer to that of a sedan, which
translates into a compact but spacious four-wheeler.
The Golf is equipped with a four-cylinder petrol engine. Although it comes in three variants- the Trendline, the Comfortline
and the Sportline, Pooja International has launched the Golf Trendline for now, the most financially car amongst the three. With a displacement of 1600 cc, the car can deliver a maximum of 75 KW @
5600 rpm and a maximum torque of 148 Nm @ 3800 rpm. The car
is loaded with a five-speed manual gear box. According to the company, the car can hit speeds up to 184 kmph and gives a mileage of
12 kmpl in the city and 14 kmpl on the highway.
Golf is also equipped with all those security measurements that
are maintained by the company in all of its machines. Along with
safety features, the Golf is equipped with so many features that people
will be enthralled to know about them. The cars come with air bags.
Pooja International provides is providing a two-year warranty

n 18 April, Mega Bank Nepal Limited announced the formal inauguration of
its 12 branches. The formal inauguration was announced by Dr. Madan Kumar
Dahal through a video presentation of each of the inaugurations. “Mega Bank
is committed to providing financial solutions to not just the top, middle or bottom of the pyramid, but to strive towards providing financial solutions and economic
linkage to the entire economic pyramid," stated the Chairman in a press statement issued by the company.
The Bank commenced operations from 23 July 2010 and has already formed over 19,000
customer relationships and mobilized deposits in excess of Rs. 3.4 billion while disbursing
loans over Rs. 4 billion. “The expansion of our branch network will enable us to further
