See you at the 2010 Mandala Street Fair ! page3 make your statement one question What changes do you think women could bring if given the chance to run the government? Nepali women have been undermined and have not been given a chance to prove themselves in running the government. What changes could they bring if given the opportunity? Fr!day got some thought-provoking answers. — Mannat Shrestha BHUSAN DAHAL, RAVI BHAKTA SHRESTHA, LILY THAPA, Chief Executive Producer, Kantipur Television Vice Chairman, N.E. Group (Industrial & Trading House) Founding Director, Women for Human Rights I think running the government is not gender but skill-intensive. It is pure management. I believe management starts from home and grows beyond. In nepal, most homes are managed by women and they do it very well. It would be wrong to comment on the issue from the perspective of gender alone; but I’m sure women with super management skills would certainly run the government better than the current bunch of zero-management skilled men. If women were given the opportunity to run the government, they could probably bring about drastic changes in nepal. Most women are extremely goal-driven and have the ability to work until they reach their goals. such qualities would only bring about a catalytic and progressive environment to nepal’s current political scenario and their contribution in the government could usher in a new dawn for the country. I believe that if women run the government, their actions would be more accountable and transparent. The strategy to lessen the gap between the center level and local level planning will be adopted and implemented.women, especially marginalized women, will be prioritized in the programs. focus will be given more to non-conventional livelihood approaches for women. I feel women can manage resources like water and land in a systematic way, which are being wasted in nepal. DR. NEETI RANA, Professional Trainer/Motivator, New Era Career Development Institute At a time when progress has been stalled by intense political bickering, if women run the government, they would focus on cooperation rather than competition by nurturing relationships and promoting fairness and justice. They would make politics more collegial by supporting legislation benefiting women, children and families. being better observers, communicators and organizers, women would give more attention to health, hygiene and education. This would ensure growth and development and, at the same time, restore our national pride. ANURADHA KOIRALA, Chairman, Maiti Nepal first of all, I think it is not only men but also women who are entitled to run the government. It’s just that women are not getting the opportunity due to gender inequality. If women are given the chance, I believe the government will work 120 times better than now. we, women, work almost 23 hours a day and have the ability to balance the home and the office.we are organized and stable. Given this, I think women can run a better-organized and stable government. page3 Fr!day Issue 37 | 7 - 13 October, 2010 hall of frame What: ANBUG Rally Where: nanglo Café, durbar Marg Spotted: Gopal kakshyapati, udo weber, nischal bajracharya, sahana bajracharya, sanyukta Timilsina Enjoyed: The long drive through the scenic banepa to namo buddha. Media reports suggest that its demand has shot up from around 10 kilograms every day a year ago to 20-35 kg/day today. Prices have also continued to rise and traders said, with the international prices nearing USD1300 per ounce last week, its retail rates could soar past Rs. 40,000 per tola (11.66gms) during the festival season. The central bank (Nepal Rastra Bank – NRB) began auctioning gold last week in an attempt to tame the increasing demand and keep prices in check. But there were only a few takers. In a market where the daily demand is said to be up to 35 kg, the bank was able to sell only about 9 kg. Some traders complained about the procedures – also perhaps because there now would be records on who was buying how much, among others. And some even threatened that they would not participate in the auction. All said, while all the aforesaid facts stare at you from the newspapers everyday there has so far been no reliable explanation on what exactly is going on. The most recent macro-economic report of the central bank (based on annual data for fiscal year 2010) is of little help. The term gold appears in the report only thrice, once saying that it was one of the largest imports and twice in a paragraph discussing international prices. There is no analysis of the trend and not a word on what the bank thinks is going on. Gold imports had shot up sometime last year where one explanation for the increase – while prices remained high – was that it was being imported to Nepal and smuggled to India. The higher import duties in India than that in Nepal was a clear incentive for traders who made a guaranteed margin over the sale price (including mark-up). – Binod Bhattarai The government then stepped in and raised Nepali tariffs, which in a normal economy should have corrected the outflow, increased local supply and lowered prices. This correction billion a year later and more than doubled in FY 2010 to Rs. 41 billion (see table below). Even though data for the first two months of FY 2011 were not available on the NRB web- In a market where the daily demand is said to be up to 35 kg, the bank (NRB) was able to sell only about 9 kg. did not seem to have taken place as both the price and demand continued rising. The annual central bank data on gold imports are scary, to say the least. Nepal imported around Rs. 3 billion worth of gold in fiscal year (FY) 2008. It increased by about eight times to Rs. 16 site last week, gold imports are said to have continued growing. In early September – around the time when an ordinance allowing gold imports expired – the government banned its import using a clause in the law that allows such actions in the “national interest”. Table: Gold imports 2008-2010. (Rs. Million) Annual Percent Change 2007/08 2008/09R 2009/10P 2008/09 2009/10 3750.5 16574.6 41635.8 341.9 151.2 R=revised, P=provisional (Source: NRB) Still there was no explanation on what was going on or what was behind the gold imports that was threatening nationhood. The media did report that the decision was taken upon the central bank’s request as a measure to reduce the pressure on the current account deficit that had continued to widen owing largely to gold imports. In the absence of an official explanation as to what exactly is going on, speculations are rife about it being used – possibly – as an ‘investment’ with both the stock market and real estate now becoming less attractive as options. Others suspect that may be replacing cash stashed away at home (for a number of reasons, including anti-money laundering rules), and still others feared that it was still being smuggled to India – while the receipts seemed to be disappearing into thin air. ! Binod Bhattarai is a journalist who runs The Writing Workshop ([email protected]). feature Fr!day Issue 37 | 7 - 13 October, 2010 5 Whole latte love! I f you drive often enough, 35 km northwest towards Kakani from Kathmandu, you might notice a few things. There are the fishermen selling you fresh Japanese trout from the roadside restaurants; the jingles on the local radio station playing from the roadside shops; and the unhurried walk that only villagers can pull off, as well as their scorns at the cars that cover them with dust. At some point, your cell phone will probably stop working, and you might notice how the twolane road darkens as it slices into a canyon of trees on either side of the road, and how your car shrinks, puttering at the foot of the giant, primeval forest, and how that tea shop at Nagarjun is starting to seem like a beacon of civilization. And if you keep going, eventually, you will arrive at Juretham. Juretham is where Alpine Coffee Estate P. Ltd. is, cultivating their first coffee plant on 110 ropanies of land. I ask around and find that not everyone is thrilled about the idea of an increased commodification of the coffee industry. Lately, it’s been a pothead urban myth in the area that coffee farmers are trying to take over the entire village land and drive the original inhabitants somewhere else. Now that — Prasanna K.C. something like commercial coffee farming is actually happening, that dangerous moment is approaching when paranoia will intersect with a viable reality. storage facility, which meant no running water. This coincided, as luck would have it, with the harvest season when manpower is almost impossible to find since greeted with small-town hospitality. It was close to midday, and they had been up since dawn. “Coffee just happened,” they said in unison. Fresh out of Lately, it’s been a pothead urban myth in the area that coffee farmers are trying to take over the entire village land and drive the original inhabitants somewhere else. Kumud Singh, Rabindra Shrestha and Sandeep Jalan, all below 30 years of age, are coffee growers, and they have had a very long day. There had been a delay in the construction of the water everyone is busy farming their own land. The three had been scrambling to meet this deadline lest the monsoon began; a delicate process in a part of the country where new faces are not generally MBA school in Kathmandu, the three met and, over a few rounds of beer, decided to begin farming coffee for commercial purposes. Theirs is an origin story as humble as that of Silicon Val- ley (Steve Jobs inventing the personal computer in his garage). The next six months, they made numerous trips to coffee farms, the Coffee Development Board and met with people who were in this line of work. Initially, everyone was encouraging and welcoming. “Only now that our plants have actually grown and our presence is visible are we finding that the people who initially encouraged us are threatened, consider us as competitor, and are becoming unresponsive,” said Kumud. “Has this deterred you?” I asked. “Not at all,” they replied. I could not help but think that people such as the threesome had no doubt that major change was inevitable, and that they were at the vanguard of a coming revolution when it comes to coffee farming. “People like us won’t be able to make a killing if big players come in,” Kumud conceded. “But we’ll be able to make a living. What’s going to happen is, if you really love growing coffee, you’ll be able to make a living doing something you love.” Fixing me with one of his long stares, a grin frozen on his face, Kumud spoke as if he could see the future. And he liked it. ! people power behind the change G orakh Bista is the director of the recently released documentary, ‘Trophy Hunting’. The film focuses on the sport of hunting for “trophies”, which are the heads or horns of prized animals in Nepal. The animals that are hunted for their prize trophies are only the oldest males, whose horns are often so large that they can no longer feed or procreate. During the making of the documentary, Bista followed a team of hunters who ventured deep into the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve in far western Nepal with hopes of returning with the head of a Himalayan blue sheep. spot light Trophy Hunting – Leah Olson The fIlM foCuses on The sPoRT of hunTInG foR “TRoPhIes”, whICh ARe The heAds oR hoRns of PRIZed AnIMAls In nePAl. How did you first get interested in making this documentary? I was in Kathmandu researching something about poaching. It was then that I learned about legal hunting from my friend. He told me there is legal and professional hunting in Nepal, especially in the Dhorpatan region, the highlands of the country. I thought for two or three months about this. I asked people who know about trophy hunting and also talked with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation. That’s when I started, and I’ve spent two years on this film. What was the most challenging part of making the film? Shooting it. It was because equipment was not available there. There was no power there (in Dhorpatan). I had to cover my camera with my jacket because I had to save the camera and the battery from the cold. So I would cover the camera and shoot. Also, most of the hunters and local people were suffering from minor illnesses because of the altitude. For me, I had to hide from the hunters and the animals. I couldn’t disturb either one, so it was really challenging. We (my filming crew and I) also couldn’t speak and had to signal to each other from across the hills. What is the controversy surrounding trophy hunting? Some people don’t want any animals to be killed, but they should know that the oldest blue sheep that are killed have already lived for around 14 years (their full life span). They will soon die because of their big horns. They die of starvation because their horns get so big, weighing between 8 to 10 kilos, that they can no longer feed. These old blue sheep then come down from the hills and are preyed on by the snow leopard, the blued sheep’s only enemy. If the oldest male blue sheep is still in the herd, the snow leopard will target the whole group and could end up killing a younger sheep or a female. What was the best part about making the documentary and being out there with the hunters? When I got the last shot. The culmination of the hunting expedition is when one of the hunters shoots and kills an old blue sheep from afar and the animal tumbles down a steep hill. I couldn’t have gotten any further shots like that. I was a little bit up from the hunters and it was really dangerous for me because maybe the bullet could have killed me if it missed the animal! Do you think this sort of hunting has potential to bring tourism to Nepal? Yes, most of the people who come here to hunt are quality tourists. They come here and they spend a lot of money, the same amount that 100 regular tourists might spend. People who come here to hunt maybe spend 20,000 Euros to go on the trophy-hunting trip. They don’t dump plastic and they don’t disturb the wildlife. They just hunt and come back. In my opinion, there are a lot of old male animals (those nearing their death) that can be found all over this nation. If the government of Nepal can encourage this type of business, it could attract a lot of quality tourists who can spend a lot of money in this country. We could ‘give’ the oldest animals to hunters, get a lot of money and, at the same time, fight illegal poaching, which would save a lot more animals from being killed. ‘Trophy Hunting’ was screened in Kathmandu at the World Trade Center on 2 October ! RE-FUZED ART head on to bhaktapur’s dattatreya durbar square for art with a difference. 13 Open Art opening date: 8 october, Closing date: 10 october, venue: bhaktapur dattatreya square, entrance: free R e-fuzed, a contemporary art group from kathmandu university, is organizing a unique art exhibition tilted ‘Re-fuzed’ on the occasion of dashain. This art exhibition is being held in selected areas of the dattatreya square with the aim of breaking away from the boundaries and limitations (in terms of the strict timings, the systematic manner in which exhibitions have to be held and so on and so forth) posed by art galleries. Another aim of organizing this out-of-the-gallery exhibition is to expose a larger section of the general public to view contemporary art. The artworks will be on display 24 hours a day for three whole days so that visitors have the liberty to come to the exhibition any time they want. The artworks on display will mainly be assemblages, and since they will be on display during the night as well, there will be lots of lights involved. don’t be surprised if you come across glowing artwork or some out-of-the-box creations as this exhibition is all about breaking conventions and being unique. Along with the art exhibition, there will be live musical performances during the evenings. (yukta bajracharya) 3 Qs with Aditya Aryal Member, Re-fuzed breaking free The desire to break free from the rigid walls and constraints of a gallery, the want to enhance the contemporary art scene in Nepal; these thoughts gave birth to the unique exhibition, which is taking place at the Bhaktapur Dattatreya Square. Fr!day caught up with a member of Refuze, a group formed by the students studying fine arts in Kathmandu University, to understand the exhibition better. How exactly, according to your group, do galleries restrict artists and their exhibitions? we are not saying that galleries necessarily restrict artists as such, but to help nepali contemporary art to really flourish, galleries aren’t that suitable. The whole idea is to refuse the boundaries and break away from the ‘10 to 5’ timings and the other stringent “dos” and “don’ts” that galleries have. People can come to the exhibition any time they want – be it early morning or midnight, for instance, because we are exhibiting for 24 hours. Plus, galleries tend to have an aristocratic feel to them – somehow making them more accessible only to the elite class. by holding this exhibition in public, we are also trying to bring the people in general closer to art. Fr!day gets a sneak peek of this event by talking to one of the organizers of this fiesta. What makes this festival one-of-a-kind? This is the only festival that consists of cultural and adventurous activities all in one place. Plus, we have organized this with a nonprofit motive. In this way, I think this festival is one-of-a-kind. How will it benefit the rest of Thamel? we will be encouraging the visitors to Thamel to walk around. we will be promoting the culture of pedaling on the streets. People are going to recognize Thamel as a hub for all kinds of activities. eventually, it is going to benefit Thamel as a whole. Since the area is limited, how have you planned to manage the human traffic? The whole idea of having a festival is to have as many people as possible. If there isn’t a crowd, then the festival is not successful. we will be having two entrances and two exits, which, we feel, will be quite enough for the human traffic flow. (Mannat shrestha) Score! Fr!day caught up with him to find out how the event went and how successful they were in meeting their objective. ANBUG supports many causes through this event. Has the organization considered supporting a sole cause perhaps to make it more effective? Do you think your endeavors have been effective? I think our endeavors have been quite effective. for example, the cleft lip patients we had supported earlier can now compete in the society, and our helping them has made a lot of difference to those people’s lives and future. This time, we distributed school bags and jackets to the students at shree Mahankal Prastabit nimna Madhyamik vidhyala, which had the maximum attendance record. by doing this, we wanted the students to realize for themselves that one should attend school on a regular basis.we just wanted to put these underprivileged children in the right path so that they can stand on their own feet later in life. How do you plan to ensure more participation from people who are not members of ANBUG in the future? The interest for bugs is gradually increasing, especially amongst the youth. so even those who don’t own one want to be part of the rally by either participating in such events or through various other means like contributions and sponsorships. everybody wants be a part of the ‘bug Culture’. The paintings are so serene and calm, yet full of emotion that it compels us to rethink our perspective on life. The use of mixed medium brings depth to his paintings, and makes them come alive. he has used cracked, rough and smooth textures as well as layers of dark and light to represent the balance between different emotions such as concentration and distraction, creation and destruction, and even certainty and uncertainty. In some paintings, he has used warm earthy colors while in others, like ‘serenity’ and ‘Green Tara’, he has used blues and greens, highlighting the calmness in the theme.Though all of his paintings were equally admirable, the one that stood out from the rest was ‘The Path of salvation’, a 9’x 3’ painting, which depicted buddha’s journey through life.‘The Path of salvation’ was indeed a brilliantly done work of art.The exhibition was held from 24 september and ended on 26 september. The common types of nets include trawl nets, dredges, beach seines, purse seines, gillnets, trammel nets, lift nets and cast nets. 1 REEL It is a device utilized to move the fishing line in position and/ or retrieve it with the help of a spool mounted on an axle. fishing reels are widely used in recreational fishing, mostly angling. They are most often used together with a fishing rod. And Mo Re HOOKED! FISHING IS NOT JUST ABOUT CATCHING FISH. A FISHING TRIP IS AN IDEAL TIME WHEN FAMILIES AND FRIENDS GET TO RELAX TOGETHER, ENJOY BEING OUTDOORS AND LEARN THE THRILLS AND SPILLS OF NEW SKILLS. Text: Suyasha Sitaula, Photos: ECS Media Fishing is excellent for people looking for something to do outdoors. An age-old passion, has achieved the status of being a great sports adventure in recent years. Sometimes you can even caste your line, settle down comfortably and, perhaps, read a book or take a nap. If you are carrying some ‘nibbles’, you couldn’t ask for anything better. Fishing lets you chart your own course since the field is so broad and you can even discover your own niche suitable to you. From local catch to release pond to deep-sea fishing, from making your own lures to raising your own bait, from ice fishing to night fishing, there’s plenty for you to indulge in while pursuing this hobby. Although fishing is done extensively in the many rivers of Nepal, using both the primitive method and modern-day tackles, geographical and communication inconveniences come in the way for anglers (especially those who reside in big cities) to fully enjoy the sport. Nevertheless, for fresh-water fishing, one can always take a trip to east Nepal (Sapta Koshi, Arun and Tammar) and closer destinations like the Sunkoshi at Nepaltar. There are different styles of fishing with each one using different equipment. There is bait casting, spinning, pole and line, spin-casting and fly-fishing. You need to choose different types of poles, rods, hooks and bait. Depending on the type of water you will be in – saltwater, freshwater, or ice – you need to choose a pole with different types of reels and line spools. Also, depending on the type of fish you intend to catch, a variety of hook sizes have to be chosen. You can also choose between various kinds of sinkers and floats to keep your line steady in the water so the fish aren’t scared away. Fr!day gives you the nitty-gritty on the most popular types of fishing tackles: ROD This is a tool used to catch fish. A strong fishing line is attached to a long, flexible rod or pole, which holds a hook with the right kind of bait at its end to lure fish towards the hook. HOOK This is probably what is most typically associated with fishing. hooks and lines come in many different forms, including handlines, poles, longlines and trolling lines. The hooks carry the bait. FLOATS 1 2 2 These are objects attached to the end of a fishing line and are crafted so as to catch a fish’s attention by their movement, vibration and color to make it bite the hook. lures can be attached to single, double or treble hooks. LINE This is a length of cord to which the leader, float, sinker and hook are attached. factors that often determine what line an angler chooses for a given fishing environment include breaking strength, knot strength, uv resistance, castability, limpness, stretch, abrasion resistance and visibility. These are common prey species of fish to attract them. The bait may be alive or dead. Common natural baits include worms, leeches, minnows, frogs, salamanders and insects. natural baits are effective due to the lifelike texture, odor and color of the bait. PLAYING THE FISH SINKERS sinkers and weights are some of the most important pieces of terminal tackle in fishing. A common trend is to refer to sinkers as tackle associated with live-bait fishing and weights as tackle used with artificial lures. TRAPS Traps are enclosed spaces used to catch fish or other invertebrates. usually used passively, traps may be baited to entice the desired species to enter them. Common examples of traps include pots, stows or bag nets, and fixed traps. 1. when a fish bites the hook, it struggles to set itself free. This might involve jumping, making a long run, swimming back against the line or swimming around obstacles. different species of fish fight differently. 2. fish hooked in shallow water are more likely to jump and behave more frantically than those hooked in deep water. deep-water fish often swim down in an attempt to get to the bottom of the water. 3. It’s possible to land many small fish just by reeling them in. They’ll fight, but they aren’t as strong as the line and the rod. use lighter tackle and you expect some fight out of even the smallest fish. 4. If you’re catch-and-release fishing, don’t fight too long or the fish will die due to exhaustion before or after you release it. 5. If a fish makes a run for it, don’t panic. And don’t try to reel in while the fish is swimming away from your line. Relax and let the drag and rod do the work. Information Courtesy: Mr. Ravi Man singh BAITS These are attached to the fishing line. They act as visual indicators between the rod and hook bait. when a fish ‘picks’ up your hook and swims away, the float is pulled beneath the water surface. seeing the float disappear into the water lets you know that you have caught a fish. LURES entertainment let the good times begin friday pick The Unthinkable Pink Panther 2 — Prasanna K.C. — Dr. Banu Sharma U nbelievable! For 24 hours, Liverpool was in the relegation zone! Keeping that in mind Gerrard was rested for the Europa league so that he would be fresh for the home game against Blackpool. But after the Sunday game, they are sure to stay there for at least two weeks. Their below-par performance had the fans booing them off at half time. Someone rightly said they are two games away from implosion. Torres pulling out with an injury at the start of the game was the final straw that broke the camel’s back! The second half was much better, but not enough. Newlypromoted Blackpool pulled off an unthinkable win at Anfield. Spurs had a wonderful European night last Wednesday against FC Twente, a story of a missed penalty, another penalty, a great strike, a sending off with Raphael Van Der Vart being involved in all of them! He is getting better with every match and bagged a brace against Villa on the day-seven match. Drab draw for Man United again. Just four points out of a possible 12 on the road. Must be a record for the boss! If United keep playing like this, Man City finishing above them could come to fruition. Everton finally had an away win at Birmingham. Hammers drew with Fulham. The seven matches played on Saturday had no drama as such. Yes, there was a mid-week game for United, still no excuse for their poor performance. Would an unfit Rooney in the starting 11 have been better than a missing Rooney so that United could have clinched a winner at the stadium of light? Coming to Chelsea, how many times has Drogba scored against Arsenal? Let’s add one more to that list. Despite early pressure from Arsenal and a fine save from Cech, Drogba did what he does best, especially against Arsenal – score. This win keeps them four points clear at the top. Full credit to Arsenal though; they tried. The absence of their talismanic captain Cesc, though, proved costly. And in the Man City - Newcastle game, the latter had a chance until super sub in cinemas Adam Johnson again sealed the three points for Man City. They are definite title contenders now. The table as it stands at the end of week seven – Chelsea, Man City, Man United and Arsenal are the top four while Liverpool, Wolves and West Ham make up the bottom three. This week, international break, no club football. England entertains Montenegro at Wembley on 12 October. Many, like me, will wonder what to do this weekend; maybe catch up on missed La Liga matches? Mourinho has been tipped to succeed Ferguson at Old Trafford. Unfortunately, the special one’s present employers may not allow him to pass the interim period prior to taking up that job as Real are not firing on all cylinders. The fans will soon show him their displeasure by waving the white handkerchiefs if their club does not deliver. Sobering thought: He is the 10th coach in the last 10 years! Capello lost his job despite winning the league title. With no club games this weekend, I wish you all a wonderful weekend, recharge yourselves and be ready for the games the coming week. So, until next week, ciao. ! COMING SOON The Pink Panther 2, the sequel to the 2006 worldwide hit, stars steve Martin as he reprises the role of the intrepid-if-bumbling french police detective, Inspector Jacques Clouseau. when legendary treasures from around the world are stolen, including the priceless Pink Panther diamond, Inspector Clouseau must team up with detectives from other countries to rout the daring cat burglar, ‘The Tornado’, who has returned after a decade of inactivity. lily Tomlin’s character, Mrs. berenger, a spinoff of her Tasteful lady, represents the movie’s successful attempt to be a comedy of manners. A police instructor on etiquette, she tutors Clouseau, whose every third sentence is a sexist or racist slur – as when she overhears him saying to his Japanese colleague, “I suppose you will be wanting sushi, my little yellow friend” – on politically correct speech. stuti basnyet k.C., development outreach and Communication specialist at usAId, describes the movie as “a wonderful comedy which has got plenty going for it, including a great lead in Martin, a strong supporting cast, classy production values, a cute romantic subplot, and a screenplay that keeps the gags flowing at a steady pace.” In Pink Panther 2, there’s no denying steve Martin’s commitment to the role of Jacques Clouseau, the fumbling and deluded Gallic detective brought to life with overwhelming comic timing. off the shelf A Widow’s Gift — Yukta Bajracharya A Widow’s Gift, written by shanti Mishra, is the story about a young brahmin girl, Radha, who gets married to a man twice her age and becomes a widow soon after. living in an orthodox hindu community, she gets ostracized by the society. but the strong and patient Radha strives for change in her conservative society for her as well as for other women who are in the same situation as she is in. Mishra illustrates Radha as an inspirational character and develops the transition of the protagonist from a young and naïve bride to a duteous woman, well aware of her obligations to her husband’s family. The book is very much relevant to the hardships faced by a nepali woman living in a typical orthodox hindu society – one whose rules know no bending. My first time at any ‘eat-out’ is made even more difficult by my friends who usually recommend me a nice place to go to, but they never tell me about the food. So, when the menu arrived on my table at Lhakpa’s Chulo, I had to devote quite some time to study it first. I have always been curious about the dubbed role of appetizers when food, by law of nature, is supposed to quench one’s appetite. However, I learnt from my Salmon Salad that a pair of magical hands could very well reverse the law. Simply put, the quantity of meatballs at the eatery might appear to be very miserly, but their taste is sheer delight. The ginger-garlic combination dominates the mild spices, and the fresh coriander complements the juicy texture of the meatballs. The sweet garlic sauce gives the final punch. Chicken momos here come with a clear soup garnished with roughly chopped coriander plus two different sauces, each worked on extensively. The chili-timbur sauce not only makes for a perfect dipping for the momos but also serves as a fabulous seasoning for the soup. The tomato-sesame sauce has a rough texture and its flavorful taste makes for a brilliant dipping. The momos themselves are medium-sized, mildly spiced, adequately juicy and tasteful. I couldn’t make anything of the chunks of salad vegetables and leaves on the side of the plate though. As for the clear soup, I consumed it in multiple ways – drank it clear first, then seasoned it with the chili-timbur sauce before sipping it, and finally threw in some momos in it and ate them with, you guessed it, a spoon. My Verdict Although only recently opened, Lhakpa’s Chulo is a remnant of yesteryear Kathmandu hospitality as the bottled drinking water is free and the food is good. There were quite a few of them actually, and Pratiksha, an employee at the outlet, informed me that these decorative pieces are made by women belonging to the esther benjamin Trust, a charity organization. This charity gives shelter to women forced into the trafficking and prostitution trade, and provides them a means to make a living. see what I mean when I said it was full of surprises. whether it’s something big like a unique bed you’re looking for or something small like a flower vase, you are sure to find something you’ll fall in love with at first sight. Sapna Thapa, Principal of Mother Care International Pre-School, shares 10 tips that will make this notoriously troublesome task as easy as eating a pie. — Shreeya Joshi 1. while choosing a pre-school, the first simple step is to look at the infrastructure of the school. look at the playgrounds, the classrooms, the dining room… Is the atmosphere, as a whole, child-friendly? 2. we all know children just love romping around, but safety always needs to come first. Check that the playgrounds and classrooms are all child-proof, and that there is minimum danger of your child getting injured.you might also want to find out what measures will be taken if in case your child does get hurt. 3. one of the most important aspects of a school is its teachers. The teachers need to be professionally trained and, most impor- tantly, psychologically aware of a child’s behavior and development. They need to be able to handle small-aged children and take proper care of them. takes precedence over academic prowess. Choose a school that uses a holistically approved method of teaching rather than one that just focuses on academics. the teacher should be completely in tune to your child’s needs. And what better way is there to learn about a child’s needs than from their parents? 4. when it comes to your children, you definitely do not want them to fall sick due to unhygienic conditions. Check the cleanliness of the school. If the school provides lunch for the children, you might want to find out if it’s hygienic and if the food is healthy or not. 6. different schools have different teaching methods and styles and children learn in different ways. you do not always have to opt for a school following the Montessori method. Just make sure the school you choose uses a teaching method that your child can benefit most from. 8. The curriculum of the class should also be a point to consider. have a look at the lesson plans and make sure you approve of what your child is going to be taught. 5. As a parent, you may want your child to excel academically. however, it is important for you to know that at that small an age, a child is only beginning to learn. so the overall development of the child 7. Another aspect you may want to consider is the way that teachers communicate with parents. Communication between teachers and parents is crucial because 9. of course, the school is for your child, so the happiness of your child needs to come into the equation while choosing the right school. Take your child to the school and let him/ her roam around and interact with other children. If the child seems to be adapting to the school, is happy being there and shows interest in wanting to go back, then you know you’ve made the right choice. 10. lastly, while choosing the school, parents obviously need to be happy about their decision. If you can, blindfolded and hand over your child to the teachers in the school and know that they’ll be safe and happy there, then… bInGo! you’ve selected the best school for your child. ! The steering’s beautifully weighted. There’s a good seat-of-the-pants feel. The brakes are powerful and the seats hold you in place perfectly. This is all very clever. I’ve been saying for ages that everyone wants a car that’s fast and sporty, but not so that it breaks the spine in two every time they run over a pothole. The new Honda Accord also remains a very appealing car for a lot of reasons. It has an advantage over its competitors in the reputation for reliability, which not only makes the driving experience worthwhile but also gives one of the best resale value, the latter very important for people who frequently change their cars (believe it or not, the segment of people who change their rides at least once every 365 days exists!). There’s more. I remember reading the other day that in the past 13 years there has never been a single failure of Honda’s VTEC system. Not one. Ever. So, if you’re looking to buy a Honda, this should be a pretty good reason to thwart any forms of cognitive dissonance you’re likely to get when you begin comparing it with the midsized SUVs available these days for less. N o one tunes into a music radio station because of the announcer. Music lovers tune in because of the music, and apparently the ‘happening’ music on the radio channels these days is a never-ending stream of increasingly angry black men who, as far as I can tell, wouldn’t know a piano if one were to land on their heads. Call me old school, or even boring, but I chose a collection of Elvis Presley’s ballads for the test drive-cum-early lunch on a Wednesday morning. No, I do not sound like my father. He can tell the difference between Todd Rundgren and Karen Carpenter. Whereas today, there is simply no difference between 50 Cent,Wyclef Jean and Black Eyed Peas except for the amount of times each of them has been shot at. Now, this statement makes me a very, very old man and that means I’m feeling well qualified this week to write about Honda’s new Accord. Over the years, Honda has tried and tried to give itself a youthful appeal. So, at first I thought the new Accord might be yet another attempt to woo thrusting young executives out of their Land Rovers. Initially, to my eyes, it looked as pretentious as somebody’s father unbuttoning his shirts and trying hard to dance to the latest tunes in one of those overly rated late night wedding parties where everyone who hung around after 9 were either drunk or hitching a ride. The Honda Accord has the requisite black interior and the de rigueur fake carbon fibre cubbyhole covers, so that inside it looks like a gentleman’s electric razor. In addition, it has a huge orange speedometer that goes up to 160mph, twin exhausts, lights like Butler & Wilson jewelery and a titanium gearlever that offers a selection of six forward gears. However, test driving on the roads of Kathmandu, I was pleasantly surprised. I could feel the car rise as it crested a bump on the road and I tensed, waiting for it to crash back down again. But the crash never came. The petrol engine car settled gently, like it’s a burly paramedic and you’re on a stretcher although diesel would be my choice, with its supreme acceleration ability and burst of power when you feel you need it the most. Strangely, this doesn’t seem to have affected the handling unduly. I’ve been saying for ages that everyone wants a car that’s fast and sporty, but not so that it breaks the spine in two every time they run over a pothole. Except for one enormous detail. If we look at the Honda Accords running on the streets, and considering the whooping starting price of Rs. 6.90 Mil., it makes one think if we have ever seen anything quite so, wait for it – unattractive. not. This huge hunk of a car could do with biger wheels. A few question marks. The rear window tapers when the bodywork does My verdict: Great legs. Can’t say the same about the face. ! No doubt, the Japanese have a great engineering sense. Only if someone tutored them on style. bazaar markets & launches Festival Offer Yamaha Dhoom Offer Morang Auto works, the sole distributor of yamaha vehicles in nepal, has introduced a promotional scheme for their customers, which is sure to be a hit.yamaha has introduced the ‘yamaha dashain dhoom’ scheme where on the purchase of yamaha bikes, customers can get sure-shot gifts from yamaha. 4261160 Hit & Fit Arun Intercontinental Traders, the authorized dealer of Maruti automobiles for nepal, has launched a festive scheme called hit & fit offer. under the scheme, customers can get a discount of up to Rs. 100,000 with the purchase of every Maruti suzuki vehicle depending on the model. 5545891 TVS Vroom Vroom Scheme Arun Intercontinental Traders, the authorized distributor of Tvs motorbikes and scooters for nepal, has launched a promotion scheme, the ‘Tvs vroom vroom Click offer’ that will run from dashain till Tihar 2010. Fr!day Issue 37 | 7 - 13 October, 2010 23 different strokes Haggling Hunters — Sunita Gurung As we enter into a ‘war game of numbers’ and our minds race to compute the amount that we find to be the most appropriate, purchasing an item at a much lesser price definitely ushers in a feeling of elation. In the standard list of unapproved habits in women catalogued by men folk, exists (in the most indiscreet of fashions) the art of negotiation commonly known as bargaining. Perhaps it goes beyond the male mindset to really understand why we haggle over such small amounts and rejoice when we succeed. Correct me if I am wrong, but it’s very similar to why men drink so much beer, or spend hours in front of the Tv without uttering a single word. so my question is, what is wrong about a woman looking for a bargain? yes, we can sinfully splurge on that pair of branded shoes or the bag with the elite tag at the drop of a hat. but we just cannot do that without harassing the ‘downtrodden’ (the vendors). Tacky to some and embarrassing to most, bargaining keeps alive that persuasive streak in a woman. If horse-trading is permissible among our so-called netas and bargaining is rife amidst the current political imbroglio, there is absolutely nothing discomforting about it. hAGGlInG MIGhT noT be well ReCeIved MosT of The TIMe, buT bARGAInInG Is ouR ‘bIRThRIGhT’. According to recent polls conducted by onePoll.com, an average woman spends about three years of her life shopping, which explains why we spend so much time hobnobbing around looking for good deals. when saif Ali khan rattled off the dialogue: “women even haggle over a stalk of coriander leaf!” in one of the bollywood films that he acted in, he sounded as if he knew a lot about women; forget about his disastrous marriage and a failed relationship. for all I know, the scriptwriter of that film was definitely a male. of course, we do want the right price for a bunch of herbs, which dominates our cooking recipes. but we don’t commit such a felony for a stalk please! haggling might not be well received most of the time, but bargaining is our ‘birthright’. ! Oman Air is the 27th International airline that has entered the country. With Oman Air in the country, the company plans to provide people with job opportunities and foreign destinations to fly to. We have a lot of people flying to the Middle East to work. Are there any plans to have any special rates for such people? yes, we did have a special rate floated for the month of september as introductory rates for nepal. but later, prices will be as per the current market rates. If manpower companies can provide the airline with a certain number of heads on certain flights, we can definitely work out special rates in such cases. The country is expecting a lot of tourists with Nepal Tourism Year 2011 approaching. Any plans to increase flight frequency then? The Azzabko brand will be made available at more than 300 retail outlets in kathmandu. 5544263 Oman Air has been in existence for the past 17 years and flies to 40 international destinations. How soon do you plan to increase the number of sectors it flies to? between 1993 and 2007, oman Air was only a regional airline because the government had invested in other airlines and there was not much focus on oman Air. but in 2008, the state invested heavily in oman Air, which led to a rapid expansion in the past two years in terms of fleet strength and destinations. by the end of this year or early next year, we are planning to penetrate into more sectors.
