GAEILG’ ACLA – THE ACHILL DIALECT OF IRISH Deirtear go minic nach bhfuil aon Ghaeilge in Acaill.Níl Gaeilg’ Acla ach in Acaill amháin, Gaeilg’ nach bhfuil le fáil in áit ar bith eile. B’fhéidir nach bhfuil sé chomh laidir le Gaeilge i gceantracha eile ach is féidir a rá mar sin féin go bhfuil borradh sa pharóiste le cúplá bliain anuas, nach raibh ann le fada. The Gaeilg’ which was spoken to us at home and at school in Achill is very different from Gaeilg’ spoken in a neighbouring Parish, never mind another county or province. Many past generations of Achill children may have grown up completely unaware that the Gaeilg’ they spoke is unique to their area. This was the Gaeilg’ that had been passed down from parents to children and indeed it was taught in the national schools. It is only now that we can appreciate the lengths these people went to to ensure that Gaeilg’ Acla was nurtured and preserved. Join in our class and find out more. CENTENARY BO OKLET The Scoil Acla Centenary booklet is on sale which includes a wealth of information on the history of Scoil Acla, the past 25 years, information on Achill’s artistic heritage, a fascinating article about Achill Irish (Gaelig’ Acla) as well as a free CD including words and music of the song ‘Teanga Bhinn ár Máthar’.
