They offer a rich variety of unique products and services with friendly, personal service that makes shopping fun. They also put about twice as much money back into the community as chain stores do, and infinitely more than on-line retailers. When you spend locally and with intention every one of your dollars will contribute to quality of life in our extraordinary community. Make your shopping, dining, and spa-going experiences even more stress-free by using one of Los Gatos’ eleven free public parking lots or, better yet, the free valet parking that’s available starting the Friday after Thanksgiving though Christmas Eve. Look for the article about holiday parking and valet services inside this edition. You’ll never be more than a short, refreshing and scenic walk from your downtown destinations. Treat yourself and your loved ones to the gift of a quintessential holiday experience - Holiday Carriage Rides through downtown Los Gatos. For more than three decades the carriage rides have been a staple in town, providing traditional horse-drawn carriage rides through the festively decorated downtown and nearby historic neighborhoods. The 20-minute ride starts in Town Plaza and continues through the Almond Grove district and North Santa Cruz Avenue. Within Silicon Valley, Holiday Carriage Rides are a 30-year tradition unique to Los Gatos and riders come from many miles away to enjoy this one-of-a-kind experience. This year, be sure you do, too! Look inside for more information and be sure to order your tickets now so you’re not disappointed when the rides sell out. On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce we wish you a wonderful holiday season and a bright New Year ahead! Holiday Help Available from TeenForce D o you need any extra help for your business or at home for the holidays? TeenForce is a local non-profit jobs program that helps teens ages 14 – 20 get work experience. They have placed over 200 teens in part-time or temporary jobs in offices, retail stores, marketing and social media positions. TeenForce operates like a staffing agency and makes it very convenient for employers to work with youth. They do the recruiting, initial screening and employ the youth directly providing the workers compensation insurance, taking care of payroll taxes and writing the paychecks. Teenforce can accommodate part-time work hours, variable hours, and temporary or short term assignments such as one time needs or events. If you need a testimonial, the Chamber has hired TeenForce for a number of our events as well as some assistance after our move. The students that were sent over were punctual, personable and efficient. It was a win-win all around! The event was another sell-out with no glasses available for sale that day. The wineries, merchants and the 617 guests all had a wonderful day. Guests came from all over the Bay area to enjoy the hospitality of Los Gatos and we know that many of them will return again and again. There are many moving parts to an event of this size. We want to say thank you to the over 30 wineries, 10 food providers and 27 merchants who provided the food, wine and ambiance for the Walk. Special thanks to Kane Investment Management, Inc. for their sponsorship of the crystal wine glasses our guests enjoyed. A round of applause goes out to the committee who worked tirelessly to make the event happen and to the many volunteers and the teens from TeenForce all of whom are an integral part of these endeavors. Thank you, thank you, thank you! The Spring Wine Walk date is Saturday, May 18, 2013. Tickets will go on sale on the Chamber website in March. Mark your calendar – Our Wine Walks are sellout events. D oes the phrase “Holiday Carriage Rides” evoke images of elegant horse-drawn carriages meandering through the beautifully decorated Almond Grove district and making their way down N. Santa Cruz Avenue, lit up to accentuate the magic that is Los Gatos for the holidays? It should because the Chamber is bringing this annual tradition back to Los Gatos for you and yours to enjoy. Rides begin on Friday, November 30 at 7 PM following the lighting of the tree in Plaza Park and the arrival of Santa. Additionally, rides will be available on Saturday, December 1, Friday and Saturday, December 7 & 8, and every night from December 14 through December 23. Rides begin at 5 PM and run every half hour with the last ride of the night at 9:30 PM except Sundays when they operate from 4-8:30 PM. They leave from our gaily decorated booth located in Plaza Park across the street from the Post Office. Rides run rain or shine. Our 2012 Holiday Carriage Ride Reservation site has magically appeared on the Chamber’s website and reservations have started coming in for this holiday tradition. To make your reservation go to our website, www.losgatoschamber.com and click on the carriage graphic on the home page or contact the office for additional information. Thanks to our very generous sponsors who help make Holiday Carriage Rides happen. The trees sparkle with lights and shops are decorated in the spirit of the holiday season. There’s much to do and our special town will again draw many local and Bay Area residences to shop, dine and enjoy all that Los Gatos has to offer. It is also the time when we encourage residents to shop local and help our local economy. It is also the time when parking is on so many people’s minds. The Town of Los Gatos is again providing FREE valet parking that will be available for shoppers and employees alike beginning the day after Thanksgiving (November 25) and ends on Christmas Eve. The service is available Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9AM-9PM and daily beginning on the Sunday and Monday of the week of December 24th. (There’s no valet service on the first three Sundays and Mondays after opening, and then open every day after that until Christmas Eve.) You will find the FREE valet parking on the upper and lower level of the parking lot located between Elm Street and Grays Lane just off University Ave. Drop off of cars is on the upper level of the lot. As business owners in downtown, please ask your employees to use the designated employee parking lots, the all-day lots or the valet parking to free up the on street customer parking and customer lots. It’s not good enough to say “Don’t park in front of my store”. For the cost of a small tip (which is optional), your staff (and your customers too) can park all day with the valet service and not have to worry about moving their car every two or three hours! As a reminder the unlimited parking lots are: • • • • • • Northside Lot – Highway 9 between University Ave. & N. Santa Cruz, behind Chase Bank. Southside Lot - located on So. Santa Cruz Ave., across from the Toll House Hotel Miles Avenue Lot – Miles Ave. intersects University Avenue, one block north of Old Town. Follow the road down across the Creek Trail. For more information on the Museum go to www.computerhistory.org/ What Makes Emails Ineffective, and Even Insulting? Email Tips from Nitpickers’ Nook, October 10th Edition O ver at CBS MoneyWatch, Dave Johnson offers these great tips in his post. Keep emails short. Johnson recommends following the BLUF strategy: Put the Bottom Line Up Front. 1. The big scissors were out again to celebrate the opening of LIV La Vie on September 27. Owner Karen Giordano, Enzo the Golden Retriever (although you can’t see him in the photo lying at Karen’s feet. He’s at the store, welcoming the shoppers!), store manager Elena Saleh and Mayor Steve Rice did the honors assisted by Chamber President Dianne Anderson and Chamber Ambassadors Mika Storz and Carlos Cruz. LIV La Vie is located at 40 N. Santa Cruz Avenue, Suite D. Stop by, say hello and give Enzo a scratch. He’d love to see you! In the first couple of sentences, answer any questions thoroughly, ask the question you need answered, or briefly state what the email is about. Then provide only essential details, preferably in a bulleted list. But… 2. Don’t be terse. Whipping off one- or two-word emails can come across as rude and frustrating, especially if you don’t fully answer a person’s question or offer a well-rounded response. You want to be succinct but you also want to ensure that you are clear. Answer in full sentences and make sure that your replies make sense. 5 3. Take the emotion out of your emails. Before you hit “Send,” count to 10 and re-read your email eliminating any words that might trigger an emotional reaction. Johnson uses the example “Your plan is painfully vague,” noting that painfully can anger the author of the plan. In that example, if you delete the adverb painfully, the criticism is easier to handle. Chamber News The Chamber Announces New President’s Circle Members T he Chamber is proud to announce two new members to the President’s Circle – one a Diamond member, Katsu Los Gatos (opening soon) and the other Sweeney, Mason, Wilson and Bosomworth a new Gold member. There has been a great deal of hammering and sawing on West Main Street as the dream of Katsuhiko Hanamure comes to fruition with the opening of Katsu Los Gatos. The transformation within the historic bank building will be nothing short of amazing. Chef Katsu was born and raised in the small city of Kaseda in the Kagoshima prefecture of Japan and moved to the United States with his family in 1976 and began his culinary career in 1978 as he worked with Japanese Master Chef Sag, Chef Willie Miller and then met Nobuyuki Matshhisa, the renowned chef of Nobu, Matsuhisa and Ubon restaurants around the world in 1986. Chef Nobu saw something special in Katsu and quickly took him under his wing, guiding his career and developing his talent. Since then Chef Katsu has been a part of numerous Matsuhisa and Nobu restaurants working his way up to a Sushi Chef at Matsuhisa Los Angeles and Nobu Los Angeles and then as an Executive Chef of Matsuhisa Athens, Matsuhisa Mykonos and Nobu in Badrutt’s Palace. Chef Katsu has also catered high profile events for the Aubrey Hepburn Foundation, Cartier Foundation, the Red Cross, and has coordinated numerous private parties for top Hollywood celebrities. Today Chef Katsu resides in Los Gatos and is excited to have the opportunity to share his passion for food through Katsu of Los Gatos. Chef Katsu actively researches his ingredients to procure them from the freshest and most sustainable sources and buys locally whenever possible. He invites anyone who wants a new experience, while making lasting memories, to dine at his restaurant. The Chamber looks forward to this new culinary adventure in Los Gatos which will be a wonderful addition to the restaurant scene and destination lure of our town. Katsu Los Gatos is located at 160 W. Main Street. http://www.katsulosgatos.com We welcome and thank Katsu Los Gatos, our newest Diamond Member of the President’s Circle. What a great way to join our community! 6 The law firm of Sweeney, Mason, Wilson & Bosomworth has been representing businesses and individuals in the Bay Area since 1990.
