The island of Noirmoutier is a prominent figure on the Atlantic coast,
with 49 km of exquisite natural landscapes, surrounded by the Ocean,
between Brittany and the southwest.
It is linked to the mainland by the famous Gois, a causeway that floods at high
tide, unique in Europe, or by a modern, toll-free bridge, depending on the tides.
Enjoy 80 km of cycling and 64km footpaths linking the north to the south,
taking in picturesque villages, wild coastlines, endless beaches
and majestic landscapes.
Noirmoutier is a nature reserve, much loved by many species of birds,
and abounds with traditional skills such as salt extraction and oyster
and shellfish banks, which give the island its unique tastes and smells.

Microclimate
The island’s "Mediterranean-style" climate is very mild due to the influence of the Atlantic
Ocean. It gets plenty of sun with 2,100 hours of sunshine per year (including 550 hours
in July and August), which puts Noirmoutier on a par with Carcassonne!
These are ideal conditions for cultivating the island’s famous potatoes, in the sandy soil
fertilised by goémon, a type of seaweed.
The salt marshes are a major site for salt production. The island also has plant species
rarely found on the continent this far north - mimosa and strawberry trees abound
in the Bois de la Chaize.
