Library Link - Orion Township Public Library
Library Link
to the Orion Community
Orion Township Public Library | Fall/Winter 2016
Outside the Lines
The Orion Township Public Library invites the Orion
community to experience the library in a whole new
way! Outside the Lines is a global initiative designed to
reintroduce libraries to their local communities. From
September 11-17, organizations from across the world
will host an event or campaign designed to get people
thinking – and talking – about libraries in a whole
new way. The Orion Township Public Library will be
having a variety of events throughout the week in the
community. Visit http://orionlibrary.org/otl/ for more details.
The Giving Season:
Author/Illustrator Fair
Saturday, December 3,
1:00p-4:00p
More information on page 4.
Community Conversations
As a core community service provider in the Orion community, the Orion Township
Public Library plays a role in bringing the community together and making it better.
In September, the library is hosting two Community Conversations.
Saturday, September 10, 11:00a–12:30p
Orion Township Public Library
825 Joslyn Rd
Tuesday, September 13, 6:00p–7:30p
A Bean To Go
16 W Flint St
The library is hosting these events as an impartial observer for the community’s
benefit and does not have a specific agenda or desired outcome. Each one is a
chance for the library to better understand people’s aspirations for the community,
the concerns they have and what they believe might make a difference in
strengthening the community. Library staff have been trained with the
Harwood Institute.
Please RSVP to Joyce Becker at 248.693.3000 x302 or [email protected].
Did You Know?
Did you know there is a new painting on display at the library? As part
of the Detroit Institute of Arts Inside|Out program, the library received
one of seven pieces of artwork that are installed around Orion Township
for residents to enjoy over the next few months. The Library’s piece of art
is Reeds and Cranes by Suzuki Kiitsu and it is installed in the back of the
Library near the Reading Garden. Other artwork is installed around the
community at Wildwood Amphitheater, the Orion Center, the Pollyanna
Trail, Camp Agawam, the Orion Oaks Bark Park, and Friendship Park. The Library is thrilled to be
participating in the program with the township!

From the Director
As we prepare for a new fiscal year in
2017, the Library Board and I are carefully
reviewing our finances. Although there
may be growth happening in Orion
Township, there is very little growth in
library revenues. This is happening for
a couple reasons – one, it takes time for
revenue increases to show up as incoming
taxes (from new developments), and two,
the Headlee amendments of 1978 create a rollback which slows the rate at
which property tax revenue can increase.
As a result, the library continues to pay careful attention to our finances.
In doing so, the Library Board has decided to contract with Unique
Management Systems, which is a collection agency that specializes in
working with libraries in Michigan and across the country to collect
unpaid debts. We have discovered that we have over $40,000 in
outstanding debts in fines and fees that is owed to the library. Beginning
on September 1, 2016, Unique Management will begin to work with
patrons whose accounts are over $25 for over 30 days. Our goal is to be
able to provide access to the library’s shared collection to all patrons
equally and to be good stewards of tax dollars.
Additionally, the Library Board is trying some
new ways of fundraising. To this end, we have
created a GoFundMe page to collect donations
towards a Bike Bookmobile. This would be a
bicycle that would be able to travel around the
community to check out library items and issue
library cards! To help us with this effort, please visit orionlibrary.org/
bikebookmobile.
We have many wonderful programs happening this fall, many due to the
hard work of the Friends of the Orion Township Library! Please come by
and check us out or visit us online at orionlibrary.org to see all that we
have available.

the scope of our budget. If any of
the items on the list are of interest
to you, perhaps you could donate to the cause. Donating
is easy and can be done right online. You can check out

Libraries for Life
Michigan Libraries
for Life and Gift of
Life Michigan will
take place October 3
through October 8.
The Orion Township
Public Library, along
with many libraries
across the state, will
be participating in this seven-day campaign to inspire
residents to join the Michigan Organ Donor Registry.
The libraries involved in the campaign are located
throughout Michigan, from Houghton to Dearborn and
from South Haven to Detroit. Volunteers and library staff
will answer questions, provide fun give-away items and,
most importantly, help library patrons sign up as organ,
eye, and tissue donors.

Friends Spotlight
This dedicated, hard-working group gathers
in the back room of the library twice a week
to sort the books donated to the Friends for
the gently used book sales held three times
each year. The books are sorted by category
and then boxed up, ready to be moved to
the conference room and displayed for the
next book sale. There are usually more than 400 boxes filled for each sale,
with a total weight of over 16,000 pounds – that’s eight tons! This group of
nine volunteers has been working together for several years. Sally Pelletier,
who is in charge of sales and also takes care of the Twice Told Tales used
book store in the library lobby, has been volunteering for twelve years.
Tom Reuter, a volunteer for nine years, is in charge of the inventory and
keeps everything running smoothly in the back. The group members have
retired from all different occupations, including: office manager, fashion
coordinator, accounting clerk, stay-at-home mom, assistant executive
director, judge, real estate broker, nurse, and home mortgage administrator.
Despite their different backgrounds, they share a love of the library and
working with books, and enjoy the camaraderie of working together. They
range in age from 68 to 86.
The gently used book sales and the Twice Told Tales book store in the library
bring in a huge chunk of the Friends budget, and the book sorters make it
all possible. Thank you Sally, Tom, Ann, Debbie, Irv, Lana, Mary, Neil, and
Skip, we appreciate all that you do!

Be sure to start your shopping with a smile, at smile.amazon.com, and the
Friends will receive a percentage of what you spend.
If you haven’t already, there is still time to sign up for the Kroger rewards
program to benefit the Friends. Once you sign up online, all you need to
do is use your Kroger rewards card when you shop. The Friends receive a
quarterly check from Kroger for a percentage of what our followers spend.
For more information about the amazon smile or Kroger rewards program,

Save the Date! Passport to Spring: Poland will be held at the library on
Saturday, April 29, 2017.
Friends Members Reception
On October 20 at 6:00p the Friends will host a Fall
Reception at the library featuring author Loreen
Niewenhuis, who will speak about her third 1,000
mile lake trek from her book A 1,000 Mile Great
Lakes Island Adventure. The evening will also
feature musical performances by The Night Lights
Jazz Combo, desserts and door prizes. This is a
“members only” event - Friends members will
receive a special invitation. Not a current Friends
