Said the Owl 23 A warm welcome to our autumn programme Once again we hope there is something for everyone and we are very excited that Pam Ayres is making a long overdue return to Radlett in October. Comedy is increasingly popular here and in this season we have Seann Walsh, Mark Steel and Mark Maier. Jazz legend Elaine Delmar returns with her triumphant and highly acclaimed Great American Songbook. For Glenn Miller fans, we have a particular treat from the Nick Ross Orchestra with their Christmas themed programme. I can’t finish without mentioning our Christmas pantomime, which this year is Jack & the Beanstalk. After last year’s runaway success, we have added in further performances this year with a wider spread of starting times. However, early booking is vital as already some shows are sold out. "A VOICE BLESSED BY HEAVEN" BRIAN MATTHEW 4 BOx OffiCE: 01923 859291 Thick As Thieves Theatre Company Shakespeare’s The Tempest Prospero and his daughter have been wronged, set adrift in the Mediterranean by a usurping sibling and a rival king. They have lived on a deserted island for 12 years...well, almost deserted. When fate brings his enemies sailing past the island, Prospero decides to take matters into his own hands. What follows is a story of love, freedom and the consequences of heavy drinking. Witness a company of four actors romping through this magical comedy; following last year’s critically acclaimed and award-nominated run at The Hope Theatre in London, The Tempest will sweep across the country accompanied by relentless energy, breakneck costume changes and sparkling comedy. 5 OCTOBER Thurs 6 Oct 7.30pm Tickets: £14, £12 (conc.), £10 (school groups) www.radlettcentre.co.uk Michael Portillo Life: A game of two halves It took Michael Portillo little more than 10 years to get a seat in the Commons and then rise in power and esteem to a point where he was a favoured leader of his party and possible future PM. A track record like that suggests to many a privileged friend of the rich and famous with little or no understanding of or care for the ordinary citizen. But since leaving the house almost a decade ago Michael has endeared himself to many with his obvious respect for solid workmanship and creative energy. A historian at heart, listen to his extraordinary story and then feel free to question him about it. BOx OffiCE: 01923 859291 Derek Snow Acorah White Seann Walsh One For The Road However dishevelled he may be, the Foster's Comedy Award nominee is also one of the best comics in the country. With a keen observational mind, Seann can spot the absurdity in everything and convert it to perfectly delivered stand-up comedy. You might have seen Seann on TV, but he’s something else live – pacing the stage, working the room and reducing crowds to hysterics. Even if he’d probably rather be at home watching Sky Sports News. “UNQUESTIONABLY THE BEST OBSERVATIONAL COMIC OF HIS GENERATION” Fri 21 Oct 7.30pm Tickets: £14 THE GUARDIAN 9 OCTOBER Age 15+ www.radlettcentre.co.uk Aria Entertainment The MGM Story traces the history of the Golden Age of Song and Dance and tells the tale of how the studio fostered the talents of stars including Judy Garland and Gene Kelly and composers such as Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and many more. Can she change the villager’s opinion of him and more importantly will the Beast ever become a prince again? www.radlettcentre.co.uk Off the Kerb Productions Mark Steel: Who Do I Think I Am It never really bothered me that I’d never met my mum. It never occurred to me I needed to meet her to ‘find out who I was’, as it didn’t seem likely I’d discover I was someone different to who I thought I was. Could it turn out I was three stone lighter than I thought, or I spoke Italian or supported Arsenal or had a fear of Liquorice Allsorts? But after the birth of my own son, I realised it’s quite an event to have a child, and she may well remember giving birth to me, and maybe even the adoption. See Mark Steel in his newest stand up show, a surprising and enthralling story told with aplomb.
