CELEBRATING - Calgary Stampede
CELEBRATING
COMMUNITY
100 Years of the Calgary Stampede
In 2012, we celebrated much more than our Centennial.
We celebrated the early mornings and late nights of our volunteers; the
generosity of our donors; the enthusiasm of our visitors.
We honoured the dedication of crowds that brave the downpours and
blazing heat. The pride of a winning cowboy. And the dignity of a losing one.
We celebrated the amazement in children seeing life in a whole new
way. And the timeless bond between people and animal.
We rode, dressed, dined, toasted and two-stepped. We did it for a young,
energetic city that loves to gather.
We realized the free spirit, the cowboy spirit, within us all. And we rode
alongside the great characters within this epic, one-hundred-year story.
In our 100th year, we celebrated the future of our community. One
bound together by a vital, collective spirit. One fueled by the western
values that grow more relevant in a changing and challenging world.
Above all we celebrated our potential, knowing that we will always be
Greatest Together.

CORE VALUES
AND BRAND
About us
The Calgary Stampede is a volunteer supported, not-for-profit community organization that preserves and promotes
western heritage and values. The Stampede contributes to the quality of life by promoting volunteerism, investing in
youth and agricultural programs, providing world-class event facilities and offering a unique western experience for
the world to enjoy.
Values
At the root of the Calgary Stampede brand are the core values of western hospitality, integrity, pride of place and
commitment to the community. These values connect us to our past, to the present and to our future.
Vision
Our vision is to create a world-class, year-round gathering place in the heart of our great city.
We will achieve our vision by:
1. delivering exceptional experiences that entertain, educate and engage visitors;
2. building inspired spaces to bring our community together to celebrate; and
3. further energizing the brand that has come to define our city.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
AND CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
AND THE CEO
L to R: Vern Kimball, chief executive officer, Michael Casey, president and chairman of the board
Dear Supporters,
Our Centennial year was inspiring and extraordinary. Under the banner of “We’re Greatest Together,” we created a lasting legacy in
the hearts and minds of Calgarians, Albertans and visitors from across Canada and around the world.
During our July festival, we created the experience of a lifetime for a record 1.4 million visitors. And with the many events and
programs we either hosted or supported prior to Stampede, it’s clear that we engaged the community in deeper and broader ways
than ever before.
Our successes are thanks to our community supporters, guests, volunteers, employees and partners. We’re proud of, and humbled
by, what we have accomplished together.
Planning for the Centennial began in 2010 when we brought volunteers and staff together to articulate our Centennial vision. Three
goals emerged that would drive our Centennial plans: to create the experience of a lifetime; to showcase Alberta to the world; and to
build a legacy for our citizens.
Creating the experience of a lifetime
This year, we engaged the community in fresh ways and added new components to our Stampede celebrations. You can read more
about our community engagement activities later in this report, but here are some highlights.
One hundred days before the Centennial Stampede, we invited the city to a public kick-off event over the lunch hour in Olympic
Plaza. More than 6,000 Calgarians joined us on March 29 to share in the Centennial excitement as we made some major Centennial
2
announcements. Guests also experienced a little taste of the Stampede, with a sneak peek performance from Paul Brandt, headliner for
the 2012 TransAlta Grandstand Show.
Our Four Corners events presented by BURNCO took the Stampede out to the city’s four quadrants in May and June. These mini festivals
combined local singing and dancing talent with Stampede favourites to deliver an old-time community fair. They were a great warm-up
to the Centennial Stampede.
The Calgary Stampede, Tourism Calgary and Travel Alberta hosted a public White Hat Drop in Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver on May 9.
The contest saw participants hoping to find one red envelope hidden among dozens of white cowboy hats laid out in public spaces. The
three winners received a once-in-a-century prize package to experience the Calgary Stampede during our Centennial.
To further connect with Albertans, we went on the road and into communities in southern Alberta. Dubbed the “White Hat Round Up”
we supported local events with some Stampede hospitality, a little entertainment, and of course some white cowboy hats!
And on July 6, our Centennial Stampede began with our legendary Parade, led by the 2012 Parade Marshal, the iconic cowboy and poet
Ian Tyson. To mark the strength of our historical relationship with southern Alberta First Nations, the seven chiefs of Treaty Seven were
our Honourary Parade Marshals. To see the chiefs in their full regalia was indeed an honour as we recognized the Treaty Seven tribes’
original participation in 1912.
The special events and programs added to our Centennial Stampede were numerous:
• Each night, after the excitement of the chuckwagon races, the TransAlta Grandstand Show took to the stage. Century was
headlined by Canadian country music superstar Paul Brandt — the first time we’ve had a star headline each night of the Stampede.
• Another crowd-pleaser was the daily RCMP Musical Ride. Locals and visitors got the chance to see the equestrian display daily during the Rodeo.
• A new thrill rollercoaster Outlaw, named after the famed Stampede bull and the longest temporary freestanding zip line in Canada, added to the excitement.
• The Agriculture 100 display allowed visitors to see and learn about every facet of Stampede agriculture — past, present, and future.
• A brand new venue for 2012, Bell Centennial Plaza entertainment stage showcased a diverse collection of fresh Alberta talent every day.
• Garth Brooks helped us celebrate our Centennial with a special performance during our concert series. Needless to say, this was an event that drew fans from across North America and beyond.
• New and only for 2012 — we featured the ENMAX Corral Show TAILS, a celebration of the tenacity of the early settlers and the spirituality and proud heritage of the First Nations of Treaty 7.
• As an exclamation mark to our Stampede weekends, simultaneous fireworks were set off in all four quadrants of the city in recognition of the community support we have received. Light up the City presented by TransAlta was the largest and most sophisticated fireworks event ever held in Canada.
We are still receiving letters and notes from community members telling us how much they loved our Centennial events and how these
events connected neighbours who had never met.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
AND CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
AND THE CEO
Showcasing Alberta to the World
With one time funding support of $5 million from the Government of Canada through the Canadian Tourism Commission and
tremendous support from Travel Alberta, we communicated the Stampede’s Centennial to global audiences.
Amelia Crowshoe, our Calgary Stampede Centennial Indian Princess performed her jingle dance in China and India; The Calgary
Stampede Food truck hit the streets of New York; The Queen and Princesses represented the Calgary Stampede at the world’s largest
travel trade show in Berlin; the Keister Family Fiddlers fiddled through Asia; Harry the Horse hung out with one of our rodeo athletes on
the Great Wall of China; and Prime Minister Stephen Harper kicked off his trade mission in China showcasing our Centennial.
More than 8,900 international travellers booked trips to Canada in the six months leading up to the Centennial celebrations as a direct
result of marketing campaigns in Brazil, Germany, South Korea and the UK.
These incredible opportunities not only showcased the Calgary Stampede in our Centennial year, but highlighted Alberta and Canada as
travel destinations.
Building a Legacy for our Citizens
A number of projects and developments ensured that 2012 would leave a legacy.
Renovations were completed on our Agriculture Building just prior to Stampede and immediately after it concluded, work began on the
new Agrium Western Event Centre. This state-of-the-art, world-class facility will allow us to showcase agricultural events year-round.
A massive and stunning new bronze sculpture, By the Banks of the Bow, was unveiled in June. By the Banks of the Bow serves as an icon
of our equine and agricultural past.
In June, local philanthropist, rancher and businessman, Bill Siebens made a remarkable gift to the Calgary Stampede — an 8,000-acre
ranch in southwestern Alberta. Valued at more than $11 million, it is the largest private gift ever received by the Stampede Foundation.
In operation as a cattle ranch for close to 130 years, the OH Ranch will allow us to engage urban and rural audiences in new and
meaningful ways through educational and outreach programs.
This year also marked the 10th Anniversary of Stampede School. More than 7,000 students, approximately 1,000 parents and 300
teachers have participated in the program since it began in 2002. We continue to create legacy for youth through programs such as the
Stampede School, in which young people develop strong roots in our western culture and heritage through experiences that enhance
personal growth, citizenship, leadership and education.
Looking forward
With a clear sense of purpose, we look forward to the next century of preserving and promoting western heritage and values.
In 2013 we will begin implementing our new Strategic Plan with the vision of creating a year-round, world-class gathering place in the
heart of our great city.
As we embark on the next chapter of our story, we will deliver EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCES that entertain, educate and engage visitors;
we will build INSPIRED SPACES to bring our community together to celebrate; and we will further ENERGIZE THE BRAND that has come
4
to define our city. These three pillars will work together to create the winning conditions for our great people and our great organization
and our community.
In 2014, we will deliver the new Agrium Western Event Centre. And in subsequent years, Riverfront Park and the new Youth Campus
will come to life – engaging community and arts groups.
A green oasis in downtown Calgary, Riverfront Park will be a scenic celebration of western heritage and the environment. Along the
Elbow River, 30 acres are being reclaimed and transformed into a new gathering place for Calgarians and visitors.
Youth Campus will provide young people with a vital creative area focused on developing strong western cultural roots through
education and the performing arts. Here, the Stampede School, The Young Canadians School of the Performing Arts and Calgary
Stampede Showband will share facilities.
Other highlights
While the Centennial events and planning consumed most of our volunteers and many employees, our year-round business had a
tremendous 2012. As a gathering place for all Calgarians, we started the year off with the World Junior Hockey Championships who took
over not only the Scotiabank Saddledome, but also the Corral and the Big Four Building. The Global Petroleum Show and the Calgary
Comic Expo both saw record-breaking attendance. In addition to this, we hosted some fantastic new events including Screamfest, which
moved from Canada Olympic Park and took over the Grandstand and Infield for nearly a month; the Canadian Produce Marketing
Association hosted its 2012 annual convention in the BMO Centre; and we welcomed the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon to Stampede
Park. Monster Trucks returned to the Grandstand in August and we saw the total number of concerts increase over previous years, with
the final two concerts of the year seeing record-breaking food and beverage sales. We saw success with the new management contract
with Penny Lane Entertainment Group. In 2012, the Stampede Casino was rebranded as “Cowboys Casino” and the venue is proving to
be an increasingly popular gathering place focused fun, food and entertainment.
We’re Greatest Together
It is difficult to fully express how fortunate we feel to have worked side-by-side with every member of the Stampede family during
2012. We are grateful for the efforts of our hardworking volunteers and employees. We are strengthened by government and corporate
partners. We are thankful for the support of our guests.
The many successes in our Centennial year have set the bar for the years to come. We are up for the challenge. We look forward to
another 100 years of connecting people and building community through western heritage and values.
Thank you,
Vern Kimball,
Chief Executive Officer
Michael Casey,
President and Chairman of the Board

CALGARY STAMPEDE
IN THE COMMUNITY
One hundred years ago, the goal of the organizers of the first Stampede was to
build and create a community. They thought by celebrating the Wild West, offering
western hospitality and promoting Calgary, Alberta and Western Canada, they
could bring people together to celebrate our heritage.
This unique community is just as alive today as it was at the first Stampede in
1912. From the western themed window paintings in the towering buildings of the
downtown core, to pancake breakfasts feeding thousands at malls and people of all
nationalities and walks of life stampeding around the city in our iconic, cowboy hats,
the Calgary Stampede unites a city and its people in a one-of-a kind 10-day festival.
We are more than The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. We work hard to strengthen
our ties with partner organizations and build community programs the remaining
355 days of the year. Here are some of our community connections:
The Calgary Stampede Foundation
As a charitable organization, the Calgary Stampede Foundation is committed to providing youth with the opportunity to develop
strong roots in their culture and heritage through programs that enhance personal growth, citizenship and education. The Young
Canadians School of Performing Arts, the Calgary Stampede Showband and Stampede School are a few of the programs that benefit
from the Foundation’s annual investment of up to $2.7 million.
Cultural Access Pass
The Institute for Canadian Citizenship’s Cultural Access Pass program provides complimentary admission to new Canadian citizens
so they can take part in more than 1,000 of Canada’s cultural attractions. Participating in this program for the first time in 2012, we
provided 300 new Canadians with the opportunity to experience our Centennial free of charge.
Calgary Local Immigrant Partnership
Citizenship and Immigration Canada and Alberta Human Services began working together in 2012 to strengthen the role local
communities have in helping new immigrants integrate and settle into their new homes. We are proud to be part of this collaborative
community from the ground up and to provide new Calgarians with a hospitable, western welcome.
6
White Hat Round Up
Funded in part by the Government of Alberta, White Hat Round Up provided us with the opportunity to share our Centennial with
more Albertans and to support and give back to four rural communities who have helped contribute to our history and success.
The White Hat Round Up visited the Medicine Hat Spring Rodeo, travelled to the Little Britches Rodeo in High River, took part in
the 25th Pincher Creek Cowboy Gathering and completed its tour at Canada Day Festivals in Canmore and Banff.
Four Corners presented by BURNCO
During the months of May and June 2012, we brought a little taste of the Stampede to communities across the city of Calgary.
Four Corners presented by BURNCO, provided Calgarians with the opportunity to experience some free, family fun and western
hospitality. These mini festivals brought all the Stampede favourites: an old-time community fair with interactive games, rodeo
demonstrations, dancing, giveaways, community presentations and of course, Centennial cake delivered by our very own Cake Posse.
Donations program
Always looking for ways to support positive change in our community, the Stampede provides Stampede-branded merchandise
for local, not-for-profit organizations seeking ways to effect change. In 2012, our Donation program provided Centennial
merchandise for more than 160 southern Alberta organizations whose membership and activities are open to the public.
Western Legacy Awards
One hundred Albertans who exemplify our values of western hospitality, pride of place, integrity and commitment to community
received the honour of a 2012 Western Legacy Award at an event held in October 2012. The names of these outstanding Albertans
will be added to a permanent legacy piece on Stampede Park recognizing all past Western Legacy Award recipients. This project
will be completed in time for Stampede 2013 and will be a lasting tribute of the Award recipients’ accomplishments.
Calgary Stampede Lotteries
In the past 10 years, Calgary Stampede Lotteries have provided more than $22 million to worthwhile community projects
throughout southern Alberta. Proceeds from our lottery programs benefit not-for-profit organizations including the Kinsmen Club of
Calgary, the Rotary Club of Calgary South, the Calgary Stampede Foundation and the Calgary Marching Show Band Association.
Volunteer committees reach outside Stampede Park
In addition to the many programs happening during the 10 days of Stampede, our volunteer committees work year round to bring
western hospitality to the community. In 2012, our volunteer committees took part in more than 500 community events and
celebrations throughout Calgary and southern Alberta by providing their time and expertise.

2012 GOVERNMENT
PARTNERS
A Special Thank You To Our Government Partners
The City of Calgary
The City of Calgary is a long-time partner of the Calgary Stampede, providing our 100-year lease and
support for our credit facilities. This partnership enhanced the community’s ability to participate in
our Centennial celebrations from the 100-Day Kick-Off at Olympic Plaza to Four Corners presented
by BURNCO and Light Up the City presented by TransAlta.
The Government of Alberta
The Government of Alberta, through the Alberta Lottery Fund, supported a number of the
Stampede’s programs and facilities. We received a $9.3 million operating grant as well as $250,000,
which we used to make improvements to facilities, including replacement of the Wrangler time
clock and midway infrastructure upgrades. A community development grant of $5 million from
the Department of Tourism, Parks and Recreation made it possible to expand our Centennial
activities to communities throughout Alberta. The Department of Agriculture and Rural
Development provided a $100,000 annual operating grant for agriculture activities and $8,250
through Alberta Livestock and Meat Association towards educational initiatives. A $25 million
matching grant from Agriculture supported the renovation of our agriculture building, unveiled in
June, and the current construction of the Agrium Western Event Centre that began in July 2012.
The Government of Canada
The Government of Canada, through the Canadian Tourism Commission of Industry Canada,
invested $5 million towards several collaborative initiatives to promote tourism internationally
by featuring the Stampede’s Centennial in key markets. The ENMAX Corral Show TAILS - Three
Horses. One Legend. Our feature Centennial production in the Corral, was supported through
a $55,700 Building Communities through Art and Heritage grant from Canadian Heritage. The
Canadian AgriMarketing program committed $37,025 to profile our international agriculture
initiatives. An investment of $25 million from Infrastructure Canada enabled the renovation our
agriculture building, unveiled in June, and construction of the Agrium Western Event Centre that
began in July 2012.

2012 FINANCIAL REPORTING
Management’s Responsibility for Financial Reporting
The preparation and presentation of the consolidated financial statements and the overall quality of financial reporting
are the responsibility of Management of Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Limited. The consolidated financial
statements have been prepared in accordance with Canadian generally accepted accounting principles and necessarily
include estimates that are based on Management’s best judgments. Information contained elsewhere in the Report to
the Community is consistent, where applicable, with thatcontained in the consolidated financial statements.
Management is responsible for installing and maintaining a system of internal controls to provide reasonable assurance
that assets are safeguarded and that reliable financial information is produced for preparation of consolidated financial
statements. Management believes that the system of internal controls operated effectively in 2011.

2012 FINANCIAL REPORTING
Audit and Finance Committee of the Board of Directors
The Board of Directors is responsible for overseeing Management’s performance of its responsibilities for
financial reporting and internal control. The Board exercises this responsibility with the assistance of the Audit
and Finance Committee of the Board.
The Committee is composed of not fewer than seven (currently eight) members, the majority (currently five) of
whom are directors of Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Limited. The Committee reviews the annual consolidated
financial statements, considers the appropriateness of accounting policies and assesses the overall quality of the
financial reporting. The Committee also reviews and makes recommendations to the Board regarding financial
matters and oversees the process that Management has in place to identify financial reporting risks.
The Committee recommends to the Board the auditors to be appointed by the shareholders and approves
in advance fees for the auditor’s services. Deloitte & Touche LLP was appointed by the shareholders as the
independent auditor in 2011 to conduct an examination and express their opinion on the consolidated financial
statements. The Auditor’s Report outlines the auditor’s opinion and the scope of their examination. The services
provided by the independent auditor are restricted to the audit of the consolidated financial statements, and
audit-related and financial risk services.
The Committee reviews and approves the terms of engagement of the independent auditor, the scope and plan
for the external audit and reviews with the auditor the results of the audit and the Auditor’s Report. The auditor
reports to the Committee. The Committee also discusses with the auditor their independence from Management
and Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Limited and receives written confirmation of their independence.
Management and the auditor attend Committee meetings and each is provided with the opportunity to meet
privately with the Committee. The Committee met nine times in 2011.

INDEPENDENT AUDITOR’S REPORT
To the Shareholders of Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Limited
We have audited the accompanying consolidated financial statements of Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Limited, which comprise the consolidated
statements of financial position as at December 31, 2012, December 31, 2011 and January 1, 2011, and the consolidated statements of operations and
community investment and cash flows for the years ended December 31, 2012 and December 31, 2011, and a summary of significant accounting policies
and other explanatory information.
Management’s Responsibility for the Consolidated Financial Statements
Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these consolidated financial statements in accordance with Canadian
accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations, and for such internal control as management determines is necessary to enable the preparation
of consolidated financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.
Auditor’s Responsibility
Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these consolidated financial statements based on our audits. We conducted our audits in accordance with
Canadian generally accepted auditing standards. Those standards require that we comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform the audit to
obtain reasonable assurance about whether the consolidated financial statements are free from material misstatement.
An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the consolidated financial statements. The
procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the consolidated financial
statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation
and fair presentation of the consolidated financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not
for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of
accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the
consolidated financial statements.
We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained in our audits is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.
Opinion
In our opinion, the consolidated financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Calgary Exhibition and Stampede
Limited as at December 31, 2012, December 31, 2011 and January 1, 2011, and the results of its operations and its cash flows for the years ended
December 31, 2012 and December 31, 2011 in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations.

1. Purpose of the Organization
The purpose of Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Limited (“the Calgary Stampede”) is to preserve and promote western heritage and
values. The Calgary Stampede is incorporated under the Companies Act of Alberta as a not-for-profit organization and is exempt from
income taxes under the Canadian Income Tax Act. The directors of the Calgary Stampede are elected or appointed volunteers who
cannot be paid in any form for their services under its by-laws. The shareholders of the Calgary Stampede, who are also volunteers,
cannot receive any dividends, nor can the shares appreciate in value. Shares can neither be sold nor held by persons outside of the
Province of Alberta nor in the estates of deceased shareholders.
2. Adoption of a new accounting framework
During the year ended December 31, 2012, the Calgary Stampede adopted the new Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit
organizations (the “new standards”) issued by the Accounting Standards Board of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants
(“CICA”) and set out in Part III of the CICA Handbook. In accordance with Section 1501 of Part III of the CICA Handbook, First-time
adoption, (“Section 1501”), the date of transition to the new standards is January 1, 2011 and the Calgary Stampede has prepared
and presented an opening consolidated statement of financial position at the date of transition to the new standards. This opening
consolidated statement of financial position is the starting point for the entity’s accounting under the new standards. In its opening
consolidated statement of financial position, under the recommendations of Section 1501, the Calgary Stampede:
(a) recognized all assets and liabilities whose recognition is required by the new standards;
(b) did not recognize items as assets or liabilities if the new standards do not permit such recognition;
(c) reclassified items that it recognized previously as one type of asset, liability or component of community investment, but are
recognized as a different type of asset, liability or component of community investment under the new standards; and
(d) applied the new standards in measuring all recognized assets and liabilities.
In accordance with the requirements of Section 1501, the accounting policies set out in Note 3 have been consistently applied to all years
presented and adjustments resulting from the adoption of the new standards have been applied retrospectively, excluding cases where
optional exemptions available under Section 1501 have been applied. No such exemptions have been applied.

2,481 (2,481) (452) 6,871 3,938 Explanations of adjustments
a) Employee future benefits
As permitted by CICA Handbook Section 3461, the Calgary Stampede has elected to use the immediate recognition approach for its
defined benefit plans and to include all actuarial gains and losses and past service costs incurred in the cost of the plans for the year.
The adjustments resulted in removing an accrued pension benefit asset of $3,684 and recording a pension liability of $5,189 as at
January 1, 2011 and removing an accrued pension benefit asset of $4,383 and recording a pension liability of $6,972 as at December 31,
2011 as a result from the retrospective application of this method. These changes are offset by adjustments to Community investment.
b) Interest rate swap
The new standards require that when hedge accounting has been applied and continues to be applied under the new standards,
the corresponding derivative should be measured at fair value at inception, in which the value is $Nil, and subsequently using the
amortized cost method. As a result, all deferred losses and gains arising on the derivatives that were previously reported as if they were
assets or liabilities must be eliminated. Accordingly, the interest rate swap liability aggregating $8,422 as at January 1, 2011 and $15,293
as at December 31, 2011 has been eliminated from the consolidated statement of operations with the offsetting increase to community
investment in the amount of $8,422 as at January 1, 2011 and $6,871 for the year ended December 31, 2011.

2. Adoption of a new accounting framework (continued)
The adoption of the new standards has impacted the operating activities section of the consolidated statement of cash flows for the
year ended December 31, 2011. Accordingly it has been adjusted to reflect, as appropriate, the above changes to the reconciling items
in determining cash provided from operating activities.
3. Significant accounting policies
The consolidated financial statements of the Calgary Stampede have been prepared by Management in accordance with Canadian
accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations, Part III of the CICA Handbook. A precise determination of many assets and
liabilities is dependent upon future events and consequently, the preparation of periodic financial statements necessarily involves
the use of estimates and approximations. Areas subject to estimation include valuation of accounts receivable and inventory,
useful lives of tangible capital assets, impairment of long-lived assets, accrued liabilities, employee future benefits and potential
contingencies. Those estimates also affect the disclosure of contingencies at the date of the financial statements and the reported
amounts of assets, liabilities, revenues and expenses. Actual results could differ from those estimates. The consolidated financial
statements have been prepared within the framework of the accounting policies summarized below.
(a) Basis of Presentation:
The consolidated financial statements include the accounts of the Calgary Stampede, its whollyowned subsidiaries, Weadick
Properties Limited (“Weadick”), Calgary Stampede (GP) Inc., Calgary Stampede Trust (the “Trust”), in which the Calgary Stampede
controls the Trust as its sole beneficiary, and its 50% interest in Stampede Entertainment Inc. (“SEI”).
The purpose of Weadick is to acquire lands for future Calgary Stampede expansion and development purposes. Weadick is
incorporated under the Alberta Business Corporations Act as a not-for-profit organization and is exempt from income taxes under
the Canadian Income Tax Act.
The purpose of Calgary Stampede (GP) Inc. (0.01% general partner) and Calgary Stampede Trust (99.99% limited partner) is to
own the Stampede (Casino) Limited Partnership which operates the Stampede Casino and its ancillary operations, including food,
beverage and entertainment. Calgary Stampede (GP) Inc. is incorporated under the Alberta Business Corporations Act as a for-profit
entity and is subject to income taxes under the Canadian Income Tax Act. The Trust was established through a trust agreement in
which the Calgary Stampede is the sole beneficiary of the Trust and the Trust’s annual taxable income is distributed to it.
The purpose of SEI is to present various western and Calgary Stampede related entertainment during the annual Stampede festival
and throughout the year via television, movies and live performance. SEI is incorporated under the Alberta Business Corporations
Act as a for-profit entity and is subject to income taxes under the Canadian Income Tax Act. The Calgary Stampede has joint control
of SEI, and therefore proportionately consolidates SEI’s operations into the results of the Calgary Stampede. The Calgary Stampede
is associated with the Calgary Stampede Foundation (“the Foundation”) due to its ability to appoint the majority of the board of
directors of the Foundation. The Calgary Stampede has elected to disclose all pertinent financial information of the Foundation in the
notes to these consolidated financial statements. Accordingly, the Foundation’s financial accounts have not been consolidated with
those of the Calgary Stampede. The Foundation has the primary objective of establishing programs for the benefit of young residents
of Southern Alberta to advance their knowledge and understanding of the history, heritage, traditions and culture of Alberta. The
Foundation is incorporated under the Companies Act of Alberta as a not-for-profit organization and is a registered charity under the
Canadian Income Tax Act and accordingly, is not subject to income taxes.

3. Significant accounting policies (continued):
b) Cash and Short-term Deposits:
Cash and short-term deposits comprise cash on hand, demand deposits and deposits held in trust, having a maturity of three
months or less from the date of purchase, and are recorded at fair market value. Investment revenue is recognized when it is
receivable.
(c) Inventory:
Inventory is recorded at the lower of cost and net realizable value. Cost is determined on a weighted average basis, and net
realizable value is determined using estimated selling prices less corresponding costs. The estimated selling price takes into
account management’s best estimate of the most probable set of economic conditions.
(d) Tangible capital assets and amortization:
Buildings and equipment are stated at cost less accumulated amortization. Major overhauls and improvements are
capitalized, while normal repairs and maintenance are expensed as incurred. Park development projects include the design
and construction costs incurred on a number of projects related to the Calgary Stampede’s expansion plans. Interest incurred
on debt specifically obtained to finance capital projects is capitalized during the construction period. Amortization is provided
on a straight-line basis at rates designed to amortize the assets over their estimated useful lives.
Title to the land on which certain portions of Stampede Park is located is vested in The City of Calgary and is used by the
Calgary Stampede under a nominal long-term lease expiring in the year 2060, with an additional 50-year renewal term.
Lands owned directly by the Calgary Stampede are recorded at cost and are held for Calgary Stampede expansion and
development purposes.
(e) Impairment of long-lived assets:
Long-lived assets are tested for recoverability whenever events or changes in circumstances indicate that their carrying
amount may not be fully recoverable. An impairment loss is recognized when and to the extent that the carrying value of an
asset exceeds the total undiscounted cash flows expected from its use and eventual disposition.
(f)Advances on future events:
Advances on future events represent funds received in advance for events including the Stampede festival, conventions and
trade shows and facilities, building and ice rentals. Revenue from such events is recognized as income in the period in which
the events take place.
Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Limited
Notes to consolidated financial statements.

3. Significant accounting policies (continued):
(g) Employee future benefits
The Calgary Stampede has a number of defined benefit pension plans as well as a defined contribution pension plan that
provide pension benefits to most of its employees. The defined benefit pension plans are based on years of service and final
average salary. Pension benefit payments are not automatically increased for inflation.
The cost of pension benefits earned by employees is actuarially determined using the projected benefit method prorated on
service and Management’s best estimate of expected plan investment performance, salary escalation and retirement ages of
employees. Plan obligations are discounted using current market interest rates and plan assets are presented at fair value.
Actuarial gains (losses) arise from the difference between the actual long-term rate of return and the expected rate of return
on plan assets, the difference between actual experience and actuarial assumptions used to determine the accrued benefit
obligation and from changes in actuarial assumptions.
The Calgary Stampede accounts for its defined pension plans using the immediate recognition approach. Under this approach,
the Calgary Stampede determines the accrued benefit obligation based on an actuarial report prepared for funding purposes.
The Calgary Stampede recognizes the net amount of the accrued benefit obligation and the fair value of the plan assets in the
consolidated statement of financial position. Actuarial gains and losses are included in the cost of the plan for the year.
(h) Financial Instruments:
Financial instruments are recorded at fair value on initial recognition. Free-standing derivative instruments that are not in a
qualifying hedging relationship and equity instruments that are quoted in an active market are subsequently recorded at fair
value. All other financial instruments are recorded at cost or amortized cost, unless management has elected to record at fair
value. The Calgary Stampede has not elected to carry any such financial instruments at fair value. Transaction costs related
to financial instruments measured at fair value are expensed as incurred. For all other financial instruments, the transaction
costs are added to the carrying value of the asset or netted against the carrying value of the liability and are then recognized
over the expected life of the instrument using the straight-line method. Any premium or discount related to an instrument
measured at amortized cost is amortized over the expected life of the item using the straight-line method and recognized
in the excess of revenue over expenses as interest income or expense. With respect to financial assets measured at cost or
amortized cost, the Calgary Stampede recognizes an impairment loss, if any, when it determines that a significant adverse
change has occurred during the period in the expected timing or amount of future cash flows. When the extent of impairment
of a previously written-down asset decreases and the decrease can be related to an event occurring after the impairment was
recognized, the previously recognized impairment loss shall be reversed in the period the reversal occurs.
(i) Interest Rate Swaps:
Interest rate swaps (“swaps”) are utilized to manage interest rate risk on the Calgary Stampede’s long-term debt. The Calgary
Stampede does not enter into financial instruments for trading or speculative purposes. The swaps are considered to be
effective accounting hedges, both at inception and over the term of the instrument. The swap agreements provide for the
periodic exchange of payments (without the exchange of the notional principal amount upon which the payments are based),
which are recorded as an adjustment of interest expense on the hedged debt instrument. The related amount payable to or

3. Significant accounting policies (continued):
(j) Grants and Contributions:
The Calgary Stampede follows the deferral method of accounting for grants and contributions. Unrestricted contributions are
recognized as income when received or receivable. Amounts externally restricted for capital purposes are initially recorded as “Deferred
contributions” when received or receivable and subsequently included in income in the same proportion as the amortization of the related
assets for which the capital contributions were expended. Amounts that relate to operating expenditures of a future period are deferred
until the related expenditures are incurred.
(k) Revenue Recognition:
Revenue, with the exception of grants and contributions, is recognized when persuasive evidence of an arrangement exists, delivery has
occurred, the price is fixed or determinable and collection is reasonably assured.
(l) Volunteer Services:
A substantial number of unpaid volunteers make significant contributions of their time in developing and delivering Calgary Stampede
programs. The value of this contributed time is not reflected in the financial statements since objective measurement or valuation is
indeterminable.
(m) Supplies and Services in Kind:
The Calgary Stampede received supplies and services from suppliers in exchange for various sponsorship benefits, such as advertising or
promotion. These transactions are recorded when a fair value can be reasonably estimated and the supplies and services are used in the
normal course of operations and would otherwise have been purchased. The contributions of supplies and services are reported in Gross
Revenue, while the supplies and services being provided are reported in Direct Expenses.
Included in Gross Revenue and Direct Expenses in the Consolidated Statement of Operations is
$1,753 for supplies and services in kind received (December 31, 2011 - $1,547).
(n) Government remittances recoverable and/or payable
At December 31, 2012, the Calgary Stampede had government remittances payable of $75 (December 31, 2011 - $510, January 1, 2011 - $184).
(o) Reclassification of prior year balances
Certain of the prior year’s balances, specifically gross revenue and direct expenses in the consolidated statements of operations and
community investment, have been reclassified to conform to the current year’s financial statement presentation. The net balances of
these amounts remain unchanged.

During fiscal 2012, the Calgary Stampede entered into a land swap transaction with the Foundation. Given that the land being exchanged
with the Foundation had been recorded at historical cost and the transaction was recorded at the exchange amount, the Calgary Stampede
recognized a gain aggregating $9.6 million.
Also during fiscal 2012, land known as ‘Ogden’ was sold for net proceeds of $8.7 million. This land was purchased by the Calgary Stampede in
2007 and leasehold improvements were made, resulting in an aggregated cost of $11.6 million. After all costs incurred pertaining to the sale of
Ogden, a loss of $2.9 million was recognized.
During 2011, a parcel of land, Ramsay Exchange, was purchased for $26.1 million; the land was valued at $19.9 million and the onsite buildings
at $6.2 million. A majority of the buildings are occupied by third parties and are generating rental income. Ramsay Exchange is strategically
located providing additional storage for the Calgary Stampede in close vicinity to its main operations.

15. Calgary Stampede Foundation (continued):
The Calgary Stampede contributed $864 (December 31, 2011 - $315) in donations to the Foundation.
The Calgary Stampede conducted business transactions with the Foundation to assist the Foundation in delivering its programs and to host
fundraising events. Revenue earned from these transactions totaled $369 (December 31, 2011 - $443). These transactions are in the normal
course of operations and have been measured at the exchange amount, which is the amount of consideration established and agreed to by the
related parties.
The net payable to the Foundation at December 31, 2012 is $507 (December 31, 2011 – net receivable of $89, January 1, 2011 – net receivable of
$149). The amount due is non-interest bearing and has no specified terms of repayment.
The Calgary Stampede has committed to a sponsorship agreement with the Foundation to provide funds for a five year period beginning in
2009. The total sponsorship commitment is $550, with $115 contributed in 2012 (December 31, 2011 - $110).
16. Contingency:
In the normal course of operations, the Calgary Stampede is involved, from time to time, in various legal claims. Management believes the
exposure to current claims would not have a material impact on the financial position or operating results of the Calgary Stampede.
