By the 1980s All year long, the Calgary Stampede celebrates art and western heritage through the bronze sculptures and historical murals at Stampede Park. If you start your walk outside the Stampede Park gates, you will see two great pieces of art in front of the Cowboys Casino. 1. Courage and Thunder 2. The rider in full dimension, together with the bull’s portrait, are linked by a minimalist line, showing the rider’s risk. This sculpture’s low and high relief work captures the essence of the chuckwagon teams stampeding and pounding together in close competition. The sculptor’s approach is minimalistic using negative space to probe both imagination and intellect of the viewer. This bronze sculpture, appropriately titled “Roundup,” depicts the western heritage that makes this part of Canada truly unique and illustrates the importance of the agriculture and ranching industries in Calgary and southern Alberta. 4. Stampede Park Entrance Artist: Rocky Barstad Installed: 1997 Location: Victoria Park LRT Station Donors: Shell Canada and Calgary Stampede Type of art: Mural The theme for this mural is the 1950s and 60s entrance to Stampede Park. The color and excitement was heightened by the location of Indian Village and its traditional tipis in Sun Tree Park. 5. Early Chuckwagon Race Artist: Rocky Barstad Installed: 1998 Location: BMO Centre (West wall) Donors: Calgary Stampede Type of art: Mural Cowboys Casino Moving toward the BMO Centre, there are bronzes and murals. Artist: Doug Driediger Installed: 1996 Location: Stampede Corral (East upper wall) Type of art: Mural This mural takes you back to the 1912 and 1919 Stampede Parades showing teams of buffalo, mounted bands and parade marshal Cappy Smart. By the Banks of the Bow 12 13 Rodeo Office 11 9 Artist: Keith Holmes Installed: 1999 Location: BMO Centre (South) Donors: Calgary Stampede Type of art: Mural 10 12. 1901 Bull Sale Artist: Keith Holmes Installed: 2000 Location: Agriculture Building (Northwest corner), near Saddledome (To be re-installed Fall 2012) Donors: Alberta Cattle Breeders Association, Calgary Stampede Type of art: Mural Walking south to the Big Four Building, you will see a mural and volunteer tribute. 9. Life on the Range (volunteer fountain) 8. Cyclone into the Sunset Artist: Stan Phelps Installed: 1996 Location: Big Four Building (North side) Donors: Shell Canada, Calgary Stampede Type of art: Mural This mural depicts the 1912 Stampede Rodeo ending under the lights of cars which surrounded the Infield. Tom Three Person, a Blood Indian, rode the outlaw horse, Cyclone, to a standstill becoming the first saddle bronc champion in Calgary. Artists: Bob Spaith and Rich Roenisch, Longview, Alberta Installed: 2012 Location: West side of Agriculture Building, Stampede Park Donors: Carthy Foundation, Coril Holdings Ltd., Friends of Smithbilt Hats Inc. Type of art: Bronze sculpture As one of the largest pieces of art in North America, 15 horses and two cowboys, blend historical and modern day images into a largerthan-life story that reflects the spirit of Calgary – from the influence of the Bow River to the significant role of the cowboy and the free spirit of the western horse. This mural depicts that mounted ride in the Horse Show Arena at Victoria Park. The piece was commissioned to recognize the 125th anniversary of the North West Mounted Police “Ride West,” as well as the 85th anniversary of the Mounted Ride’s first appearance in Calgary. 6. The Bronc Twister This statue is based on a drawing done by well-known California artist, Edward Borein which was the inspiration of the 1919 “Victory Day” Stampede celebrating the end of World War I. It was presented to the Calgary Stampede on the occasion of the 75th Anniversary of the Province of Alberta. 2 Olympic Way 1 E ve S 12 A This mural depicts the first chuckwagon races in 1923 and was commissioned in honour of the 75th anniversary of the GMC Rangeland Derby. Artist: Rich Roenisch Installed: 1980 Location: BMO Centre (Southwest corner) Donors: W.W. Bill Siebens Type of art: Bronze sculpture 14. The Dream Artist: Penny Corradine Installed: 1997 Location: Stampede Corral (East lower wall) Type of art: Mural On the Stampede Corral there are two historical representations of major Stampede events. 3. Roundup Artist: Linda Stewart Installed: 2000 Location: BMO Centre (Northwest corner) Donors: Government of Canada’s Millennium Partnership program, Province of Alberta, Calgary Stampede Type of art: Bronze sculpture 15. Early Stampede Parade Artist: James Marshall Installed: 1995 Location: Big Four Building (East side) Donors: Calgary Stampede Type of art: Mixed This fountain was built as a tribute to the dedicated volunteers of the Calgary Stampede. It is their tireless work through numerous committees and community spirit that enables us to maintain the many programs of the Stampede including those devoted to youth and to the preservation of our western heritage. These programs are an integral part of the Stampede commitment to the citizens of Calgary and Southern Alberta. Moving to the Grandstand you’ll find a bronze sculpture. 10. A salute to Dennis E. Massey Artist: Sandy Farr Installed: 2007 Location: Grandstand (North end) Donors: Lesley Massey, Dennis Massey’s wife Type of art: Bronze sculpture From 1996 – 2002, Superintendent, Dennis Massey volunteered countless hours to proudly walk Stampede Park interacting with the public on behalf of the R.C.M.P. and its initiative to enhance community policing. This mural was created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1901 bull sale. Sixty-four head of purebred cattle were sold through the first bull sale held by the Territorial Purebred Cattle Breeders Association on April 12, 1901. S.A. Paisley of Lacombe was the auctioneer for the sale held at Victoria Park’s Frontier Stables. The average price was $85.17. 11. International Seed Grain and Hay Exposition Artist: Penny Corradine Installed: 1997 Location: Stampede Corral (East lower wall) Type of art: Mural This mural shows the early seed and hay exhibitions hosted in Calgary since 1886. Walk north toward the Agriculture Building and enjoy a mural as well as our newest sculpture.
