Sunrise Rotary spiffs up Memorial’s garden
The Surry Sunrise
Rotary Club recently
had a work day to
clear out the Veteran’s
Memorial garden prior
to the regular spring
planting by the city
landscaping staff. The
club has sponsored the
flowers for the memorial
for several years, and
decided this year to put
on their work gloves
and participate in
beautifying that part of
our downtown area.
Michella Huff of the
city’s parks and grounds
staff told them that she
welcomed their help in
preparing the gardens
for planting. The club
members met on a
recent Saturday
morning and, under
Huff’s directions,
worked to pull out the
old flowers, weed the
plant beds, tie off the
daffodils, and clean the
fountain.
The city staff then
brought in the new
flowers early the
following week and
replanted the garden,
ensuring a beautiful
area for local residents
and visitors to see for
the rest of the summer.

Surry student athletes honored at ceremony
Surry Community College
student-athletes were honored
and recognized on May 5,
during the Athletic Awards
Ceremony held at the SheltonBadgett North Carolina Center
for Viticulture & Enology. SCC
President Dr. David Shockley
welcomed the student-athletes,
parents and guests and during his speech emphasized
the values and life lessons that
are gained by participating in
athletics. He also commended
the student-athletes for all of
their efforts and commitment
to community service projects
during the academic year.
The volunteer work by the
Surry softball team was recognized as Champions for the
Community in the National
Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Review for
the second consecutive year.
The national publication
acknowledged the team for its
volunteer work with Operation
Christmas Child.
Other community service
highlights include the baseball
team assisting with the Surry
County Sheriff’s Association
Food Drive and Delivery for
the ninth consecutive year and
the volleyball team hosting the
Dig Pink event for the sixth
consecutive year to raise funding and awareness for breast
cancer.
“All of our student-athletes
participate in community projects throughout the academic
year. Many of the teams do
more than one charitable effort,
which gives these student-athletes the opportunity to make a
difference in their communities
and serve as role models,” said
Surry Athletic Director Mark
Tucker.
Surry awarded the StudentAthlete of the Year to sophomore golfer Gatlin Hiatt of
North Surry High School. Hiatt
has been a volunteer Young
Life Leader for the past three
years, an active member in
her youth group and performs
in the Praise Band at Antioch
Baptist Church.
While at Surry Community
College the last two years, she
has been a Dean’s List and
President’s List student posting
a 3.61 grade point average and
being inducted into Phi Theta
Kappa. Hiatt has also served as
a College Ambassador this past
academic year. She has worked
in the marketing department
at Surry and also completed an
internship with SouthData in
Mount Airy. Hiatt was one of
three winners of the redesign
of the Surry
Cellars wine labels, and the
W. Byron Wolfe Tri-County
Charitable Foundation selected
her logo design in a competitive process. In addition, she
was named Directors Choice
Winner for Best Original Love
Song for Paramount Songs. On
the golf course, Hiatt has been
named All-Region for the past
two years, while also qualifying each year for the Women’s
National Tournament. The past
two seasons, she has received
the Coach’s Award in golf.

was rewarded on May
7 for its recent win at
regional competition.
Shoals PTO president
Tom Pace presented each
member of the eBOB
team with a $50 Barnes
& Noble gift card to
celebrate their regional
win.
On May 14 Shoals’
eBOB team members
were able to go on a field
trip to celebrate the first
place regional win and
use their gift cards from
the PTO at Barnes and
Noble. Their day started
with a trip to Laura
Hardy Creative in Pilot
Mountain where they
painted a picture as a
keepsake.
Then they traveled to
Olive Garden for lunch.
Barnes and Noble was
the next stop where they
were treated like kings
and queens with a free
drink and snack from
Starbucks and were able
to spend their $50 gift
cards awarded by the
PTO. And finally a stop
by Krispy Kreme for a
free drink and doughnut.

SCC students graduate from nursing school
Forty Surry Community College students recently graduated from the Associate Degree
Nursing program.
The Nursing Pinning and
Graduation Ceremony was
held May 14, at Temple Baptist
Church in Mount Airy. Kiena
Williams, nurse educator at
SCC, was the guest speaker.
She reflected upon situations
that graduates might encounter
in nursing. She also presented
the pins.
SCC President Dr. David
Shockley talked to the graduates about their bright futures
in healthcare and congratulated
them on achieving the academic achievement. Shockley also
presented the diplomas. Dr.
Michael B. Miller, SCC dean
of Business, Technologies &
Health Sciences, performed the
presentation of the graduates.
Dr. Yvonne Johnson, SCC associate dean of Health Sciences,
addressed the audience with

The Surry nursing program
graduates provide nursing care
to clients at different points in
a patient’s lifetime in a variety
of settings. Students can
choose to complete the ADN or
Associate Degree in Nursing,
which is a two-year program
enabling students to sit for
the examination
leading to licensure as a
registered nurse. Currently
licensed practical nurses
(LPNs) can also choose
to complete the LPNADN program, which is a
three semester program
enabling students to sit for
the examination leading to
licensure as a registered nurse.
