Frances Bolick named NHSC Volunteer of the Year

F
rances Bolick, a four-year volunteer at Northern Hospital of Surry
County, received the Volunteer of
the Year Award during the hospital’s annual Volunteer Appreciation Banquet at
Cross Creek Country Club.
Carroll Vick, president of the volunteers. welcomed the group with Sandra
White, chaplain, giving the invocation.
Bill James, CEO, commended the volunteers for their dedicated services.
Nineteen new volunteers were recognized
by Anita Hoisington, membership chairman.
Kaye Puckett, director of Volunteer Services, assisted Vick in presenting the awards
following a delightful dinner.
Puckett noted that Frances Bolick has
been a volunteer since 2007, learning all positions and areas in the hospital. She went on
to say that Bolick has worked every day of
the week and lately greets patients and families in Day Surgery on Friday mornings. She
is willing to pinch hit for others who cannot
come on a short notice.
Frances and her husband, Ben, live in
White Plains and they have two children
and two grandchildren.
A retired teacher, she is a member of
the Retired Teachers Association and an
auxiliary fireman at White Plains. She has
organized many blood drives for the
American Red Cross.
She has been the recording clerk for
more than 40 years in her local church and
has held many offices in the North Carolina Yearly Meetings of the Friends Church.
Also she is an active member of the choir.
She is always involved in the White
Plains Community activities.
As Bolick accepted the engraved
plaque, Puckett said, “Frances Bolick you
are a very deserving recipient of our Volunteer of the Year Award.”

were Lillian Gunell and Ted Nelson.

In Concord recently, Dance Works Studio competed against dozens of dance
studios from around the state and
area for top honors at Showstopper,
the largest dance competition in the
country. Dance Works brought home
the title of first place overall teen

Bridgett and Wayne Pike at Holly

Betty Scott celebrates her 93rd birthday
etty Scott turned 93 on April 7. She
B
was honored with a birthday party
on Saturday, April 10, at the Church of
God of Prophecy in Mount Airy. She arrived at the church with her great-niece,
Bridgett Gibbs and her husband, Bill of
Salisbury, to find an excited crowd of loving family and friends of more than 100
people. To her amazement, her nephew,
Jimmy Edwards and his family from
Forked River, N.J., were there to greet her.
Many of the guests brought a beautiful
rose to make a wonderful arrangement.
Preston and Shelby Bobbitt and Melvin
and Gloria Snow entertained with gospel
music.
Betty lives independently in the home
that belonged to her parents, the late Jordan and Easter Edwards. She is the last
surviving of 11 children. She attended
Franklin Elementary School and worked
in the dry-cleaning business more than 50
years. Her former employers, Roger and
Vicky Routh of Hutchens Cleaners, along
with their son, Aaron, and grandson, Garrett, were there to help celebrate. Several
nieces and nephews live near her and love
to drop in several times a day to eat her
good cooking.
Out of town guests included nieces and
nephews, Jimmy and Pat Edwards along
with their sons, Daniel and Jeffery Edwards and his family of Forked River; Bill
and Bridgett Gibbs of Salisbury; Marsha
Marcella of Huntersville; Ida McDonough
and her son Terry Key; and Mary Farmer
all of Winston-Salem; Billy and Matt
Parker and their families of Greensboro
and Bob and Ruth Levesque of Sophia.
Betty received many nice gifts and fully enjoyed the love and fellowship of her
family and friends. She believes family
and friends are the most important things
in life. The entire day was filled with excitement and Betty is already looking forward to next year.
