Mechatronics Degree Lands Student Job Before Graduation
C.J. Rice graduated with a Mechatronics degree and a Welding diploma from Surry Community College on May 14. Before walking across the stage
at the Commencement Ceremony, Rice had already accepted a job offer as an Automation Technician at Ashley Furniture. He is standing beside the
LABVOLT trainers used in Mechatronics classes to teach switching and electrical control of motor circuits.
Armed with a Mechatronics degree and a Welding diploma from
Surry Community College, C.J. Rice, 21, landed a job as an Automation Technician before he even walked across the stage to graduate.
Rice graduated on May 14, and then began working at Ashley Furniture in Advance, N.C., on May 23. On top of those accomplishments,
he has no student loan debt, thanks to financial aid and smart money management.
Rice began taking classes at Surry Community College feeling like
the majority of new college students. He had just graduated from
North Davidson High School, and he was not really sure what he
wanted to study. He started taking classes in the Associate in Arts
program, while he was also playing baseball. Later on, he decided to
focus solely on his educational pursuits and then moved to Industrial Systems, a program that was later revamped into the Mechatronics program.
“By taking Industrial Systems, I learned that I would get to work
with robots, processes and welding. I wasn’t big on welding at first.
The Industrial System class had a welding class that was required.
That’s what hooked me into welding, and I ended up getting a welding diploma,” Rice said.
Through the Mechatronics classes, Rice worked with thermal
imaging and ultrasound guns and learned how these devices help
technicians troubleshoot and prevent maintenance problems. He
also learned how to program PLCs or Programmable Logic Controls.
PLCs make different processes run such as elevator buttons, lights,
and motor starters. He also used multi-meters to test electrical circuits.
2
“It’s fun and challenging. I like to troubleshoot and make processes work correctly. I like seeing the behind-the-scenes view of how
things work,” Rice said. “We had simulations with PLC class. It was
really cool. I enjoyed it.”
Rice described Mechatronics as it relates to the industrial world.
“It’s mechanical and electrical engineering. The mechanical side is
about gear drives, chain drives, belt drives, lubrication and bearings.
You learn about thickness of oil and agents to make the mechanics
run smooth and last a long time. Mechanical is the foundation of
mechatronics,” Rice said. “The electrical side is what I was drawn to
because you learn about PLCs and how to hardwire and the rules of
electricity.
“It applies to everything, and that’s what I love about it,” Rice said.
“If a dog chews the electrical cord to my lamp, I can fix it instead of
throwing it away. I have become a lot handier. It’s just so much fun.”
Mechatronics students fine tune their troubleshooting skills in
class.
“The instructors will throw problems at you that you will have to
figure out how to fix. There were written tests along with hands-on
lab tests. It was challenging and really fun at the same time. The
instructors are great. You learn something new every day in Mechatronics.”
Machining also goes along with Mechatronics.
“I learned how to program a CNC machine, experienced AUTO
CAD and Mastercam along with using lathes and end mills. They
teach you the old school machining, so you can appreciate CNC
more. I learned how to fix and make certain parts. I really enjoyed
machining,” Rice said.
Rice recalled that Doug Slate, the Lead Instructor for Mechatronics, said that learning is life long and that you learn something new
everyday.
“He is right. I came to Surry Community College and didn’t know
anything about Mechatronics and mechanical engineering, robotics, electrical engineering, welding and machining. Then, everything
started to click at the end of my studies and how all this works together. Now I am applying what I learned to every day things like the
mechanics in my new car.”
Mechatronics students need to like to get their hands dirty and
not be timid. You learn OSHA 30 standards and how to be safe with
everything you are doing, Rice added.
“I thought my time at Surry was great. Everything I needed was
here. I walked to school every day. I ate at the Knights’ Grill every
day. I worked in the bookstore and the gym to make money,” Rice
said.
Rice offers some advice to students.
“You have to want to learn. You can’t be lazy,” he said. “If you get
an advisor, and you want to do this, it will happen. Surry just made
things so easy for me. I got a great education at Surry with no debt,
and now I have a job in a field that I love.”
As a part of his new job at Ashley Furniture, Rice has already gone
to Mississippi to provide welding support. His company is also helping him get his passport approved with plans to send him to Vietnam and Germany to work.

Surry Graduate Fulfills Lifelong Dream of Becoming Architect
Marty Needham visits the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco as a part of a While in a Tectonics and Craft class taught by Frank Harmon at NC
studio class based on skyscrapers taught by Dr. Wayne Place. Needham said the State, Needham built a model of Peter Zumthor’s building called
bridge is one of the greatest engineering accomplishments that he has ever seen. The Bruder Klaus Chapel, which is located in Germany. Needham
was able to visit the actual chapel while he was studying abroad.
Persistence and motivation enabled a Surry Community College
graduate the opportunity that he had longed for his whole life.
When Marty Needham would spend the night with his buddies
as a young boy, he and his friends would build a club house and
everyone would have a role; Needham always volunteered to be
the architect.
Needham, now 46 and a recent graduate with a Master of Architecture from North Carolina State University, had always wanted
to be an architect. He was first interested in architectural design
while taking drafting and art at East Surry High School. He excelled
in drafting and wanted to pursue a career in architectural design
right after high school, but things did not work out the way he originally had planned.
He applied to the School of Architecture at the University of Charlotte where he had to turn in a portfolio and write a letter of intent
along with doing an interview. In January 1988, he and his mother
drove through a snowstorm to Charlotte where there was a foot of
precipitation already on the ground. He endured an hour of questions from a professor-and-student interview team about hypothetical life situations, which was a different interview format from anything he had experienced.
They asked him if he wanted to tour the school, but he was so
worried about the weather conditions that he turned them down,
having already toured the facility previously with a friend who was
in the program.
“When I got a letter that told me I was not accepted, I was devastated,” he said. “My whole life I wanted to do this, but now I
couldn’t.”
After following back up with the school, he was told that he did
not seem that interested because he did not tour the building.
When fall began, Needham did attend UNC Charlotte, but was not
happy there.
4
“It disappointed me. I was miserable,” he said.
He came back to Pilot Mountain and started working for his dad
Eddie and Roger Shelton to build houses and farm tobacco.
“I really liked building houses. It was gratifying because I could see
the progress,” he said. “I thought I would go to work and then apply
again to school later. At 18 years old, I felt behind. Nothing in my life
has happened like I thought it would.”
Then, Needham started going to Surry Community College. “I was
a really good student in high school, but I was still in a funk. I didn’t
have the grades I was accustomed to having. Then I passed the exam
to have my contractors license when I was 22. I am really good at
building. I thought I could just build the rest of my life. I never advertised, but I stayed busy doing custom residential and some commercial work.”
He constructed restaurants and gas stations and built homes from
$120,000 up to $1 million during his 20-year career.
“Every day, I would see something architectural that would make
me wonder why did the architect do this,” Needham said.
Things were going great for Needham until the economy took a
downturn.
“When the economy went down, I had six houses going. After I
finished them, my phone wasn’t ringing and then eventually I was
out of work,” he said. “What am I going to do? No one is doing anything. My income went to zero.”
His wife Marie encouraged him to go back to school and do what
he always wanted to do.
“She said we could make it work,” he said. “So, I started going
back to Surry in the hopes to transfer. I also wanted to get my feet
wet again with school.”
In 2008, he signed back up for classes at Surry Community College. His grades were good. He completed both an Associate in Arts
and an Associate in Science in May 2009.
“I don’t know why anyone else wouldn’t want to start at Surry
Community College,” Needham said. “Monetarily and practically,
this was the best thing for me, and I don’t know why it wouldn’t be
for anyone else. It was a great experience going to Surry. It just felt
like I was at home at Surry. Its location also allows students to live at
home and save money.”
Needham was ready to apply to architect school again. This
time he applied to the School of Architecture at NC State. He went
through the process of getting letters of recommendation, submitting his portfolio online, including pictures of the buildings and
homes he had built along with a variety of other things he had done
– a unique tile work pattern in a shower and a table he had built. He
did anything he could to set himself apart.
“I got a letter from NC State saying I didn’t get in,” Needham said.
“I was twice the age and same feelings came back.”
Needham reached out to Richard Vaughn, a business associate,
and long-time supporter of NC State who encouraged the School of
Architecture to allow Needham to enter the school based on a trial
period. If he proved himself after the first semester, the dean would
consider him in the program.
“I did really well the first semester. I had a 4.0 GPA when I got a
Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture from NC State,”
he said. “Just about all the courses I took at Surry transferred, which
was extremely helpful. I didn’t have to take the general education
classes. I got to concentrate solely on architecture classes.”
While studying at NC State, Needham studied abroad at the
Prague Institute in the Czech Republic.
“It was the most amazing thing I did in my life. State has a campus
there. We went to Venice, Rome, Florence, Switzerland, and Germany,” Needham said. “I had never been to Europe and traveled
across water. It was neat to be able to get off a plane and take public
transportation anywhere you want to go. The architecture is beautiful, and the food was good. It was incredible to study the Pantheon
and the Colosseum from having just seen pictures to be able to set
foot on it and put your hand on the wall of the Colosseum and think
about the people who came before you.”
Needham started a master’s degree program in January 2015 and
was offered a teacher assisting position that helped pay for his tuition. He also received many scholarships that helped him along the
way. He graduated on May 6 with a Master of Architecture from
NC State. He began a new job at Novus Architects in Charleston on
May 23.
Growing up and priming tobacco and working on a farm made
him a hard worker, but he also had dreams beyond his home in Pilot
Mountain and encourages people to strive to reach their goals no
matter where they are from or what they are currently doing.
“I have a huge sense of accomplishment because I got turned
down twice, but I finished at the top of the class. It means a lot to
me,” he said. “I am going to keep working hard and try to be the
best at what ever I do.”

Getting a Head Start at Surry Community Helped College
Transfer Student Succeed at Chapel Hill
Olivia McAuley proves that
starting out at a community college prepares students for the
rigorous academic work that is
required to graduate from a university with a challenging degree.
She earned a bachelor’s in Astrophysics with a Math minor this
past May from the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill and
hopes to become a research scientist focusing on galaxy evolution and structure. She is currently taking a year-long break from
Olivia McAuley
studies to focus on her research
and to build her credentials.
Astrophysics is a branch of space science that applies the laws of
physics and chemistry to explain the birth, life and death of stars,
planets, galaxies, nebulae and other objects in the universe. Related
to Astrophysics are the studies of Astronomy and Cosmology.
“It’s basically applying physics to astronomy and galaxy evolution
and structures,” McAuley said. “We look at stellar (star) structure
and some solar.”
Her future plans include graduate school in Astrophysics where
she would like to pursue a master’s and then a doctorate at one of
the following universities – Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Ohio
State University in Columbus, or the University of Central Florida in
Orlando.
This Mount Airy resident started her college career at the Surry
Early College when she was in the ninth grade. She graduated in
2013 with two degrees – an associate in science and an associate
in arts – before she even received a high school diploma from Surry
County Schools.
“I always liked Astronomy since first grade. We talked about the
solar system and never went into depth. So, I read books on the subject by myself. I took Physics at Surry with Mrs. Page,” she said. “At
first, I was hesitant, but I did like Physics. It was the first challenging
class that I had taken. I had more fun in that class than any other
classes.”
McAuley said if she didn’t go into an Astronomy related field she
would have gone into math, her second favorite subject.
“I do want to be a research scientist,” she said. “I have also
thought about being a professor maybe at a small university or a
community college. Being involved in research is definitely my number one choice.”
While at Surry Community College, McAuley was able to take
many introduction classes that helped her jump into the STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) studies at UNC.
“Going to Surry definitely gave me ahead start. It also opened my
eyes to the difference in a community college versus a university,”
she said, explaining that she saw many classmates struggle in Calculus and Physics at UNC.
“At the university, they make it hard. It’s a way of weeding out
students from certain programs. They give you all the information,
6
and it’s really up to you to interpret yourself. You are also graded on
a bell curve, which is hard to get used to, and sometimes you don’t
really know where you stand in the class because it’s based on how
the other students are performing. There are also graduate students
teaching, which makes it harder to learn at the university. The class
size can be as large as 400 students.”
She was an active campus member at UNC serving as co-president of Women in Physics and as the secretary of Society of Physics.
She was also active on Surry’s campus. She was a member of the
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and traveled to San Jose for a PTK
convention in 2013. She was active as a Math Club member and
Campus Ambassador going to local high schools to talk to students
about Surry Community College and pursuing college degrees. She
also gave campus tours for people visiting SCC.
“I took Calculus at Surry, and I loved it. I got my basics at Surry. I
was so far ahead of the students at UNC in Calculus, which helped
me in all my other classes. Surry is really good in Calculus and Physics with getting you prepared even to go outside of your major. It
gets you thinking critically about what you are doing.”
McAuley was able to take care of two foreign language requirements at SCC, and looking back wished she had taken all three at
the community college – a tip she extends to other college transfer
students. She also was able to skip Introductory English and Algebra
at UNC because she had gotten an associate’s degree at Surry. Her
physical education course was also completed at Surry.
She offers this advice to potential college transfer students who
go from the community college to the university.
“Be positive even though you may not be making the grades that
you want. You are getting a degree from a university. Grades really don’t matter in the big scheme of things. Employers don’t care
about grades. They want to know if you are capable of the job,” she
said.

High School Equivalency (HSE)
Two tests – one diploma: Surry Community
College offers two assessment options for
earning a High School Equivalency Diploma. Applicants can take either the General
Educational Development (GED®) Test or
the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET®).
Successful passage of either test results in
the same High School Equivalency Diploma
issued by the North Carolina Board of Community Colleges. Free preparation classes
are offered to give students an opportunity
to gain the knowledge and skills needed to
successfully pass the tests.
GED® Test
The GED® test is computer based only, but
paper testing is available as an accommodation. The test has four content areas:
1. Reasoning through Language Arts
(150 minutes)
2. Mathematical Reasoning (115 minutes)
3. Science (90 minutes)
4. Social Studies (75 minutes)
The test is offered in English and Spanish.
The test requires student knowledge of basic computer skills, which is part of our HSE
curriculum. The cost to students is $20 per
test for a total of $80 for the entire series.
When you pay for one test, you get two retakes at no charge. After the third attempt
to pass a GED® subject area, you must wait
60 days before you can take the test again.
Upon attaining minimum standard scores of
145 on each of the four tests, a high school
equivalency diploma is awarded to the student by the NC State Board of the Community College System. Books, materials, and
instruction are provided free of charge.
For more information, please contact Jennifer Pardue, Chief GED® Examiner, at (336)
386-3674 or [email protected].
GED® UPDATE
The GED® Testing Service announced on
January 25, 2016 that the passing score for
the GED® test is now 145 instead of 150 for
each subject area. Therefore, if you took a
GED® test (beginning January 1, 2014) and
scored 145 or higher, then you passed that
test! Log into GED.com and on the dashboard choose “My Scores” to see your updated record. For more information, contact
the center you attended.
HiSET® Test
Surry Community College now offers the
HiSET® Test. This test is available at Surry
only as a paper-based exam. Various accommodations are available with proper documentation and approval from HiSET®. This
exam has five content areas:
1. Reading (65 minutes)
2. Writing (Part 1 – 75 minutes,
Part 2 – Essay – 45 minutes)
3. Science (80 minutes)
4. Social Studies (70 minutes)
5. Mathematics (90 minutes)
The HiSET® test is available in English and
Spanish. The cost to students is $10 per test
for a total of $50. Two free retakes are only
available when you purchase the entire test
battery for $50. Therefore, retakes are not
available to students who purchase one test
at a time. Upon scoring at least 8 out of 20
on all HiSET® subtests, scoring 2 out of 6 on
the essay, and achieving a total scaled score
of at least 45, a High School Equivalency diploma is awarded by the State Board of the
Community College System.
