Announcements
Michael DeRose informed us that the next blood drive will
be Tuesday, March 23 immediately after the meeting. Kathy
Martin announced that the next session of the Leveled
Literacy Intervention Program at Timber Lane Elementary
School will occur on Tuesday, March 34 at 12:45. Lois
Wilson announced that the GSE team from Jamaica will
be in the area from April 18 – 22. Bob Hahne asked us
to contribute to the RI Foundation early and often. Please
register for the District Conference at Kingsmill Resort in
Williamsburg from April 29 through May 2. The installation
dinner for next year’s officers will take place on July 8.
Happy Talk
Vance Zavela was happy that his daughter is trying out
to sing the National Anthem for the Potomac Nationals.
John McEvilly was happy to visit his oldest son in New
York City.Bob Hahne was happy to report that both the
boys’baseball team and the girls’ softball team at McLean
are highly ranked to be successful as the season begins.
Paul Ward apologized for forgetting to take notes as
Scribe at last week’s meeting, but was happy that Elena

and Dave Coyle were able to cover for him. Michael
DeRose was happy to be leaving to visit his mother in
Sedona, and was happy that the Youth Service Awards
program was a success. Ralf Berthiez was happy to
send the weekend in Annapolis. Nick Kalis was happy
to report that his daughter was accepted to American
University. Glenn Yarborough was happy to report that
his wife, Betsy, took her first steps and was optimistic
that Betsy will achieve a full recovery. Pastor Bob
Driver-Bishop was happy that McLean HS’s Madrigal
Singers visited the Church of the Redeemer. Ed Shahin
was happy to report that his alma mater, Cornell, made it
into the NCAA tournament for the third straight year in a
row. Dale Lazar takes great pleasure to report that Ed’s
best wishes for the Big Red paid off, with Cornell beating
Temple for its first ever win in an NCAA tournament. Dr.
Deborah Jackson was proud to report that McLean HS
received the Governor’s Award of Excellence. Also, she
reported that her grand daughter’s artwork is on display
at the McLean Community Center.

ROTARY’S PolioPlus GLOBAL EFFORT
1. “By the time the world is certified polio-free,
Rotary’s contributions to the global polio eradication
effort will be nearly US$650 million.
2. Since 1988, 5 million people, who otherwise would
be paralyzed with polio, are now walking because of Rotary efforts.
3. Rotary and its global partners vaccinated over 2 billion children in 2005.
4. More than 1 million Rotarians worldwide have contributed toward
polio eradication efforts.
