ARTS & CULTURE ART GALLERIES. Truly an arts town, Sandpoint has about two dozen galleries located in town and the surrounding area, including ARTWORKS GALLERY, representing more than 50 regional artists, and SUNNYSIDE POTTERY, featuring handmade and wheel-thrown pottery. In summer, up to 20 downtown venues become galleries in ARTWALK, a self-guided walking tour to browse revolving art exhibits, sponsored by POAC. artinsandpoint.org (208-263-6139). And about 25 area artists open their galleries for the ARTISTS’ STUDIO TOUR, a self-guided driving tour in the countryside to meet artists and see their working studios. ArtTourDrive.org (208-597-6934). PEND OREILLE ARTS COUNCIL (POAC). For more than 20 years, POAC has been promoting the arts through Sunday Concerts on the Lawn in July; Summer Sounds at Park Place all summer long; Arts & Crafts Fair in August; ArtWalk all summer; revolving art gallery in The Old Power House; and the Performance Series from September to April at the Panida. ArtinSandpoint.org (208-263-6139). BONNER COUNTY HISTORICAL MUSEUM. Celebrating Bonner County’s centennial in 2007, this delightful museum contains many fine displays depicting old-time Bonner County, including railroading, Native American artifacts, extensive collection of Ross Hall photos, pioneer kitchen, a real caboose and lots of memorabilia. Open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., 611 S. Ella at Lakeview Park. BonnerCounty History.org (208-263-2344). PANIDA THEATER. Historic venue at 300 N. An abundance of public lands in and around Sandpoint plus a number of resorts lend many ways to view the spectacular scenery of this picturesque town and surrounding mountains. To view the dazzling waters of Lake Pend Oreille, hike the new Mickinnick Trail on a ridge overlooking town, the Mineral Point Trail that hugs the rugged western shoreline, the Scotchman Peaks Trail high in the Cabinets, the Gold Hill Trail southeast of town or across the Pedestrian Long Bridge. Try walking, bicycling or roller-blading the miles and miles of North Idaho Bikeways’ paved trail system, connecting Sandpoint to Sagle, Dover and Ponderay. Or catch a ride on the Great Escape chairlift to the top of Schweitzer Mountain Resort and walk or take a mountain bike down exhilarating single-track trails. Or if you like, hop on an ATV or ride horseback deep into the boundless backcountry. Come winter, the backcountry is the perfect place to ride snowmobiles on seemingly endless groomed trails or open bowls carved by glaciers over age-old granite in the Selkirk and Cabinet mountains. Then there are all the groomed snowshoeing and cross-country ski trails at Schweitzer, Priest Lake Nordic Center and three state parks in the area. The sky’s the limit, really, when it comes to exploring the outdoors on the many trails in northern Idaho.
