01 january 2016 - National Shrine of Our Lady La Salette
JANUARY 2016
The theme, Mercy Reigns was chosen in regard to the Jubilee Year of Mercy that Pope Francis declared
beginning on December 8, 2015 until November 20, 2016. What does that mean to us Catholics, Christians, nonCatholics and non-Christians? Those of you who are not familiar with the religious concept of the Jubilee Year of
Mercy have experienced mercy in one way or another. For example, major banks and credit card companies give
those who have bad credit a period of five years to restore their credit in order to start fresh. In the business world
we need good credit in making life decision such as buying a house, own a car, or college tuitions. However, some
of us have made bad investments or made major mistakes that “mess up” our credit. Therefore, getting a second
chance or forgiveness is beneficial to start fresh.
The concept of restoring our credit line is similar to the Jubilee Year of Mercy. To make this Jubilee Year
of Mercy special for you, the La Salette Shrine of Attleboro is one of the few locations in the diocese of Fall River
that is designated to have a DOOR of MERCY. Entering this door of mercy will help you to come closer to your
Father who is merciful. By making the decision to become merciful, as our Father in heaven is merciful, mercy
will definitely reign in our society and in our world that is in dire need of mercy.

a film series on mercy
Teaching our children the most fundamental action of
Christian life, how to be merciful, can be a challenge.
In 2016, we’re inviting families to a fun, family oriented
reflection on the “Beatitudes” through the lens of popular
children’s movies. Beginning on Friday, January 22 at 7
pm in the Welcome Center, we will be showing popular
children films monthly that reflect on of the Beatitudes.
We will be using films such as “Up”, “Despicible Me”,
and “Bolt”. You will be welcome to stay and discuss the
movie with your family or take a discussion guide home.
And of course...there will be free popcorn.
The La Salette YD21 Young Adult Group would like
to extend a heartfelt thank you to eveyone who doanted
an item for our Christmas clothing drive. Together, the
group wrapped over 100 clothing items for handout to
those who need them! Thank you again for making the
Christmas Season brighter for those in need!

OUR LADY OF LA SALETTE
DOORofM ER C Y
In connection with the Jubilee of Mercy announced by Pope
Francis, Bishop da Cunha has designated the National
Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette as one of the sites for the
Jubilee’s “Door of Mercy”. The custom of Holy Doors
grew out of our human experience of doors. Doors mark
thresholds and provide entryways. Our Holy Father writes,
“…by crossing the threshold of the Holy Door, we will find
the strength to embrace God’s mercy and dedicate ourselves
to being merciful with others as the Father has been with
us.” (para. 14) The Door of Mercy is open for all who seek
to enter. For those who pass through this door, the very act
of passage expresses an internal desire for conversion as one
who seeks to cross over the threshold of Christ—from sin to
grace, slavery to freedom, from darkness to light.
We have designated the doors that lead into the Church
from the Chapel of light as our “Door of Mercy.” It will be
blessed and dedicated on Sunday December 13 at 12:10 PM.
Please meet in Welcome Center for procession.
Pope Francis in his declaration of the Jubilee of Mercy said,
“ At times we are called to gaze even more attentively on
mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the
Father’s action in our lives. For this reason I have proclaimed
an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy as a special time for the
Church; a time when the witness of believers might grow
stronger and more effective” (The Face of Mercy No. 3).
“This Jubilee is a privileged moment for the Church to learn
what pleases God most, to forgive his children, to have mercy
on them, so that we in turn can forgive our brothers and
sisters, shining as torches of God’s mercy in the world.” The
Pope encourages us to encounter and experience this Face of
Mercy of God and then share that experience with others and
become ‘torches of God’s mercy’ in the world today.
The Pope has extended to everyone who passes through a
Holy Door, the opportunity to receive a Jubilee Indulgence,
a plenary indulgence, a special grace bestowed upon us. A
plenary indulgence is the complete remission of all temporal
punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven
in the sacrament of reconciliation.
In addition to these, in the places of pilgrimage attend the
Holy Mass, make the Stations of the Cross, Pray the Rosary
or the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy, spend time in adoration
and Scripture reading as well in order to receive the special
graces.
How do we use the Door of Mercy?
1. Make a pilgrimage to one of the Holy Doors of Mercy:
National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette in Attleboro is a
designated place of pilgrimage and has a Door of Mercy.
2. Go to Confession to receive God’s forgiveness.
3. Receive Holy Communion
4. Make a Profession of Faith
5. Pray for the intentions of the Pope (one Our Father, one
Hail Mary, and one Glory Be.)
6. Have “the interior disposition of complete detachment
from sin, even venial sin”. How do we share and become “Agents of Mercy”?
“The experience of mercy, indeed, becomes visible in the
witness of concrete signs as Jesus himself taught us. Each
time that one of the faithful personally performs one or more
of these actions, he or she shall surely obtain the Jubilee
Indulgence”. -Pope Francis
The Corporal Works of Mercy: feed the hungry, give drink
to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the
sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead.
The Spiritual Works of Mercy: counsel the doubtful, instruct
the ignorant, admonish sinners, comfort the afflicted, forgive
offenses, bear wrongs patiently, and pray for the living and the
dead
