With females reaching lengths up to 2.85 meters long and weigh up to 350 kg and males growing up to 3.25 meters long and weighing up to over 1000 kg! While appearing relatively clumsy and awkward on land these massive animals can swim with exceptional speed and grace and reach speeds of up to nearly 30 kilometres per hour. Unlike some other pinnipeds, steller sea lions do not migrate and reside in local waters year round. Adult Stellers can be identified by their lighter coloured fur, which can range from a pale yellow to reddish brown but may appear dark brown to black when wet. Males can be distinguished from females by their broader foreheads, flatter snouts, and darker tufts of hair around their necks that gives them an appearance of having a mane. Steller sea lions are skilled and opportunistic hunters; they feed between intertidal zones and continental shelves and use their whiskers under water to sense their prey. Their primary sources of food are: rock fish, pollock, herring, cod, mackerel, halibut, sculpin, capelin, and squid. Stellers have been observed preying on smaller species of seals and sea otter pups and have even been known to enter estuaries of brackish water to feed on fresh water species such as sturgeon, salmon, and trout. Stellers sea lions can be found as far North as Russia and as far south as Central California. In the summertime, this ranges shifts southerly. They are near the top of the ocean food chain and their main predators are orcas, great white sharks, and humans. Every spring, Steller sea lions congregate in large groups at various haul out spots along the coast called rookeries. Once at these rookeries, females will give birth to young within two weeks of arrival. Males will oftentimes fast and guard the rookery territory while females go out to hunt and feed themselves and their young. Steller sea lions will remain at these rookeries until late summer when they will return to the water. Young pups will remain with their mothers for as much as four years. In 1997, Eastern stocks of Steller sea lions were listed as threatened on the Endangered Species List as stocks had decreased by nearly 80% since 1970. Although the exact cause is not known it is believed to be primarily due to over fishing. Fortunately, in October 2013 the Eastern Steller sea lion was removed from the Endangered Species List due to a dramatic comeback in the population. The comeback of the Steller sea lion is proof that if animals are protected and left alone, they will thrive. Instances like this gives hope to recovery of other species with dwindling stocks. n RockFreimuth Ad - Ukee Daze 2015 • Size: 7.5” (w) x 4.8” (h) • Rev 3 • Feb 05/15 Photos & articleBlack by Paul hotel | restaurant | spa discover the best of black rock restaurant Exceptional ocean views, Ocean Wise seafood options and daily menu specials. Ashleigh: At Ukee Juice, a health food restaurant in Ucluelet or online at www.ashleighdrummond.com Ashleigh: I moved here in 2006 from Qualicum Beach. It was the surf that brought me here, but I also really enjoy smaller, humble towns in the midst of wilderness. I grew up on Saltspring Island and highly enjoy the outdoors and the ocean. Ukeedaze: Biggest pet peeve? Ashleigh: People who drive super slow and then as soon as a passing lane hits they speed up to levels that make it difficult to pass with a four cylinder vehicle. Ukeedaze: Guilty Pleasure? Ashleigh: Hmm hard one I guess you could say my guilty pleasure is eating in the shower or bath Ukeedaze: Goofy, or Regular? Ashleigh: Goofy all the way! n Ukeedaze: When did you get into painting? Asheligh: I’ve always been keen on creating art as a small child, but to put a date on painting with intent to take it further than just a hobby, I would say 2010. Ukeedaze: What mediums do you use? Ashleigh: I am passionate about too many things! It gets me distracted! But to name a few: holistic nutrition, surfing, gardening, acupuncture and right now this moving, kicking baby inside me. Ukeedaze: Where can people view your work? 12 Fall 2015 TOFINO - UCLUELET Ukeedaze: Besides painting what else are you passionate about? Sept. 19 - 27, 2015 Ashleigh: I use mostly acrylic paints on stretched canvas, but I also dabble in oil and with moulding mediums and acrylic washes on birch panels. Surfing the West Coast! No more bee stings. Great news, right? Well, not really... Bees are an essential part of our ecosystem. Bees pollinate many of our trees, forests, plants and garden. Over 80% of the world’s plants are pollinated by bees. Without bees, our food supply is at risk. Common crops such as apples, coffee, blueberries, beans, tomatoes, kiwifruit, onions, cashews, cabbage (the list goes on...) are pollinated by bees. What can we do to help? • Stop using harmful chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers on our gardens and lawns. These are harmful to pollinators as well as humans and the soil. • Buy raw, local honey. Raw honey is a great healthy alternative to processed sweeteners and contains natural vitamins, enzymes and antioxidants. • Plant bee-friendly items such as poppies, sunflowers and clematis. Lavender, rosemary, thyme, mint, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries are some of the many bee-friendly edibles. • Let dandelions grow. They are one of the important first source of nectar for bees that survive the winter until more plentiful blooms of spring appear. They are also edible and nutritious. • Buy organic food and products. Organic food and products such as hemp and cotton are produced without harmful chemical pesticide and fertilizers, which are harmful to bees. • Share awareness with our friends, family and people around us. Talk about the importance of bees and what we can do to help. n Diana Uy 16 Fall 2015 Photo: Paul Freimuth Ukeedaze17 Big Beach Displays T he Wild Pacific Trail Society is proud to announce three new Children’s Interpretive Displays at Big Beach in Ucluelet. The interactive displays include a three-part spinning cylinder with information on three endangered species: the orca, the sea otter, and the yellow rockfish. An impressive 800 year old cross-section of a log provides a backdrop for a forest scavenger hunt which leads to a geocache. Near the end of the picnic tables, a new sign solves some of the mystery surrounding a real 1890’s shipwreck. Summer Events Recap The Trail Society would like to acknowledge Heather Grimshire (WPTS Board Member) for dreaming the idea, Clayoquot Biosphere Trust for their funding support, the District of Ucluelet, and Oyster Jim for building all the structures in the Big Beach Interpretive Park – what a natural engineer! Ucluelet is the beautiful backdrop of multiple diverse events. This past summer, events included Pacific Rim Arts Society Summer Festival; Otalith Music Festival; Ukee Days; Vancouver Island Region Porsche Club Fund Raiser; Edge to Edge Marathon; Van Isle 360 International Yacht Race; and more. Check out www.ucluelet.ca for upcoming events. n Our grand unveiling of the signs was held June 12, 2015. Thank you to Carl Sieber, Pacific Rim National Park Naturalist, for entertaining the grade 2 and 3 children from Ucluelet Elementary School at the opening. The Trail Society hopes the signs will capture the children’s interest, provoke their curiosity and get them actively involved with their natural surroundings. The Wild Pacific Trail Society continues to build upon dreams and looks forward to many more educational opportunities. Please enjoy the park and the signs. n Photo: Paul Freimuth Photo: Paul Freimuth Photo: Diana Uy Photo: Diana Uy Shannon Szymczakowski Wild Pacific Trail Society Photo: Douglas Ludwig Ucluelet Marine Services Henry Tensen Photo: Douglas Ludwig 35 years Certified General Mechanic & Certified Diesel Engine Mechanic Foot of Seaplane Base Road Winter Projects Welcome 250-266-9402 18 Fall 2015 Photo: Paul Freimuth Ukeedaze19 Photo: Paul Freimuth Photo: Nic Kamma Summerplace Inn - Cozumel Mexico Canadian owners and operators nightly, weekly, or monthly rates available www.summerplaceinn.net [email protected] British Columbia, Canada: (604) 792 6312 Cozumel, Mexico: (011) 52 987 872 63 00 Vonage - Cozumel: (604) 755 4539 Want to own?
