PICK OF THE WEEK: SUNDAY
Here is another pair of diversions
courtesy of the Summer Theatre Fest
Reading Series, the every-Mondaynight play-reading events being staged
across South Florida. At 7:30 p.m.,
Palm Beach Dramaworks (201 Clematis St., West Palm Beach; 561-514-4042,
ext. 2) is hosting Mark Perlberg’s
“Timmins Children,” which follows a
Canadian physician who receives a
lifetime achievement award and a
Vancouver Sun reporter ostensibly
sent to interview him about it. At 8
p.m., New Theatre at the Roxy Performing Arts Center (1645 SW 107th
Ave., Miami; 305-443-5909) will host
Ricky Martinez’s “Heavenly Hands,”
which concerns an island doctor, who
the locals believe has supernatural
healing powers. SouthFloridaTheatre.com.
Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About
Nothing” is worth seeing just for the
Beatrice and Benedick war of insults,
hilarious putdown fests between two
characters clearly in love with each
other. They provide a witty palate
cleanser amid a romance-heavy plot.
So we’re hopeful that Shakespeare by
the Sea XXIV’s al fresco mounting of
the Bard’s comedy, taking place at the
Seabreeze Amphitheatre at Jupiter’s
Carlin Park (750 South State Road
A1A), keeps the funny intact. The 8
p.m. performance is free and will
continue Friday, Saturday and Sunday
at the same time and venue.
561-963-6755 or PBShakespeare.org.
Friday
Country star Tim McGraw will
head to the Cruzan Amphitheatre (601
Sansburys Way No. 7, West Palm
Beach) on Friday night minus his
equally popular country-star wife,
Faith Hill, on a tour of his greatest hits
and material from his new album,
“Sundown Heaven Town.” The lead
single from the new release, out in
September, is “Meanwhile Back at
Mama’s,” the music video of which
finds the longtime couple on the
sprawling grounds of their Tennessee
farm. Recent setlists from the Sundown Heaven Town tour feature
McGraw’s best-known songs, including “I Like It, I Love It,” “Where the
Green Grass Grows” and “Live Like
You Were Dying.” Cassadee Pope and
Kip Moore will open. 7 p.m.
$40.75-$85.70. 561-795-8883 or LiveNation.com.
HBO/COURTESY
Dana Carvey performs on a bill with Dennis Miller on Sunday at Hard Rock Live.
Live from Hard Rock
A pair of “Saturday Night Live” castmates, Dana Carvey and Dennis Miller,
will appear on a double bill Sunday night
at Hard Rock Live (1 Seminole Way,
Hollywood). So the topics du jour should
be politics-related, right? If Carvey
stamped out his then-nascent career on
the NBC variety juggernaut with impersonations of H. Ross Perot and President
George H.W. Bush, while Miller has done
the same on conservative radio after his
“SNL” stint, politicians should make for
easy targets on this comedy tour. Not for
Carvey: “My style is very, very different
[than Miller’s],” he told the Washington
Post this month. “I find it’s fascinating to
move someone on the right a little left —
and move someone on the left a little
right, which is near impossible.” Rather,
Carvey will focus on his observationalstyle humor and absurdist musings (and
the song “Choppin’ Broccoli,” we hope).
7 p.m. $54-$79. 954-797-5531 or MyHrl.com.
Saturday
The kitschy, luau-themed gathering
known as the Lake Worth Crab Crawl
will go a bit differently than the familiar boozy barhops around town. Expected attire for lei-wearing convivialists includes flowered shirts, grass
skirts and a coconut (your mug for the
night). The crawl will kick off at 6 p.m.
Saturday at South Shores Tavern and
Patio Bar (502 Lucerne Ave., Lake
Worth). Other stops include Dave’s
Last Resort and Raw Bar, Rhum Shak,
Propaganda, South Shores Tavern and
Brogues Downunder. $10-$15, includes
free drink tickets for vodka and Due
South Brewery beer. Proceeds will
benefit the Palm Beach youth-surfing
nonprofit Future 6. GoThirdEyeAdventures.com.
Tuesday
Are we in an Akira Kurosawa movie? The suits of samurai armor and
cache of exotic swords on display at
the Morikami Museum and Japanese
Gardens’ “Samurai Culture: Treasures
of South Florida Collections” certainly
draw comparisons to the director’s
feudal, Japan-set films. The Morikami’s time machine to the Edo Period,
when these dignified warriors prospered, also includes a series of paintings and prints depicting samurai daily
life, on loan from a handful of South
Florida collectors. The exhibit will
close Aug. 31 at the museum (4000
Morikami Park Road, Delray Beach).
$8-$14. 561-495-0233 or Morikami.org.
Wednesday
The Cuban folksinger and diva born
Albita Rodriguez 52 years ago first gained
attention from Gloria Estefan, Gianni
Versace and other celebrities in the early
1990s, when she performed at Spanish
restaurants in Miami. The Grammy and
Emmy winner, whose musical roots are
tied to traditional Cuban son and guajira,
has since been signed to Emilio Estefan’s
Crescent Moon label and has shared a
staged with Celia Cruz and Tito Puente.
Albita will perform 7:30 p.m. Wednesday
and Thursday at Jazziz Nightlife (201 Plaza
Real, Boca Raton). $45-$75. 561-300-0730
or JazzizNightlife.com.
