2 0 1 5 P R E S I D E N T , S M E S S A G E ELIZABETH ANDREW President Of The Friends Of The Long Beach Public Library PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE ..1-3 Hello, I’m the newly elected President, Elizabeth Andrew. Before I introduce myself, I want to recognize and give many thanks to Jo Rae Zuckerman who served for 8 years as our President and Marie Treadwell who shared the position with Jo Rae over the last two years. As most of you know, the legacy Jo Rae leaves behind is impressive and extensive. So many accomplishments and honors that could surly fill this newsletter and possibly even the next one. Both Marie and Jo Rae continue to be Board members, and I rely on their collective wisdom, history and insight. So who am I? I was recruited to be on the Friends board over four years ago by Marve’ Watkins-King, dear friend and Friends board member. We met at a book club where Marve’ invited me to attend a Friends’ board meeting. Just thinking that I was an observer, you can imagine my surprise when at the end of my first board meeting, Jo Rae Zuckerman, President, warmly greeted me, and said that she was excited that I (apparently) had volunteered to fill an opening for Recording Secretary. Since I had recently taken early retirement, I thought this would be a great way to keep me interested and occupied. I happily and gratefully held the Recording Secretary position until last May when I received four phone calls asking if I would consider being the Friends’ President. I said “no” three times, but the wonderful Nominating Committee finally wore me down, and by the fourth phone call and request I gladly and happily said yes. I retired early in 2009 after a 30+ year career in Human Resources Management, mostly in Aerospace. So instead of working 60 hours a week and commuting all over LA and Orange County, I now enjoy reading by my pool and tending my urban vegetable garden conveniently located in my flower beds. I enjoy staying active and go biking or swimming daily. While my 2 cats aren’t on board with my plant based vegetarian lifestyle, they are willing to tolerate it as long as they get their daily chicken and salmon. Indiana is where I grew up with two brothers on a 2,000 acre agricultural farm with hogs, cattle and sheep, 10 miles from the nearest town (think Little House on the Prairie). My brothers and most of my 12 great nieces and nephews are still in Indiana, as well as an exhusband. I attended Ball State University in Muncie, IN, where I received a Bachelor degree in Speech and Hearing Pathology, Special Education and Deaf Education. In 1981, jobs in the Midwest took a hard hit, so I decided to look for a better environment and warmer weather, that’s when I packed up my Ford Pinto and camped my way across the US, finally arriving in California where I knew I’d found a new home. Being an early lover of books and libraries, you could find me every day after school across the street at the library hunting for the most fun and obscure books in the shelves. As a grade schooler, I thoroughly enjoyed the large hardback books of the cartoons from the New Yorker magazine. Now, I mostly enjoy fictional history, legal dramas, CSI intrigues, and Bill Bryson’s books, yet Atlas Shrugged still remains my favorite book. Traveling with my boyfriend of 7 years is another one of my great pleasures. I would most definitely return to Australia, Hawaii or Paris in a heartbeat, but have started on a wish list: Antarctica, the Galapagos Islands, and Ireland where the family is from. Currently, I sit on several other boards: Advisory Board for the Lifetime Learning Center at Long Beach City College, Long Beach Neighborhoods First, and HUSH2. Let me share one highlight from this summer which was being a member of a team consisting of Foundation and Friends Board Members, and Library staff. We were invited to speak at the American Library Association (ALA) National Conference in San Francisco. In 2013, on behalf of the Friends, Barbara Egyud, applied for and won the CitizensSave-Libraries grant. The grant supplied specific training to help develop a blueprint for advocacy campaigns to restore, increase and save threatened library budgets. In San Francisco we spoke at 2 sessions highlighting how we applied the grant training Page 2 B O O K S T and shared our personal experiences in creating and maintaining our highly successful working relationship between the Friends, The Foundation and the Library. My wish list for the next two years is too long for this column. Attending the conference gave me many ideas on how we can have fun events and raise money for our library. Anyone interested in a food truck event called: Beer, Brats and Books, or maybe an Antiques Road Show type of event, let the Friends know. So many ideas and these can include our Friends members volunteering to assist in all this fun. Maybe one of you would like to help us research the value of many of the wonderful coffee-table books donated to us and help us sell these at our book store. There are many ways for you to assist. Let me know your ideas about how you think we can have fun and raise extra money for Main and our Neighborhood Branches. BOOK STORE by Barbara Hubbs, Director Of The Book Store O R E The grand opening of the Friends of the Library bookstore at the Main Library took place in 2001. It had been the dream of Eleanor Schmidt to sell donated books to earn money for the library’s materials budget. It took awhile to realign some doorways, but what had been a more or less wasted space became a productive, functioning enterprise. backs are still one dollar. Trade paperbacks have increased and so have regular paperbacks. They now sell for one dollar and seventy-five cents respectively. Magazines are still twenty-five cents, but the supply has dwindled. Supply and demand have caused the price of VCR tapes to fall to twenty-five cents. CD’s are still twenty-five cents. We sell DVD’s for one dollar. Most of these are library discards. We have also introduced a monthly silent auction which features quality books that have been donated. The prices are very reasonable. You cannot bid on-line, but you can find a listing of our offerings on the Support the Library website which is part of the lbpl.org website. Hope to see you at the bookstore. GIFT RECEIVED BOARD OF DIRECTORS of the LONG BEACH LIBRARY FOUNDATION, in honor of the Marriage of MARGARET SMITH and ROB BELLEVUE Throughout its fourteen years of operation, prices have remained stable. Hard- Page 3 D I R E C T 0 R ‘ S R E P O R T DIRECTOR’S REPORT by Glenda Williams Director of Library Services FY 2016 Budget Update City Council passed the FY 2016 budget on Tuesday, September 15, 2015. The budget will take effect October 1. The City realized a small budget surplus of $630,000 for the year, which means there weren’t any budget cuts. For FY 2016 the Long Beach Public Library will re-position staffing to concentrate on marketing library programs and events, as well as focus on human resource functions. In addition, City Council approved Mayor Garcia’s recommendation to open three branch libraries on Sundays and allocated $183,000 for the city-wide pilot program. The three chosen libraries are Bay Shore, Burnett and North. The libraries will be open in October from 12 noon to 4 p.m. New Branch Services Manager I am pleased to announce the appointment of Donald Rowe as the new Manager of Branch Library Services. Don comes to Long Beach from the County of Los Angeles Public Library system. His most recent position was the Assistant Regional Administrator of West Region where he was responsible for managing library services for 17 beach city and South Bay branch libraries. Don was also intimately involved with the staffing and move-in of the new 2-story, state of the art Manhattan Beach Library. His experience will be critical as we prepare to open the new North Library in the summer of 2016. Don received his Master’s Degree in Library and Information Sciences from San Jose State University and has 14 years of library experience. Summer Reading Club More than 5,700 children, teens and adults participated in this year's Summer Reading Club (SRC)! The theme for this year was “Every Hero Has a Story.” Participants logged almost 600,000 minutes read (children) and 3,658 books were read by participating teens and adults! A variety of programs were made available with funds from the Friends of Long Beach Public Library including: Buster Balloon Show (comedy, mind-boggling magic and balloon twisting expertise all in one); Percussive Storyteller (percussion music accompanied a high energy storytelling performance); and Swazzle (Super Conductor, the hero, went on a hilarious musical quest to rescue Melody, Harmony and Rhythm from the clutches of the villainous Decomposer). Everyone had a fabulous time enjoying the performances and reading during the summer. This is very important to keep young Page 4 V I C E P R E S I D E N T minds sharp and ready to learn when school begins in the fall. website at www.lbpl.org. Take it for a drive today (pun intended)! In addition, this summer we incorporated STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) programming at The Studio in the Main Library as part of our SRC. We partnered with Google and hosted Maker Camp 2015: novice makers were invited to build, tinker and explore for six weeks. A variety of fun projects were completed and epic virtual field trips were enjoyed with the guidance of “camp counselors.” Weekly themes included Fantasy, Funkytown, Farmstead, Flight, Fun and Games and Far-Out Future. JAN LOVIE Last, but not least, we also partnered with Shared Science to host four weeks of LEGO Robotics fun. Classes covered an introduction to LEGO Mindstorm Robots, Programming Robot Turns, Using Robot Sensors and concluded with the Robot Challenge. This was one of the best Summer Reading Clubs ever! New Online Resource Driving-Tests.org, a company dedicated to driver safety and education, offers free Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) practice tests to library patrons. The new service provides free tests, written specifically based on the State of California DMV materials, and includes accessibility tools that allow users to hear selections read aloud, make them into MP3s, translate pages into other languages, magnify text and mask sections of the screen for greater visibility on driving practice tests. Driving-Tests.org is available now on the Library's Vice President of the Friends Jan’s next door neighbor, Pat Whelan, a book store owner in Los Altos, was on the Friend’s board and got her interested in the Friends. She volunteered in our bookstore for years and still helps out occasionally. Then about 10 years ago, Bernice Van Steenbergen, also a former board member, spoke to Jan about becoming the VP who is responsible for membership and renewals. Jan picks up membership envelopes from the library, lists the incoming money/checks and forwards that to our treasurer Doris Soriano. She also writes the acknowledgments of payment we have all received, and then coordinates with Linda Bresnan, our Honor Book chair, about new and renewing Super Friends. She also phones or mails reminder letters to those who may have forgotten to renew. Born in LA, Jan lived in Illinois from ages 211 before her family settled in Long Beach. She’s been married 54 years to Winston (Win), who was the boy next door. Jan retired 20 years ago after 42 years in corporate banking with Bank of America. Now she and Win often play golf and work together at their Long Beach Community Garden plot where pink tomatoes are her favorite crop to grow and eat. Jan loves to travel and has been around most of the world, once playing polo on painted ele- Page 5 phants during a trip to India with National Geographic. Typically, she visits her Norwegian cousins every couple of years. Coming up is a cruise to Mexico and South America through the Panama Canal, followed later by a cruise to Rio de Janeiro. M E M O R I A L B O O Her favorite reading includes general fiction and mysteries: several favorite authors include Margaret Truman, Barbara Taylor Bradford, James Patterson, Robert Ludlum, and Pat Conroy. Page 6 HONOR BOOKS by Linda Bresnan H O N O R For all of our valued Super Friends a change has been made in the procedure of choosing ‘Honor Books’ & Branches. In the future, librarians will make their selections of Honor Books & Branches where they are most needed. This process will enable them to quickly choose a book(s) from their present Wish List and will prevent duplicates from going to the same Branches. Super Friends will be notified of the title(s) selected and in what Branch they’ve been placed. Again, we thank you ever so much for your continued support, especially in these times of loss of revenue and staffing changes that have affected many of our processes and procedures in this past year in selecting ‘Honor Books.’ ‘SUPER FRIENDS’ Those who have contributed $100 or more in their membership for 2015.
