REVIEWED BY THE CITY OF LONG BEACH MARINE BUREAU
A Message from the Local Organizing Committee
August 1, 2014 On the behalf of California State University, Long Beach, it is with great pleasure that we welcome all compeBtors, officials, parents, and spectators visiBng Long Beach for the 2014 Naples Island Collegiate RegaHas. 82 years ago, Long Beach hosted a terrific Olympic compeBBon and today, conBnues to live by that legacy to officially designate itself as the “AquaBc Capital of America.” Once started as a small event with UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine, this event has grown to become a premiere fall event in Southern California. It is our goal to provide an inclusive environment that celebrates the sport. Our parBcipants run the gamut from novice to expert, bringing a wide range of compeBBve experience to this event. As it conBnues to gain popularity, we have come across an opportunity to make this event stand out even more. In our 9th consecuBve year hosBng this event, we took on the challenge to expand this fall collegiate event to provide for the collegiate events displaced in Newport Harbor last year. We have been working hard for the past eight months in planning, obtaining sponsorships, and working with city officials. At the same Bme, we want to keep the tradiBons alive, including the race around Naples Island, and the novice sprints inside the Historic Marine Stadium. We’d like to thank our alumni, the Seal Beach Lion’s Club, the Long Beach Yacht Club, the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, the City of Long Beach, the Long Beach AquaBc Capital of America FoundaBon, the Long Beach Rowing AssociaBon, our Southwest Region USRowing referees, and our volunteers that have contributed countless hours to make this regaHa a landmark event for west coast rowing. We hope that this will become a tradiBon for your team as it has been for us. See you in November! Kenneth Glenn, President Beach Crew Alumni Assoc. CSULB 49er FoundaBon REV 3B- 10/29/2014

Traffic PaKerns Please see the aHached course maps for the head race and novice sprints. If deparBng from the Pete Archer Rowing Center, watch for any boat traffic traveling through the Cerritos Chanel. Crews will warm-‐
up between the Long Beach Yacht Club and the Cerritos Channel each day, follow a counter-‐clockwise course to warm up before meeBng back at the starBng line. Spectators Spectators may gather along the beach area, or along the concrete paths around Marine Stadium. This is ideal as it gives the viewers a full view of the enBre stadium course. Please DO NOT confront the regaKa staff or gather in front of the judges’ stand (“3S” Building) at the finish line. We advise that spectators not gather around the loading dock, ramps, and washing plauorms, at the Pete Archer Rowing Center due to the high amount of boat launching traffic that is expected to be there. Thank you for your cooperaBon. Head Race Course A new run-‐through video of the course is available online: hKp://www.beachcrew.org/locaTon/ Coxswains, your crew will approach the low Second Street bridge (see the video). It is advised to travel under the right span to ensure the path is clear on the other end. This will require your crew to pull harder on starboard side once under the bridge, then port side once approaching the starBng line. The Alamitos Bay Head Race course starts in front of the low Second Street “GraffiB Bridge” at the L-‐
shaped “Owl Dock”. A referee will be on the beach side. The crews may warm up in the opposite direcBon of the race course around Naples Island. If desired, the crew may take the shortcut to the starBng line through the “Sweat Box” along Bayshore Avenue. Crews may not race through this area. Do not pass other crews in the Sweat Box without good judgement. Once started, crews proceed south along the Belmont Peninsula, through “Dog Bark” (Dog Beach Park). This is the narrowest part of the course. Stay to the right of all large yellow buoys (yellow dots on the maps). As you approach the waterway going out to the jeHy, start turning ler towards the Long Beach Yacht Club (LBYC). Once at the corner your crew will need to make a 90 degree turn to head up the Marine Stadium for the remaining 2000 meters. As you approach the tall Davies Bridge (Second Street), proceed under the center span between the two bents. On the other side of the bridge look out for regaHa staff controlling the Davis Launch Ramp. The center span should be cleared for you at all Bmes. Once the crew approaches the 1000 meter pole at the Cerritos Channel, you have a clear waterway for the remainder of your race. The total distance is 4,200 meters. Yellow buoys are planted along the course for your safe navigaBon. Always stay to the right of them. They are marked as yellow dots on the maps. Once past the finish line, red buoys mark your return lane. Stay inside the return lane. Please do not enter back onto the course for any reason unless instructed by a referee. Arer warm-‐up/check-‐in with course clerk at GraffiB Bridge.
