McPherson Robert J. Keyes What an exhilarating time it is to contribute to the uplift and empowerment of the Greater Philadelphia region! The Urban League of Philadelphia has concluded another exciting year of providing key leadership on issues that impact communities of color. We continue to drive vitally-needed community development solutions, and we are the region’s strongest source of dedicated, one-on-one support in Career Services, Youth and Education, Housing Counseling and Entrepreneurship. The 2014-15 program year was buoyed by the development of a strategy for growth. This growth strategy included significant expansion of our geographic service area, partnership growth and further buildout of our in-house signature services. We are also grateful for continued generous donor support, including grants by Bank of America ($40,000), Wells Fargo ($25,000), and more than a dozen other partners who ardently believe in our mission and provide the financial foundation for ULP to fortify programs, influence policy and catalyze change. In total, we raised over $2.5 million during Fiscal Year 2015. OME Here is just a sampling of the past year’s highlights: •ULP was the proud host of a press conference for National Urban League president and CEO Marc H. Morial, who announced Philadelphia’s selection as a market for the NUL’s Jobs Rebuild America: Educate, Employ, Empower initiative. •As part of our commitment to youth and our work to support an increase in high school graduation rates, we awarded 73 college scholarships totaling $145,000 to local high school students at our annual Empowerment Gala and Scholarship Dinner. •Our Urban League Entrepreneurship Center (ULEC) served 465 small business owners and entrepreneurs, resulting in over $3 million in contracts and financing. •ULP expanded its service area to include Camden, NJ and we are actively engaged in extending outreach to the other communities in need in our region, among them Chester, PA. •The Urban Leadership Forum, our signature career program for rising managers, graduated 35 employees from the region’s top corporations and hosted a successful first “alumni” event. While we are proud of all that we accomplished, we know without a doubt that our voice remains a critical need. With a guiding 2015-26 theme of Empowering the Region: Education, Jobs and Justice, we continue to advance the fight for education reform, economic parity, political engagement, and criminal justice. Enjoy the following recap of our program year, and we look forward to partnering with you! 2015 Urban League of Philadelphia Annual Report 3 N O I T E D U CA “I enrolled 61 students yesterday and I think I only taught one day last week! I can’t wait to see where I am when we meet! I’m rocking and rolling and I’m loving you for it! Thanks for challenging me! You are the best!” At ULP, we believe that education is the foundation for empowerment. In a city like Philadelphia, where public schools battle chronic low academic proficiency and send only a small percentage of students to college, this foundation is a necessity. While our schools work to improve and overcome gentrification, de facto segregation and haphazard school funding, the families they serve need tangible bridges to opportunity. In partnership with organizations like the School District of Philadelphia (SDP) and the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare (DPW), ULP provides support programs for students that guide them toward better academic outcomes and create a college-going culture. ULP also manages the Northwest Philadelphia site of Child Care Information Services (CCIS), a DPW program that helps families select and pay for childcare in Philadelphia, through which we served 11,348 children from 5,674 families last year. We are also pleased to offer Urban Green League, which offers urban youngsters outdoor education experiences at Riverbend Environmental Center. We are proud to be in our fourth year of partnership with the SDP’s GEAR UP program, which helps disadvantaged students prepare for college and enrolled over 150 teens during our program year. GEAR UP recently received a $29.1 million grant from the United States Department of Education to ensure that they continue to serve students both socially and educationally. – I. LAWSON, URBAN LEAGUE ENTREPRENEURSHIP CENTER PROGRAM 2015 Urban League of Philadelphia Annual Report 4 EDUCATION continued On the education advocacy front, we are committed to advancing the fight for common core standards and an equitable school funding formula. In March, ULP staff attended the 12th Annual Legislative Policy Conference in Washington, DC, where we met with key legislators to endorse the Fair Funding Formula for the State of Pennsylvania and emphasize the importance of reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, a federal law mandating that all K-12 students have access to equitable and excellent education. In addition to awarding 73 college scholarships totaling $145,000, we hosted the well-attended College Scholarship Night in Philly II in collaboration with Community College of Philadelphia (CCP). Philadelphia Higher Education Assistance Agency, The Philadelphia Foundation, ULP and CCP presented 2015 grants and scholarship opportunities available for students pursuing an affordable college education. ULP strives to underscore the importance of education as a conduit to college and employment through interaction with children of all ages. This past winter, ULP held scholarship sessions at Mastery Charter School’s Lenfest and Simon Gratz Campuses and in partnership with the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, last spring we hosted a Future Ready program for boys from Feltonville Middle School to help them learn about what we do at ULP and how we do it: our backgrounds, education, prior work experiences, and personal hobbies and interests. “The seven week course is POSITIVELY worth every hour you’re there. I cannot say enough or thank you enough for all that I’ve learned. Please continue the classes and help more people to learn and grow. Again, thank the wonderful instructors and keep up the great work you’re doing! From my heart to yours.” – ANITA L. RICHARDSON CONNECT TO WORK PARTICIPANT 5 JO S B According to the state’s Labor Department, With overall unemployment at 7.4% in Philadelphia – and African American unemployment more than double that, at 16% – our region still struggles to overcome burdens such as systemic disadvantage and generational poverty. ULP serves job-seekers and employers alike by connecting them in both traditional and innovative ways to jobs, training and entrepreneurship. We believe that both employment and employability are the keys to upward mobility and will ensure that our community fully participates in the post-Recession revitalization of Philadelphia. This past year was filled with efforts in support of these goals. In December, in conjunction with our annual Whitney M. Young, Jr. Community Empowerment Awards Luncheon, Marc H. Morial announced Philadelphia’s selection as a market for the NUL’s “Jobs Rebuild America: Educate, Employ, Empower” initiative. Jobs Rebuild America is a $100 million, five-year public-private effort addressing the nation’s employment and education crises. As a participating market, ULP has been granted $1 million by NUL “to reach job-seekers, vulnerable youth and entrepreneurs.” The funding will help us create a 21st Century model of support to reach hundreds of entrepreneurs who are creating jobs in our city, while providing key products and services to our community and beyond. “The ULF brought into focus what I really wanted to accomplish in the next two years. It helps you to stop and think about your personal goals, which is often difficult for a busy professional.” – JELA FOOTE 2015 Urban League of Philadelphia Annual Report 6 JOBS continued In January, our Career Services department partnered with Global Citizen to host the 19th Annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service Jobs and Opportunity Fair. The event attracted over 350 job-seekers who met with the hiring managers for 23 employers. The Housing department also participated by leading workshops and hosting an information table. That same month, college students from a number of universities came to ULP’s 2nd Annual College Internship Fair, hosted by Independence Blue Cross. The students, who had received extensive training from career services and youth programs at ULP, had direct access to employers and key players in the Philadelphia business world. “I enjoy serving my community and I figured if someone is giving me a chance, is there a reason why I shouldn’t do the same for someone else?” We were delighted to host Jon Campbell, NUL Board Member and head of the National Wells Fargo Foundation in early March, when he visited our Entrepreneurship Center and engaged in a robust dialogue with business owners and the internal ULP team that supports them. NExT Philadelphia: Network of Extraordinary Talent helped reinforce the importance of African American participation in STEM fields with a Philly Tech Week forum co-presented by Comcast titled Strengthening Your Voice in a STEM Industry. The forum provided the audience with strategies and resources to help them strengthen our collective voice in the Tech industry. The Guild, now in its 68th year was the recipient of several awards at the National Urban League conference this past July in Ft. Lauderdale, FL for outstanding service and for the most funds raised by an Urban League Guild in support of its affiliate. – B. GORDON 2014 URBAN LEAGUE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT, YOUTH PROGRAM 2015 Urban League of Philadelphia Annual Report 7 ULP acts as a justice advocate in numerous ways: from one-on-one housing counseling sessions that help people purchase, maintain, and stay in their homes, to providing both foundational and growth resources to entrepreneurs, to mobilizing the Black community around participation in the electoral process. JU Now in our 98th year as a civil rights organization, ULP has always celebrated and built upon the historical works of activists who toiled to secure freedoms for our community. ST As an advocacy organization, we work to augment and strengthen laws that protect rights, access, property, stability, dignity and self-determination. In our view, justice encompasses not only criminal justice, but also dismantling the impact of centuries of systemic racism in areas such as the wealth gap, housing, incarceration, policing and education. The data about the plight of our communities speaks for itself in the State of Black America report that was released in March. ICE “We are each other’s magnitude and bond.” – GWENDOLYN BROOKS “The region’s vision for growth must include opportunities for minority entrepreneurs. At the Urban League, our work revolves around the preparation of our small business clients so that they have the internal tools and access to capital that makes business growth possible.” - KEITH ELLISON 2015 Urban League of Philadelphia Annual Report 8 JUSTICE continued Finally, on the economic development front, our Connect to Work (Career Services) and Housing Counseling teams partnered with Wells Fargo and TD Bank to offer financial literacy seminars on the importance of budgeting and credit management. These dedicated ULP partners were on site in November and April respectively to deliver workshops, assist participants with opening bank accounts, and promote sound financial management and a secure financial future. With the abysmally low voter participation in Philadelphia’s 2015 Mayoral Primary (only 27%) – we know that we must work harder to educate and mobilize our communities during the lead up to the 2016 presidential election as well as for local elections taking place before then. We will continue to volunteer in Election Protection programs, register voters and holdtelephone town halls around key policies and “Every election – legislation. If we do not from the Presidential down vote, we will not have to the state and local elections a voice. – has an impact on our lives. We must turn out, because our vote does count. It’s our voice, and we need to work to make sure we are heard.” – SHANNON WILLIAMS ADVOCACY AND POLICY MANAGER URBAN LEAGUE OF PHILADELPHIA “The Urban League of Philadelphia and the CTW program have given me the training and the confidence I need to re-enter the work place.” Teens and young adults have always been the backbone of the movement, and we stand united with the surge of young activists brought together through the ubiquity of both social media and rallying cries such as #BlackLivesMatter. – STEFAN DANIELS CTW PARTICIPANT We pledge to be ever-present in both Harrisburg, PA, Trenton, NJ and Washington, DC to help enact legislation that ensures that the tragic deaths of our sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, sisters and brothers are not in vain. In support of this sentiment, ULP also endorsed the NUL’s 10-Point Justice Plan outlining police reform and accountability recommendations. 2015 Urban League of Philadelphia Annual Report 9 LS June 30, 2015 ASSETS A I (Unaudited) 201 5 FIN C N A LIABILITIES Cash Receivables Other Assets 4,104,323 351,260 117,498 Total Assets 4,573,081 Accounts Payable and Accrued Expenses Other Current Liabilities 4,098,886 Total Liabilities NET ASSETS Revenue Source State 92% Special Events 2% Grants and Fees 2% Contributions 1% Local 1% NUL 1% Membership & Other 1% 3,861,051 237,836 Unrestricted Temporarily Restricted 281,535 192,660 Total Net Assets 474,195 Total Liabilities and Net Assets 4,573,081 Use of Funding Community and Economic Development 97% Administration 2% Business Talent & Diversity 1% Advocacy, Policy & Youth 0% 2015 Urban League of Philadelphia Annual Report 10 PA RTNERSH S P I MAJOR DONORS ($10,000+) OTHER CONTRIBUTORS AmeriHealth Caritas Aramark Bank of America The Boeing Company CIGNA City of Philadelphia /OHCD Comcast Corporation Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Dilworth Paxson LLP Enterprise Holdings Independence Blue Cross Phyllis & Robert Keyes Lincoln Financial Group National Urban League The Patricia Kind Family Foundation PECO The Philadelphia Foundation PNC Bank School District of Philadelphia / Gear Up Schott Foundation Sunoco Foundation Swim Valley Club TD Bank, N.A.
