Jimmie Perryman was one of the original entrepreneurs— realizing that if a black man could not find a job, he could start his own business and hire others. In 1998, Jimmie’s son, Angelo Perryman, established the company in Philadelphia. Angelo serves as President and CEO. Keeping it in the family, daughter Angelina is company Vice President of Administration and son Anthony recently came on board as a project engineer. The West Philadelphia-based firm offers a full range of commercial project management and general construction services. The firm’s portfolio includes the Pennsylvania Convention Center expansion, Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education, the West Oak Lane Charter School, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and the Lincoln Financial Stadium. Recently, the company was recognized as the 2013 Family Business of the Year by the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. Perryman Building and Construction Services exemplifies the model of empowerment and entrepreneurship advocated by the Urban League movement. It gives us great pleasure to present the company with The Spirit of Innovation Award. VISION AWARD Independence Blue Cross (IBC) is the leading health insurer in southeastern Pennsylvania. With its affiliates, IBC serves more than 7.5 million people nationwide, including 2.2 million in the region. For more than 75 years, IBC has been enhancing the health and wellness of the people and communities it serves by delivering innovative and competitively priced health care products and services; pioneering new ways to reward doctors, hospitals, and other health care professionals for coordinated, quality care; and supporting programs and events that promote wellness. IBC respects the diversity of its customers and believes by embracing diversity and inclusion among its associates, the company better serves its customers. The company culture is one of openness, integrity, and respect, and IBC wholly supports the varied backgrounds and viewpoints of its workforce. Another essential way IBC supports diversity is through its work with suppliers. Having a strong supplier diversity program in place enables IBC to meet its business needs effectively while also supporting our community. IBC actively cultivates and values relationships with minority-owned and women-owned businesses. Independence Blue Cross has been a strong supporter of The Urban League of Philadelphia and a title sponsor of last year’s National Urban League Conference. The Urban League is proud to honor IBC with this year’s Vision Award. POWER OF DIVERSITY LEADERSHIP AWARD Patricia A. Coulter is celebrating 12 years as the President and CEO of The Urban League of Philadelphia. As she concludes her dynamic term of leadership, we are proud to present her with the Power of Diversity Leadership Award. Under Ms. Coulter’s direction, ULP has been named a five-star affiliate three years in a row—one of only a handful of the organization’s 95 affiliates to be singled out for the strength of their economic base and for their programming. Ms. Coulter spearheaded the creation of ULP’s Career Center, which serves more than 500 people a year, providing job training, coaching, interviewing and other services for job seekers free of charge. The ULP’s privately funded Connect to Work program—a six-week workforce development program that prepares job seekers to work in the customer service industry—has placed 87 percent of its graduates in jobs before the end of the course. In 2008, ULP opened an Entrepreneurship Center to help small businesses grow and thrive. As these businesses expand, they are able to hire new workers, thus supporting job creation. Under Ms. Coulter’s leadership, the ULP began a scholarship program in 2002— awarding $12,000 to six students. At the 2014 Empowerment Legacy Gala, ULP’s goal is to award more than $120,000 to 75 students. The scholarship program has expanded its outreach to young people by offering workshops in financial planning and effective social media. Six years ago, she initiated the CEO Symposium to illuminate the lack of African American talent in the C-Suites and on corporate boards. Planned as a one-time event, the symposium is now an important annual forum for CEO’s to talk peer to peer about diversity and inclusion. Ms. Coulter has truly used her power as a leader to move the diversity needle throughout the Greater Philadelphia Region. Directors GALA CO-CHAIRS David L.
