It is my privilege to welcome you to the Third Annual California Diversity & Leadership Conference. This year’s
theme is “Deconstructing California’s Glass Ceiling.” As the California area experiences demographic changes, along
with these changes come opportunities: Opportunities for corporation to expand their market share, opportunities
for greater diversity of thought, opportunities for greater innovation, opportunities for organization to recruit from a
greater diverse pool of candidates, opportunities to examine your corporate culture to ensure that your workplace is a
place of inclusion, opportunities for organizations to become a Community Champion for Diversity & Inclusion and
finally the opportunity for everyone to value & respect differences.
I am extremely excited about this conference as 2012 marks the re-launch of the California Diversity Council. The
purpose of this conference is three fold. First, the conference is obviously a great place for professional development.
The list of excellent speakers and the various sessions on diversity and leadership will definitely give one tremendous
insight. Second, the conference is about community. It gives the California Community a forum to have dialogue on
very important topics that affect each and everyone one of us every day. Open dialogue is essential for progress. Third,
the conference is all about the future of California. As each day passes, this region becomes more and more diverse. If
companies and organizations do not learn how to successfully leverage & manage diversity, it will be very challenging
for them to stay competitive.
I want to thank our sponsors for their financial support. Without their support, there would be no California Leadership
Conference. Please take note of our sponsors and support them when possible. Second, I want to say “Thank You” to our
speakers who have made a commitment to be here for this conference. Many have traveled in order to participate and
I greatly appreciate their support. Finally, I would like to thank the organizers of the conference for a job well done.
Thanks,

HONORARY CHAIR WELCOME
DiversityFIRST™ AWARD LUNCHEON KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Robert J. Birgeneau
Chancellor, University of California Berkeley
Donna Brazile
Veteran Democratic Political Strategist, Founder and Managing Director Brazile & Associates LLC
The University of California Berkeley is honored to be hosting the third annual California Diversity and Leadership
Conference. As Chancellor of UC Berkeley and Honorary Chair, I extend a warm invitation to you to join us.
A New Orleans native, Ms. Brazile began her political career at the age of nine when she worked to elect a City
Council candidate who had promised to build a playground in her neighborhood; the candidate won, the swing sets
was installed, and a lifelong passion for political progress was ignited. Four decades and innumerable state and local
campaigns later, Ms. Brazile has worked on every presidential campaign from 1976 through 2000, when she served
as campaign manager for former Vice President Al Gore, becoming the first African-American woman to manage a
presidential campaign.
Begun in 2004 by Dennis Kennedy, Founder and CEO of the National Diversity Council, there are now nine state
councils that bring together educators, professionals and business leaders to work together as leaders for change to
make our workplaces and our communities more equitable, inclusive and diverse.
UC Berkeley is proud to be leading transformative change in our universities. UC Berkeley has always been motivated
by serving the public good and we see no higher ideal than working for equity and inclusion for all. We are the first
campus of the ten-campus University of California system to establish the portfolio of Vice-Chancellor for Equity and
Inclusion and one of the first in the nation to do so. We have created the Haas Diversity Research Center to support
research to generate specific prescriptions for changes in policy and practice that address disparities related to race,
ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and socioeconomics in California and nationwide.
It is with great pleasure that we welcome the California Diversity and Leadership Conference to examine the theme
of “Deconstructing the California Glass Ceiling” for underrepresented minorities and women. With distinguished
and influential keynote speakers such as Donna Brazile and Cornel West, the conference will no doubt promote deep
insights into the challenges that are still to be overcome and the opportunities for change and personal leadership
growth.
Author of the best-selling memoir Cooking with Grease: Stirring the Pots in American Politics, Ms. Brazile is an
adjunct professor at Georgetown University, a syndicated newspaper columnist for United Media, a columnist for Ms.
Magazine, and an on-air contributor to CNN, NPR, and ABC, where she regularly appears on This Week with George
Stephanopoulos.
In August 2009, O, The Oprah Magazine chose Ms. Brazile as one of its 20 remarkable visionaries for the magazines
first-ever O Power List. In addition, she was named among the 100 Most Powerful Women by Washingtonian magazine,
Top 50 Women in America by Essence magazine, and received the Congressional Black Caucus Foundations highest
award for political achievement. Ms. Brazile is the proud recipient of honorary doctorate degrees from Louisiana State
University and Xavier University of Louisiana.
Ms. Brazile is founder and managing director of Brazile & Associates LLC, a general consulting, grassroots advocacy,
and training firm based in Washington, D.C.
I look forward to welcoming you on the Berkeley campus on February 2nd and 3rd, 2012.

CLOSING KEYNOTE SPEAKER
EVENT EMCEES
Stefanie Cruz
FOX40 News Anchor
Stefanie is the news anchor for FOX40 NEWS at 5:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.
Stefanie is no stranger to viewers in Sacramento. She served as news anchor/producer for the past
six years at Good Day Sacramento.
Prior to that, Stefanie served as anchor and reporter for WVIT-TV in Hartford, Connecticut.
In the days following Sept. 11th, Stefanie was sent to Ground Zero to report on the relief and
recovery efforts.
Stefanie got her start in Yuma, Arizona. She started the Imperial Valley bureau at KSWT-TV.
There, she had the opportunity to report on life along and south of the border. Stefanie then
moved to the Quad Cities and reported for KWQC-TV, where she met her husband, Jason. They
have two children and are happy to be back in Northern California.
Dr. Cornel West
Professor, Princeton University
One of America’s most provocative public intellectuals, Cornel West has been a champion for racial justice since
childhood. His writing, speaking, and teaching weave together the traditions of the Black Baptist Church, progressive
politics, and jazz. The New York Times has praised his “ferocious moral vision.” Currently the Class of 1943 University
Professor in the Center for African American Studies at Princeton. West burst onto the national scene in 1993 with
his best-selling book, Race Matters, a searing analysis of racism in American democracy. Race Matters has become a
contemporary classic, selling more than half a million copies to date.
In his long awaited life story, BROTHER WEST: Living and Loving Out Loud, A Memoir, West offers a compelling
exploration of his heart behind the human mind. Themes include Faith, Family, Philosophy, Love, and Service. He
has published 17 other books and has edited 13 texts. West also offers commentary weekly on The Tavis Smiley Show
from PRI (Public Radio International). He was an influential force in developing the storyline for the popular Matrix
movie trilogy and has served as its official spokesperson, as well as playing a recurring role in the final two films. West
graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University and has a Ph.D. from Princeton.
His CDs, Sketches of My Culture and Street Knowledge highlight his belief that growing divisions in our society foster
the despair and distrust that undermines our democratic process. By working to create an ongoing dialogue between the
myriad of voices in our culture, Dr. West is vigilant in his efforts to restore hope to America. His latest collaboration on
Raheem DeVaughn’s CD, The Love & War MasterPeace is a tale of two tales through love and war, while taking us on a
journey through today’s social and political issues. He is a mesmerizing speaker, dynamic philosopher, and enlightened
activist. With astute intellect and ferocious moral vision, Dr. West continuously challenges modern thought with great
efficacy.
As a member of the community outreach committee for My Sister’s House, Stefanie helps Sacramento’s only domestic
violence shelter for Asian Pacific Islander women. In 2007, she was awarded the Hero of Hope award for her work.
Stefanie has also enjoyed running in several Sacramento-area races including: the Cowtown half and the Shamrock half
marathons.
Stefanie is the author of the children’s book Delta & Dawn: Mother & Baby Whales’ Journey. She was inspired when
she covered the whales’ two-week journey in the Sacramento River.

KTXL, Channel 40.

Stephens
According to most observers the best leaders have a sense of style, poise, and self-confidence and
charisma among other “type A” qualities. Many people associate these characteristics with good
leadership and pin point those who may or may not fit the bill. So what about those who are not
strong in these areas or have more passive personalities? Is all lost for them in the progressing in the
world of leadership? According to Debra Benton author of “Executive Charisma” and “How to Think
Like a CEO,” the answer is unequivocally no. She believes that “leadership can absolutely be learned
