As you are aware, the recent
tragedy in Haiti has hit close
to home for many in South
Florida, Boca Raton and our
own club. We have a large
Haitian staff, as do many of
the clubs in the area, who
were directly affected by the
earthquake. Our request for
donations for the people in Haiti was met with
an immediate and overwhelming response
from both members and staff.

Medishare shortly following our email
request, and were delivered immediately by
their air transport team directly into Port Au
Prince, Haiti. One of our members, Dr. Laurie
Kardon, who has volunteered for many
disaster relief medical missions, worked with
me to arrange this. Dr Kardon has supported
Project Medishare both personally and
through her affiliation with MDNow Urgent
Care Centers specifically because this
organization has had a strong presence in
Haiti since 1995, and as such they have
been able to fly directly into Haiti 2 - 3 flights
daily with medical supplies and other donated
items. More importantly, all supplies and
donations will be directly utilized in those
Donations For Haiti
areas and for the people in Haiti that need
them the most.
On behalf of the club, we would like to thank
everyone for their donations and the heartfelt
sympathy and prayers for our staff
members. We will continue to follow the
events there and do whatever possible to
assist the Haitian people and our staff
members and their families in the coming
months.

President’s Message
Dear Members,
This season is passing very quickly, and what a season it is. Members are
using our facilities and taking advantage of special events more than ever
before. Our Food and
Beverage venues are all
crowded and, on many
nights, sold out We
served over 900 members for Thanksgiving
dinner and over 1,000 for New Years Eve
in 3 venues. Our dinner nights at the main
club regularly attract over 250 members
and Friday night dinners at the Old Course
are always sold out. Special events, such
as wine tastings and wine pairing dinners,
are also always sell outs.
Our Social program, under the direction of
Al & Sue Salkeld and the Social Committee,
is filled with events that members flock to.
The shows that they book, whether “on
campus” or off are always sell outs. This is
the 2nd year of our 92nd Street “Y” program
which has also been well received. The House
and Theme Committees, which plan all of
the Theme Events and Dinner-Dances,
continues to do a great job for all.
The Broken Sound Tennis program, arguably
the best in Palm Beach County, continues
to grow under the direction of Greg
Wheaton, his staff and the Tennis
Committee. Our Junior Tennis program now
has 120 participants. We recently
completed our Club Championship matches
in Golf on both courses as well as the
Governors Cup. (See pgs.5 & 7 for details)
And once again our Member-Guest
tournaments are sell outs. Our Fitness
Center, under the direction of Michael
Tompkins, keeps adding classes and these
keep filling up. Members are certainly
showing their interest in having more fitness
activities, consistent with today’s increased
focus on fitness at all ages.
All of the above contributed to Broken Sound
being awarded Platinum Club status this year.
We started working towards this
achievement three years ago and it is
gratifying to receive this recognition. It is a
great honor to be selected as one of the top
200 private clubs in the U.S. out of the more
than 6,000 private clubs that exist.

Our recently approved renovation plan has
started moving towards implementation.
Bank documents have been signed, final
contracts are being reviewed by our attorney,
and on Feb.11th we held our first meeting
with the Planning and Zoning Commission of
Boca Raton. This was the first step in the
process of securing our necessary building
permits. As soon as we have definite dates
for construction we will notify the membership
but we are still looking to follow the schedule
that was laid out in the presentation
brochure. If you think that you’ve seen Mr.
Crean moving fast in the past, just watch his
pace once the construction starts.

The next two months have a full schedule of
activities and events here at Broken Sound.
We will also have our election for seats on
the Board of Governors, with Candidates’
Night set for March 15 th and our annual
meeting and announcement of the election
results on April 26th.

our members with a wide variety of

brunch and concluding with cocktails, hors
d’oeurves and dinner. The infamous “Mr.
Big” made an appearance on the 10th hole,
where the ladies hit at him, rather than on
him. We are currently preparing for the
Men’s Member Guest. Watch for news on
the event as it becomes available.

Something must have been in the air on January
8th as Paul Kessler had his first hole in one on the
third hole. Sal Caragliano jarred a seven iron
the first hole for an eagle. Karen Rosenberg
also made a hole in one on the 4th of February
with a 5 iron on hole # 12.
Ruling on the 18th Green
Play is not permitted from the seasonal flowers
circling the 18th green. If your ball lands in the
flowers, you MUST establish the nearest point
of relief, no nearer to the hole, and may take
one club length from there.
Summer Golf
As summer approaches the leagues are all getting
ready for competition throughout the county.
This includes 18 Hole Men’s, 18 Hole Ladies and
9 Hole Ladies. Just because summer is here does
not mean that instruction is over. We will have
summer game improvement program clinics and
on course instruction.

GUEST MIXER
As usual the Member Guest Tournaments at Broken Sound are compared to no other.
With spring in the air comes the final matches
of the President’s Cup and Club Championship
Series. Members underwent a day of strokeplay qualifying for seeding purposes. Once
the seeding was accomplished, the format
changed to match play. Congratulations to
the President’s Cup winners and runnersup. On the Men’s side, Ken Thomas took
top honors, defeating Elliot Roth in the final
match. In the Ladies’ bracket, Bonnie
Rappaport defeated Nancy Jo Feinberg to
win the cup. Congratulations on stellar play
and dedication over the course of the event.
The Club Championship, which is a two week
event, seeds eight players from each flight
during a day of stroke play. Upon completion
of stroke play qualifying, matches are played
to narrow the field to two players in their
respective flights. The final matches were
played on Sunday, 14 February.

The Club Course fairways held up very well
through the tough cold months due to having
cart paths totally around the course and
much better quality soil than the Old Course.
There is also 30 more acres to disperse
cart traffic around that makes for less wear
and tear from all the play. We purchased a
few inexpensive greens mower brushes after
using our mechanical ones that were way
to hard on the greens, especially #7 after
we grew it back in from the disease
problems of last summer. This has helped
us get the greens more consistent, a bit
faster and hold the line on putts better.

Protecting The Course
The Club Course staff is concerned with
protecting the golf course. Do you ever
wonder why we have so many stakes with
rope blocking areas during the winter? We
set them up and move them frequently to
deter carts from taking the same route.
During the winter months, grass grows
slowly and it becomes brown and dry from
constant cart travel. This is especially evident
around the greens where members with
handicap flags and privileges drive and park
carts. Members with handicap flags must
go directly to the grapefruit-like ball and exit
the same way. Additionally, the ranger will
report those who do not rake bunkers, those
who do not place sand in divots and those
who do not repair ball marks on the green.
Before you putt, you should repair your ball
mark and at least one other you see on the
green. The flagstick should also be replaced
completely. We see many left on the ground
or resting against the edge of the hole. This
damages the lip and affects putting
immensely. It is not only proper etiquette,
but tradition among golfers, to leave the
course in better condition when leaving the
18th green than it was found when starting
the day’s round. We appreciate your
cooperation and vigilant effort to keep our
golf course in great shape.

Although, we do not anticipate much
interference in their work, there could be
some issues on #12 when the work centers
in front of the green and tees as the
protection of the workers will be key. This
will all be discussed and scheduled in advance
with more information to be provided as we
get into specifics with a possible temporary
green or even skipping the hole when they
are directly in the line of play, except in
tournaments.
We are continuing to push forward with the
Audubon Sanctuary Certification Program
on this course. We are filling out appropriate
forms and doing case studies to meet
environmental guide lines for the certification.

We had a great field and participation.

with a 19 under par score of 53.
The summer is approaching and we have
many events still remaining including the
Governor’s Cup, Men’s Mixer, Men’s and

as participation has been at its highest.
As always a friendly reminder to continue

The Club Championship and

are completed as we move
on to the multiple member
guests’, which makes for a busy couple of
months. We will be pushing the grass to
grow as much as we can in the fairways to
get us into the heat and increased sunshine
in the spring months.
As of today we have no major projects in
store for out of the season work, other
than, growing the turf as thick as we can
for you and ready it for next season. We
will be leveling the sprinkler heads in the
fairways, on the tees and around the greens
as we have gone 7 years since their
installation and the turf has grown up several
inches in those years to make them too
deep and a bit inefficient.

Cold Weather Landscape Analysis from
Landscape Creations:

Many of the plants took a beating from the
unusually cold weather we had in early January.
A major symptom of this is the defoliation or
leaf loss that is seen in many small plants, such
as, crotons, Nora Grant ixoras, gold mounds
and copper leafs as well as larger varieties, such
as, Cassia trees, Pink Tabebuia, Japanese ferns,
Dusia, Royal Poinciana, Fichus and
Bougainvillea, among others. Some of the palms
which were hardest hit were the Bottle Palms
and the Coconut Palms. Rest assured that
everything will come back.
We have been in touch with major local growers,
farmers and chemical suppliers in order to
determine if anything can be done to aid in the
recovery of these plants. We have received many
different opinions but the common consensus
has been that, no matter how unsightly the
plants may be without their full foliage, this is
not the time to cut away the dead looking
branches. If this is done it could send the plants
into shock and actually prevent them from any
chance of recovery! This includes the palms –
trimming off the worst of the very brown
fronds is ok but they should not be trimmed too
much until the weather warms. Another
important key is not to water too heavily
because the ground does not dry out as quickly
in the cold and large amounts of water sitting
around the roots can cause root rot and other
types of fungus.

Many experts suggest using a liquid fertilizer
which may help the new growth come in
slightly faster but they urge that results will not
be seen overnight. Full recovery will take weeks
and, in some cases, even months. Please give
your plants several months of warmer weather
to recover in order to determine the extent of
damage and if trimming or replacement will be
necessary. One very easy way to check if a branch
or plant is alive is to use your thumb nail to
scratch the bark; if it is a bright green under the
bark then it is alive. If you see a sick yellowish
green, tan, or brown it is not alive and will need
cut back or replaced.
All-i-Gator is back. She has been co-habitating over
on #5 hole of the Old Course. She had her young
almost two years ago and has been around very
little since then. Last we saw of her she was 6' long
but now has bulked up and stretches almost 8'
long now. This day that Joe Hubbard took the
picture, he could walk right up to her and pet her
as the temperature was in the 40’s ....she was very
cold.

Spring is in the air, none too soon for all of us, as this winter season has not been the best
weather. The excessive cloud cover for weeks on end and the record cold took a toll on our
annuals, shrubs, fish and trees with the Bermuda grass fairways and roughs having a tough
time of it trying to grow and stay green. Winters like this you just do the best you can to
curtail as much damage as you can from Mother Nature and try making the golf courses as
presentable as possible. From what I understand our courses did much better than several
courses in the area while courses in North Palm Beach County and further up really took
some hits from the cold, turning totally brown.
Even though we did have large fish kills from the cold as did hundreds of other communities in
south Florida, there are still large numbers of native fish in all the lakes. The fish from the
tropics of South America (blue Talapia, chiclids, etc.) made up the largest percent of the fish
mortality. It was reported by the news that over 110 manatees died as did turtles, large
snook and tarpon populations along the coastal waters. We will recover as time goes by on all
ends as the heat and SUNSHINE return. Remember, it needs to be 64 degrees as the night
time low and 80’s minimum daytime with lots of sunshine for the Bermuda and Seashore
paspalum to begin to regenerate steady growth again.

Dear Members,
It is with great excitement that I greet you once again. It seems like just
yesterday that I was writing about the beginning of the season. The time is
just flying by.
The months of January
and February were filled
with highly successful events. Just to
mention one of many, the Wine Pairing
Dinner turned out to be a great success!
The event was a perfect combination of
excellent wines, exquisite food and uplifting
atmosphere. Paraphrasing Martin H.
Fischer we should not forget that the flavors
of wine and cheese depend upon the types
of microorganisms present during
fermentation. That perfect atmosphere and
the graceful presence of all key elements
make a dinner into a special event.
One of our goals in the Food and Beverage
department is to provide our members with
a complete ‘dining experience’. Ala Carte
dinner nights provide our staff with the
opportunity to expand our creativity. In turn,
we ask that members arrive prepared to
take pleasure in the exquisite ambience and
fine cuisine; order a fine bottle of wine from
our excellent wine list, enjoy your guests
and complete the evening with a delectable
dessert.
We do need to remind everyone that all
complimentary food – located at the Centre
Court Café for Bagel Breakfast, Ladies and
Men’s Card and Locker Rooms – are to be
consumed on club premises.
In the midst of our season, our calendar is
bursting. Each week is filled with community
dinners, club events, private parties and
golf tournaments. Our staff is working
tirelessly to ensure that each event is a
complete success. We recommend that
all communities book dates for their annual
dinners one year in advance. We continue
to book events every day, even into 2012!
To make dinner reservations at the Main
Clubhouse and the Old Course please call

We do not take
reservations at the Hostess Podiums.
Please ensure that your guests are aware
of our dress code and remember that we have
a cancellation policy. For regular dinners,
reservations may be cancelled up to six (6)
hours prior. Failure to cancel or a no-show
will result in a charge of $15 per person for
each member of the party. Making a
reservation and failing to appear deprives other
members of the opportunity to have dinner at
the club. Complete dining policies are on our
website. Since the implementation of the
Reservations System the Diner’s experience
has been enhanced at Broken Sound Club.
Keep in mind, that when making a reservation,
please make sure you take note of the
Confirmation Number that will be provided to
you. Have your membership number ready
when calling. An automated e-mail with subject
line “New Reservation” or “Reservation
Cancelled” will be sent as a confirmation,
making it easier for members to follow up on
their dining commitments. Please update your
e-mail addresses with the Membership
Department’s Jean Ouellette to make sure you
receive these messages.
Most importantly, please note that your
reservation time, is the time you are supposed
to be seated at your table in the dining room.
If you desire to enjoy a cocktail or hors
d’oeuvres before dinner, please allow time
accordingly. Our management and hostesses
have been instructed to strictly enforce
reservation times. If you go beyond your
reservation time, management will
accommodate you when time allows.

with a question we have been pondering on
for a while: “Do vegetarians eat animal

Valley of the Alley
What are you afraid of? Let
me guess...THE ALLEY.
There you are, standing
closer and closer to the
doubles alley challenging your
opponent to hit the ball down
the line. Meanwhile the alley
is only 4’6" wide and from the middle of the adbox to the middle of the deuce box is 13’6". So you
hover, protecting the smallest area of the court as
the ball continues to travel cross court over and
over again. When you fall into the valley of the alley,
you allow your opponent to take control from the
baseline as you watch the ball go back and forth
missing opportunities to finish the point with a
volley. Remember, when you are at the net you
are in a commanding position looking for
opportunities to put the ball away. So, in a one
up, one back versus one up one back scenario, if
you are at the net stay involved by standing more
in the middle of the service box (unless the ball is
hit out wide) daring them to hit the ball down the
alley. By doing this you will make the court seem
smaller for your opponent at the baseline.
Maintain a good position at the net and don’t fall
into the “VALLEY OF THE ALLEY”

Pro-Am tournament. At the same time we

tournament featuring many top notch local
pros in the area.

Broken Sound is proud to host the second
USPTA Grand Prix tournament of the 2010
season. Pros from the state of Florida will
compete in the first of five stops for an exciting
tournament season. There is a Pro-Am on
Sunday at 9:00am for the tennis members
of Broken Sound. This event will require a
sign up. Come out and watch some of the
best tennis the USPTA has to offer.

Comprehensive Cancer Center. Our Winter
Card Party Brunch was very successful. We
had a FULL house!
The mystery White Elephant Auction was an
event not to be missed! The Old Course tables
were decorated with a Chinese theme and
menu. Most exciting was the mystery auction
with wrapped gifts and riddles about the
contents. The auction included services by
six Broken Sound men: golf lessons,
computer lessons, a gourmet chef, etc. You

collection of books gathered together more
for their artistic expression and aesthetic
interest than their informational content.
Both art and book lovers should enjoy this
special tour. Then, on April 12, at 7 pm,
we will hear from the Regional Director of
the Anti-Defamation League, Rabbi Andrew
Rosencranz, about the problem of growing
anti-semitism particularly on college
campuses. A recent incident where Muslim
students tried to prevent the Israel’s US
Ambassador Michael Oren from presenting
his remarks at the University of California is
a timely example of this growing problem.

A Charity Challenge
held its annual fundraiser golf tournament on
Thursday, January 21 and its evening affair on
Friday, January 22. We were fortunate to have
Mr. Crean make his debut as an auctioneer,
riding into the dining room on an Electric Bike
donated by Bob and Joan Bettinger! It was a
wonderful evening of great food, lots to drink,
a marvelous band and exciting silent and live
auction items. This year we honored Howard
and Phyllis David for their time and effort in
fundraising activities. Howard’s speech
reminded us of what a wonderful community
we are and the importance of raising funds for
cancer research.

The greens on the Old Course last year were voted the best on the Allianz Champions Tour while
the greens this year were said to be the best many of them have ever putted on both tours. That is
humbling to say the least coming from some of the world’s greatest players of our time. The crew
under Phil Peterson, Superintendent and Mike Ekleberry, Assistant Super along with Etienne’s
crew from the Club Course working double duty did an excellent job once again. The tour officials
tell me that Broken Sound is one of their favorite stops on the Tour.
