13. Cedar Hill Cemetery and
Soldiers Rest

Commonly known as City Cemetery,
graves in the sprawling graveyard
represent more than 150 years of history
in Vicksburg. Epitaphs tell of sorrow
and joy, good times and bad. A section
of Cedar Hill Cemetery established by
the United Daughters of the Confederacy
contains the graves of 5,000 Confederate
soldiers who died during the Siege of
Vicksburg.

Pemberton’s Headquarters is the residence that Confederate Lt. General John
C. Pemberton occupied during the Siege
of Vicksburg, led by Union Major General

Ulysses S. Grant from May 23 to July 4,
1863. It was in this building that
Pemberton held a council of his chief
officers on July 3, 1863 to discuss plans
for surrender of the city, which occurred
the following day. The campaign for
Vicksburg is considered by many military
historians to have been the most critical
campaign of the Civil War, as it severed
the Confederacy geographically and cut
vital supply lines to the Confederate
states and thus was pivotal in bringing
about the Confederacy's defeat.

38. USS Cairo Museum
Located in the Vicksburg National
Military Park, 3201 Clay Street

U.S.S. Cairo (pronounced Care-o),
the Union ironclad commanded by
Thomas O. Selfridge, Jr., was named
for Cairo, Illinois, and commissioned on
January 16, 1862. On December 12, 1862,
in the Yazoo River north of Vicksburg,
Cairo was struck by two underwater
torpedoes (today called mines) sinking
in less than 12 minutes with no loss of
life. Preserved by mud and silt, Cairo
sat on the bottom of the Yazoo River for
102 years. It was raised in 1964, and
later restored. The ironclad, the last
remaining of its kind, is now on display
within Vicksburg National Military Park.

38. Vicksburg National Cemetery
Located by the USS Cairo in the
Vicksburg National Military Park,
3201 Clay Street
Vicksburg National Cemetery is the
second largest national cemetery
embracing 116 acres inside the Vicksburg
National Military Park. It holds the
remains of 17,000 Civil War Union
soldiers, a number unmatched by any
other national cemetery.

At the Visitors Center, a 20-minute film
which recounts the campaign is shown
on the hour and half hour, beginning at
8:05 am. The last film begins at 4:30 pm;
the theater seats 125 people. Guided
tours are available, and reservations are
recommended (See Personal Guided
Tours section on page 9). The park
commemorates the campaign, siege,
and defense of Vicksburg in 1863 and
includes over 1,340 monuments, markers
and plaques, a 16-mile tour road, a
restored Union gunboat, and a national
cemetery. CD’s are available at the
Visitors Center, where life-sized exhibits
and artifacts from the siege of Vicksburg
are on display.

The museum offers a glimpse at what
life is like along the river – examining
both the risks and benefits of living so
close to the water. The museum has an
orientation theater, classroom space
and an assortment of interactive and
educational displays for all ages. Through
both interactive and static displays,
visitors can explore the river’s past,
examine the science behind water
movement, and even learn about the
future plans for the Mississippi Valley.
Tours on board the Motor Vessel
Mississippi IV give visitors a feel for life
on board the boat through interactive
displays, a variety of historical items
and a boat simulator in the pilothouse.
Children can play on a scale model of
the river between Greenville and
Vicksburg, which is behind the main
exhibit hall along Levee Street.

When Teddy Roosevelt came to
Vicksburg, he visited the Old Court
House. So did Jefferson Davis, Booker
T. Washington, William McKinley, and U.S.
Grant – and so should you. Vicksburg’s
crown jewel both architecturally and
historically, this National Landmark
towers above the city on a hill hallowed
by history. It was on these grounds that
Jefferson Davis launched his political
career; it was here on July 4, 1863 that
the Stars and Stripes replaced the Stars
and Bars, signifying the end to the
47-day siege. It has been a museum
since 1948, filled with items reflecting the
Southern Heritage, from pre-Columbian
artifacts to fine portraits, furniture, china,
silver, toys, tools, clothing and the largest
collection of Civil War memorabilia in the
South. Relics available in unique gift shop.

To fully understand the Vicksburg
Campaign and Siege and the Vicksburg
National Military Park, you must first
grasp the terrain, the leaders and their
strategies and the people who endured
the horrendous 47-day siege. This is
brought to life by the 250-square foot
diorama of the battlefield with 2,300
miniature soldiers and the film “The
Vanishing Glory”. The museum houses
250 ship models, with exhibits of tow
boats and river boats, large Civil War
gunboat collections and U.S. Navy
vessels named for people and places
in Mississippi. Also featured are model
railroads in “HO” scale, “N” scale and
“O” gauge, with railroading artifacts.
150 model cars cover the development
of the automobile. An architectural display with models depicting the different
styles of architecture in Vicksburg. More
than 40 original paintings of war on the
river and Civil War artifacts.
Tours are self-guided. Museum personnel

to present day. The museum houses
one of the largest collections in the
United States of rare 19th and 20th
century French and German bisque
dolls, displays of antique Teddy Bears
(Steiff and others), Shirley Temple dolls
(1934 to present), Madame Alexanders,
movie star dolls, composition dolls,
Barbies, current artist dolls, doll houses
and carriages, and doll accessories.
Boys’ toys include trains, pedal cars,
rocking horses, G.I. Joes, toy soldiers,
cars, planes, trucks, guns, and construction and farm equipment. The museum
gift shop offers an array of artist dolls,
Southern Belles, collector dolls, paper

Licensed National Military Park Guides
Guides have made history come alive
since the 1950s. The guides offer visitors
the unique opportunity to explore the
battlefield and city with a professional
who has excellent knowledge of civilian life and the siege and defense of
Vicksburg in the spring and summer of
1863. Tours are based on 2 hours in
length and are easily arranged for individuals, families, and groups of all sizes.
Guides must ride in the visitor’s vehicle
since they are not permitted to provide
transportation.

4. Anshe Chesed Cemetery

Public access except on Saturday.
Evidence of a once robust Jewish
community, the cemetery dates back to
1864. A lunette fortification was built on
the property by the Confederacy. On
May 19 and 22, 1863, it was the site of
fierce fighting and bloodshed. In 1864,
the property was sold to the Anshe
Chesed Congregation.

7. Bethel AME Church

The first African Methodist Episcopal
Church in Mississippi and the first
Masonic Lodge in Mississippi were
organized here in 1875. In 1890,
Campbell College, the first African
American College in Mississippi established without the aid of whites, operated
out of a building behind Bethel. The
college moved to Jackson, MS in 1897
and was absorbed by Jackson State
University.

The only African-American cemetery
in the city was established by the
Vicksburg Tabernacle #19 Independent
Order of Brothers and Sisters of Love
and Charity around 1884. The final resting
place for members of some of the
prominent African-American families in
Vicksburg’s history. There are more than
5,500 graves scattered across the
grassy tree-studded cemetery, which

One of the first
buildings built for
public assembly in Vicksburg, the cornerstone was laid by Bishop Leonidas
Polk who later served as a Lt. General in
the Confederate Army. In spite of the
shelling during the siege, the Rev. W.
W. Lord conducted daily services.
Many original furnishings are still in
use in the weekly worship services.
Features two Tiffany stained-glass windows. The church was damaged by the
Union gunboats explosive shelling from
the river and the rectory was so badly
damaged that it had to be torn down
and reconstructed around 1873.
Weekly services are held at 8:00 am
and 10:00 am on Sundays and 12:15
pm and 5:30 pm on Wednesdays.

Trinity has
been a place
of spiritual
refreshment for nearly 150 years and
remains an active congregation of the
Diocese of Mississippi. With its slate
roof and steeple, the church can be
spotted from all parts of the city. Noted
in the National Register of Historic Places,
Holy Trinity boasts six Tiffany stained
glass windows and the only known
windows to honor those who died on
both sides in the Civil War. Home to the
Conservatory of Fine Arts. Sunday
worship at 8:00 am and 10:30 am.

23. St. Mary’s Catholic Church

In September 2006, St. Mary’s Catholic
Church celebrated 100 years, a feat of

endurance in itself and beyond all
imaginings and hope for those who
started the church in 1906. Young
German nuns, barely out of their teens
and learning a language in transit, would
make their way to a very strange place
and work among blacks who were hated.
The personal danger these priests and
nuns faced was daunting and all but

66. Wesley United Methodist Church

Wesley's first building was given to
the slaves of the white Methodist
congregation in 1858. The present
building was constructed c. 1950 and
was the home of Vicksburg's first civil

Approximately 30-minute tour.
This breathtaking Italianate mansion sits
atop a bluff overlooking the Mississippi
River and is one of Mississippi’s best

preserved historical homes. It showcases
beautiful oval, arched woodwork and
trim and intricate Bavarian plaster and
gold leaf crown moldings throughout. Four
original chandeliers and many original
antiques adorn its interior. Stunning
gardens feature a 170-year old crepe
myrtle as well as rare and beautiful
camellias, azaleas, dogwoods and
magnolia trees. The Belle Boutique Gift
Shop offers antiques and unique gifts for
its bed and breakfast patrons and visitors.

2. Anchuca Historic Mansion Tour

Tour one of Vicksburg’s most historic
antebellum homes. With humble
beginnings as a wood framed pioneer
home, Anchuca was built in 1830 by
J.W. Maulding. Victor Wilson completed the Greek revival structure we see
today in 1847. Joseph E. Davis, patriarchal brother to President Jefferson
Davis, CSA and owner of the magnificent Warren Co. plantation, Hurricane,
died here in 1870. Most notably the
balcony was the site where Jefferson
Davis greeted neighbors and friends
while visiting his brother in 1869. This
Greek revival landmark is listed in the
National Register of Historic Places.

This 1868 Victorian Italianate home,
located on the bluffs overlooking the
majestic Mississippi River, was built for
Madison Klein in what is now known as
the Historic Garden District. Nibble on lace
cookies while you learn the fascinating
history of one of early Vicksburg’s prominent families. Your personally guided tour
allows you to step back into a more genteel time in history where opulence was
the order of the day. Seasonal decor and
family heirlooms adorn this home which
now serves as a bed and breakfast inn.

A charming bed and breakfast retreat,
this exquisite example of Eastlake
Victorian was built in 1870 by Leona
Baer. The home features handcrafted
American chestnut and black walnut
detailed woodwork. On each side of the
entry are the original large formal parlors –
one for family and one for guests which
also served as the ballroom. The outdoor
privy has received much acclaim as one
of the few 2-story facilities in the region.
Baer House is within walking distance
of museums, restaurants, art galleries,
antique shops, and historical sites of
the Civil War.

Two conflicting stories, one a 53-page
handwritten family history, the other a
researched account of documented
events, address the property from as
early as 1840. Both conclude that the
structure, built by Joseph Bazsinsky as
a town house, remained a home for his
large Jewish family through four generations until early in the twenty-first
century. As the family evolved, the house
evolved and has become an excellent
example of the architectural mysteries
created by changing times, needs, and

in the oldest neighborhood in Vicksburg,
the home was unrecognizable, obscured
by additions and neglect, and its history
untold for nearly a century until it was
fully restored in 2004. It features a two
story veranda, walled garden, parlor,
kitchen, library, and the original slave
quarters. A brief history of slavery may
be included upon request. George

riverfront, artist Robert Dafford’s 32
life-like pictorial murals depict periods

of pink, white and yellow masonry
surrounding the original store building.
The structure is the work of the
Reverend H.D. Dennis, Margaret’s
husband, who promised her years ago,
“If you marry me, I’ll turn your store
into a palace.” This folk art structure,
which stretches more than 100 feet
along Highway 61, is filled with folk
art displays. Store is not currently open
for inside viewing.

Mulvihill and right on Drummond leads
you to early 1900 period homes. From

a unique shopping area, restaurants,
museums and historic homes and end
your tour at the Vicksburg National
Military Park.
SCENIC OVERLOOKS
Two paved, looped drive-thru overlooks
offer spectacular views of the Mississippi
River and both the old and new
Mississippi River bridges. Take Exit 1A
north of Interstate 20 on Washington
Street. Navy Circle is just off the interstate and next to the Mississippi State
Welcome Center. Louisiana Circle is
approximately 1 mile north between
the Ameristar and DiamondJacks casinos
and next to Riverfront Park.

Head south on Highway 61 for an
extension of your historical tour. Visit
Grand Gulf State Park, where Grant’s
troops surprised Confederates who
were guarding the Mississippi River,
and Port Gibson, the town Grant said
was too beautiful to burn. Continue
on to Lorman and have lunch at the
Old Country Store, taking time to see
the Ruins of Windsor. Or pick up the
Natchez Trace, where the scenery is
spectacular, the historical interpretation
is superb, and a perfect spot for a
picnic!

rich farm lands and acres and acres
of cotton and corn growing in the fall.
In Onward, a historical marker marks
the spot of Teddy Roosevelt’s famous
bear hunt where he refused to shoot

Head west on I-20 across the River into
Louisiana and see Grant’s Canal,
annexed as part of the Vicksburg National
Military Park. Also check out the Southern
Heritage Air Museum at the VicksburgTallulah Regional Airport in Mound for a
peek into the world of aviation through
the preservation and exhibition of aircrafts
and other artifacts. Forty-five minutes
from there visit Poverty Point, a National
Historic Landmark and World Heritage
Site that commemorates a culture that
thrived during the first and second
millennia B.C. This site contains some
of the largest prehistoric earth works in
North America. Dated between 1650 and
700 B.C., this site of more than 400
acres is unique among archaeological
sites on this continent.

Spring and fall are always very pleasant
with cool nights and warm, sunny days
with temperatures ranging from lows of
40 to 50 degrees to highs of 70 degrees.
Winter is usually mild except for occasional cold air invasions, which normally
last only a couple of days. Temperatures
range from lows of 30 degrees to highs
of 50 degrees. Summer is consistently
warm, beginning in the low 70 degrees
and climbing to highs ranging from 80
to 90 degrees in the afternoon.
