RED AND WHITE - December 2013
December 2013 Peace & Goodwill The Rhythm of the Season From Superintendent Charles Glaes As we count our blessings this holiday season, at the top of my list are all of the friends, neighbors, and caring citizens who help make our schools great! Vicksburg Community Schools’ staff works hard to provide a safe, nurturing, supportive, and challenging environment where all students can learn at high levels. But there are so many things we don’t have the resources to provide students which can make a huge difference as we strive to fulfill our mission, to maximize the success and potential of all of our students. Here is where our generous volunteers come in, making so many more opportunities possible. So a hearty “Thank you” and “Glad Tidings” to all of those volunteers who do so much for our children, including: Indian Lake, Sunset Lake, and Tobey Elementary Parent Groups, who collectively raise over $50,000 and provide technology, supplies, field trips, fun family activities, and lots of classroom volunteers. Athletic Boosters has raised over $500,000 in the past thirty years to provide scholarships, scoreboards, locker rooms, field upgrades, and equipment. Band Boosters are currently raising funds to replace marching band uniforms, while continuing to make band camp, festival participation, travel, and a 180 member band possible. Generous Hands has worked for almost ten years filling a growing local need of childhood hunger. Over 200 Vicksburg students now receive weekly backpacks of food. Kids Connections provides study buddies, cooking and life skills classes, and a Kids Closet clothing supply for needy students. Warm Kids outfits cold children with new winter clothing each November for over 25 years. STRIVE, a Rotary Club mentor program, connects with VHS seniors at risk of dropping out to motivate, support, and connect to post-high school education. South County Community Services provides emergency services to families, a children’s holiday party, and an annual Backpack Bonanza which issued 150 backpacks full of school supplies to get kids off to a good start. Vicksburg Community Schools Foundation has built an endowment of over $1.5 million while providing scholarships and grants to promote innovation in teaching and learning. Vicksburg Foundation has funded dozens of important improvements and initiatives; including tennis courts, scholarships, outdoor education, security upgrades, and Performing Arts Center technology, and is a strong community partner. Vicksburg Education Association provides grants each year for Vicksburg students to attend camps and other learning and recreation opportunities. Lions Club annual community service day has helped upgrade Sunset Lake’s playground and hallways. Kids Hope, in affiliation with Lakeland Reformed, Vicksburg United Methodist, and Chapman Memorial Churches, mentor and provide study support to children at each elementary school. Vicksburg churches also provide youth and family support throughout the year. Vicksburg District Library builds a strong literacy community through Preschool Story Time, Tweens, and Teen Hangout, and Summer Reading Programs. Vicksburg Little League and Vicksburg Rocket Football make youth sports possible for hundreds of Vicksburg children each year. Girl Scout Troop 80310 enjoying the first snow of the season. Mrs. Jancasz has launched a new mentor program at VMS called PEER-to-PEER. This program offers students the opportunity to be peer mentors to students with disabilities. Peer-to-Peer supports, educates, and advocates for students with disabilities. The program also fosters social skill instruction and modeling as well as building meaningful friendships. A big shout-out to parent volunteer Mr. Joe Klimek who donates a portion of his day every Friday to make popcorn for our students to purchase. Shown here is Mr. Klimek, along with his daughters and a happy customer! VMS wants to thank ALL of our parent volunteers who help with clerical needs, Book Fair and other various tasks around the building. 4 / The Red & White / December 2013 During the American Civil War, soldiers knew when the war was over when the enemy’s flag was captured.
