RED AND WHITE - May | June 2014
May – June 2014
Celebrating Success
From Superintendent Charles Glaes
Thank you, Vicksburg voters, for your support of Vicksburg Community Schools’ $15.485 million, 1.5 mill bond
issue proposal on the May 6th ballot. The strong turnout and favorable response is a strong indication that Vicksburg
cares about its kids and wants to insure that they have safe, secure, comfortable, and up to date learning environments
and opportunities. In addition, we appreciate the trust voters have shown in our District’s sound and conservative fiscal
management.
Documents are being prepared for the first sale of the bonds in June. Simultaneously, final determination of priorities
and projects which can begin this summer and during the 2014-15 school year are being established. We will keep the
community informed in the Red and White and on the District’s website,
www.vicksburgcommunityschools.org.
On behalf of all our staff and students, I once again say, “Thank you, Vicksburg!”

15 Year-Old Leads the List of New W-A-Y
Vicksburg Graduates
The W-A-Y Vicksburg Program, which serves as
the alternative high school for Vicksburg and many
other surrounding areas, is pleased to announce five new
graduates. This makes ten graduates total for the program
since last May.
W-A-Y researchers can graduate on the day they
complete their needed credits, (which can be on any day of
the year, as it is a year-round program) and the program is
expecting more graduates in the coming months and over
the summer. The most recent graduates include:
• Cheyenne Joza- formerly from Decatur Schools.
Cheyenne Intends to enroll at WMU this fall.
• Loretta Liebing - formerly of Climax-Scotts Schools Loretta intends to attend KVCC to start an education as
a teacher.
• Alysia Zimmerman - a former VHS student who is
intending on joining the military.
• Preston Kline- a former VHS student who intends on
attending KVCC in the welding program.
• Elizabeth Briggs - Elizabeth is a 15 year old from
Vicksburg who had difficulty attending VHS due to
medical reasons. She excelled in the WAY program,
earning almost all of her 24 needed credits from home
in a record 15 months! This certainly makes her the
youngest high school graduate in Vicksburg’s history
and possibly the youngest in the state of Michigan.
According to Kristen Hossink, Liz’s team leader and
Michelle Malito, her on-line
mentor, her phenomenal
success had to do with her
ability to work very hard 6 or
seven days a week, completing
projects in the program at a
speed 3-5 times that of most
other students. Liz says it is her
ability to work at her own pace
and achieve her goals as her
ambition drove her that helped Elizabeth Briggs
her get her diploma so soon.
Liz says she wants to attend KVCC and WMU in the future
and is very interested in becoming an on-line educator
herself. Steve Fryling, program director could not be more
proud of all of the graduates and those still working for
their diplomas.
Some of Our Newest Graduates (L to R) Preston Kline, Alysia
Zimmerman, Cheyenne Joza, Loretta Liebing

“Oh, the Places You’ll Go!
Congratulations! Today is your day.
You’re off to Great Places!
You’re off and away!”
Mrs. Bev Hoffman
From Elementary Health Care Aide to VMS office staff,
Mrs. Bev Hoffman has experienced the days of using carbon
paper for duplicates, to the high-tech conveniences of today. Her time here at VCS has spanned well over two decades and
four principals.
Mrs. Hoffman has
managed an abundant
of office responsibilities:
securing substitutes for
teachers, administering
shots and monitoring
our growing number of
students with diabetes,
handling state reporting VMS office secretary Mrs. Bev

spearheaded would be
our annual Give and Take back-to-school event, Sixth Grade
Orientation, assistance with Kid’s Connection, and also
served as secretary representative for VESPA.
Aside from saying goodbye to a veteran office secretary,
VMS will dearly miss our social networking specialist (a
self-appointed position that is an “after hour” voluntary job). Whether one is on maternity or sick leave, she’s organizing
food to be delivered to your house. Holiday seasons; she
adopts a family that needs a boost and rally’s her work family
to pitch-in with gifts and goodies. Mrs. Hoffman confesses,
“I feel it is important to be aware of events in each of our
lives-the sad ones and the happy ones, to build each other up,
to laugh with one another or cry, to complain, congratulate,
to listen or to feed them...whatever it takes to let each one
know they are important and we love them no matter
what!!!”
Gwyn Evans has spent
her entire teaching career,
37 seven years, educating
our youth in Physical
Education right here at
VCS. Throughout the
years she has also been the
Varsity Basketball coach,
the Varsity softball coach, Miss Gwyn Evans says farewell to

Middle School Intramural Coordinator, Middle School
Athletic Director, Critical Incident School Specialist, Critical
Friends Facilitator, and VEA Treasurer. And no matter what
other opportunities were offered or presented, Miss Evans
states, “there’s something special about this community and I
couldn’t leave.”
Reflecting on her time here at VCS, Miss Evans warmly
recalls “working with the student athletes was a privilege.
Many of them stay in touch and it is so rewarding to see the
people they have grown up to be.” She also reflects fondly
on past practices such as PODs, Critical Friends Groups,
and Minds in Motion. “That was an exciting time to be an
educator in this district. We were encouraged to try new
things. If they worked great, and if they didn’t we had our
Critical Friends Groups and our PODs to help us discover
ways to change what didn’t work. Schools had the resources
to allow teachers to grow and learn.”
But above all, she continues, “what I will miss most about
teaching is the relationships I have with the students and staff. I still get excited to come to work every day because I know
I work with people who care about each other and about the

(KAMSC) program! As for starting her mornings without an alarm clock,
Miss Evans retirement plans are far from idle. As a former
member of her high school and college band, she looks
forward to putting music back into her life. Organizing
the “family” photos, keyboarding, learning to play a Native
American Flute she acquired and working in the glass
studio insider her home are a few items on her retirement
“to-do” list. “I need to find an outlet for my competitive side
so maybe Senior Olympics will be in my future too.” Staff
and students will genuinely miss Miss Evan’s steady nature,
seasoned wisdom and overwhelmingly patient demeanor. From Left to Right: Lauren Burke, Emma Blickle, Autumn Locey, Jess
Schmidt, Austin Bresnahan and Alex Smith.

Tobey Elementary
Tobey Winding Down A Big Year
As the school year winds down it is always fun to take a look
back and see all that has been accomplished. This year it sure has
been an enjoyable and exciting one.
Student groups and organizations have been very helpful to
the Tobey community. Student Council got the year started off by
sponsoring the annual food drive. Thanks to their hard work we
were able to donate over 15 large boxes of canned foods to South
County Community Services. The members also sold candy
grams on Valentine’s Day. It was fun to watch the many students
receive their candy grams from friends. The Student Council
members also held a fund raiser with the Leukemia Society.
Through the generosity and dedication of all of the Tobey
students, we were able to donate a little over $500.00 for cancer
research. Another amazing fund raiser was held by our 4th
grade students. The entire 4th grade student body participated
in “Kids to Kids Market Place.” Each 4th grader was responsible
for making a product that could be sold to other students. They
then held the sale on April 29 where the Tobey students came
and purchased the homemade goods. This was a great lesson in
economics and all of the profits, which amounted to $1,215.80,
were donated to Generous Hands.
Another great student organization at Tobey has been our
safety patrol. This is a group of 5th grade students that help
Tobey be the safest place that it can be. These students are in
charge of the hallways, both before and after school, helping the
kindergarten teachers with daily tasks such as putting on boots,
hats and coats for their students, and finally making sure that
everyone is safe on the bus ramp.
All students at Tobey have worked really hard to achieve
their AR goals. That hard work really paid off and we had many,
many classrooms reach Model Classroom Status and Ms. Flynn’s
class even reach Master Classroom status.
Other clubs that help make Tobey such a great place to grow
and learn are The Caring Clubs, (which met all through the year
and help with caring attitudes), Girls on The Run Teams, Battle
of the Books, The Walking Club, The Strings Program and Young
Rembrandts Art Classes.
To wind out the year, the 5th grade students had the
opportunity to write about their “Everyday Hero.” Regan Powell
wrote his essay about Kara who is student at Tobey with Downs
Syndrome. “Just because Kara has Downs Syndrome doesn’t
mean anything when you see her giving her best effort every day.
It just makes your day.” This was a very heartfelt paper and it is
obvious that the students at Tobey Elementary have a great deal
of compassion for entire Tobey Family.
The time seems to go by fast and it is always impressive to
take a look back at what is accomplished in one year!

Sunset Lake Elementary
Video Challenge
The Michigan Department of Education Superintendent’s
Dropout Challenge committee sponsored a Superintendent’s
Dropout Challenge Video Contest. This committee was looking
for original videos that could be shared with schools, districts,
and community organizations to raise awareness of dropout
issues and prevention methods. The video was to highlight early
warning signs of dropping out of school and student enthusiasm
towards school completion.
Jamie Masco organized a group of Sunset Lake students to
participate in this video, and she asked Troy Smith, VHS video
and film instructor, for high school students who would be
willing and able to help create the video.
Jamie teamed up with Hunter Mynier, a senior at VHS, to
create this video. Hunter planned, taped, and edited the video
with assistance from Stuart Thomas and Ashur Elsworth. Both
Thomas and Elsworth also attend VHS.
If the Sunset Lake Elementary video is selected, they will
receive one Apple TV and two Apple iPad 2’s. The video will also
be featured on the Dropout Challenge website at www.michigan.
gov/dropoutchallenge.
Throughout the school year, members of the Sunset School
family have received special awards, honors and recognitions
for their work in and outside the classroom. Sunset students and
staff have many accomplishments of which to be proud. Below
are just a few examples:
• ECSE teacher Angela Spanhak was recently nominated for
the Excellence in Education Award sponsored by KRESA
Special Education Parent Advisory Committee. She was
nominated by parent, Krysti Hildebrand, for going above
and beyond her educational duties.

and Sarah King won a Bardeen Grant to purchase IPads
for their classrooms. These devices will be used for playing
instructional games, accessing online tools to support the
