The loggerhead sea turtle nests May through
October on our beaches. Adult females come
ashore and deposit about 120 eggs in a sand dune.
Sixty days later, hatchlings emerge at night and
head to the ocean. If lights are shining behind the
beach, hatchlings mistake them for the moon and
head that way, which makes them susceptible to
danger. Once in the water, hatchlings swim 60 miles
offshore to the Sargassum seaweed that protects
them while they grow.

As a young army officer, Edgar Allen Poe was stationed for 13 months at
neighboring Sullivan’s Island. Local lore says he did much thinking beneath
a large oak tree on what is now the Links Course’s 13th hole fairway. At
the time, Poe (enlisted under the surname Perry) was just 18; he wrote The
Gold Bug years later, based on his Lowcountry memories.
