Waist Watchers: The Musical! Produced by Philip Roger Roy and Dana Matthow December 23, 2015 – January 24, 2016, Stage West Set in Cook’s Women’s Gym, the show takes a lighthearted look at four adult women dealing with assorted body image issues by using some 25 popular songs with parody lyrics -- in the same vein as Menopause the Musical. The show covers issues like dieting, exercise, plastic surgery, sex over the age of forty, and the relentless search for a positive self-image. Writer/producer Alan Jacobson has cleverly rewritten the lyrics to popular songs to suit the subject at hand, including “Botox Queen” to the tune of ABBA’s “Dancing Queen,” “I Hope I Lose It” to the tune of “I Hope I Get It” from A Chorus Line, and “Viagra” to the tune of “Maria” from West Side Story. Meet Sue and Dan, a couple who after 20 years of marriage have drifted apart. Together they discover a box of photographs that leads them to relive the memories of their past selves. Snapshots re-imagines favorites from Schwartz’s vast catalogue in new and exciting ways in a story in which every couple will see themselves. Becoming Dr. Ruth Produced by Philip Roger Roy and Dana Matthow January 27 – February 28, 2016, Stage West Don’t miss the triumphant story of Karola Siegel, the girl that became “Dr. Ruth”. When she was very young, Karola was forced to leave her family and flee from the Nazis in the Kindertransport. With no home to return to after the war, she joined the Haganah in Jerusalem as a scout and sniper. She married, became a single mother and moved to America to pursue her dreams as Ruth Westheimer. Becoming Dr. Ruth is filled with the humor, honesty and life-affirming spirit of a girl who found her own unique place in this world as America’s most famous sex therapist. By Mark St. Germain. Ghashee w Mashee (the Dumbass) Presented by NGM Entertainment LLC February 6, 2016, Center Stage As if Im Hussein hasn’t already endured sufficient setbacks and struggles to fill years of stage plays, playwright Najee Mondalek sets her up for another crisis – dealing with the ignorance of her know-it-all husband. Tucked in between the lines of the main story are other issues that affect the Arab American community: divorce for infertility, drug abuse, conflict between two generations, welfare fraud, and more. Directed by Aziz Charabaty. Photo by Tim Fuller Fences Produced by Arizona Theatre Company February 11-28, 2016, Center Stage One of the most beloved plays of our time, Fences tells the gripping story of sanitation worker Troy Maxson, a star baseball player whose career was blunted by the racism prevalent in pre-Jackie Robinson America. Feeling his world rapidly changing, Troy builds a fence to protect what is familiar and hold off what threatens. Muscular and lyrical, this August Wilson blockbuster shows what can happen when a strong man is robbed of his dreams.
