The Installer is the official
journal of:
Protecting The Economy Is The Key Election Issue For ‘White Van
Men’ - that's the message from a recent survey for which I am
obliged to IronmongeryDirect.
To win the support of the nation’s ‘White Van Men’ on May 7th,
political parties will need to convince that they can support small
businesses and protect the initial gains of the economic recovery,
according to a new survey.
IronmongeryDirect invited 10,000 tradespeople to give their views
and the study revealed that the economy was the key issue shaping
how tradespeople will choose to vote (a major influence on 56% of
those surveyed) followed by the future of the NHS (52%) and
immigration (49%).
The annual study of the UK trades sector shows how business has
improved over the last 12 months but only marginally, causing the
nation’s tradespeople to remain anxious about the future of their
small businesses.
Fewer tradespeople describe their business as struggling than in
2014 (6.5% rather than 7.1%) and more feel that business is
comfortable (from 40.6% to 43.7%) if not booming.
Of the major political parties, it seems that the Conservatives have
been most successful so far in convincing tradespeople that they
should be trusted to continue the job, with the support of 52% of
tradespeople who expressed a preference, followed by Labour with
21% and UKIP with 14%.
Of the policies tradespeople felt would have the biggest benefit to
their business, freezing rises in fuel duty was the most popular (the
choice of 61% of tradespeople) followed by lowering corporation
tax for small businesses (55%) and cutting red tape in areas such
as employing workers and health and safety (45%).
Wayne Lysaght-Mason, MD at IronmongeryDirect, said: “The views
of UK tradespeople are typical of many small businesses across the
UK. The scars of the recession have not yet healed and, while the
signs of recovery are present, there is concern that the gains made
are fragile and need supporting by whichever party gains power
on May 8th. Looking at the policies favoured by our sample, there
is also clearly an appetite for actions that will have an immediate
impact, reducing costs now and enabling growth so that businesses
can capitalise on the opportunities being presented to them.”
Thanks Wayne for that insight. A new Government will have been
elected by the time you receive the next issue of The Installer...will
they still be there by the time you receive the one in June?

Security Guidance in
Building Regulations
Welcomed by DHF
The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has
welcomed the publication of the long-awaited new
Building Regulations which - for the first time in
England - require new homes to incorporate
provisions to resist unauthorised access.
The new requirement, and the accompanying
Approved Document Q of the Building Regulations
covering door and window security, takes effect in
October this year and will apply to all dwellings in
England.
The new requirement covers main entrance doors,
windows and interlinked doors to integral garages in
houses. The requirement also covers external entrance
doors to apartment blocks and to individual apartment
doors that open into common areas.
The new Approved Document states that doors and
windows will meet the new security requirements if they
can resist physical attack by a casual or opportunist
burglar. To do this they must be both robust and be
fitted with appropriate hardware.
The DHF represents the UK's leading manufacturers
of door and window hardware and locks. Its general
manager and secretary Michael Skelding said:
"We've campaigned alongside Secured by Design for a
long time to have security incorporated into the Building
Regulations. So we are particularly pleased that, at last,
builders of new homes will have to ensure they provide
enhanced levels of security for occupants."
Approved Document Q gives guidance on how the
requirements can be met by installing complete
entrance doorsets which meet the security requirements
of British Standards publication PAS 24:2012 or other
The champion of the Top Gun challenge hosted by
Edgetech is taking on the London to Paris bike ride
to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital in
memory of his daughter, Lacey-Mae.
Graham Carley, Production Manager at Double R
Glass & Roofing Systems, finished on the top spot at
Edgetech’s Top Gun Challenge last year making him
the fastest Super Spacer applicator in the UK. He’ll
be needing that speed when he rides the 300 miles
from London to Paris in just four days this July.
Graham hopes to raise £1,500 for Great Ormond
Street Hospital where his daughter Lacey-Mae was
cared for during the two weeks of her life. “The
care she received from GOSH was truly brilliant,”
standards that provide similar or better performance. A
Kitemark, or other third party certification,
demonstrates a doorset's compliance with PAS 24:2012.
A bespoke door assembly, which has not been
supplied as a complete doorset, should have a
multipoint locking system which meets the
requirements of PAS 3621 (or its variants PAS 8621 or
PAS 10621 depending on the method of key operation).
Single point locking systems must conform to BS 3621
(or its variants BS 8621 or BS 10621). The presence of a
Kitemark on both PAS 3621 and BS 3621 locks is the
assurance that the lock meets the standards.
Door letter plates should meet the requirements of
technical specification DHF TS 008:2012.
All easily accessible windows should meet the security
requirements of PAS 24:2012. Windows that satisfy
other standards that provide similar or better
performance are also acceptable under the Approved
Document.
Added Michael Skelding: "The Housing Standards
Review is streamlining the regulatory process to increase
the number of new homes being built. Achieving
increased security of homes was a key aim within the
review. Properties built after October this year will
feature levels of security that will provide real defence
against break-in attempts."
Approved Document Q can be downloaded from

lock standards and specifications visit the DHF website

said Graham. “We owe so much to the nurses and
doctors there.
The route will allow the charity cyclists to take in
some of Northern France’s most significant World
War battle sites, following the Normandy coastline
and cycling through the best of the French
countryside before the final stretch down the
Champs-Elysees to the finish line beneath the Eiffel
Tower. The cyclists will also have the chance to see
the final stage of the Tour de France on their last
day in Paris. i

SALES RESTRUCTURE FOR FABRICATOR
Trade fabricator Dempsey Dyer has restructured
its internal sales department – as part of its
ongoing commitment to find new ways to improve
upon its high levels of service.
Every customer has been assigned their own dedicated
account manager who will act as the main point of contact
and build a strong understanding of the customer’s business
and preferred products, providing them with a better and
more personal level service.
The company currently employs six account managers;
James Womersley, Anna Cusworth, Marie Smith, Louise
Park, Jessica Rowley and Natalie Shaw. The team
(pictured) is headed by trade administrations manager
Michelle Bossons, who has worked at Dempsey Dyer for 10
years.
Michelle comments: “The account manager’s role is to
build a close relationship with the customer, understand
their ordering habits and ultimately offer them a swift,
hassle-free service. Customer feedback so far has been
excellent and the sales team are really enjoying working
with the new strategy.”
Dempsey Dyer manufactures timber and uPVC windows,
doors and conservatories and has branded these the
Inspire range, a consumer facing brand, with marketing
materials available which installers can use to effectively
promote the benefits of the range to homeowners.
The fabricator also invests in innovative new products,
recently launching Deceuninck’s slide and swing door to
help installers capitalise on the premium entrance door
market. i
Newly formed investment vehicle DW3 Products Group has announced
that it has acquired Window Widgets and Eclectic Systems from Dan Gill.
Window Widgets was founded in 2004 and has become the first port of call for key
components for the window, door and conservatory sectors; while Eclectic Systems is
best known for developing the fast-growing, revolutionary Residence 9 window system.
The acquisitions bring the total number of companies within the DW3 Products Group
to four, with the new additions sitting alongside Solidor and Nice Door Panels. Each
business shares similar distribution channels, thereby enhancing the Groups’ geographical reach and distribution capabilities.
Gareth Mobley, CEO of DW3 Products Group, commented: “This is fantastic news
and an incredibly exciting investment for us. Under Dan’s stewardship, R9 has grown
exponentially over the last three years and Window Widgets has become hugely important as an industry favourite for fabricators from all corners of the U.K and Ireland. Dan
has an exceptional talent for developing truly game-changing products. The combination of our know-how and shared passion to re-define the industry we know so well, creates significant potential for the Group.”
With immediate effect, Dan Gill will take up the role of CEO of the DW3 Group Window Division and sit on the main DW3 Board. Dan commented: “This is an incredibly
exciting investment for us and one that has considerable scope for development. It
means that we can fast track some new product launches and blossom into a fullyfledged systems house as we build the wider group through organic growth and acquisition. I am really looking forward to joining the board of DW3 and to working alongside Gareth and the great team that’s been assembled.” i

MUDDY EXHIBITOR CLEANS
UP AT FIT SHOW 2016
The best way to demonstrate the
exceptional
performance
of
TruShield easy-clean treatment
for glazing is to throw muddy
water at it,” says Charlotte
Davies, Marketing Manager at
Edgetech UK. “It really brings
home how brilliantly TruShield,
Edgetech’s next generation glass
protection system, works.”
Visitors to FIT Show 2016 will find
TruShield right by the entrance of Hall 3.
Edgetech chose stand AT10 for new
product TruShield when show organisers
added premium space in the atrium
between the newly located Master Fitter
Challenge and the exhibition entrance.
Charlotte wants the latest products in
Edgetech’s range to have the attention
they deserve: “TruShield is a fantastic
opportunity for the window industry. It
protects glass to maintain its original
performance and saves time, effort and
money for end users by creating easy-
clean glass. It adds value to windows or
glazing
for
IGU
manufacturers,
fabricators and installers.”
Throwing muddy water at both treated
and untreated glass allows visitors to see
just how TruShield works. The chemically
bonded layer maintains the clarity of the
glass without affecting the light
transmission and this maintains the
energy efficiency of units. TruShield is
exceptionally resistant to wear, chemical
erosion, heat and UV radiation.
“Visitors to FIT Show 2016 will see the
process for coating glass is simple,” adds
Charlotte. “Edgetech has three options
for companies looking at this profitable
new
opportunity.
We
will
be
demonstrating how the hand, semi and
fully automated systems make TruShield
available to any business.”
Edgetech has three stands at FIT Show
2016. In addition to showing TruShield,
Edgetech also has the stand next to the
highly popular Master Fitter Challenge.
This is dedicated to TruFit
expanding foam edge tape
for thermally efficient window
and door installations. It will
show why one day all
windows will be fitted this
way. And in Hall 3 there’s the
rapidly growing ‘just add
glass’ product range for IGU
manufacturers
on
the
Edgetech stand. i
BFRC licence holders are reminded that suppliers of
their sealed units have a legal obligation to comply
with BS EN 1279 Glass in Buildings: Insulating Glass
Units.
This is not a new requirement. Since the 1st July
2013 it has been mandatory for sealed unit
manufacturers to meet the requirement of the
Construction Products Regulation (2013) and
subsequent CE Marking.
It is a legal requirement for unit manufacturers to
declare the performance of their products. As such
your sealed unit supplier should be able to provide
you with documentary evidence to confirm the
product has been tested appropriately. All sealed
units must meet the requirements of part 2 of BS En
1279. However, if you are purchasing gas filled
sealed units, your supplier must be able to

GLAZERITE SCOOP THE AWARDS AGAIN
Glazerite installers have beaten all-comers yet
again, scooping half of all the Regional trophies in
the annual Network VEKA awards – plus the
coveted all-UK customer satisfaction trophy once
again.
Customers of the trade fabricator took no fewer than five of
the ten Regional awards, plus the national trophy and Fitter of
the Year, as well as numbering 12 of the total 30 finalists and
gaining three new entries into the organisation’s elite 100%
Club.
Overall champion this year was last year’s Best Newcomer,
Frames Conservatories Direct of Bury St Edmunds, also winning
top Regional for the East of England. Shane Howells held the
West of England title and KJM Windows retained the South –
both for the sixth time – while Goliath Homeworld had a fifth
win for the Midlands and Cheadle Glass won a second time for
the North West, and Fitter of the Year went to Ronnie Pym and
Mark Barnfield of Frames Conservatories Direct.
Glazerite Director Jason Thompson said after the awards:
“Once again, our customers have shown that they are among
the best of the best in Network VEKA and we are proud of them
all. We have always encouraged our customer members to
commit themselves 100% to everything the organisation stands
for and to make full use of everything it offers. With such a
superb showing on the trophy table, they have proved this to
be the only way to go.”
All the trophies were presented by Network VEKA brand
ambassador Steve Davis at the organisation’s AGM and Gala
Dinner at the Holiday Inn, Stratford-upon-Avon on Saturday
(Mar 21).
Last year, Glazerite customers took six Regional trophies as
well as UK Champion, Best Newcomer and 13 of the 30 finalist
slots. In 2013 they took four Regionals and 10 of the finalists.

In her new role, Karen will co-ordinate international projects from the provision of bespoke solutions through to
developing service contracts and trading agreements to be
handled both centrally and locally by the company’s subsidiaries. She will work closely with the business development, specification and area sales teams in each territory
to maximise sales, as well as monitoring industrial requirements and trends across core industries worldwide.
Karen will draw on her many years of experience and knowledge of working with glass systems, processing methods and

ONS STATS DON’T STACK UP FOR THE
WINDOW INDUSTRY
The statistics don’t appear to stack up for the
window industry in the newly published report
from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) on the
size and performance of the UK low carbon
economy, according to Andy Jones, Managing
Director at Edgetech UK.
“The report states that in 2013 (the latest dates included in
the report) total turnover for the manufacture and supply of
energy efficient windows and doors is £2.8 billion, which we
believe to be about right,” says Andy.
“It’s the supporting figures that don’t stack up. The ONS
report states that there are only 180 companies engaged in
direct activities for the manufacture and supply of energy
efficient windows and doors with 17,500 people employed in
the sector. We believe that considerably more companies are
involved and that a much higher number of people are
employed.
“With the report putting £20 million for investment, this figure
too looks unrealistically low. Because we cannot reconcile
these figures with what we know, we are writing to the ONS to
get further clarification of the numbers included in the report.”
The section on energy efficient products shows windows and
doors ranks third, taking 17 percent of the total. Insulation is in
the top slot with 34 percent of market share. Other products
included are energy efficient lighting, heat recovery and
ventilation, energy controls and control systems, and
sustainable architecture and buildings.
“But,” adds Andy, “one thing that’s very clear is 4 out of 6
product categories included in the ONS report are eligible for
reduced VAT at 5 percent. Lighting and energy efficient
windows and doors are the only products that have 20 percent
VAT added to them. If the Government is really serious about
creating a low carbon economy it needs to support all UK
based companies manufacturing and supplying energy
efficient products.
“In 2008 Edgetech was the first company in the industry to
bring the argument to Government in a petition. It was debated
in parliament and included in Hansard, the record of every
debate for the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The
petition declared that substantial energy savings, and
consequential environmental benefits, could be achieved with
the use of energy efficienct products and that the Government
should therefore reduce VAT on such products.
“When the General Election is over, we will be
lobbying our local MP again to look again at supporting
reduced rate VAT. i
The VEKA UK Group has named the Encephalitis Society as its nominated charity for 2015, announcing a
series of events that will take place over the course of
the year to raise funds for the support and research
organisation.
Gabriela Hammond, Head of Human Resources at The VEKA
UK Group comments: “This is a cause that's close to our hearts
and, as such, The VEKA UK Group is dedicating a full year's
support to the society as opposed to the normal six-months.
“Fundraising got off to a flying start in January, with many
staff members staying 'dry' for the month in return for sponsorship money! March's Network VEKA AGM saw members
donate over £700 to use the '70s-themed props, supplied for
the evening's entertainment – an amazingly generous contribution to make in just one day.
“Susan Lunney, the Network VEKA Office Manager and Karen Galawan, PA to our Sales and Marketing Director teamed up
to help us make the most of Easter's fundraising opportunities. They baked and decorated an amazing batch of cupcakes that
sold out in a flash at our Burnley HQ.
“For the more active among us, there are charity runs, sponsored bike rides and the annual VEKA golf day to look forward
to. And, for those who enjoy their sport more from the comfort of an armchair, the Euro football sweepstake always proves a
popular money-spinner!” To find out more or how to sponsor us go to our website www.vekauk.com i

Page 1
The Certass Column
Certass is the UK’s leading Competent Person Scheme
TRR – is the easiest way to comply with Part L of the Building Regulations
Thermal Ratings
Reviewed –
What Can Certass
TRR Do for You?
We thought we'd take an opportunity to remind readers that there are a number of elements
to Certass - particularly the Thermal Rating Register (TRR)
T
RR provides a simple system to demonstrate the
energy efficiency of varying window and door designs. It uses a simple
colour coded A-G rating, similar
to that seen on white goods. The
higher the rating, the better the
overall thermal efficiency and the
greater the savings consumers
can expect. TRR provides details
of PVC-U, timber and metal windows. The Building Regulations
require replacement windows to
be a minimum of a ‘C’ rating. The
rating of windows not only takes
into account the amount of heat
the window loses directly but also
the amount of air that can escape
through the frame and the positive benefit of heat energy gained
from solar energy. Much of the
work of TRR is applied to fabricators – with installers simply purchasing finished goods that have
already been rated. However, if
an installer buys frames from one
company and glass from another,
they have to ensure that the combination is rated. TRR has a system
that
allows
installers
operating in this way to comply
16 | Certass Column | The Installer
with their legal requirements.
Thus, belonging to TRR can give
your business a competitive edge
as it provides a cost effective system to register your window designs. Our rating processes are
streamlined to ensure a smooth
registration process. Windows
registered with Certass TRR will
receive an A-C rating and you
will be provided with certificates
of compliance. In addition your
services will be listed on the TRR
website as conforming to Building
Regulations where consumers are
able to search local installers by
window rating and framing material.
TRR Accredited Installer
Becoming a TRR Accredited Installer not only allows you to
demonstrate Building Regulation
compliance but also provides
marketing advantage. Consumers
are becoming more aware of energy savings and are familiar
with the A-G rating already in
place on white goods. Using a
Window Energy Rating gives you
a marketing edge and can help

ritish manufacturer of

blinds, Origin, designs
and manufactures all
of its products from start to finish.
We spoke with Neil Ginger
(pictured top right) CEO at Origin, to discuss the benefits of
choosing aluminium and how installers can identify good from
bad aluminium profile.
Strength and weight
Aluminium is extremely strong yet
weighs 67 per cent less than
steel. The strength of aluminium
allows bi-fold doors to be manufactured with incomparably narrow frames to let in maximum
amounts of light. It’s versatile and
strong enough to easily make
complex layouts, such as moving
corner posts and bay setups,
without being too heavy. The
strength also makes aluminium
bi-folds very secure, especially
when combined with multi-point
locking systems and high security Energy efficiency
cylinders.
The main contributor to the low

using 24mm units.
Origin’s Supply Chain
Origin runs a first class supply
chain, with high quality linkage
from aluminium source and creation of the bi-fold doors and
windows, to the method of reaching the consumer. The company’s
internal team designed the Origin Bi-fold Door from scratch, ensuring even the smallest detail
was carefully considered to guarantee a precision engineered
system. In 2014, Origin extended its operations to offer the
Origin Window, a premium

quality aluminium flush casement
window.
Quality from the Start
Origin retains direct control over
the design and fabrication of its
systems to ensure they’re the best
on the market. The company
doesn’t allow any external fabrication of its door or window systems. The products go out
completely finished and ready to
install. Origin is therefore able to
guarantee faultless performance
for at least 20 years.
The manufacture of a high
quality bi-fold door or window
must start with the best aluminium profile. While there are
many different grades of aluminium, what makes Origin’s
aluminium system different is the
way the profile is made.
Extruding a profile is done by
heating the metal, a cylindrical
billet of aluminium, which gets
pushed through a die to form the
extrusion. This is then cut to either
5 metre or 6.1 metre lengths to
finish the profile. Our supplier
only uses prime billets, meaning
that they do not use billets that
have been produced through the
re-melting of scrap aluminium.
This results in a higher control of
the chemical properties in the billet and thus achieving a higher
quality finish. Each billet is certified and sourced from a number
of high end suppliers, therefore
allowing Origin full traceability
back to primary billets.
The quality of the extrusion is
also maintained by keeping the
press run rate at an optimal level.
This will make sure no lines can
be seen on the profile once powder coated. Visually, the process
is comparable to putting Play
Dough through a shape; if it’s
done too quickly or slowly, the
quality of the end result is compromised. Our suppliers also
limit the extrusion run quantity to
a maximum of 2 tonnes before
cleaning and polishing the die to
minimise the deterioration of the
die surface and ensure each die
maintains a near perfect shape
so they can continue to produce
profile within tolerance. Finally,
a consistent and smooth finish is
achieved by polishing the die
after each extrusion run to reduce the chance of corrosion
and avoid contamination on the
surface of the profile giving a
high quality finish ready for the
powder coating process.
Investment in Aluminium
We firmly believe that aluminium’s strength, durability, efficiency and style makes it by far
the best material to manufacture
doors and windows from - superior to wood or UPVC. While
these were once the material of
choice, aluminium now has an
increasing share of this lucrative
market. As a result, it’s more important than ever to choose a
system that uses the best quality
aluminium profile to achieve a
superior quality, strength and finish.
In addition to sourcing the best
quality of aluminium, we’ve
taken the bold move to introduce
a zero lead time ‘Your Lead
Time, Not Ours’ promise to our
customers. Origin has made a
significant investment in ‘buffer’
stock to ensure the sourcing of
aluminium does not affect our
continued 100% record for upholding this promise.
Identifying Quality
The proof of good quality is in
the surface finish. Good quality
aluminium should have a perfectly smooth and consistent finish, while poor quality may have
pitting from when the door has
been heated during powder
coating. i

ynseal’s new WarmCore Folding Sliding Door System is promised as the ideal balance
between the linear rigidity and strength offered by aluminium profiles and with the exceptional thermal performance offered by PVC-U.
Warcore is a ‘warm aluminium’ system in which the polyamide core usually used as a
thermal break in aluminium profiles is replaced by a PVC-U section. The result is unrivalled
thermal performance amongst such products with U-values as low as 1.4 W/m2k using
standard 28mm double glazed units or 1.0
W/m2k when triple glazed units are used.
Quickslide’s Adrian Barraclough explains:
“Quickslide production and distribution are
based upon the principles of the very best
techniques and standards available in manufacturing, not just those of the window industry. That is why we can promise deliveries
when we say they will be delivered, 100%
and in full. We have been the market leading supplier of vertical sliding windows for
10 years now and the standards that keep
us in that spot are now applied to the WarmCore door.”
Quickslide is taking orders now through
the company’s telephone sales team on

Deceuninck’s Slide & Swing New Wave Door is now available in a wide range of
colours from stock. Rob McGlennon, Deceuninck's Sales Director comments: “Deceuninck’s Slide & Swing New Wave Door is a big leap forward for the industry. It’s
hard to grasp how much of an advance it is on a bi-fold until you see homeowners and installers respond to it. They can’t leave it alone. It is simply beautiful, a door with real wow appeal.
“We aim to give Deceuninck fabricators and installers innovative, aspirational products that open
doors, and help them stand out and sell. That’s
why we’ve introduced the Deceuninck Slide &
Swing New Wave Door in a wide range of
colours from stock, so our fabricators, and their
installer customers, can offer products that
homeowners love without having to wait. It’s
time to say bye-bye to bi-folds!”
The Slide & Swing New Wave Door is a next
generation multi-pane patio door that operates
in a uniquely different way. The secret is in the
name. Each frame locates and slides independently so the door can be opened at any point.
Then, one at a time the frames swing to stack
nefolds – it looks fantastic. i

Automatic Doors
for the People
W
hen Blenheim Palace undertook its largest
development for 200 years, it wanted
glass doors that would enable visitors to
flow into its visitor centre while allowing
the stunning vista of the Estate to be seen.
The stylish pair of automatic sliding
doors powered by GEZE UK’s Slimdrive SL operators do
exactly that – and two years on, they have allowed more
than 800,000 visitors to pass through the glass-ceilinged
visitor centre designed to reflect the adjacent Orangery.
The redevelopment project, led by the Blenheim Estate
Construction team, was undertaken in direct response to a
dramatic increase of visitors, so the Slimdrive SL automatic
sliding door system was chosen because of its suitability
for busy entrances.
With an operator height of just 7cm, the Slimdrive SL is
extremely compact making it almost invisible in elevation.
Designed to be virtually silent in operation, it is ideal for
glass doors such as those at Blenheim Palace visitor centre.
GEZE’s patch fittings and floor springs were also fitted to
the manual glass doors in the
visitor centre. Both the patch fittings and floor springs are
finished in elegant ground stainless steel. i
Perfect for the UK climate, Imago Lift & Slide is the definitive timber wide-span
door for design led homes. The super-slim wooden frame makes it an exciting
choice for extensions, sunrooms and orangeries where style and performance is
paramount.
Imago frames the view with a sightline down to just 2cm. Unlike most wooden doors, Imago has a
sash slimmer than even some aluminium lift and slide doors. The hardware disappears into the frame
and the silky smooth slide mechanism is invisible. The Imago Lift & Slide Door has been selected as
one of the best industrial designs by the ADI Index 2014, alongside an impressive line-up of new offerings from luxury brands renowned for beauty
and performance including Ferrari, Maserati
and Ducati.
The result is a huge glazed window door that
offers an uninterrupted view. The combination
of elegant style and industry leading thermal
and weather performance has redefined what
is possible from a timber door. Our British
weather means large doors stay firmly
shut for most of the year. Open or closed,
Imago’s slim design means there aren’t multiple
frames to break up the view, creating a light
filled space. i

New Orangery Roof
S
olid tiled conservatory
roof designer Supalite
has annoinced the
launch of its new Orangery roof to the trade
market. The new Orangery comes with all the outstanding features the industry has
come to expect from Supalite –
aesthetic appeal, superb technical capabilities, excellent thermal
efficiency and of course with ease
of installation for roof installers as
a key part of the design thinking.
Operations Director for Supalite Steve Hacking explains:
“To launch the Orangery roof is
a natural progression for us
building on the incredible success of our Supalite tiled roof
range”.
“It is the next product in our
portfolio – but by no means the
last. We believe that our new
Orangery roof is perfect for
today’s market and we know our
installers will really take to it”.
It is of course ideal for newbuild applications but it is
equally suitable for the replacement roof market and is designed
to
enable
the
replacement of the flat roofs
which are installed on so many
existing orangeries”.
“Being able to replace a flat
roof with a pitched roof will take
away so many potential problems and of course it then brings
with it the other advantages of
the vaulted ceiling internally and
the use of tapco slates externallyto give it an outstanding appearance inside and out”.
Easy Installation
“We have brought some great
new technical features to the
market with this product too in-
cluding a brand new ring beam
to make it robust and to aid with
the ease of installation - which is
always one of our key drivers
and a major consideration in the
design of anything we do”.
“It is also designed to be a
very cost effective solution which
coupled to its many outstanding
features will make it very attractive to the market”.
“The new roof is available right
now to our trade customers and
as with all our roofs we are delighted to offer the ‘assisted fit’
support service for first time installations”. i

A dispute can be your
worst nightmare and
cost you thousands
of pounds!
Hands up those of you that
have had a nasty experience
suing someone or being sued?
Maybe you have had a customer that didn't want to pay. A supplier
that provided you with faulty goods and would not replace these.
A sub-contractor who has built a conservatory base wrong, or Trading
Standards have told you that your Contract and its Terms and Conditions
are illegal.
Any of the foregoing problems and indeed many other forms of dispute
can not only demoralise you, but also cost you a fortune.
Disputes come in all shapes and sizes and unless a dispute is controlled and
the correct tactics employed, then you could be £10,000.00 out of pocket
in no time at all. If you have had any form of dispute in the past, then you
will be fully aware of the cost - it is usually very high.

Even what appears to be a simple dispute at the outset can soon run out of
control when Solicitors become involved. Consider this:- a typical Solicitor
will be charging £250 - £350.00 per hour. An Expert Witness will be
charging £100 - £150.00 per hour and a Barristers advice (which most
Solicitors will suggest that you need, either before issuing a Summons or
indeed defending one) will cost you £1,500 - £2,000.00.
The costs just increase steadily as any hearing approaches.
It is not unusual to spend £20 - £30,000.00 on a dispute with no guarantee
of any reasonable result.
It is therefore vitally important that any dispute you may have is dealt with
on a professional, pro-active basis with one goal in mind, that is to resolve
the dispute as quickly and as cheaply as possible.
You may have heard it said in the past that the only winners in a dispute
are the Solicitors. This is not a throw-away comment but an actual fact.
For in any dispute, your Solicitor, your Expert and your Barrister will receive
their fees whether you are successful or not. So be very careful.
We have been assisting Companies in the Window Industry for over

Cornish Cream
Swish Authorised Fabricator and Installer Atlantic Windows has been working with Swish Window and Door
Systems for seven years. Director Brenda Edwards explains:
“Homeowners like the Swish brand. They associate it with the highest standards and often comment on the quality of the products. The
slim sculptured appearance of Swish PVC-u profile makes it easier
to design windows that complement Cornish properties. The heritage colours are really popular, especially cream, Chartwell Green
and Agate Grey from Swish’s Impressions range.
“We have a great relationship with Swish. We like that we can
pick up the phone whenever we need some advice and Hayley King, Business Development Manager for Swish Window and
Door Systems, visits us regularly, something we rarely get from other suppliers.
“Recently we’ve redesigned our product brochures and marketing materials, and we’ve updated our uniforms. Alongside
Atlantic Windows’ logo there’s the official Swish logo to show we’re an Authorised Fabricator and Installer. After 40 years
Atlantic Windows is a trusted name in Cornwall. Adding the Swish brand gives customers even more confidence.”

these radios will live on site safely. The DMR106 job site radio weighs
just 4.2kg and has a rugged, hinged top carry handle.
They can be powered by any of the Makita Li-ion LXT batteries

radio for a powerful 25watt maximum output.
Equipped with 2-star Bluetooth (10m range) connectivity a mobile
device can be wirelessly connected to play your choice of music. A
retractable aerial gives access to AM and FM radio and the rotary
digital tuner and pre-set buttons are clear on the front fascia of the
radio. An auxiliary IN jack is provided as is a USB port which
enables a mobile device to be charged from either the operating
batteries or through mains power.
The new Makita DMR106 radio is available in either traditional
Makita blue or the DMR106B version in black. i makitauk.com uk

Door-Stop offers a 10 year guarantee on every component, covering

Apeer doors has launched a new collection of contemporary Apeer doors
along with an updated Diamond
range.
Supported by brand new brochures, two
completely revamped websites and full updates
to its Doorbuilder software system, the company’s multi-platform launch comes just in time for
the busy Spring home improvements rush.
Marketing manager Linda Tomb comments:
“Getting the two new brochures ready – for
Apeer/Modo and Diamond doors – has been
no mean feat but we think our customers will
find them both great selling aids.
“The Apeer brochure will include our stunning new Apeer Contemporary collection with
29 new styles. It will also incorporate our top of
the range ‘designer’ collection – Modo.
The new Diamond brochure will feature 42
doors (single and double rebate) including two
brand new styles and five reworked designs –
with double rebate Double Diamond being fully manufactured in-house to offer even greater flexibility on size requirements.
Apeer’s Doorbuilder software system has also been given another massive update to incorporate all the new styles and collections
featured in the new brochures. i apeer.co.uk
Swisspacer’s video ‘A homeowner’s story’ follows a homeowner as she explains in her own words why
she chose windows with Swisspacer inside.
Caroline Norton lives near Birmingham airport and wanted
energy efficient windows that helped cut noise from the airport. Mrs Norton also wanted to keep the original Georgianstyle windows, and her installer, Belleview Windows, recommended Swisspacer.
The video is available for installers to show on sales pitches,
to explain the benefits of to end users.
Vic De Costa, UK & Ireland Marketing & Sales Manager says:
“We have lots of fantastic testimonials from fabricators and
installers, but hearing what homeowner’s think brings it all
home. It’s great to get such positive feedback from homeowners and we’re sure this video will be a useful sales tool for our
installer customers.” i swisspacer.co.uk

In house paint spraying facility
As well as supplying popular paler shades, such as Chartwell
Green, Duck Egg Blue and Dove Grey, the in-house service
can cater for a full range of bespoke RAL colours, says
Phoenix Doors’ Sales Director, Haydon Statham.
Customers will also benefit from reduced lead times and improvements
in quality and competitive cost for both standard and non-standard
colours.
Haydon comments: “Our in-house painting service means there will be
a beneficial impact on costs and lead times as we are not relying on a
third party; thereby controlling our own destiny in this area. We have
recruited a key skilled member of staff with 20 years’ paint spraying experience and the door finishes are outstanding – we are all very impressed.
“In following the general market trend for colour, we believe this is a
sound investment backed by the MASCO Group and ensures we can continue to offer market-leading, high-performance door products designed
for the 21st century.” i phoenixdoorpanels.co.uk
Senior Architectural Systems new patent-pending
PURe window range benefits from an enhanced
thermal barrier manufactured from expanded
polyurethane foam (PUR).
Traditionally used in cladding and insulation products, the use
of PUR as a thermal barrier in windows gives the PURe system
the potential to achieve U-values as low as 0.71w/m2k when
calculated as a commercial CEN standard window.
The enhanced thermal performance of the PURe range can
significantly improve a project’s carbon footprint as it exceeds
the requirements of Part L of the Building Regulations and provides a significant reduction from the typical U-values of 1.751.9w/m2k achieved by Senior’s standard SPW600 aluminium window system. Despite the dramatic difference in
U-values, the PURe system is competitively priced allowing
main contractors to reduce the CO2 calculations without
increasing costs. It has also been designed to meet the PassivHaus standard cycle.
The construction process of the PURe system can also contribute to reducing the calculations of embodied carbon which
looks at the energy used in the manufacture, transportation,
assembly and deconstruction of construction materials. Not
only is the PURe system manufactured using existing tools
from aluminium, which offers ‘cradle to cradle’ recycling, but
the PUR thermal barrier can be re-used as fillers for other
products with no requirement for landfill. i

A £100,000 investment by Synseal has purchased a new
NWA.300.7000 profile lamination machine from WPR Srl, who
are based near Venice in Northern Italy.
Synseal’s new profile lamination machine is the third new foiling line installed by Adhesive Solutions, in addition to an automatic foil slitting machine from WPR and technical upgrades for the
three original Synseal foiling lines to bring them fully up to date
and in line with WPR specifications.
“We are delighted with the practical and specialist support provided by Adhesive Solutions,” says Synseal’s Production Director
Robin Byron. “This additional profile lamination line will help us to respond efficiently to satisfy customer
requirements and meet increased sales demand for foiled products, as our Synseal group continues to grow.”
The new WPR machine is fitted with all the latest profile lamination technology including a precision coating
head, automatic priming system for using Zero VOC primers and hot melt PUR application equipment. i

No Steal from Steel
Difficult to force because of the inherent strength of their frames,
steel windows are not liked by burglars. One of the best deterrents
to a prospective thief is the traditional ‘cottage’ style steel window,
divided into small frames, with interlocked steel glazing bars. Steel
Window Association members also offer W40 steel windows that
comply with Secured by Design requirements.
The strength and security of steel windows and doors is increased through the
use of appropriate hardware. When manufacturing new windows, Steel Window
Association members provide locking devices, locking handles, concealed bolts
and mortice deadlocks. Locking handles are also supplied for existing installations
to provide the highest levels of security. To achieve the greatest protection against
forced entry, hardware is attached using steel screws threaded into the steel frame.
A concealed multi-point cremone bolt locking system, operated through the
frame by a geared handle, offers enhanced resistance to intrusion on new windows in the W40 range. When specified, glazed steel framed doors can be fitted with security mortice deadlocks.
Glass is not easily removed from today’s steel windows. Modern adhesive sealants and metal beads firmly secure the panes and, in vulnerable areas, small pane ‘T’ glazing bars and laminated glass can be employed, making breaking and entering difficult. Even if the pane
is broken, locked handles and stays will maintain security.
Effective air movement need not be compromised by good security. A two point locking handle will allow the option of leaving the window cracked open or trickle ventilation can be provided through the head of the window. i steel-window-association.co.uk
Saint-Gobain Glass has launched six new apps designed to
improve the purchase and specification experience of its customers. Available on both Android and iPhone, users can pick
up Glass Compass, Glass Vision, Glass Design, Glass dBstation,
Glass Façade and GlassPro in the app store now.
Glass Compass determines the best performing glass for your windows
based on the geographical location of your home and its orientation. With
a “Savings & Economies” module that helps you choose the best glazing to
suit your requirements there is also an Energy Calculator that illustrates
indicative savings you could achieve.
Glass Vision virtual app aids you in choosing the right interior glass for
your home and office through augmented reality. Covering products from
Saint-Gobain Glass’ premium range - SGG DECORGLASS (patterned glass),
SGG MASTERGLASS (contemporary glass), SGG PLANILAQUE
EVOLUTION (lacquered glass), SGG SATINOVO (acid-etched glass) – the
application features a 360 degree holistic view of the glass with a full screen
simulation mode. As well as offering you the aesthetics of the glass in terms
of pattern and colour, it also offers a look at the privacy it provides by
looking at the transparency and translucency of the glass.
Glass Design is a visual showcase of interior projects where Saint-Gobain
Glass products have been used. A portfolio of creative interior design, users
can browse either by building types, applications or by products. “Bringing
you a step closer to your dreams,” you can bookmark your favourite interior projects for future reference and if you’re feeling
inspired you can contact SGGUK using the form in the app.
Glass dBstation is all about acoustics. Helping users to determine the best performing glazing for your windows according to
noise pollution in your surrounding environment, this acoustic simulator recreates the sound insulation provided by various
insulating glazing compositions. Best viewed using a smartphone or tablet with a minimum screen size of 800x480 pixels,
SGGUK recommend you use the dBstation with headphones to give improved perception between glazing solutions.
Similar to Glass Design, Glass Façade is a visual showcase of aesthetic versatility. A portfolio of Saint-Gobain Glass’
worldwide commercial projects, browse by either building types, external appearance, products or by country. You can even try
the in-built Project Locator Map to find the projects in your city.
Intended as a guide to demonstrate the type of glazing products throughout the different stages of a building construction,
GlassPro is an interactive app which simulates a realistic image synthesis of different products on facades of buildings. Enabling
the user to visualise the rendering of a glazing product under various lighting conditions and several interior design settings, this
particular app is only available on iOS. i saint-gobain-glass.com
