Her energy was gone, replaced by extra weight; she was soaking the sheets with night sweats, and a near-permanent bad mood had sucked the joy from her life. “I was miserably mean,” she says. But she chalked it up to the unpleasant effects of aging, thinking she had to live with the hand she was dealt. Then Carolann turned an ear to the buzz in the waiting room of her husband’s clinic. Working as an OB/GYN at the time, Dr. Gino Tutera was developing an impressive clientele. Women were flying in from all around the country, flocking to see Dr. Tutera – but it wasn’t just his bedside manner making him a well-known name. It was an innovative treatment called bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, and it was giving women their lives back. Listening to these women rave about the effects, Carolann decided she had nothing to lose by giving BHRT a try. It was a smart move; baseline labs revealed that Carolann had the hormonal levels of a woman far beyond her age. Soon, with the help of Dr. Tutera and his revolutionary hormone replacement therapy, Carolann’s life did a dramatic turnaround. She slept better, regained her usual high energy levels, felt happier, and lost the stubborn pounds she’d packed on. Even her skin looked smoother and brighter. “People thought I’d had work done,” she says. Ever since then, Carolann has been one of the leading champions for her husband’s cause – and his SottoPelle® hormone pellet therapy has skyrocketed as increasingly more people, men and women alike, have learned of the amazing benefits it can offer. “My job is to help you improve your quality of life so you can enjoy your life,” says Dr. Tutera. An individualized dosage of natural, plant-derived hormones restores levels to perfect equilibrium; the effective pellet delivery system ensures a steady stream of hormones is available when the body needs it most. The result is a return to an optimal, youthful balance – and, for people like Carolann, a return to their former, vibrant selves. “It absolutely changed my life,” she says. “It has made such a huge impact in my life, and my relationships with others.” Now she enjoys watching others undergo the same thrilling transformation, and sharing their delight as they regain a vitality once thought to be gone forever. It’s as though SottoPelle® patients have found the proverbial Fountain of Youth – in convenient pellet form. Locations throughout Arizona. Even my 5-year-old not only had a mean swing but also managed to get the ball to sail through the air in a nice, long arc—and now she has been asking constantly since that day to go back and play again. While they may never progress to pro status like the athlete on our cover, Allison Micheletti, I was pretty happy that at least they could play. Allison came into the game of golf late though. She began her athletic career playing basketball and soccer, until an injury at age 16 forced her to change direction. Perhaps because I am so athletically challenged, I am always in awe of those who can play a sport, and play it well. Allison, who is currently starring on the reality show Big Break Atlantis, is extremely talented and works hard to be the best she can be. Susan R. My name is Roxy Banta. I live in Sun Lakes, Arizona. Thanks to Positive Changes I have lost 62 pounds of unwanted weight forever. Roxy Banta Sun Lakes, AZ My Weight Controlled My Life Being overweight was hard. A lot of things would go through my mind. I couldn’t shop where I wanted to shop for clothes. I was limited in the choices I had. I had always loved fashion and the latest styles and I couldn’t wear those things. My health was suffering. My blood pressure and cholesterol were getting higher and it was concerning to me. I knew I had to change my life. Hypnosis? You’re Kidding! I had actually been reading Joyce Spartonos’s story--and others--in the newspaper for a few months before I finally asked Joyce (who lives nearby) how she did it. My initial reaction was, “You’re kidding!” I would never have thought of hypnosis as a way to lose weight, but there she was and I could see the proof of the program working. I figured there had to be something to it. The biggest thing that impressed me about her story was that she was confident and that it was easy for her to maintain her weight loss. I knew that I could lose weight too but I wanted to be able to maintain my weight loss. It wasn’t that I didn’t know what to do to lose weight. I knew what I should be eating and shouldn’t be eating. I just lacked the willpower to do it. I thought hypnosis might be a way of gaining that control and willpower in my life. I knew what I had to do next so I called Positive Changes! Free Evaluation When I first came into the center I was impressed by how easy-going the staff was. There was no pressure. All my questions were answered and my evaluator explained hypnosis and how it works. It all made sense to me and it was logical. I felt like the program was finally what I was looking for. I was also impressed that Positive Changes uses the information that’s already out there. There are no weird diets or suggestions that they ask you to go on. I started noticing changes early on and became more and more convinced that this program would work for me. I Knew It Was Working I started noticing that I was skipping the bakery section completely. I wasn’t interested in those foods. There was no inner struggle. It was just food that I no longer needed and it was easy to just walk past it. It’s calming to me to have that control over food and to let go of the worry of ever gaining my weight back. I don’t even sample the food that they have at Costco anymore. My reaction to those foods has completely changed. I don’t miss those foods at all. My husband and I used to go out for ice cream. That’s not something we do anymore either and we don’t miss it. Before It Feels Natural, It’s Easy! With Positive Changes, for the first time, I’m in control. It feels natural. It’s easy. In the beginning it was just amazing to me, especially during the first month or so on the program. My husband was even losing weight. That’s because I realized how often I was going to the refrigerator and getting snacks for the both of us. He started losing weight because I wasn’t constantly bringing food to him when I was eating. Hypnosis put me in control of that behavior. I didn’t feel the need to snack constantly all the time. I felt positive about what I was doing. I never felt the diet deprivation. I was giving my body quality fuel and I finally was getting that message. I was craving the good foods instead of the unhealthy foods. I eat more fresh and alive foods than I ever have and I no longer end up throwing out my produce because it sat too long without getting eaten. Now I know I can do this and I’m confident I will never gain my weight back! I would, and have, recommended Positive Changes Hypnosis to anyone who wants to lose weight and change their lives. I have several friends who have already begun at Positive Changes and are experiencing their own successes. When people see me and notice the changes I’ve made they want to know what I’ve done to achieve my goals, and then they also see Joyce who has maintained her weight loss for 3 years! I was given the tools to glide through any situation. It’s been easy. Success just happens. I’m living proof that this program works. ABOUT YOUR DIVORCE LEGAL CUSTODY PHYSICAL CUSTODY These two concepts are often used interchangeably by divorcing parents when, in fact, they refer to very different concepts. Legal custody is the responsibility for decision making for major issues in a child’s life. These include education, religion and health care. Many agreements between parents will define legal custody decisions to include extra-curricular activity participation as well. Legal custody is granted to one parent as “sole” or to both parents as “joint”. When parents have joint legal custody, neither is in a superior position as it relates to decision making and the parents must work together to reach consensus on the best course of action for their child. If a parent is granted sole legal custody, he or she “calls the ball” so to speak, and makes the decision for the child regardless of the other parent’s consent. Having sole legal custody does not alleviate that parent of the responsibility to communicate with the other and obtain his or her input before making an important decision. A pervading Urban Legend is that if a parent has sole legal custody that means he or she can move out of Arizona with the child. NOT SO! Physical custody is the concept of where a child lives, and when. Arizona places a greater emphasis on equal time spent with each parent than do many other states. Physical custody is not categorized by the term “sole”, and rarely is it referred to as “joint”. When parents share an equal parenting time arrangement with the children it is typically done on a 5-2-2-5 schedule. Under this plan, one parent has the children every Monday and Tuesday, the other has every Wednesday and Thursday, and the weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) are alternated. For example, if you are the Monday, Tuesday parent, and it was just your weekend, you will have had the children for 5 consecutive days (Friday through Tuesday). If you’re male and you’ve lost your hair, a preliminary study shows that you might have a higher risk of prostate cancer. “Bald men should be aware that they may benefit from being screened earlier and perhaps, if necessary, from being biopsied sooner,” explains study author Dr. Neil Fleshner, a professor of surgical urology at the University of Toronto. The link may be in male hormones called androgens. However, some doctors do not agree that there may be any connection at all. Here’s a very scary stat: The worldwide incidence of cancer is expected to increase 75% by 2030. In the poorest nations, it is projected to increase more than 90%. In reality, most people are acknowledging you or noticing your really cool shoes. To tackle this fear it’s important to be in the right mindset when you step foot into the gym. I can always add more.” Rachell Hall procedures performed at Rachell Hall’s Classic Beauty are permanent eyebrows, permanent eyeliner and full lip color. Known as a Master in custom color blending and makeup artistry, Rachell’s ability to create perfectly placed and subtly colored eyebrows and amazingly natural looking eyeliner is why her international clientele come from far and wide to visit her Scottsdale location. As a twenty two year expert in the field of permanent make up Rachell Hall now explains the reality, the myths and the magic of permanent make up. “The question that I get most often, and always first is…does it hurt? People assume that the eyeliner would be the most sensitive area but actually it is the least sensitive. It is the thinnest skin on the body so with just 10 minutes of a topical numbing cream to prepare the lashline most of my clients tell me that it just sort of tickles as I massage the color into the skin at the very base of each eyelash. Because I have been doing this for so many years it really only takes about 15 minutes for upper eyeliner once the skin is properly prepared,” explains Hall who has performed thousands of procedures in both plastic surgery offices and her own private studios. Permanent makeup will enhance your looks and simplify your daily routine at any age. Young women in their 20’s and 30’s absolutely rave about the upper eyelash enhancement. “Rather than looking like permanent eyeliner I can create the illusion of a sexy, smoky, rich and full lash line. This procedure along with the latest lash enhancement products like LiLash or Latisse is the finest in beauty technology,” Hall says with enthusiasm, and an obvious love of her occupation. “One of my favorite procedures is permanent eyebrows for young women who have over-tweezed and for all my clients in their 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and beyond. Eyebrows frame the eyes to create a youthful look. My entire career has been based on “classic beauty”–nothing trendy. I can always add more–my belief is that permanent make up should be for your subtle everyday go anywhere look. For evening and special events traditional cosmetics are still wonderful to supplement the beautiful permanent makeup. Imagine waking up looking beautiful, and still looking great at 8 p.m., without having to apply cosmetics several times during the day. Imagine eyeliner and eyebrows that won’t smear or run and imagine lip color that won’t bleed or disappear. And how about jumping out of the pool and still looking marvelous. It’s all possible with permanent make up. Make your life beautiful. Strength Gains: Core, upper body, legs… your entire body will get stronger from the intense drills on the ropes. Creates Intramuscular Coordination: Since multiple muscle groups are fired up simultaneously, engagement of the primary movers and synergistic muscles will together burn massive calories. Mental Toughness: Rope training is not easy! Prepare to challenge yourself and empower your way of thinking when your mind doubts your body’s strength. Improved Grip Strength: Dynamic wrist posture and position adds strength to the wrists and upper extremities. A favorite of MMA athletes, power ropes have gone mainstream. “With the recent popularity of functional training formats such as CrossFit, kettlebells and TRX, it’s no wonder why everyday people are searching beyond traditional fitness training to sweat,” says Noel Washington, master personal trainer at the Valley of the Sun JCC. Whether you’re a guy looking to impress the ladies with your rippling abs or a woman hoping to draw the envy of your friends with your lean legs and a fine-tuned behind, we all want to look our best when lounging poolside this summer. To get the results you want, follow these eight simple steps. Clean your entire system. You’re only as healthy on the outside as you are on the inside. You must take care of your internal health by eating a clean diet, reducing toxins, reducing stress, and getting enough sleep. So while you also need to exercise, try to talking to a professional about how to “get clean” when you want to lose weight. 26 Scottsdale Health SH_10_27Core_0712.indd 26 07/12 6/25/12 2:31:55 PM Avoid putting garbage in your mouth. This step goes hand-in-hand with step 1. If you want a phenomenal physique, you can’t eat poorly. Doing so slows down how well the body works and hurts your body’s ability to respond to anything else (e.g., exercise). As a quick rule of thumb, avoid Don't bother articulating a goal if you are not ready to commit to it. Set goals. To achieve success, you have to set “smart” goals—those that are simple, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-based. Saying you want to “lose weight this summer” is not a “smart” goal. Instead, try the following: “I will go to the gym three days a week for one hour a day for one month.“ Create motivation: We all need an extra boost at times. To get yourself motivated, take part in some kind of fitness challenge, enter a contest, or commit to a consequence or reward if you don’t hit/do hit your goal. Challenge a friend to see who can lose 10 lbs. the fastest, or ask your friends if they want to plan a mini weekend getaway as soon as you attain your goal. Thoughts on Retirement Charles Schwab recently released its latest Retirement Pulse Survey, which was conducted in May of this year using Random Digit Dialing of listed and unlisted numbers. This is what they found. Do you agree? 35% of Americans consider protecting retirement assets more important than growing assets. 8% consider growing retirement assets more important than protecting them. 29% of Americans ages 18-34 plan to pull money out of the stock market in the next six months and move assets into more stable environments, such as money markets and savings accounts. One in four Americans (26%) plan to seek professional advice on managing their retirement accounts in the next six months, given the recent economic environment and uncertainty about the future. Cookbook Corner Grow Cook Eat: A Food Lover’s Guide to Vegetable Gardening By Willi Galloway, Sasquatch Books; $29.95 I don’t know the first thing about gardening. Heck, I’ve killed rosemary and it’s supposed to be foolproof. But I can’t ignore the appeal of pesticide-free produce—herbs, leafy greens, tomatoes, peppers, pea shoots, squash—sprouting out of my very own yard. The cook in me craves it; the environmentalist in me demands it. And thanks to Grow Cook Eat, I finally have the cojones to practice what I preach. Author Willi Galloway takes the guesswork out of homegrown food, guiding you step by step through planning, planting, harvesting and storing. The best part, though, is the eating. The book dishes up 50 veggie-centric recipes that beautifully showcase the fruits of your labors: fennel, potato & apple gratin, tangy grilled radicchio, herbed edamame salad, grilled fava beans, butternut squash tacos, steak sandwiches with gorgonzola chive sauce—all simple recipes that let the natural flavors shine through. I started my green thumb odyssey with mint (so far, so good) and proudly sucked back the lemon verbena-mint tisane knowing I had a special hand in the ingredients. For many, this can be a traumatizing event that leads to a decline in self-esteem and personal confidence. Despite some prescriptions on the market like Rogaine and Propecia, hair loss continues to be a problem. This may change due to the developments of company right here in the Valley. In 2002, a Scottsdale based company began to offer a hair loss treatment that, at the time, was only available in Europe and Australia. William Gaunitz, the founder of Evolution Hair Centers, was utilizing a cutting-edge new therapy for hair loss using cold laser treatment to re-stimulate dormant hair follicles. William went on to advance the treatment with new pharmaceuticals, nutritional therapy, and organic hair care products. By 2005, Evolution Hair Centers had been able to produce hair regrowth on balding individuals that was astounding to hair loss physicians. Evolution Hair Centers went on to refine the process further and zero in on key health factors that can increase premature hair loss. William discovered that by analyzing your body’s pH levels and correcting the pH balance clients were much more capable of regrowing hair. This new philosophy of combining health and hair regeneration has led to steady stream of happy clients and noticeably less thinning hair in Scottsdale area. Although their treatment process is still not mainstream, you will most likely see an Evolution Hair Centers coming near you. Evolution’s founder says “that within the next 10 years, you will mostly see an Evolution Hair Centers in every major city in the U.S.” William’s studies in Trichology and his own personal hair loss experience have allowed him to pioneer new treatments formerly never used to treat hair loss. This treatment has been shown effective for both men and women. If you are interested in regrowing your hair, you must first see one their specialists to determine if the treatment is right for you. Her father, Joe Micheletti, a former pro-hockey player, showed Micheletti and her brother early on what it took to become a professional athlete. She always assumed she would become a pro athlete, but she never imagined it would be with golf. In fact, she didn’t take up the game until she was 17-years-old. Today, at just 24, she is already on the professional circuit. Internet, cell phones, Pearl Jam and plaid, piercings, tattoos, hip hop, and the fitness wave set the tone for this decade, socially and commercially. Fashion trends change quickly—everything is allowed. The introduction of supermodels permeates women’s idea of beauty. Brown undergoes a revival, but both dark and bright lip colors are in demand. 2000—The New Millennium “Cocooning” is the buzzword for the transition into this new millennium. The term expresses a longing to return to intrinsic value and friends and family. The shape of the mouth is natural. Soft and warm shades are prominent. Pastels and shimmering shades of beige, pink and apricot (so-called non-colors) reflect women’s desires to embrace their natural beauty. It’s about a return to our basic needs, and in a declining economic climate, a new appreciation for the bare essentials. But I digress). She worked at a place that was, in those less politically correct times, known as an oldfolks home. Today, we’d call it a “senior residence,” or a “convalescent hospital,” I suppose, although most of the convalescing tend to not leave. In any event, she was among the most poorly-paid employees, one of whose principal job was cleaning up the folks who weren’t exactly “continent.” One night, she was walking down the corridor, and was checking on patients. As was the protocol, she was about to enter a woman’s room, and knocked once before turning the door handle and entering. As she entered the room, one of the older male patients jumped out of the lady’s bed and wrapped himself in a robe. Bonnie’s jaw apparently dropped, because, as he passed her on his way to his own room, he said, “Y’know how it is, Honey. When you gotta do it, you gotta do it.” We might all add, “Amen,” but that’s not the point. Lots of people seem to have a preconception that Senior Edition aging eliminates sex drive. Sroujieh, DDS If you can’t chew your food properly, it will lead to poor digestion which can lead to improper nutrition and health. If you are one of the thirty-two million people estimated to wear full or partial dentures in the U.S., denture adhesive is a fact of life. Isn’t it true that what you need is a denture adhesive that allows your dentures to sit as firmly on the jaw as if you had your own teeth again; giving you a completely natural feeling when you talk, laugh, eat and drink? Most denture adhesives work by suction. For many denture wearers however, this is not enough and slippage is a real problem because it can interfere with your ability to bite and chew and can even affect your speech, as well as allow food particles to get trapped underneath your dentures. In addition, typical denture adhesives have a taste that interferes with the flavor of foods. Plus, denture adhesives can dissolve and particles wind up being swallowed. According to a 2000 study, 37% of denture wearers have to reapply adhesive during the day. As you can imagine, these factors combined pose a quality of life issue. An implant supported denture is a type of denture that is supported by and attached to implants. An implant supported denture is attached to implants, while a regular denture rests on the gums, is not supported by implants and tends to fit less firmly in the mouth. An implant supported denture is used when a person doesn’t have any teeth in the jaw, but has enough bone in the jaw to support implants. An implant supported denture has special male attachments that snap onto female attachments on the implants. Implant supported dentures usually are made for the lower jaw because regular dentures tend to be less stable there. Usually, a regular denture made to fit an upper jaw is quite stable on its own and doesn’t need the extra support offered by implants. However, you can receive an implant supported denture in either the upper or lower jaw. Implant retained dentures have special significance for people who cannot wear lower dentures. As an edentulous (toothless) person ages and the bone continues to resorb away, lower ridges frequently disappear entirely. Thus, there is no vertical bone underlying the gums to stabilize a lower denture. These people frequently cannot wear a lower denture at all. The addition of two implants in the front of the lower jaw can make it possible to retain a lower denture which would otherwise be impossible for the patient to tolerate. The image below shows a pair of Locator attachments on implants and the denture that fits over them is shown in the image on the right. What Can You Expect From Your Implant Supported Denture? Your implant supported denture will be more stable than a regular denture. You will find it easier to speak and you won’t have to worry about the denture becoming loose or falling out of your mouth. If you have an implant supported denture in your upper jaw, it will feel more natural than a regular denture because the denture will no longer cover the roof of your mouth. You generally will be able to eat food you could not eat before, and that is how you get the right nutrition/minerals your body needs because you will be able to chew your food better. You will experience overall better health through implant supported dentures. 6/23/12 5:05:22 PM SH_CoverAds_0712.indd 64 6/23/12 5:04:25 PM
