I
n April, Kirby’s Board of Directors
elected David to be Chief Executive
Officer of the company and Joe as
Executive Chairman of the Board.
We can both confirm that the transition is going very well, proceeding in
a thoughtful and measured way. We
are working well together and excited
about the future of the company. We
thought it might be appropriate to
talk about what has made Kirby successful over the last 20 plus years in
this issue of The Carriers and also to
convey to you and to our shareholders
our resolve that we do not intend to
change this path to success.
Over the past 20 years, Kirby’s
marine transportation and diesel
engine services revenues grew from
$301 million in 1994 to projected
revenues of $2.4 billion this year, an
annualized increase of 11%. During
that same time, Kirby’s earnings
increased at an annualized rate of 19%
and its stock price rose 14%.
Kirby has led the consolidation
of the inland tank barge market
and added coastwise capabilities
in the marine industry, thereby
growing our marine transportation revenues from $255 million
in 1994 to over $1.8 billion this
year. Furthermore, Kirby has
grown the diesel engine services
business from a $45 million per
year marine repair business in
1994 to a $550 million per year
multifaceted engine business,
one that can service and build
engine packages for the marine, oilfield
services, power generation and nuclear
power industries. These results were
achieved through the successful integration of 31 marine transportation
and 17 diesel engine services acquisitions, as well as continued expansion
of their existing businesses.
We credit Kirby’s success to our
culture of discipline and our outstanding team of employees. As we think
about discipline, it really breaks down
to three key things for Kirby:
1) A relentless pursuit of flawless
execution: this includes, in order
of priority, safety, customer service and cost;
2) Capital discipline: every investment must generate sufficient
after-tax cash flow; and
3) A long-term focus: we manage
and make decisions for the long
term as if Kirby will be here
forever.

Next, we’d like to give you an update
by taking the pulse of Kirby’s current
businesses. As you will see from reading Bill Ivey’s letter, it is a very exciting time in our marine transportation
business, as we are investing hundreds
of millions of dollars in new inland
and offshore equipment. This investment is driven by increasing demand
across our inland and offshore fleets.
Volumes in the form of crude oil and
condensate from shale formations and
in output from our petrochemical
and refining customers continue to
grow. Because of the low-cost energy
and feedstock situation due to the
shale plays, the U.S. is now globally
We credit Kirby’s success to our
culture of discipline and our
outstanding team of employees.

economic environment,

our businesses is critical.
competitive. In fact, our customers
have announced an estimated $150
billion in investments for expansions
and new facilities here in the U.S. This
is a great thing for the country and for
our business.
Further, both United Holdings,
our land-based diesel engine business, and Kirby Engine Systems, our
marine-based diesel engine business,
are seeing increased demand for their
services and products. As noted above,
the pressure pumping business, which
is the key to extracting crude oil,
condensate and natural gas from U.S.
shale formations, is seeing ever increasing demands for the equipment we
supply and service. Likewise, at Kirby
Engine Systems, business continues
to improve as more vessels are added
to the global fleet and as nuclear and
other critical diesel backup power
needs intensify.
It is a truly exciting time for Kirby.
With this very positive economic environment, the continued safe and costeffective operation of our businesses is
critical. As you go from task to task,
watch to watch, day to day, please
keep this foremost in your mind. At
Kirby, nothing is so important that we
cannot take the time to do it safely. ■

OF KIRBY INLAND MARINE
From the President
I
n 2014, Kirby will build 66 inland
tank barges and one 1800 HP
inland towboat. Additionally, on May
1, 2014, Kirby’s Board of Directors
approved the construction of three
new coastal articulated tank barge and
tug units—two 155,000 barrel units
and one 185,000 barrel unit. These
are exciting times to work in the Kirby
Marine Transportation Group. The
additional volume requirements from
our customers that are supporting this
new construction are driven by strong
and expanding movements of crude oil
and natural gas condensate, as well as
new demand from expansions in the
petrochemical and refining industries.
New equipment is indeed attractive to our customers, but without
Kirby’s people who are dedicated to
safety, customer service and “doing the
right thing,” they are just vessels. Every
day that you and your co-workers
remain focused on the elements of our
culture as outlined in the previous editions of The Carriers is what creates
opportunities for growth. Safety is at
the forefront.
The Carriers presents an opportunity to remind ourselves of the
importance of safety at Kirby. In this
issue we want to examine two safety
processes integral to the Kirby culture.
The first of these is what might be
called the “circle of safety,” and the
second is the “chain of safety.”
I. The circle of safety begins with
prevention. The great majority of
Kirby’s safety focus (over 90%) is
on prevention. Prevention includes
everything from reading our safety
brochures to participation in safety
meetings to following procedures. It is
the underpinning of the safety process
at Kirby. Dave Riches’ weekly safety
blogs, which are widely read by Kirby
employees both at work
and at home, primarily
focuses on prevention. Our
workplace safety observations, confined space entry
process and near-miss
programs are other prevention-oriented systems.
The second phase
in our circle of safety is
response. Kirby spends
considerable time predetermining, planning, practicing and implementing the appropriate
response should an incident occur.
Because we plan and practice—for
example, by holding safety drills—
Kirby employees know what they will
do if a tankerman is injured or if there
is smoke in the engine room of a vessel. We know what to do because we
have thought about it, practiced our
response and developed procedures for
the response. If there is an incident at
Kirby, you don’t have to ask, “What
should I do?” That’s because the
practice, preparation and drills have
equipped you to professionally respond
to the unexpected.
The third phase of the circle of
safety involves analysis and correction.
This includes risk assessment, workplace safety observation and intervention, near-miss reporting and job safety
analysis, to mention a few. Kirby has
a robust process in place to investigate
the root causes of any incident and
then to analyze those causes for correction. When an incident does occur, we
don’t look for symptoms so we can put
a Band-aid over the problem. We look
for the root causes and the systemic
issues that allow them to happen.
The final step is closing the loop,
which happens when the corrective
action becomes part of our prevention
system as procedures and processes are
formally changed, equipment is updated, and the
lessons learned and new
information are circulated
to everyone who might
be impacted. Everyone
following our processes,
systems and procedures
creates the circle of safety
at Kirby.
II. The second safety
belief we want to examine
in this issue is the concept of the Kirby
chain of safety. What is the chain of
safety? It is the series of links from
order to delivery that ensures our crews
are safe and our product is flawlessly
delivered. We all know that vessel
crews are the ultimate point of service.
Yet, the chain of safety says that those
who work with the crews to ensure safe
and flawless service also have responsibilities for safety beyond simply preventing accidents in their areas.
For example, how orders are sent
and how follow-up calls are made, how
vessels are scheduled, how we choose
the words we use in communicating
safety, how departments are managed, how software is written, how
training is provided, how vendors are
approved, how audits are carried out,
how risks are managed, and even how
supplies are ordered and bills are paid
all impact, directly or indirectly, safety
at Kirby.
So, when you think of safety at Kirby,
remember that you are part of that
chain, no matter what your role is.
And remember that our safety process
is part of a circle of improvement,
where our commitment is to prevent,
respond to and correct the safety issue,
and then implement even stronger preventive measures. A circle and a chain:
we are part of both. ■

By LYNN STRAHAN, PRESIDENT
OF KIRBY ENGINE SYSTEMS
From the President
The ability to effectively
perform risk assessment
is paramount to creating
a safe work environment.
K
irby Engine Systems, Inc. (KES)
achieved a 20% reduction in its
total recordable injury rate in 2013
when compared to 2012, and finished
the year below its injury reduction
goal. We are pleased to report that
KES started 2014 with zero recordable
injuries in the first quarter. Thanks
go to all employees for demonstrating their commitment to safety and
successfully working toward a safety
culture of zero.
“Own Your Safety” is KES’ 2014
safety theme. Owning your safety
means making your commitment to
safety personal and demonstrating this
through your actions as a leader in
safety. In keeping with this theme, KES
is providing employees with a better
understanding and appreciation of risk
assessment. The ability to effectively
perform risk assessment is paramount
to creating a safe work environment.
Multiple safety meetings and quarterly
discussions are being conducted at
all facilities to train employees in the
steps involved in risk assessment and to
emphasize the importance of utilizing
this practice throughout each work day.
Engine Systems, Inc. (ESI) has been
working on a project for Duke Progress
Energy since September 2011. The
project calls for the supply of a 3900
kW diesel generator unit to be housed
in an outdoor weatherproof enclosure at
the Brunswick Nuclear Power Plant in
Southport, North Carolina.
The unit was designed, assembled
and factory tested at ESI’s facility in
Rocky Mount, North Carolina. The
prime mover for the generator is an
Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) Model
20-710G4C-T3 diesel engine rated
5400 BHP at 900 RPM. In October
2013, ESI delivered the new unit to the
site for installation and commissioning
by the customer’s general contractor
(Kiewit Corp). The unit is scheduled to
be placed into service upon conclusion
of the site acceptance testing in May
2014. The photo above shows the new
diesel generator unit during installation
and site acceptance testing.
In April 2014, the ISO quality
systems of MSI-Gulf Coast, MSI-New
Iberia, MSI-Belle Chasse and MSIMobile completed renewal audits by the
American Bureau of Shipping (ABS),
our systems’ registrar. We are proud
to report that there were no major
noncompliance findings at these locations and that the Marine Systems, Inc.
(MSI) registration has been renewed
for three years. MSI initiated an ISO
quality compliant system in 2005 at
the MSI-Houma, MSI-Chesapeake,
MSI-Paducah and MSI-Seattle facilities. Thereafter, the quality system was
expanded to include all the MSI facilities nationwide with the exception of
the recently acquired MSI-Thorofare
location. MSI-Thorofare is scheduled
for an internal ISO survey during the
third quarter of 2014 to initiate the
ISO certification process.
The MSI ISO quality system has
benefited KES in many ways. Customer
satisfaction is a key goal at KES, and
the quality management system has significantly contributed to accomplishing
that goal. Specifically, it has improved
communication throughout the
workforce, streamlined our processes,
reduced costs and increased production
efficiency. The ISO quality system is
a work in process and, as it matures,
continuous improvements will be realized. This process depends on everyone
at MSI: ISO provides the guidelines for
improvement, but the true agents of
advancement are our employees. ■

KIRBY OFFSHORE MARINE
From the President
B
y the time you receive this edition of The Carriers, Kirby Offshore Marine
(KOM) will have been in existence for three years. The company, a combination of K-Sea Marine, Sea Boats, Allied Transportation and Penn Maritime,
is now a proud part of the Kirby Marine group. From the Bay of Fundy to the
Chukchi Sea, from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of Alaska, from Maine to
Hawaii, and from Florida to Washington, the Kirby Offshore fleet works every
day to deliver our customers’ cargoes of refined products, black oil, chemicals,
sugar and crude. I thought I would use this opportunity to give a snapshot of the
company and a status report on our progress.
Three years into our history, KOM continues to work hard on a number
of critical challenges. The first is the company’s ongoing integration into Kirby
Marine. All KOM groups—Vessel Operations, Maintenance and Repair, Traffic
and Sales—are headquartered in Houston. We are aligning our procedures and
policies with those of all other Kirby Marine companies in an effort to ensure that
we approach our jobs, and the services we provide our customers, in a manner
consistent with the Kirby way of doing business.

Safety
We are not born with common sense, we
acquire as we live life. In fact, common
sense comes from all the experiences we
learn from just living life. This includes
experiences of others as well as our own.
Awareness of our environment, selfpreservation, and concern for self and
others are all factors in development of
common sense.
Relying on common sense will not keep
you safe. You are the key component in
preventing accidents by what you do.
It is your participation in keeping the
workplace safe that pays off in results.
The easiest ways to do that is to be
an observer, see and manage risks,
intervene, and learn. Remember, just
because someone can do a job quickly or
talk a good game does not necessarily
mean they do it safely. Knowledge, risk
identification and risk management are
the keys here as you apply what you learn
over time.
Experts would tell you that most
accidents are caused by unsafe behaviors
and risk taking. Being in a hurry, taking
undue risk, being preoccupied, and not
following established practices are just
some of the factors that influence safe
work. Kirby’s safety policy says, “It is the
responsibility of the employee to think,
to use common sense, and to work safely.”
Common sense and safe work are not
always partners. I guess thinking and
working safe are harder to do than it
sounds.
Remember to stay alert for hazards,
see the risks in front of you, learn how to
manage the risks so they do not produce
an event, keep you mind on the task at
hand and become proactive about your
safety and the safety of others. That
is just the common sense approach to
working event free. Remember, no one
can keep you safe better than you can. ■
i wa n t you to th i nk about people you talk to or work with that say they
are committed to safety but their actions reveal otherwise. Where’s the real
proof of their commitment to safety? Is their safety commitment only captured
verbally in meetings, on signs posted or what they say to the boss? What those
people do not realize is that for others to follow, before others can become a
believer in what they say, others want to see that commitment in action!
It is not always easy to control every aspect of life. One thing you can surely
control is what you do, how you do it and why you do it. This thought and action
process ties directly to your safety and the safety of those around you.
Ask yourself the simple question, why is safety important to me? I am not
talking about the company answer of why it is important. I am talking about
your answer. It is your answer, not what someone else thinks, that gives meaning to the simple process of being safe just for you, knowing that you can’t be
safe unless you make others around you safe. That is part of leading in knowing

Olen Murphy Retires
After 32 years of service with Kirby, Olen Murphy has retired.
He started his career in the Navy, serving our country proudly,
then began his maritime career as a deckhand for Helena Marine
in 1971. After serving as Mate Steersman for TL Herbert and
Barton Marine, Olen continued his career with the National River
Academy as an instructor. He then returned to Helena Marine,
serving as a Pilot, Relief Captain, Port Captain, Personnel Manager
and Operations Manager. He joined Kirby (Dixie Carriers) as
Personnel Manager. During a downturn in the economy, he
worked on the Kirby offshore vessels for three trips, returning to
a position as Port Captain for Kirby Offshore before he was promoted to Operations Manager over Canal Vessels. Olen transferred
to Texas to oversee the building and operations of the Odfjell
stainless barges, working as Sales / Operations Manager for the
Odfjell contract and ship lightering operations. He later became
the Barge Operations Manager with responsibility for barge cleaning (conventional barges), barge degassing (pressure barges), boat
fuel and lube operations and specialty barge operations, along with
many other areas of Kirby’s operations. Olen built the barge degassing operations in Corpus and Houston, the barge washing facility
in Houston and the boat fueling operations in Houston, to name
just a few of his projects. He also helped Kirby develop specialty
barge operations like the Dow PMDI barge. Over his career, Olen’s
commitment to Kirby and his knowledge of our operations helped
ensure Kirby’s continued success.
Congratulations
Condolences

We are very

on the news
that Captain
Joe Lochirco
passed away.
We send
our sincere
condolences to his family and
friends. He is survived by his
wife of 49 years, Melba, their
children, David Lochirco,
Darlene Lochirco, Joey
Lochirco, Tonya Lochirco,
all of Daphne, AL, Tammy
(Robbie) Comalander, of
Fairhope, twelve grandchildren,
and two great grandchildren.
Please keep them in your
thoughts and prayers during
this time.
Captain Lochirco began his
career with Hollywood Marine/
Kirby Inland Marine in July of
1989, and retired after 19 years
with the company due to medical issues in 2008. His maritime
career also included time with
Coastal Towing Company,
Taylor Towing, National
Marine, and Radcliff. Capt.
Lochirco served as Rel Captain
On the M/V Voyager, M/V Lana
Louise, M/V Enterprise, M/V
Sara Malloy, and Captain on
the M/V Shorty C., as well as
trips on numerous other vessels.
He enjoyed visiting his friends
at Kirby after his retirement at
the outreaches. When we saw
Joe last summer, he was still
enjoying riding his motorcycle
and making future plans to
come back to trip, unfortunately his health took a turn for
the worse. We will really miss
you Joe, you will always be in
our memories.
