Church services call for modest, respectful dressing. Currency The currency used in the Cook Islands, is the New Zealand Dollar (NZD). The Westpac and ANZ Banks in Avarua are open Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 3.00pm. In addition visitors can exchange travellers’ cheques and principal currencies at larger stores, hotels and the airport. Eftpos is becoming widely accepted and all major credits are accepted. Departure Tax No departure tax is payable at Rarotonga Airport as this is included in your international tickets. Driving To drive in the Cook Islands a current overseas license is necessary. Keep left and obey the speed limits of 40km/h in town and with 50km/h in the less populated areas. If you’re not licensed for a scooter a practical test at the Police Headquarters in Avarua and payment of NZ$25 will see you on the road. Duty Free The following personal allowance applies to all persons 18 years and over: • 2 litres of spirits and wine, or 4.5 litres of beer • 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco • Other goods not for resale up to NZ$750 in value Entry Requirements When you come to the Cook Islands, a valid passport and a return ticket will allow you a stay of up to 31 days. New Zealand citizens automatically qualify for a 90 day stay. Geography The Cook Islands comprise 15 islands scattered over almost 2 million square kilometres of the Pacific Ocean. The main island of Rarotonga is home to almost 10,000 inhabitants and is 32 km (20 miles) in circumference. Rarotonga is surrounded by a lagoon, which extends to a surrounding reef, then slopes off steeply to deep water. Rarotonga is encircled by a main ring road that traces the coast. Due to the mountainous interior, there is no road crossing through the centre of the island. The highest peak stands at 2,140 ft (658 m) above sea level. Internet Internet services (including Broadband) are available through Telecom Cook Islands. Several internet cafes are located on Rarotonga and Aitutaki . Paid wifi is available at key locations including Edgewater Resort. Medical Services Medical and dental services are available and there is a well-equipped hospital with New Zealand trained staff situated in Rarotonga, with a smaller hospital in Aitutaki. Post Office The post office is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm. Telepost, a Telecom outlet located at the CITC Shopping Complex, is open every Saturday 8am – 12 noon. Tips Tips are not customary or expected but feel free to reward good service. Weather & Climate The Cook Islands enjoy a pleasantly warm and sunny climate all year round and there is no best time to visit. June to August are the cooler months, whilst November to March marks the warmer season, with occasional tropical showers expected. It is also known as cyclone season – something to be aware of although they are not a regular occurrence. The drier months, from April to November, have an average temperature of about 26°C, whilst the warmer, more humid and damp season runs from December to March. During this season the temperature ranges between 22°C (min) and 30°C (max). Wildlife There are no poisonous or seriously harmful animals or insects in the Cook Islands but do look out for centipedes which do bite and the coral reefs should be treated with caution and shoes worn due to spiked stonefish.
