The Electric Quilt Company Quilting Arts – Series 100 – Episode 103-3 – Embellishments & Encrustations Andrea Bishop – Webmaster & Software Educator Embellishments and Encrustations In EQ6, it is possible to set GIFs and PNGs on a quilt. GIFs and PNGs are different from other image formats because they can have an invisible background. This makes it possible to set pictures of real buttons, real rick-rack, real yarn, real beads, etc. on the quilt. Here’s how to import a picture and set it on a quilt: Making the GIF or PNG Image For this step you will need to have an image manipulation software that is capable of deleting backgrounds. 1 Scan or take a picture of the embellishment you are thinking of using. 2 Open the picture up in your image software. Make sure your image is on one layer and the white background is on the bottom/background layer. 3 Delete the background around your embellishment. Don’t forget to delete the holes of your buttons or any other see-through places of your embellishment if you want to see your quilting fabric behind it. 4 Delete the Background Layer. (In Photoshop, for example, you select the Background layer and click the Trash Can button.) Some image software will show a grid pattern in the background to indicate the background is missing. 5 The image does not need to be a high resolution or a gigantic image size. Change the Image Size to be something around 200 pixels. (It does not need to be square.) 6 Choose FILE > Save As and save the image as a GIF or PNG in a location you will be able to find it again. (Suggestion: Save the file in your My Pictures folder.) 7 Repeat these steps for all the images you are thinking of using. Then, close your image software and open EQ6. Importing Image Files through the Photo Library 1 Click LIBRARIES > Photo Library. 2 Click Import > From Image Files. The Import box will appear. 3 At the top of the box, click the down arrow beside the Look in: box. Choose the correct drive and double-click through the folders until you see your image. Setting Photos in a Quilt For this technique we recommend setting your blocks on Layer 1 and your photos on Layer 2 or 3. Setting Photos on Layers 2 or 3 1 Start on the Quilt worktable with your quilt in front of you. 2 tool is on your toolbar. (If it is not, right-click over the Quilting tools, Make sure the Set Photo left-click Add/Remove Buttons, and put a check next to Set Photo.) 3 Click the layer tab on which you want to set a photo.
